Do you ever find yourself not enjoying games anymore?
I stopped playing multiplayer games for 3 months now because they became boring and sweaty. Decided to just play singleplayer games, and I gotta say, I've been having such a fun time. Dead Space Remake and Resident Evil 4 Remakes specifically. Even went back to other singleplayer games that I've never spent time 'mastering'.
Yes… tbh the only game I ever loved was halo… but since it’s been such a monumental disappointment full of pointless cosmetics… I stopped playing halo and uninstalled… now I find myself uninterested in any other game bc I know it’s not gonna be as good as halo… even halo isn’t as good as halo anymore, lol
it depends on the game really. but yea. I do. I am 23 years old at the time of this post, and I always look back to Halo Reach and black ops 2 ( the main games i use to grind tf out of back then ), Halo 3 is fantastic as well, I have many fond memories playing with my buddies ( who at the time actually lived in my area ) now when i play games, I can't find myself to enjoy em. tho i have gotten a vr headset recently back in October last year and absolutely love it, been mainly playing blade and sorcery even tho i have other games on it lmao. most games aside from vr just dont hit that sweet spot they used to.
those are both amazing remakes. I haven't finished either, but enjoy both a lot
don't get me wrong now, I do enjoy most modern games... I just wish that things weren't littered with microtransactions and the like ( yes you aint really gotta buy em ) but for some games, you unfortunately have to, if you wanna progress to a new area or whatever. back in the 2010's and prior, you had to grind ( with minimal paying if at all ) to get to the next area of a game or have to grind to get the coolest armor.... imo, these days, it just seems everything is beginning to become locked behind paywalls like battlepases and basically giving out armor and the like for free...
I think the biggest influence of gaming fun is playing with friends. When you’re younger it’s easier to always play with friends because everyone’s on the same or similar schedules. But when you grow up everyone has differing responsibilities. Gaming is always better with friends
this is a fantastic point!
TRUE! Not to mention they don't even MAKE most games to be played by more than one person anymore, everybody gave up on the splitscreen
Yeah even single player experiences were group efforts back in the day
I have no friends aside from one non-gamer, and gaming is getting old for me at a very fast rate
Speak for yourself, I find much more enjoyment playing games alone. Gaming isn't always better with friends, that is subjective as hell.
At 37, being a dad, and with a gaming background that goes back all the way to 1990, I found my enjoyment back on videogames the moment I stopped playing ANYTHING Live Service. Seriously, just good old single player with no bullshit features goes a long way.
Facts
This is why I've put 25 hours into Lawn Mowing Simulator on my PS5 over the last two weeks. Also 34 here.
I am 42 and enjoy playing Super Mario and Sonic games with my 6 year old son. It reminds me of my own childhood with the NES and Sega Genesis. Streets of Rage 4 is really nice. I don't like the modern video games that look too realistic. I prefer to watch a movie than play those movie type of video games. 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
@@TASwims Don't knock it until you try it... it's a supremely relaxing, peaceful, and colorful game to play on my 65" OLED while I'm smoking a bowl in the evening and listening to chill music while winding down before bed. No stress at all, just mowing.
Yea he plays too many “bro gamer” games
I remember that 2006-2009 were some of the worst years of my life, yet I look back at those days with blinders and instead remember all the fun I had with gaming and movies. Funny the way memory works
Same here man. Games were an escape
@@thestockfother Games were an escape, but even that has been taken away by studios injecting politics and current events into everything now :(
@@MrHowardMoonthat is subjective. For me politics and stuff isn't bothersome. But using games to escape family drama, parents picking favorites, and relatives that mischaracterize you. Ostracism can't harm you if you make it a strength 😁
@@MrHowardMoon Agreed. Media in general is becoming obnoxious with the crap they're shoving in.
PS2-PS3-360 Era was the best
I played Prototype 2 for the first time last month and I was so engaged with the story and gameplay I pulled a all nighter playing start to finish. God damn that's how a game should feel, I felt young again loving every second of it
I will open a game, sit on the menu screen for like 10 minutes and then get off lol
Back in the day, every new release seemed like an absolute banger. Now, I might get excited about a game every 5 years.
So true. The last game i was hyped about was doom eternal and since i dont care about a single release. all overpriced, generic, broken and buggy games except Yakuza franchise! Yakuza is what makes me feel like im 16 again and enjoying games.
I am now 23 and often I sit there and don´t know what to play. I just got older and I have to accept it.
Gaming is still fun, but youre often beeing remembered by real life, that you have other things to do in life. As you said, when we were younger the main goal was "not to fail school".
Often me and my gaming friends go back to old games, but it just dosen´t feel the same.
