    Hi Kelli,every since I was little, I always bite my nails and never took care of them and now I know how to paint my nails like you and I am only 12! You have helped me so much over the 2 or 3 years I have subscribed to you and now I am so happy to know how paint my nails, everyone at school is like nice nails. But I told them I did them myself! Now I know how to do nail art and at least paint them from you. I know this message was long but thanks so much Kelli Marissa!

    I've been doing manicures (and a nail polish junkie) since I was around 13 and I'm 47 now. I have to say I much prefer doing my own than going to a salon. I find painting my nails so relaxing and it's a great stress reliever for me. That may sound weird, but it is really fun to me. I still occasionally go and get some dip powder nails or something but much prefer doing my own.
    These are great tips for beginners!

    It is totally ok and safe to use rubbing alcohol on your nails. Its actually used a lot, especially in gel application. You can also use acetone to dehydrate. It has to be pure acetone because regular acetone and non acetone removers have oils and conditioners in them. When I do a gel manicure, I use both alcohol and a dehydrator, I want to make sure I got everything. You explained it pretty much text book. I don't cap my ends and I have pretty long, for natural nails. I can get most manicures to last a week or 2.

      You want to use a formula that's at least 70% alcohol and preferably 90% though, otherwise the other ingredients can leave residue and prevent adhesion :)

    Kelli, this was INCREDIBLY helpful. My manicure is flawless right now! Step 4 was particularly helpful for me because I think I have just been using too much polish, and your demonstration of how you get a small amount onto the brush worked wonders.

    Lol, I'm one of those who use alcohol to dehydrate my nails before a mani. It works like a charm. I also use cuticle oil before I remove my nail polish - I feel like it helps keep my cuticles from drying out so bad since I use pure acetone. I'm a tip-wrapper too. Always do it. And last thing - I was watching a nail tech's video and she said that quick-dry topcoat is actually made to go on before your nails are dry. Something about the formulation and shrinkage if your nails are dry first. So idk. But yeah, tip-wrappers of the world, unite! 😂😂😂

    20 minutes?! I'm here at 2-3h because my polish never dries and doing a second coat over the first wet-ish coat just smudges everything and makes it uneven? Plus I think my "quick-drying" top coat is garbage since I don't think it dries all the coats... or maybe it's me?

    • @GypsyJRo
      @GypsyJRo 6 лет назад +14

      Maybe the layers are too thick?
      I find that my polish dries and lasts better when I use the thinnest layers of polish I can do and still get even coverage. If I use too much, it never really dries.

    • @hypermice
      @hypermice 6 лет назад +6

      I agree with Jeanne, try to make each coat as thin as you can and it will dry faster. The exact polish you are using along with temperature and humidity can drastically affect drying time too. Try a different quick dry top coat and see if that improves anything. =)

    • @CecileVeillard
      @CecileVeillard 6 лет назад +2

      Definitely try a better QDTC. I like the Essie gel couture one. $11 but WORTH IT - it's like I have glass on my nails & it dries so fast (5 mins).

    • @AlyenaMango
      @AlyenaMango 6 лет назад

      Yeah then your top coat is probably not "quick-dry", with a good qualtiy one it should dry much quicker.

    • @calichef1962
      @calichef1962 6 лет назад +6

      The above suggestions are all on point. Thinner coats of polish and definitely use quick dry topcoat! Sally Hanson's Gel Effect polishes dry a lot faster than most polishes, (don't bother with the Gel Effect top coat it takes FOREVER to dry! The Gel Effect polish dries super-fast with the best quick dry topcoat I have ever used -- Seche Vite, but it does tend to get thick about halfway through the bottle. (You can buy Seche thinner and big, refill bottles on Amazon.) You can buy it almost anywhere, even Walmart sells it, and it's awesome! If your color coats are thin and you put Seche Vite on top you can go to bed in an hour and NOT have "bed marks" in your nails when you wake up in the morning!

    Did you ever end up making a dedicated video on how to make your own decals? I think that would make a good 101 video. I know you can decal hand painted designs, but my favorite is colored in stamped designs. I did it once for my little sister with roses to match her dress, and it was awesome, but the decals that looked almost perfect on my nail mat ended up less than perfect on the nails. It still looked awesome, but I know I still have a lot to learn about getting the decal smoothly onto the nails.

    • @KelliMarissa
      @KelliMarissa  6 лет назад

      I haven't yet but I still plan to!

    • @ACWells13
      @ACWells13 6 лет назад

      I've seen some people pick up their decals using a clear sticky stamper, so they can pick them up and transfer them smoothly :D You probably have to gently work a cuticle pusher under it first so it doesn't stick to the mat though :D Waiting for them to dry properly is the key, if they're still even a little bit wet they will stretch when you pick them up!

