  • Today, we’re dropping the needle on a track that a revolutionary artist wrote as a favor for his bandmate’s side project. When Prince and the Revolution bassist Brown Mark asked Prince to write him a song for his side project Mazarati Prince picked up his acoustic guitar and whipped up the song “KISS” in a few minutes. He didn’t think anything of it. But when Prince checked on the song’s progress a day later, he realized it was vastly improved… He knew it was a hit and it was too good for this band... he wanted it back. So he locked himself in the studio for four hours and wrote the funkiest #1 hit of 1986. Then promising to give his bandmate Brown Mark a co-writing credit, he tacked it on his album Parade… sending it to the top of the Billboard charts. The only thing is, he never shared the writing credits. It’s the story of how a stolen song became one of the biggest hits of this Prince's career, and how was really the catalyst behind the break up of one of the biggest bands of the 80s… NEXT on the Professor of Rock.

Hey music junkies, Professor of Rock, always here to celebrate the greatest artists and the greatest songs of all time. If you remember staying up to watch Friday Night Videos especially if you didn’t have MTV.make sure to, subscribe below right now. I know that you are going to dig this channel if you love music.
Enigmatic, eccentric, cloaked in purple… there is no one else like him in popular music history. And there never will be. Prince Rogers Nelson, simply known as “Prince”, was a uniquely talented multi-instrumentalist, an innovative musical genius, and a prolific songwriter and producer… creating a storied, decades-long career of essential albums and hit singles… including showing up some of the biggest legends with his guitar playing here: I mean the guy forgot he was human for at least a few minutes….And today, we’re zeroing in on one of his biggest hits.
One of his 5 #1s and one that has quite a bit of controversy surrounding it. Since he more or less wrote it for a rookie band and then stole it back the next day when he realized how good it was. I guess he didn’t really steal it since it was his song, to begin with… and then it broke up one of the 80s greatest bands… I’m talking about the classic hit Kiss… from his 1986 album Parade.
But the thing is, for all of Prince’s genius, he didn’t do it alone. Maybe you can argue he could have. Still, Prince knew how to surround himself with talented musicians who could bring his sonic visions to life. In later years there was the New Power Generation and 3rdeyegirl, but during his commercial peak in the 80s, it was all about The Revolution. Prince put together the first pieces of the Revolution in 1978 in the form of a touring band. In these early stages on the group consisted of Andre Cymone on bass, Dez Dickerson on guitar and vocals, Gayle Chapman and Matt Fink, aka Doctor Fink on keyboards, and Bobby Z on Drums.
Prince experimented with them as a side project, calling them The Rebels and recorded material with them in 1979. The project however was shelved. What did emerge in 1979 though, was Prince’s self-titled sophomore album, featuring his first breakthrough hit in the US: I Wanna Be Your Lover. Prince’s backing band would go through some line-up

I’m with you, sort of. I was a rocker as a kid. All of my friends were too. I had long hair, a leather jacket, and a wallet (with no money in it) on a chain. I actually liked a bunch of Prince’s music. I just couldn’t let my friends know. Ha ha. They probably did the same thing. Now, when I hear one of his songs, it brings me right back to the early-mid 80’s.

I can count on one hand how many of his songs I like but I'm glad he was in this world, doing his thing. He made it a better place with his music. He was a beast on guitar and as a guitar player, I know that he could have abandoned his synths and pop persona to be known as one of the greatest blues or rock guitarists if he wanted to, but he followed his heart. Huge respect for that!

One of the funny things about Kiss being a #1 song is that it kept another great 80's song from that spot. Manic Monday performed by The Bangles but written by Prince was held at #2 by Kiss. I'm sure it's happened before, but I wonder how many artists have kept their own songs from hitting #1.

MTV was FORCED to play MJ... And his first video... was Billy Jean ! And Michael took over MTV as their number one Star !
Then MTV let Prince on... He dropped Little Red Corvette... And now 2 Black Artists were MTV's number one and number 2 Stars !
But MTV was straight up R@ycist in 1983... They said White people didn't want to see Black Artists !
David Bowie actually got MTV VJ Mark Goodman to say on camera... WHITE PEOPLE WOULD BE SCARED IF THEY SAW PRINCE ON THEIR TV !

Interestingly, none of the members of The Revolution were the best players he ever had at their instruments (to say that Sheila E was a MAJOR upgrade at set is an understatement and even she wasn't his best drummer), but they laid down the best groove of any group he had.
Fun fact about Kiss... Sheila E released a live video of herself on tour for her 2nd album, Romance 1600. At the end of the show, Prince and Revolution show up to join her on stage for an extended version of Love Bizarre. Video ends. What's not shown is that after that, Prince and Revolution, along with Sheila E, performed the live debut of Kiss.

I was fortunate enough to see Prince twice. One during the Purple Rain tour (with my sister and our best friend, who actually caught a rose from him during the song Purple Rain, she screamed with excitement all the way home)😆I was asked to write a concert review of the show for my schools newsletter… and then again many years later for the Musicology tour. No cameras were allowed but I attempted to get a few shots and security took my camera! I got it back after the show but the pics I took weren’t good 😕 Prince was likely an egotistical guy, but his talent and stage presence is undeniable! I’ll never get tired of any of his work; from first album to last. 💜

I was lucky to see the 3rd last concert he ever performed a week before his death . As a proof point to his talent he did the whole show 2 hours with just a piano. No drums , no bass, no back vocals and no guitar. Just him on a baby grand and believe it or not he rocked including using the audience clapping as the only percussion . Phenomenal! Last encore was Purple Rain with a wildly creatve piano solo where you were waiting for the widely lived guitar solo. So glad I was priviledged to see one of his very last performances.