Absolutely, my situation
I’m 24 .. same issue here. Now I just get on and it feels like I’m wasting so much especially when I have no one to really play with.
THIS spoke to me on a spiritual level....I feel the EXACT same at 23 😮💨
I'm 25 now and have been feeling like this since I was 22. There's been a few games where I sat through playing non stop due to having no friends and having a light work schedule at times but other then that I can hardly finish a game or get into it
I’m 37. I was going through a similar problem. Games just were not holding my attention anymore. I’d buy a game from a franchise I love only to burn out and not even finish it. For me however. I realized it was my work life. It was not just effecting me enjoying video games, but pretty much everything. I just wanted to come home and watch tv and turn my brain off. I made a change in terms of my job, and well. Life got better and now I’m back to enjoying my hobbies and a few new ones.
I’m glad that your life is getting better!
I’m 34 in cyber security, work life is ruff sometimes. Only time I’ve game is on those “rainy days” now.
What job do you do now, if you don't mind me asking? 😊
Absolutely correct there mate.

@@LouW2132 no mate, i was asking someone
I feel like you’re correct to a degree, but at the same time, I’ve personally played games recently that have absolutely blown me away and are easily among my favorite games of all time. Some genres have aged better than others, but it’s unarguable that specifically FPS titles have stagnated considerably because of mismanaged studios, monetization, and misunderstanding customer expectations.
His whole point is that games still are just as, if not more great than past ones. It's just getting old that makes gaming harder to enjoy.
@@val3489 I get what he’s saying but I don’t fully agree. Halo 2 is my favorite game of all time, but I’ve still enjoyed gaming to the same degree or more as I get older
@@val3489 I mean, they really aren't. Like, no contest. And that is not nostalgia. That's just honesty. I even had my boyfriend play through Half Life 1 and he fully agrees with me, without any rose-tinted nostalgia glasses that the game is amazing. It's not true for all genres. RPGs still have good ones coming out, but FPS is definitely one of those that have stagnated quite badly.
@@val3489 nah games were definitely better back than single player or multiplayer
@@AlienTreeGuy exactly pit 360 games against ps4 games no contest 360 beats it
My family was very strict with video games when I was young. At most I’d get 2 hours a week with the exception of holiday and summer breaks. It honestly sucked, but the one thing that came out of that was me learning how to enjoy the little moments I did have with gaming, and now as an adult, I still enjoy video games since I didn’t burn myself out as a kid. Even with a stressful job and bills to pay, gaming is still an enjoyable experience, so I do believe being burned out as a kid plays a big part in this decline in enjoyment with video games.
Facts
You don't burn out as a kid so easily.
I'd argue that children find games more engaging and adventurous.
I was in a similar position. Only allowed 15-30 mins a night. Mum would even set a timer. I found I enjoyed games the most in my mid 20s I'm mid 30s now. Still love it especially co-op with a good friend.
@@nedson6503 you actually do, kids have more fresh perspective, so fill that with too much gaming, over time its gonna feel old

@@TheWehzy I felt like this until I was 25 when The Division came out in 2016. That game literally got me hook. Idk why... it was so different then anything I ever played. They killed the vibe with The Division 2 so I stopped playing altogether but recently on my main channel got super successful as a RUclipsr animating games. So now I play games I never played before and it's not so bad. I truly think games aren't as good as they were back in the day tho. Because sometimes out of nowhere some game will come and blow me away still like right now is BattleBit.

I went through that phase of thinking that no game would hold my attention again. I subscribed to the game pass and played dozens of games of genres that I used to like, I finished very few and even these didn't stay in my memory. But over time I realized that what had changed were my tastes. My mind, patience and free time are not what they were 15 years ago. Today I found new genres and styles of games that fascinate me and fulfill my satisfaction in different ways and so I continue to play.👍
Good points well made as always.
I’m in my 40’s and have had the same feelings. I can look back to Goldeneye and remember some great times but as a gaming highlight Halo 3 is just the goat. I had a squad of mates who would meet up once a week, in person, to game. A lot of my gaming buddies have either moved on, or passed away, so those days are long gone. I still play a lot of FPS and will pretty much play anything but every now and again I go play platformers or something just to have a break.
Yeah I feel that. Most of my irl buddies don't game as much or if they do our schedules don't really allign anymore with everyone having different adult responsiblities.
