- CBS News correspondent Nikki Battiste joined CBSN to discuss new sexual abuse allegations in the Catholic Church. At least 18 people have come forward to say they were sexually abused by nuns. The alleged victims said they felt compelled to talk after a Pennsylvania grand jury identified hundreds of "pedophile priests."
She went to a nun because her uncle, a priest was abusing her. Then the nun groomed her for abuse too, why has this outrage faded from the news.
People just don't care anymore. It's sad. It ruins the name of the church.
This is a cult by the elites.

I spend a lot of time online and I see absolutely nothing from the catholic church attempting to brainwash me, nor do I see it on TV. No ads for the bible, no ads for churches, nothing of the sort. I do however see tons of information that encourages me to love money and buy all the newest gadgets and devices, and who to vote for, etc.. I don't know who is brainwashing who but it's a miracle anyone is Christian nowadays in a completely unchristian society.

Predators come in all genders, shapes and sizes. As a victim of sexual assault myself it breaks my heart that anyone else in the world had to experience that suffering. I pray that the victims get the justice and support they deserve.
Yes there is. It happened to me in the 70's up until 1982. And there was no one no one that helped me, because I spoke out I was punished severely, humiliated, labeled a liar, theif and made silent. My entire life has suffered to this day. And I have reached out for help and I am feeling victimized again. It was a different world back then.
And all they want is for it just to go away. Life isn't fair. That's it.
I told a social worker what a nun did to me and she even asked another social worker if that was a crime because it was not spoken about and still isn't.
I went to Catholic school as child I was terrified of the nuns .they were so mean and physically abusive .they even burned our hands if we didn't get 100 on our test .they hit with wooden clappers across the head .shoved the desk hitting us in the stomach .Hit with rulers .it caused me to suffer from panic attacks ,and school.phobia later developed agoraphobia which i still suffer from

The Orthodox Church is the real One, True, Holy and Apostolic Church of Christ. The Catholic church of Rome is just an organization removed from the original Church because of the heresy called Papism. If anybody wishes to be saved it is only through Christ's Church and that is the Eastern Orthofox Church. May God enlighten us all toward the path of salvation. 🙏☦️

As someone who had a relationship with a 26 year old when i was 17, grooming is something that young girls and boys wont understand at that age. What makes it worse is how these pedophiles make it seem normal and they treat you like you are special because they chose you out of everyone. Once they get older and once they understand that what happened to them was abuse and that they were taken advantaged of, it will be so heartbreaking for them.

I've been waiting for this to happen. I went to a Catholic boarding school and was aware that one nun in particular was having an inappropriate relationship with a young girl.
Some years ago, it was with great pleasure a judge threw a violent nun who'd beaten a young female student to a few years in prison. Justice served.

Would love to know too. I know in Africa the priests have families but it is not talked about and they have regular sexual relationships with nuns. They were rumours of priests fathering children and we think it was true as they took keen interests in certain children. Acting as father figures
I worked for Monsignor Mike Higgins, Catholic Priest from San Diego Dioces. He was a Canon Lawyer (Law of the Catholic Church). He represented the priests with the sexual harassment cases. He asked me if I thought priests should be married, I said definately yes. He would ask me about sexual things at times, if I heard my son and his girlfriend having, things like that. I told him if he ever talked to me, or asked me questions of that nature again, I would leave that moment and he'd never see me again.

I believe it as I grew up Catholic. I've heard stories as well. I would always be careful not to be alone in a room with a priest or a nun. It's just disturbingly scary.

Some in the comments here have suggested that allowing priests and nuns to become married would solve this problem.
I have read this many times, but it ignores the real reason these particular people become priests and nuns.
If they want to have power over young people, then being married would not help.

You make a great point there. As a parent, it baffles me how some parents have that blind trust in clergy to just leave their kids unsupervised with those people. I do understand that they usually prey on vulnerable/neglected kids but lots of cases have been from altar kids that have a stable very religious family.

@ Old people should rather do that, and people younger than 30 should be heavily discouraged from the monastic vow.
In Orthodox Christianity, you can't become a monk if you're younger than 21, and even people older than 21 are kept for many years ( sometimes 10 or 15 years ) under a trial period before making the monastic vow, and if they are not fit, they are not accepted.
Same thing should be done for celibate priests.

