May be a dumb question, but lets say I do this job myself in my garage. How do I go about tuning it? Is that also something I can do myself or does it have to go to the dealer? I’ve watched a ton of these install videos but no one walks through the tune to finish the job.
I refer all of my clients to a Dyno Tuner. For an extra fee I’ll even take it to then myself for the customer. All of the “diy” tuners are garbage lol. But if you can’t make it to a dyno tuner immediately, you can purchase a power commander or power vision, and Fuel Moto can make a base line map for you to get by for a bit
you might do it yourself if you use a tuner with wide band O2 sensors, but..... ... you really have to know something about tuning, it is not as random as stage one setup, you really have to know how tables are working and what are you aiming for what ratio at what RPM and TP, also you have to have knowledge about the spark advance. That is the first thing, second thing is to tune the bike on street can be dangerous, since you have to do those multiple runs even with wide open throttle, do you have balls for that? In reality better search for reputable tuner in your area (even some tuning shops dont know what they do), and let the bike tune in controlled and safe environment of tuning center. It often is not more expensive to getting a tuner with wide band O2 sensors, since the shop usually has own stationary sensor unit and they often have discounts for "control boxes" so at the end of the day the price you pay is not much higher then if you DIY.
Did you reuse the o-ring from the stock pump for the pump/case mating surface? Does the tool you have in the video have a stopper in it so you don’t push the cam bearing in too far. This is the scariest part for me cause I’m sure you feel resistance the entire time while pushing it in
Yes this one has a lil to stop you when you’re set in all the way. This is a Jim’s tool. Pricey, but worth it. Especially for how many of these cams I have done.
We don’t have any temp monitoring on this bike, but we were having some problems with the twin cooled system, and when I ran a few tests the heads were in the 250-275 range before the fans would come on and stabilize the temp
my advice would be to take it to a respected dyno tuner that is capable of tuning to your preferred tuning system (power vision, power commander, etc. and if you have a Fuel pack, throw it in the trash lol) The dyno tuner has the ability to adjust your timing and help you with the correct air:fuel your bike needs. The base maps sent by places like FM are a great starting point, but definitely not for longevity
@@GilstrapGarage What's your opinion about autotune with powervision? I just got S&S cam chest kit installed on my 114 LRS, base tune for 475 and then refined it with autotune.
@@CN-ri9vf I always try to encourage people to get their bike dyno tuned by a reputable tuner that’s confident with the software you want to run, and then run the auto tune all you’d like. The auto tune feature is great for your air:fuel, but you don’t get to adjust anything like timing and the dozens of other things your tuner should look for
My biggest recommendation when choosing a cam is be very honest with yourself about your riding style. What RPM range you ride in, when you shift, and what gear you ride in on the freeway. Based on that, read what the manufacturer lists their torque values at and make your selection based on that
Another way to install the pushrod clip have everything installed as you do. Take the clip start in place top part in, take your screwdriver in between the clip and spring cover lift screwdriver up. Don' t uze the fins
Nope. I did spend the first 4 years of my career maintaining cat and komatsu equipment, and I’ve been to a handful of Caterpillar day classes, but I never really specialized in caterpillar equipment. I was a cat tech for 30 yrs, and worked at a Harley dealer that’s now closed in NW Indiana, than ran a Hyundai service department, than ran a car hauler shop for USAL. I noticed the hat and snap on tools , I had to ask. From one tech to another, great video.