I'm about the same age so was in my 20's for alot of my fav games, the 00s were just a great time in general. Halo 3 was amazing but my fav competitive game of all time that I was also at my absolute peak in was halo 2 having a clan of friends and pushing rank in that game, seeing your progress was such a journey that's hard to get in games these days. Ranking systems in general just don't feel as rewarding as H2's. Peeked at 38 (which was considered very good at the time) That was the 1 complaint I had for H3. Rank was too easy had 50 in first few months. Most my halo friends have moved on but I still have a few I play with on occasion and some newer friends I met it the yrs after. the closest halo feeling rank rush I get these day are pushing masters GM in overwatch. But it won't ever be the same as those halo days
We grew up, became more cynical, more picky because we know better. But no matter how old we get we will keep playing videogames here and then, our time as a hardcore player may have passed but we can still enjoy our games if we really want to :)
Being 57 Now I totally remember enjoying gaming way more in my younger years. I could sit all day playing games like OBLIVION , SKYRIM and HALO. Today not only do I no longer have the time but other responsibilities must come first. I still game from time to time, in fact I just finished the Last of Us . Anyway. Thanks for the video and keep enjoying gaming ☺️
I still play Skyrim and Fallout 4 😂
@@robotron1236 These games have a bigger playerbase then most people can imagine.
I think the biggest thing 90s-00s era games have on modern games is the very trial and error mindset of both players and developers. Games tried new things a lot more willingly back then, and we as players were far better about "not knowing" and "figuring out" what was being tried. Much of this change could very well be attributed to the rise of the internet and how that affected the space as a whole. Better maybe, different in some ways, could we use a bit more of that experimental nature back definitely.
i can say modern gaming can be a hit or miss for me but getting old definitely get to you after some time and can sometimes never find the time to spend on playing or hanging out with ppl on online or IRL especially when those friends moved away, busy, or just lose touch with them and i think that just life catching up
While I do think growing up may be apart of it, I genuinely think its because games just aren't as good nowadays. I didn't have access to gaming like that when I was a kid, so going back and playing some of those older games, sure they may have been a bit jankey in some places but the passion and level of quality put into them is undeniable. I personally think if a great game drops that is of quality and has real passion put into it, people will play it and love it. Hi-Fi Rush, Elden Ring, Hogwarts, Dead Space remake, and others prove that. The issue is that a lot of games lack passion or polish or they just don't try. They're content with being mediocre, playing it safe, and following generic game design trends. They're buggy, plagued by corporate greed, and the devs don't listen to their communities, and all of this hurts the user experience. So again, I'm not saying that nostalgia has absolutely nothing to do with it. Are there some people out there who swear that everything released after a certain date is trash and nothing after that date can ever be good? Yes, but I don't think these people are the majority. I believe people are capable of learning to love something new, and if a game is of quality, has passion behind it, everyone will play it and enjoy themselves.
Games for the most part are better nowadays, but it does depend on the genre. FPS games I would say have gotten far worse. RPGs have gotten way better or single player narrative games have gotten way better. Even Indie games are way better than AAA games. It also takes longer to make games. Back then you could pump out a game in around 1-2 years. Nowadays it takes at least 3-5 years. A lot of that has to do with how corporate and poorly managed studios are now, but games these days are more ambitious. Elden Ring took 6 years to make and it's one of the best RPG games ever made (I think it's the best personally). Ofc games back then were amazing I mean Halo 3, Mario 64, Half life 2, Skyrim and more are just classic bangers of games, but that doesn't mean gaming has not gotten better. I've been playing more Indie games or just less FPS multiplayer games and man I have found so many good ones. Valheim is one of my favorite survival games. I found Remnent two years ago on sale and It was shocking how much I loved it. GoW was amazing. I feel like a lot of us grew up on FPS games and there just hasn't been very good one's that I can remember, but there are many amazing one's out there.
@@punchykarma6685 also good points
Nah games these days are much better than before obviously, the only reason you saying it is because those games were first of its kind and your childhood memories attached with it. Games these days are amazing, there so many games besides warzone and battlefield
actually games have always been bad
@@i.d.6492 nah games just always been bad. theres good games out there but most of them are junk
Yeah 2012 was definitely the peak of where my nostalgia comes from.
Love you gears of War and persona 4.
Not only games, but movies also were much more enjoyable back then. I think it has something to do with simplicity. Gameplays and movies used to be simpler and easier to understand.
@@Black_Sheep186 exactly, every movie and game these days has a weird forced agenda to it.... it's not true to the source of what entertainment should be made for. I don't want to watch an action movie to get lectured about some bullshit, I watch it for the action!
Not just movies and games.. Life wa more enjoyable back then.
Nowadays, everything just has to be woke. Politics and the SJW culture have ruined gaming and Hwood
I'm in my thirties and the responsibilities really sank in for me. Same thing when I was a teen, I just had school and a part time job and friend drama etc, but now I have way more responsibilities so I think that plays a factor.