In 1960, when I was 3, my mom was hospitalized for 1 yr with tuberculosis, & almost another yr recovering. While mom was away & dad was working daily, I believe my 16 yr. old sister began skipping school. She ended up being placed at a residential facility run by nuns in Adrian, MI. CPS wouldn’t allow my sister to remain with me, my dad, aunt & grandmother because her dad was deceased & these weren’t her biological relatives. The nuns must have had her for about 2 years. Afterwards, the family acted like it never happened. This is all just coming back to me now at age 62. I had almost no memory of it.
Now, I’m able to connect the dots. Until all the recent revelations, our family had no idea why my sister became a lesbian & a heroin addict. As a devout, thoroughly naive Black Catholic, my mother completely trusted those nuns. There is no way of knowing the horrors or the abuse inflicted upon my sister that so radically changed her life. My sister took that with her to her grave in 1970 at age 26.
I see now, how terribly wrong the family was for blaming my sister for “choosing” to be that way. As a child/teen in foster care, she had no choice & no voice. Sadly, this is a worldwide epidemic with the Catholic Church. It should be clear with all the decades of payouts & tens of thousands of cover-ups, that the Vatican has no real intention of cracking down on this behavior. They are just as guilty of the same, if not worse. Pope Francis refused to speak on it when pressed back in Feb. 2019. They were busy covering up their own recent scandals with high ranking cardinals.
Families need to stop blindly entrusting their children to anyone. Stop expecting these predators to self-police. If these institutions will not voluntarily clean up their act (& they won’t); they need to be de-funded & dismantled by the people. How many more lives have to be destroyed?

If regular degular people doing this type of sick pedophiliac behavior can be sent away, regardless of your standing socially or economically YOU SHOULD TOO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE. I'm glad that I abandoned Catholicism even before the sex abuse revelation of 2002. As a history major I am no longer shocked by this anymore. Anybody who reads the long history of the Catholic Church will see a pattern of decadence, greed, and perversity which spans over a thousand years.

This is not new, even though they're trying to make it seem like shocking brand news. Regardless, I'm not Catholic but remember, just because people use a good thing for evil, it doesn't mean the thing is evil. There's evil in everything good. Humanity needs help everywhere, being religious or not.
Thats not a true statement, there is no evil in God, the bible Says that Jesus was the Only person who did not sin. I don't doubt this woman's story at all. But I do want to say, I was practically raised by nuns. They were all very kind to me and always conducted themselves with dignity and virtue.
Then you had a good parish and group of nuns. This isn't so in other places. Just know that.
I always tell people with good families to be grateful. You had a good church family, reason for gratitude. May you always be so lucky.

I had a similar experience. The nuns who taught at our elementary and high school provided a good education, behaved with honor and helped me to deal responsibly with a difficult home situation. Which is not to diminish what this woman and others experienced.

These nuns who have / are carrying out such acts are deplorable. God will sift them out like wheat from the chaff. While we pray for those who have been sexually abused by clergy and nuns, may we also pray for those who have been physically abused by priests and nuns, priests who yell and slap altar boys for innocent mistakes, nuns who beat with rulers and canes those who misbehaved. There's enough problems in the Catholic Church to go around for everybody. It's time it was all brought to light, sifted through, cleaned up, and made into the Church that Christ desires!

When I was in the fourth grade I pleaded with the nun teaching the class to let me go to the bathroom , she refused to let me go. I finally defecated in my pants , had to sit through the rest of the class, about an hour or longer and then walk home ,a good distance. It was one of the most excruchiating and painful thing that I ever experienced. To this day, and I am 80 years old I will never forget that and what it felt like to sit there in my feces praying that I could crawl out of the class as the other kids around me said what is that smell ???? It was horrible

KMF many these cases are of same-sex abuse because the Catholic Church is built on segregation by gender. It’s how the Church traditionally functions. The sexuality of these priest/nuns isn’t an excuse for their abuse, just background on why many cases are same-sex.

With all the historical repression of homosexuality it makes perfect sense that there would be a much higher percentage of homosexuals than heterosexuals choosing to attempt the celibate lifestyle required to be a priest or nun. Add to that the fact the Catholics think homosexuality can be, and needs to be, "fixed", and you end up with more homosexual than heterosexual child abuse in the church.

As a high school freshmen I was on vacation with my grandparents in Germany. At a small Catholic Church with a beautiful alter, made by a monk who was later blinded so he wouldn't make a beautiful alter for other towns. I think the blinding was done by the mayor of the town.