Thank you! It’s not so bad after you do a couple of them lol
Great job, but only thing that bothers me is the shifting peg, why putting 475 if u shift up with heel
On all the bikes I’ve ever had/rode with the heel toe shifter, I’ve never used the heel shifter. I just shift like a normal bike
Thank you for your videos.
🙌🏻🙌🏻
do you have to adjust the oil pressure valve on the oil pump or is it pre adjusted from S&S?
The factory settings from S&S are going to be great for the day to day user. No need to adjust them. But the option is there for the people really going in on a high performance build
@@GilstrapGarage Thanks Bro
Does the tool you have in the video have a stopper in it so you don’t push the cam bearing in too far. This is the scariest part for me cause I’m sure you feel resistance the entire time while pushing it in
So how do you know when to stop. Where did you get that tool is it the best one ?
Yes this one has a lil to stop you when you’re set in all the way. This is a Jim’s tool. Pricey, but worth it. Especially for how many of these cams I have done.
How hot does your M8 get with the new cam install?
We don’t have any temp monitoring on this bike, but we were having some problems with the twin cooled system, and when I ran a few tests the heads were in the 250-275 range before the fans would come on and stabilize the temp
Awesome video
Thank you 🙌🏻
Bro I love that run out tool where did you get it..🤔
That one is from Milch Racing. It does evo, TC, and M8. I picked it up from eBay for like $80
Great footage
Thank you. It’s a struggle sometimes lol
Thanks for the video 👍
What is the orange item with the gauge??
it measures the pinion shaft runout
Great video
Thank you 🙌🏻
Nice video like always
Thank you!!
Any thoughts on the 485 cam ?
I haven’t installed one, man. I don’t have any experience with them
Is the cam bearing included in the kit ?
Typically they are not
@@GilstrapGarage Thanks for your reply.
Nice moves
How much is labor for a job like this?
About 8 hours

Great vid. Seems easy 😛 -joking- you must think of a ton of details… DIY is having no guarantee but some could take the risk.
It comes with a lot of practice!
Thank you for the vid
Thanks for watching!
Any idea why my Harley would be running hotter after the stage 2. I have my powervision with gauges and it's telling me my engine temp is 300 degrees
was the bike tuned on a Dyno after the upgrades?
@@GilstrapGarage just a map sent by fuel moto
my advice would be to take it to a respected dyno tuner that is capable of tuning to your preferred tuning system (power vision, power commander, etc. and if you have a Fuel pack, throw it in the trash lol) The dyno tuner has the ability to adjust your timing and help you with the correct air:fuel your bike needs.
The auto tune feature is great for your air:fuel, but you don’t get to adjust anything like timing and the dozens of other things your tuner should look for
If my run out is more than spec now what do I do? Return the kit?
You can spend the cash and have your crank trued and welded. It’s expensive, but a good investment for longevity
What do you charge to do mine?
Where are you out of?

Great video bro! I have a 2020 CVO Tri Glide and plan on doing a Cam, oil pump, and head pipe! Any suggestions would be very appreciated!
My biggest recommendation when choosing a cam is be very honest with yourself about your riding style. What RPM range you ride in, when you shift, and what gear you ride in on the freeway. Based on that, read what the manufacturer lists their torque values at and make your selection based on that
🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Another way to install the pushrod clip have everything installed as you do. Take the clip start in place top part in, take your screwdriver in between the clip and spring cover lift screwdriver up. Don' t
uze the fins
Been there done that with the 475. Too much bottom end loss constant shifting at lower rpm. Changed up.
Changed up to what Earl?
its kinda funny to see he owner them knowing full well im cutting the stock push rods but they still cringe lol
Missed opportunity for making cam gear drive and ditching the chain.
Nahh I wouldn’t install it unless the crank was welded and trued
Subbed
Awesome! Thank you 🙏🏻
@GilstrapGarage YOU SHOULD NOT be telling people to ditch the o ring on the back of pump!!!!!!
Are you a cat tech. ?
Nope. I did spend the first 4 years of my career maintaining cat and komatsu equipment, and I’ve been to a handful of Caterpillar day classes, but I never really specialized in caterpillar equipment. I believe at the time of this video, I was working for BNSF as a locomotive mechanic. I am a linkbelt crane technician now though.
I was a cat tech for 30 yrs, and worked at a Harley dealer that’s now closed in NW Indiana, than ran a Hyundai service department, than ran a car hauler shop for USAL. I noticed the hat and snap on tools , I had to ask. From one tech to another, great video.
Haha do mine too
Come on by! Let’s get it done. If you’re interested, I’ll have some questions for you on your riding style and expectations so we can pick the right cam, and I can give you an idea of the costs

Can't believe HD still uses inferior crap (bearings) in their motors. I'd never buy anything new from them.