Just hit 29 a few days ago. I remember sinking thousands of hours into halo 2 and 3. It took me some time to understand and realize i was the problem and not necessarily new games. Things will never be the “golden” days again for some of us, and that’s okay. This video explained everything I’ve felt over the last 3 ish years.
Imo games are just worse. Story is bland, gameplay either overcomplicated or way too simple and no exciting or cool features were added.
There are good games out there though that give you exactly that childhood experience back.
It's just that these games release only every 5+ years nowadays with only garbage inbetween.
It’s also because 343’s halo are doo doo compared to Bungies games for the most part
@@MyN0N4M3 I have to disagree, especially with the part about good releases happening once every 5+ years. I feel opinions on modern gaming will differ based on the genre, but even when keeping things broad there have been so many good/great releases that ppl forget about. I found an article "Top Games Each Year Over the Last 10 Years". A few examples: GTA5, Persona 5R, Uncharted 4, RER4, Outer Worlds, Elden Ring, etc..
Three of my modern favorites include Overwatch (most unique and engaging FPS I've ever played aside from Halo), Nioh 2 (best combat system I've seen in an action RPG bar none), and Tekken 7 (most accessible entry in the series yet still deep for veterans). Don't get me wrong there are modern duds like Cyberpunk 2077, but bad games came out back in the day as well.
Good good GOOD ass video man! Straight up you pulled me out of weeks of major depression with your words, I no longer feel the need to chase my past highs and will further embrace new experiences
It’s crazy that I’ve been hit really hard by this feeling the last few weeks. When you also make gaming content on top of your everyday responsibilities you have that itch to play what’s relevant, regardless of your interest in. It took my awhile to get over that and move past games I was playing simply for the sake of content and spend my times on games I truly enjoy or genres that I never really gave a chance. Awesome video dude
damn near made me cry just soaking everything in man. great video.
I believe the theme is “Triple A Gaming is dying”. The Indie scene is thriving more than ever.
Scum and Hell Let Loose for me
You're absolutely right, I'm currently digging into the boomer shooters category (wether it's linear story such as Dusk or leaning towards roguelite with Immortal redneck) and I'm having an absolute blast.
Don't forget Double A. From Software is an exceptional example of that.
I resent indie games
@@madmonty4761 Tell me why.
I also turn 29 this year. Yesterday I deleted all my gaming accounts and only have two jackpot party games on my steam left. I am behind the ball in several points of my life, and gaming now just feels like a chore. I believe it was due to aging, but also the last few AAA games that I was looking forward to just felt unsatisfying. I feel REALLY free right now and super motivated to get my life back on track. Good video!
Good luck on your life journey bud! Sometimes we all need a little boost to move on to better things

You hit the nail on the head for me towards the end there. I started to lose interest in games over the years and I think it's largely because I'm a creature of habit, not only did I tend to stick to the same couple of genres but I would replay the same games over and over again on a loop. Its good to know what you like but it's easy to burn yourself out like that.
I’ve been playing old games with the servers down tbh but 2000-2015 was the golden years of gaming
I think it’s about age as well. I’m still young, but I have seen a pattern with many RUclipsrs, especially gaming RUclipsrs.
When you are young you are able to put so many hours in a game and you simply don’t care. But when you get older, you begin to look for other things more meaningful in life.
Everyone should know that once you reach your late 20’s or early 30’s, you begin to ask yourself questions you never asked like, “what should I do,” and “will I have kids?”.
I’m still young, but I have been around for long enough to see how people evolve from a young adult to an adult.

It makes me happy knowing halo 3 was such a big part of our lives
Yep Halo 2 was my childhood so was Halo 3 and Halo Reach
Mine was Minecraft, clash of clans, universe sandbox, stw fortnite, and the Wii, unfortunately no one told me what halo was.
The whole Halo franchise was something else man, what a time to be alive

Only for those born 1992 and onwards. Halo CE was the one and only Halo for me. The rest were either okay or just plain MEH!
Man this nailed it on the head. I've been struggling to find a good game to play and couldn't figure out why. This explained it perfectly. Well done!
This video hit home for me for real i definitely don’t as much anymore miss those days
I think games from our youth definitely bring back good memories that we cling to because we can fleetingly capture that same feeling of self we had at that time. I'm now 36, but when Dark Souls came out, I remember not being into it and thinking I'd lost the passion. I picked it up a couple years later and now it's yet another nostalgic memory.
Yep. It has nothing to do with the state of current games. Every generation thinks that the media they grew up with was the best, but they don't realize they are just nostalgic for the person they were, the people they were with, and the memories that were made. Put yourself in a modern game at the same age, the same life stage, and with the same people and you would feel the same way about current games in a decade or two. Games are better than they have ever been, and I'm thrilled to be just old enough (34) to have witnessed pretty much the entire evolution of them/the internet.