    Lol. I agree with what you said about homemade manicures being fun. I follow all these steps religiously. Except the bit with the dehydrator. I just usually wash my hands with soap and water. Lol. I change my manicures very often as I use Elmer’s glue as a peel off base. By the next day or two....i get tired of the old mani and start all over again. I always do some form of nail art. There’s hardly ever just one color of polish on all my nails. Great informative video. Btw Your hair and eye makeup looks amazing!

      Are your layers possibly too thick? The thicker you paint, the more brittle it is, and as your nail flexes it's more likely to chip.

    Wrapping the tips is so important if you have long nails! It's crazy how much long my polish lasts since I've been doing it.
    What I have also noticed is that dehydrating isn't actually that important. What I always do is to put a lot of Jojoba oil on my nails and let it soak in for 15 minutes, then I wash my hands with soap and water to get rid of the oil on the surface of my nail. I then rub them dry with a towel and let them dry out in the air for around 5 minutes, then start painting. My manicures last up to two weeks like this 😊

But now I see those INLP colors and they have a great set of cheaper base and top coat, but I'm kind of hooked on the Hard Rock and my nails are just so much better as it helps them be strong and also slightly flexible, so my nails got so long within the first couple months I am afraid to try a different base.

    I watched this video last night and some things you said are different from what I do, but are things I used to do. Not everyone does things the same, so I didn't think anything of it. Then today I was rewatching some of your old nailpolish 101 videos because I have had some nail polish peeling off problems lately, and I found the one that told me to basically change the way I was doing nails to make them last longer, which I did. It was the first nailpolish 101 video, where you talked about how to avoid polish chipping. You said to never use oil or lotion before painting nails, and to always cap your tips, both of which you say the opposite in this video. I keep my nails shorter than yours, so capping is always huge pain since it requires me to paint my skin to get it on my nail tip and then do cleanup with acetone to get it back off of my skin. I only cap with top coat because it's a pain. Should I not bother capping them at all? I figured it was important to have top coat cover all the layers of polish exposed on my nail tip, particularly because I use my hands a lot and the super short nails means I use my nails a lot too.
    The nail peeling issue: I have learned not to flood my cuticles so I have a lot less problems with my polish trying to peel off from the cuticles, but lately I have noticed I never really get small chipping on my tips. When it tries to chip it instead pulls off a chunk of polish like a sheet. I think it might be in part to be using gel top coat, but the same issue happens to my 4yo daughter's nails and we never use gel. Her nails either look perfect or completely naked, it almost never chips partly off. I use acetone to dry out the nail plate, essie first base as base coat, and essie speed setter as top coat. The whole reason I realized this might be odd is I was testing out some new polishes a few weeks ago and put them on my left hand nails without any base or top. I intended to take it off not long after and actually paint my nails properly, but life took over and I ended up wearing them for 3 weeks. They have chipped, but only tiny amounts at a time and never huge chunks like I normally see, which makes me think I'm possiblity doing something wrong normally. I don't know if it's my base coat or top coat causing the issues, or if that is expected when you have so many layers of polish on?

    • @KelliMarissa
      @KelliMarissa  6 лет назад

      Hey, sorry for any confusion there - the video about peeling or chipping is advice for people who struggle with that issue specifically, so in those cases I wouldn't recommend moisturizing before and I would recommend capping the free edge. This is more of a general guideline for people who don't have especially oily nail plates! Hope that makes sense. It sounds like you might need a bonding base coat like Orly Bonder to keep your nail polish from peeling off in sheets.

    • @cinnamontea7671
      @cinnamontea7671 6 лет назад +1

      Do you shake your polishes before you use them? That can cause bubbles, so if you do, try rolling them between your hands instead. Also, polishes start to bubble when they're old or getting thicker, so you could try nail polish thinner (not polish remover) to thin them out. Hope that helps!

    Thanks for all your work. These videos are really helpful especially when you explain how the products work. I am more than surprised though at how fast you say you do everything. I can't do it because I will mess up the polish on the working (painting) hand. Also, I have to use a cuticle stick dipped in remover to clean up around the edges because the polish is too dry to get off with a brush or anything soft. So I'm a little confused on how to do all this with basically wet nails.

    • @KelliMarissa
      @KelliMarissa  5 лет назад +1

      I think it just takes time and practice - I've been painting my nails at least once a week for over six years now, so over time it's become a super quick process for me! As you go on, start slowly to work through every step, and eventually it'll be quicker!

  • @cretnotonic
    @cretnotonic 3 года назад

    I just started painting my nails but my nails sometimes look perfect and other time it looks like I put play doh on my nails. Meaning, the slightest friction (I was wiping my hands dry) and it pushed the colour around. Like it was moldable. Why? I wait a while before applying top coat. And sometimes I find when I apply top coat it does that and sometimes when I skip top coat, it's ok. I just don't get it. I think I need to get them professionally done and have acrylic nails.
