1:15:25 Didn't she know there was someone in her house?
It's a great piece of drama, beautifully paced, excellent acting. But parts of it trouble me. The black mother fooled by Tennison's watch trick, and the implied falsehood of her emotions/lack of intelligence; contrasted with the nice middle-class white mother's genuine and moving response to the same set of relics of her daughter. That's one hell of a racial stereotype right there.
I didn't take it that Tennison's watch trick implied falsehood of her emotions or a lack of intelligence on the mother's part. Instead, it's that she was so overcome with grief, so utterly desperate for answers and justice and closure, that she saw her daughter and her loss in everything because the police had totally failed her and her daughter.
I think the black mother wasn't portrayed as false but distraught with grief. Terrible as it seems, a dead daughter seemed more bearable than a vanished one - but I don't think there was any suggestion that she was faking.