More and more I appreciate single player games. Getting lost in the world of Elden Ring gave me the feelings I had when I was younger experiencing Ocarina of Time. While I'm a bit younger than you (19), I can understand what you're talking about. Great video rash. One of your best!
Oh my sweet summer child, what do you know about nostalgia?

I'm the same age as you and have the same exact feeling when I've been gaming recently. I think alot of it is just age, but I have also changed my gaming habits. You definitely made a good point about trying out new genres. I play mostly competitive multiplayer games now, and have found myself being more frustrated than having fun. I saw a clip of Halo Wars in this video and it inspired me to buy and play that for the first time since it came out. I do think variety is the spice of life, which is something I seemed to understand more as a kid than i do now.
taking a break from gaming helps alot, i havent touched halo since the week of infinites launch when i was feeling the same way, i redownloaded it this past week and am having a blast grinding ranked all over again.
This is why I mainly stick to singleplayer/co-op games now. A lot of MP games ask way too much time from you. If you take a week off, you miss out on a lot, god forbid you take a month or two off.
I really like your point about today's generation looking back today with fond memories, I've thought about this myself. In VR there's lots of crazy mods for some of the bigger games, and it made me think how kids are gonna look back with so much nostalgia. It's hard to accept that many games are targeting kids-young adults who have a lot more time on their hands and energy. It's not really bad, but it can make geezers like us feel a little left out
I don't think gaming is particularly bad now, there was a lot of shovel-ware games in ye olden times, but a lot of practices from AAA titles gets really tiring. Games like Doom Eternal and Resident Evil are diamonds in the rough, sadly. Not being able to look to the biggest companies for quality games is annoying, and it's hard not to be cynical these days.
I stick to retro gaming now I miss playing Halo multiplayer and COD black ops 2 I'm crying thinking back about it
You have more responsibilities and things to consider now, and not playing the right game in that time you need that escape can just sour the desire to play. It’s worth exploring new IPs and genres and finding your new interest
I totally have the same feeling with gaming and I am 29yrs old as well. That’s why I love rp games or open world games like Rust and Dayz because you just don’t know what could possibly happen on your gaming time. There is something with these games that makes you feel excited because of the unscripted encounter with other players.
this video is literally what i feel about gaming these days..and yeah its true that you need to have a squad(group of frnds) to enjoy games...specially online multiplayer games
Haven't watched the video yet but a huge part of not enjoying games anymore comes down being an adult with responsibilities (that is always in the back of our minds eating at us). Also, that sense of awe is no longer there because we already experienced it when we were young.
We can enjoy games that are 10 hours, which is perfect for busy adults
I think a lot of why it’s not as fun anymore is because we’re in a social media era in life where everything is 20X more about winning or competitiveness that we forget to Breathe 💔🎮
Completely agree on the competitiveness.
@@doob. 👍🏽
for me it's more of if i can make my character strong and rich, then why not make myself like that too and that mindset prevents me from actually grinding and playing like i used to. it sucks that gaming time has become a waste of time for me.
honestly this video really is an eye opener, thank you for this :)
If I go back to last October where Halo was the only game I was still worried about. I would say the state of gaming today sucks. But now that I've finally moved on. I can't remember the last time I've enjoyed video games this much. Good vid.
I think we all knew this (something along those lines) but still need to hear it. And regarding the variety aspect, I think as I have gotten older, I have started to branch out more from my norm which is fps games. Just (somewhat) recently, I have tried out ace combat 7 and also alien isolation. And had a blast playing both! Definitely would recommend seeking out new games outside of your usual genre.
when i played the finals closed beta, i was blown away. i was experiencing gaming again for the first time. i was competative, i was screaming laughing swearing. it was amazing. i can not wait for that game to come out.
Arrash, I just turned 29 this April and I can definitely relate to this. One game thats brought me back to that "grinding the game for hours" enjoyment I had back in the day was Valheim. When I first got the game, I sank about 300 hours over the course of several months. Now I'm peaking 400. It's so refreshing and I highly recommend it!
I think a major thing with getting older is its harder to sweat for days on end without feeling like you are wasting time and have loads of shit to do.
Back when I was a kid I could just set aside weeks and weeks to gaming. These days even if I have the time I feel actively lazy after playing for a few hours.
Also not having friends to play with is pretty huge. Makes gaming so much better having someone to share it with
Facts, I think most people are bored cause they need a gamer friend or think more of their life on the games probably, escaping reality. I'm a loner and some how I still have one good gamer friend to play with. People need the right game to play. Playing old games I beat makes no sense to play over when I did that already.
