- ESTEVAN ORIOL is a Los Angeles native. The deep roots he’s laid has given him a unique ability to be part of many different communities which his photography reflects. His super power is his open-mindedness which is felt when looking at his work on gangs, drugs, celebs, musicians, and the city itself. He’s published three books with the back catalog for many more. We see him, in this episode of Wrong Side Of The Lens, in his backyard recollecting his atypical path to become the artist he currently is.
We take a ride in his vintage hot rod which he only allows old RnB to be played in. We see Estevan at a respected LA gallery showing his iconic work. He’s someone who doesn't shy away from hard work and his archive reflects that. These images are both inspiring and a useful document of a time and place which will be appreciated for years to come.

WRONG SIDE OF THE LENS is a documentary series exploring the lives of street photographers. Here, we get a rare chance to turn the camera on those not used to on that side of the lens. We begin to answer the question of why they are so obsession with taking images of complete strangers. They come from a variety of backgrounds yet are drawn to this same calling; street photo. This is a relatively new and, often misunderstood art form, which leaves ample room for these hard working artists to push boundaries. This series captures many of these moments.
Thx for the kind words everyone! Don't miss all 19 episodes (so far) on www.wrongsideofthelens.com
Great video hey I got a question. Where can we get your books from? Please let me know if you have a PayPal and would you deliver them through the mail. Thanks, please let me know
Hey bud you should try to get your art on display in the Cheech in Riverside. Great eye you have

One of my favorite photographers of all time. Someone who’s always stayed true to the love of his craft. Great episode
I did not plan on watching this whole video, but it's incredibly well done and Estevan's story is compelling. I couldn't turn it off. Props to everyone involved.
Great to hear!
One of the most respected Eses in Los Angeles! Salute Homie! Estevan Oriol 🇲🇽
Big homie captured every angle of Los Angeles culture, at a pivotal time, good and bad times. Glad he's getting his flowers.
The work him and Cartoon did to popularize the East LA/Chicano culture is unprecedented.
Lmao as if they were the pioneers 😂
I believe Cartoon was Flame DEF in the mid 80s
Joker Brand is still my favorite brand... Those two guys are absolute legends!
This 17-minute video turned into an hour. Every single picture captures a story, and that's a gift not just anybody has. I hope he continues his craft and keeps recording the LA history through an eye of a true LA resident
I just stumbled across this on RUclips… I’m a black man and I was born in East LA, Aliso Village. I have never ever forgotten my roots there… although we moved when I was 4 my heart will always belong to East LA. It’s a special place. Music and art is how we tell our stories. Thank you for this
Black and Brown love my brotha!
happy you're feeling it.
Although it’s practically the same shit to me , Aliso Village was in Boyle Heights
always welcome back to the carne asada homie, peace
He showed us LA through his lens. Remarkable and outstanding work Estevan. His work should be on display at the Getty. 💯
For real.. get that man the solo show of his life!
Agreed!
Love that his father saw and encouraged Estevan to take pictures. It's important to help our children discover their gifts so that they can develop them and gift them back to the world. Thanks for sharing
Those pictures will be forever. Awesome stuff
Esteban. We lost sparks a few days ago. Thank you for doing his portrait. Rest in peace sparky Head Hunters 13
What happened. I use to know him back in H.S
As a true LA native, this the kind of stuff i can really appreciate and relate to. This was all normal to me growing up in south central. Glad to keep the history alive. We love our city
No one noticed how he cleaned and wiped down the table before setting down his books , a show of self respect and respect for others , respect for his artwork and his environment
And how he swept around his car before getting in.
he just cleaned his table, which I hope you do too...relax. There are children fighting for their life in Palestine.
You Americans always take your celeb worship to idol worship level. Relax..
At 2:52, Estevan says he should've shot more in the 90's... that truly was a special decade!
Much love from TeXas, salute!
Estevan's body of work is unparalleled and he deserves much more exposure. His portraits are so good and you can see the trust he gains from the people he photographs - so respected. 'You gotta get the work first, first you gotta be good enough to get the work, then you gotta do the work, then you gotta hope paid you get paid for it" - been there and know exactly what he means.
If your photos aren’t good enough, then you’re not close enough. Estevan gets so close and that's why he is so good.
Thank you for this revealing video, Estevan is a huge inspiration for me.
THE BEST TO EVER DO IT 🐐
❤ it raised here in Los Angeles myself for the last 50 years good work on capturing the city and great photography Sir.
I grew up obsessed wit LIFESTYLE C.C. and was later blessed to have been an employee at GreyOne & SA Studios in Pasadena in 2007. Spent the next 10 years following this man around from the SA studios near the 4the Ave bridge to the tattoo shop off Skid Row. Although I'm an insignificant speck on his timeline, Estevan changed my life. R.I.P. Big Trigz.
A remarkable photographic document of a world few have the courage to enter. Reminder for all photographers, that you should never stop documenting the life you see.
Damn seeing the few pictures of DP members bring back memories of growing up in Paramount aka Perromount good shit mad respect for your work capturing the L.A lifestyle
Great episode. One of the most inspiring photographers for me, especially growing up in Socal. They way Estevan is able to tell the story of LA in his photographs is incredible, truly one of a kind.