So far I haven't heard anything PERSONALLY performed by Prince I just can't sit through BUTTT I can see the craftsmanship. I'll bet anything had he came out in the late 50's or 60's and was Pre- synth he would have done a bunch of stuff I could GROOVE TO! Peace All!! 🕊️☮️♾️😎

But this was another one of my favorite artists, and a story I had not heard or read before. It's impossible for me to disassociate "Kiss" from Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, singing along with it on her headphones and saying to Richard Gere, "Don't you just love Prince?" Nobody else, including the late, great Prince himself, can erase that scene from my memory, and I've even covered this song live with a couple of different ensembles.
I didn't know it when I was 4 years old and the *Purple Rain* soundtrack first came out, but the members of the Revolution definitely made their mark on me to almost the same degree as Prince himself. I've also come to recognize Lisa and Wendy as a kind of cultural template. When you listen to the songs that they performed on versus the ones that he did completely solo, you can tell how vital they had become to him then. Learning about the acrimony that developed between him and them two years later is precidented but still heartbreaking.

Wow a Mazarati menntion. I love this band. I picked up the vinyl when it first came out and have played it ever since. Besides their version of Kiss, they have 100 mph, Stroke and a number of other great songs off that debut album. I saw Mazarati in concert twice during the summer of '86 an dthey killed it every time.
I still remember the first show I saw where Brownmark played with them towards the end of the show, the stage riser gave way and Brownmark dropped through the hole but being as tall as he was it only came up to about his waist. Being the artist he is, Brownmark didn't stop playing he just stood there in that hole and continued to play for the rest of the song.
Prince was a musical genius and I have always loved his music ever since I first heard Little Red Corvette. I then went out and accumulated his entire (released) catalog including a copy of the EP for Purple Rain done in purple vinyl. 1984-85 in the twin cities was such a great time for music.

Like Sting, Prince out grew the need for bandmates. Steely Dan knew it from the start using session musicians. Prince revolutionized the production business also (another story). Not surprising he could write a hit in minutes. I can’t hear Kiss and not think of Julia Roberts. Gotta love Prince! Thanks Adam.

Sting and Prince outgrew the need for bandmates, but it's arguable whether their careers quite did.
It's sort of like Paul Stanley & Gene Simmons. With the exception of the "God Gave Rock & Roll to You" cover, Kiss (as a band and a brand) never charted well with original tracks after Vinnie Vincent left (with Carr passing away a few years later. Through marketing, fame, and revenue, Simmons and Stanley continued to prosper, but they never had another hit single (or album).
In terms of credits due, this is a big reason why I love Springsteen. He's great with the E Street Band, and apart. The work by "Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band" gets credited as such. Then when you listen to "Secret Garden" or "Devils and Dust", you know the songs are great but different from work with the E Street Band. Ask any average person born in the 80's or later if they've heard of "the Revolution" like they've heard of "the E Street Band".

I remember living in Kansas City in the early 1990’s. I picked up this girl I was seeing at the time, and I told her that the next song that would play on Q104 FM would be “Kiss” by Prince & the Revolution. Lo and behold, that song DID play next, and that gal was seriously impressed!
What she didn’t know, but I did, was that Q104 was changing call letters. They would refer to the new station as KISS FM. They decided to change to the new station over a 24-hour period, where they only played “Kiss” repetitively during that time. I’ll never forget the look on her face! I did forget her name, though.

Back in 1994, some of the World Cup games were played here in Michigan at the Pontiac Silverdome. Brazil was one of the teams competing. I was singing karaoke regularly every Monday at a hotel bar. That Monday during the World Cup, a group of Brazil soccer fans showed up at the bar. One of them, a short, beautiful woman got up and sang "Kiss." She was phenomenal. Coincidentally, I was up right after her and sang "Purple Rain." After I finished, I went over to the group and told her how impressed I was with her version of the song. She said, "Thank you. I really liked the way you sang 'Purple Rain.'" After a while, the group left. About twenty minutes later, one of the guys I used to work with came running into the bar, super excited. He yelled, "Sheila E is in the hotel!" Yep. She was the person who sang "Kiss." And I didn't know.

September 23, 1984, at Bogarts in Cincinnati, for $5, you could buy a ticket to see The Red White and Blue Tour. No one knew who that was. The lights went off and the smoke machine was cranked up. Those in the audience heard the words ‘dearly beloved…’ as Prince and his band launched into Let’s Go Crazy. Elvis Presley for his ability to touch on so many different area's and being the King of the Vegas stage show & Hollywood movies for at least 2 decades while completely mesmerizing the female population.

I remember seeing one season of American Idol's audition episodes, I found it funny, but also felt baffled as to the way people were trying to sing Prince's "Kiss" in the high singing notes as it was recorded on the album. Did these people not know it was done that high with an early form of auto tune? As if trying to imitate the vocal sound of a singer is going to get you a golden ticket to fame and success.