The only thing that makes me really sad in modern gaming is the racing genre
The racing genre is the only genre in games I don’t play, how bad has it gotten exactly.
dead genre tbh
When I was a kid I used to put tons of time into the same game and play it over and over again without hesitation... I was also pretty happy with whatever game my parents bought me. As I have gotten older I have become way pickier with the titles and its usually harder for me to jump back into a game after a few day break from it. I still love gaming as my top free time activity but I do not get the same kick I did when I was a kid or even in my late teens-early 20's. Great video Arrrash, very well made 💙
Man, your story is almost identical to mine, I have found other outlets beside gaming to fill my time, but I always come back to grind a good single player.
I disagree that games are just as good now. Games went from being developed for player fun and copies sold, to free to play casinos with a game attached. Gaming is huge now and corporate greed has got it's greedy fingers all over it.
I don't get it either. The "you'll remember the good times when you were a kid, gaming was fun for you as a kid, it's just nostalgia of a time with no responsibilities blablabla" argument does not apply here.
I'm really hooked to play something immersive and sink into a game to find myself at 5 early in the morning. Just like when you was younger. But there is simply nothing out there that interests me. I see shiny superhero games which are shit, unfinished open world games which are broken as fuck, another copy of some multiplayer game, another Ass Creed or Far Cry.
STALKER 2 is the only game I'll buy. Simply because I hope that it is once again a Singleplayer sandbox which can be played endlessly. A little bit more hardcore than your usual open world game. Something to master. I'm simply done with shiny AAA titles which have their 5th or 12h entry in the series. There is no innovation. Nothing to see. Just the same shit as before. Fucking boring.
I find myself searching for a new experience on steam every weekend but it's just all the same. Some bullshit I've seen before. There is not enough shit where you need to use your brain. I'd like to see more immersive sims with no handholding.
My point is: it's not a nostalgia and childhood thing. There is just nothing innovative and complex enough out there that I would care. So people thing I'm nostalgic when I say games used to be better.
I took a break from gaming for awhile and I've got to say it helped, but it didn't take long to start feeling like I was wasting my time gaming again. I've found scheduling when I can game to feel the best for me.
Yooooo, Relient K!!!!!
It’s quite sad I’m seeing more videos like this it just shows how many people are now feeling like this (including me). This video encapsulates my feelings, and the fact that people who are growing up at this time will look on games right now and have the same feelings we have about games we grew up with is a fantastic point. It’s really just perspective, and those said people will probably look on this video and not believe any of it. But in 10 years time or even less will resonate more with this.
Or it's a popular topic, so everyone is cynically jumping on it.
Awesome vid, its like you said we were younger with less responsibilities. With less responsibilities comes with being "in the moment" more. We could truly focus on enjoying the game and not have the lingering adult responsibilities like eating, rent/mortgage, work, health etc. We didnt worry about all that growing up, we just gamed. Imo for me to bring the joy back to games was to try to live in the moment and stop comparing those experiences in the past to now. "Comparison is the thief of joy" as they say. I come from the Street Fighter 2 on SNES was my first real experience gaming. So my pre/teen years was Final Fanstasy 7, Halo (1), Phantasy Star Online, Socom etc. Been gaming for over 30 years. Had to sit back and actually think of how to get that feeling and for me it was focusing on the NOW when I game and enjoy the experience for what it is.
It's undeniable that gaming is way more fun with your friends. But for single player games, they still hit the same as long as you're not constantly using video games to entertain yourself.
Hideo kojima he is tha guy he can still make me feel exciting for gaming
I started playing vr games with my friends and it’s loads of fun. Definitely restored some of the fun I needed
Yes!! this is how I have been thinking for awhile been telling people that it is less that gaming today sucks more it just wont feel the same as it did for many reason like the ones you mentioned and that you need to go in with a new perspective or explore or just maybe you're just that into it the same or even getting over the skill gap feels much harder from when you return after so long of not playing. I almost wasn't going to click on this video cause I was thinking "oh here we go again" but this is a great video well done!
Gaming’s a lot more fun if you don’t prioritize on multiplayer games or a particular genre.
There’s a good reason most streamers play a variety of games instead of the same stuff every day.
Even without streamers, people have been enjoying a lot of new single-player releases this year. And more to come…
There’s still games that can capture that nostalgic feel, their just hard to come by. Trying new stuff like Valheim or Demonologist I felt like I wasn’t wasting my time and actually enjoyed playing them. Good games are def out there, just gotta try new things and something will click.