That oldie song…..took me 1 second to fall in love with it. Love that 90’s era, some amazing work right here.
Beautiful work. This was an awesome episode. I was a teenager late 80s and 90s here in Southern California. Estevans work and photography resonates with me so much. The memories that he captured on film are incredible. This man is a living legend.
Estevan is the truth. Much love to home and what he has done.
I'm not from LA, but the life is the life, and homey documents it so well.
Love this! I wish his books were more readily available. They seem to be out of print/sold out for the last few years. I don't understand how that is possible in today's age....
I was gonna say
Incredible craft I love black and white it captures so much more
love this episode because most people make these generalizations about people like this man. but he is kind and as gentle as the rest of them. a true artist, just doing the work

This is the video that turned me on to who this individual actually is. I've been seeing and enjoying his photography for years and years, especially now that I live and photograph in LA myself. Thank you very much for this video. I'm also a chicano who works in and photographs the entertainment industry, so I feel a unique connection with this man. Thanks again.

Damn, thanks for doing this. So well done and got a great glimpse into his past here. Estevan is a legend, much respect to him.
Hey! Thx!
Fantastic. The photos are priceless and tell so many stories. So much talent.❤❤❤
So great. Estevan is a true artist. This is a great series.
Estevan embodies the creative spirit of the reason why I do what I do. Now I need some of his prints to go in my studio.
Estevan, you are the Ansel Adams of E LA Street photography. Outstanding, museum quality work. I don't know if you have a chance to check out the Hip Hop exhibit at the Annenberg Photo Space Museum in Century City. You're work would have fit right in. Unfortunately, they closed during the Pandemic shutdown. You work could definitely could work at the Getty in W LA. They have all types of exhibits from the beginning of photography is contemporary LA artists. You work reminds me of the work of WEEGEE, a 40's NY street/crime photographer and also Diane Arbus. The LA County Art Museum had a full exhibit of Diane Arbus. See about a showing at the Museum of Modern Art, DTLA. Also, as an art collective, the Brewery Art Colony. You've done the hard work, time to cash in.
That's dope how down to earth Estevan is 💯
So this is the power of supportive parents.
True legend, respect Estevan
Absolute legend!
Second comment here… I’ve never heard of Estevan, but my god, this guy is a national treasure. Keep up the work my man, we see you!

This one hit home. Estevan shot some of my older homies from El Sereno multiple times throughout the years. Funny story, B-Real also has a lot of cousins from Sereno Locke St. I grew up right around the corner from his grandmas house.
He's one of the best photographers/storyteller out there.