There will never be a game like halo 2 btb these days....you had the whole team of 8 people working together....you couldn't even get 8 people talking together now without it just being noise
I'm a 35 year old Dad and I've been playing games since I was 8. I've never been a big Nintendo gamer and nothing can replicate that first decade of gaming I experienced, but in the last year, sitting down with my 5 year old boy to play through all the latest Mario games on the Switch with him has reignited those youthful gaming feelings. I was living vicariously through my boys enjoyment of Mario and something I highly recommend for those gamer Mums and Dads!
W dad
I agree with you. What keeps me coming back now is the immersion and simulation and complexity.
VR combat and normal flight simulators specifically.
I grew up without friends or hobbies, so gaming was everything to me. I'd put in six hours a day easy, stopping only when I absolutely had to. But then one day, I started getting bored. I'd force myself to keep going, but it only grew. Now I just can't get in to any game, classic banger or fresh AAA heat. For me, I think this is my soul communicating that it's time to move on. Maybe spend my time doing something tangible, something constructive, rather than staring endlessly at screen.
It’s all perspective. Your perspective changed which is why you’re bored. And you can change your perspective like you change clothes. The fact that you said “do something constructive” just shows which perspective is influencing your actions. Perspectives run your life. If you don’t control your perspectives, then life experiences will control your perspectives and then you’ll call it fate. If you just shifted your perception on things, it can change the way you enjoy things. But we all know you won’t do that.
It's hard to say the problems with modern games since there is a HUGE crowd of people that will defend any game for no real reason
This video hurts my soul. My “Halo 3” was Battlefield 2142 back in like 2007… I’m almost 29 now and nothing feels the same. Life is more than gaming now and I miss it.
Oooooh my god the nostalgia of grinding modern warfare skins was the only time I truly enjoyed call of duty. The AK, m40a3, p90, USP were so good.
basically I realized the reason I wasn't having fun playing games any more was because there was no community for me to interact with outside of the games, sites like reddit killed the gaming forum and with it the cool interactions and friendships you could build through them and new communities that are subs of the main community that hone in to your mindset.
the big change where you get older and everyone you know gets older and also moves on in life also doesnt help as it becomes harder to find time to hang out with your RL friends and your Online friends as our lives become more complicated over time with relationships work and even kids/family.
I play old games to feel how I used to feel, which was good. New games for me personally don’t grab on which kinda sucks. Guess I’m getting older.
No it's because they objectively suck, same with movies nowadays. This whole nostalgia narrative is a myth to damage control this laughable generation
Love the halo music in the background, so nostalgic
One of the best RUclips videos I have ever seen. Absolutely fantastic video. Thank you
Parents never wanted to let me buy a decent PC. Was always stuck with 10+ yo hardware and was 'doomed' to replay the same old games over and over again. Now that I got myself a high end 1080p PC i finally enjoy all of the games i missed out on in the past 10 years or so. I think I enjoy gaming more now then I did when I was younger. Even at uni with exams to do I find time and enjoyment in games :)
Couldn’t agree more. Don’t wanna stomp on your parade, but my ass has been enjoying the shit out of the mass effect trilogy when I have exams in less than two weeks.
I have asked myself this question more and more in recent years. Like you I used to spend many many hours just playing old PS2 games or even stuff like CoD MW3. However as I've grown older I tend to notice that I can only game for an hour or two before having to take a break, even on days when I have the time to game. I personally never thought it was the games fault as I can recognize the sheer leap in ambition and scope of modern games, but rather I thought it was something wrong with me that I couldn't seem to find the energy to hold those long marathon sessions of gaming.
With so many people making these videos and a ton of people feeling this same way, I think its a combination of getting older and games also just not having the same love nowadays. Theres SO MUCH baggage that comes with modern gaming that it takes away from what theyre about, simply being fun.
I’m in a similar situation, but I feel guilty now for spending the amount of time playing video games that I did as a kid. I’ve been paying attention to the amount of hours I’m putting into gaming and wondering what else I could be doing with that time.
You definitely nailed it on the head in the video; opening up to new genres is key to continue enjoying games. I've tried many genres I never played when I was younger and it has lead to me going back into the large catalogs in said genres. I think not enjoying games is more of a thing as we get older rather than games being worse, even as I argue that modern gaming is bad.
You should try Returnal. Such an underrated game. You won't be disappointed or I'll kiss it 😉
This hit me recently. Gran Turismo 7 was the fix, hop on for a few races, all of sudden it was just pure fun again
You had me tearing up over great vid
Up over here
tell me about it
the gaming industry is fucked
nothing is good at the moment
It’s been this way For 4 years
Great video… I think it’s a combination of modern games being ass for the most part and getting old. Growing up sucks
The fact you got 20k subs and you have 25% of your subs like. That’s huge. Great job. Subscribed.
I feel this. I just recently contemplated selling my game systems. I can’t remember the last time I played a game. Just not really interested anymore. Not only that but after OG MW2 multiplayer, nothing has been as good ever since.
Ha! Jokes on you, the new Zelda is awe-some!!
Gaming is just a cope for reality. Quit while you can you will regret gaming your life away. Your already feeling the staleness.
i think its the fact that it used to be gaming with friends that we miss. The lobbys are not full of buddies, Friends list are empty and no one communicates in game anymore and parties up!
I've noticed all of your gameplay footage is FPS games. Maybe you've burned out of the genre? I felt the same way towards Minecraft.
I found playing a variety of different genres help a lot.
here's a list I copied a long time ago:
ace combat - epic combination of metal gear and microsoft flight simulator
hollow knight - really good metroidvania
factorio - amazing factory building sandbox game, but maybe avoid this one if you want to do anything else for the next 48 hours
portal 2 - favorite game of all time, amazing puzzles
metro exodus - if your pc can run it, it's really good
pretty much any doom game - not the deepest of experiences, but very fun and difficult
a hat in time - great mario-64 like with a surprising amount of content
rimworld - colony building game, enough mods to make a second game
stardew valley - only farming game I've ever enjoyed
dishonored - great stealth/story fps, cool choices, second one if you like it enough
prey (2017) - similar to dishonored, by the same people, but more of a spiritual successor to:
bioshock - 1 and 2, recommend the originals rather than the remasters if you can get them to run on your computer. all time classic
terraria - pretty well-known 2d sandbox game, lots of bossfights and another game with tons of mods
enter the gungeon - funny top-down twinstick shooter roguelike. even if you don't know what some of those words mean, still great game
outer wilds - not to be confused with the outer worlds. cannot recommend this enough. story driven roguelike. DO NOT SPOIL YOURSELF.
valheim - terraria but 3d and viking themed. also really good.
octodad: dadliest catch - hilarious rage-game. there is no reason this has such a low metacritic score, it's a great game.
project zomboid - tough-as-nails zombie apocalypses survival game with permadeath.
vessel - difficult indie 2d puzzle game. very thematic, might require some looking-up.
control - cool 3rd person shooter with a bizarre story and cool brutalist architecture, if that's your thing. made by the people who made alan wake.
dead space - all time classic, really scary if it's your first time playing. slightly less scary once you get a certain weapon.
goat simulator - sadly somewhat short on content, but still entertaining to play around with for a while.
slime rancher - ok maybe i lied about stardew valley. much more chill than some other games on this list.
stanley parable - funny story-driven game about a guy in an office
singularity - relatively little-known linear fps that still holds up today. also a little bit scary.
spelunky - one of the few "rage games" i like. platformer roguelike
the swapper - difficult 2d puzzle game with a dark story and some pretty cool graphics.
deus ex: human revolution - good story driven semi-linear rpg fps game. not too groundbreaking, but still fun.
dark souls series - reaaally hard if you don't know what you're doing, but you figure things out eventually. interesting story, mechanics, and really good combat.
titanfall 2 - movement shooter to end all movement shooters. if you're having server problems, look into the northstar client- community hosted servers
ultrakill - doom with a retro 3d style. nuff said.
You know it’s hard times when even cracking teams are releasing uploads like “ Chimney Sweeper Simulator “ &
“ Protest 2: Sign Creator in VR “
I have set a goal in 2023 to play more single player games and finishing the game before trying a new one. so far im about 10 complete this year and I have gotten my itch back. Good video brother.
I've been slowly coming back to minecraft and i've found the way to keep that exiting is to grab some friends to play with and make and idea or plan board, if you always have plans, it encourages you to keep playing past iron armour. frankly i got sick of call of duty and my voice as a veteran not being heard. so im moving on, trying ps5 games that have came to pc such as spiderman and horizon. Im starting to fall in love again and even have come back to vr gaming too!
Great vid ❤
You explained my fillings literally
I feel the same way, im 25 and i dont get exctied about video games anymore, when i was younger i was so hyped about a new game coming out always the first to pre order waiting in huge lines outside the store and i loved it. Now i dont even care and barely play any games, i think its just me growing up and finding life experiences and travelling more fun.
I game a lot as a kid and could still remember how excited and enjoyed i was. I haven't felt such emotions for years now but maybe someday, there will be a game that would give us the sparks again.
I am also turning 29 this year bro. Highly relatable video dude
My problem is choosing a game to stick with and play. I finally had to get decisive and pick something. It’s crazy to me the time wasted just trying to pick out a game to try out.
This is why I’ve gotten into emulation. Replaying old favorites, trying games I missed way back when, and revisiting games that didn’t capture my attention when I was less mature.
I’m slowly getting back into gaming because of it. They don’t make them like they used to.
