As a teen in the 80s I just feel gratitude that we experienced this amazing era of music. The transition from 70s throughout the 80s and then into the 90s and the creation of grunge, dance, Britpop and so on...to live it in real time I can't even put it into coherent words how amazing and exciting it truly was.
Definitely true! I was a High School kid back then and the 80's is the best decade to be an adolescent or teenager. And that is not just because of the phenomenal music that we had but also because of the way we lived back then. There's something magical about that decade, something that makes living so exciting that I no longer feel today. During those years, there were parties and dancing everywhere. Today's youths in comparison look bored, irritated and disgusted about everything, which is probably the reason why there's a lot of violence and school shootings today. If only someone will invent the time machine and take today's kids back to the 80s, they probably would not want to go back to the present time.
I was 9 in 87. I was held back in first grade over my math grades and lack of motor skills so I was in third grade that fall. I switched schools over being held back in 2nd grade. I then moved in 5th grade. So was in three elementary schools. I recall the music of that era. Now over 40.
I was 16 in 1987 and I miss that music and those times. Recording my favourite songs off the radio (thank you Kasey Kasem), waiting for the new albums to be released, great rock concerts free of mobile phones, life was more optimistic and easier to navigate then. Kids are often so jaded now.
recording off radio meant nobody could talk or start a lawnmower. i have a lot of tapes with my budgie in the background include the cure "like cockatoos" from kiss me.
I recorded music off the radio long before I bought my first cassette, I still anticipate the next song from that tape when I hear those songs from all those years ago. Wish I could go back!
I was 15years old. What a great time to grow up. I'm in Australia. Life was much more " free" back then. Shame, I didn't realize how good I had it back then. But godamn do now !
Professor, for somebody who is so Knowledgeable and passionate about music, it is unfathomable that you only have 400,000 subscribers. Carry on marching forward to the 1 million mark
Well i literally just subbed after this video appeared in my "suggestions list". Must have been all that 80s/90s music i've been listening to lately. Going off now to binge watch every video. Thank you Professor.
@@mephistoxarses8585 Welcome! You’ll like it here! Patreon is actually pretty cool too! Professor has a lot of hidden gems, exclusives, behind the scenes! During Foo Fighters induction to the HOF this year…it was their drummer, Hawkins who demanded that George Michael be inducted as well. You know what? He’s right. There’s absolutely no denying his popularity and second to none vocal.
Prof, you are the most literate and gentlemanly YT host of them all. You speak English with correct grammar, which is so rare these days, even in written media with editorial staffs. And you don't swear. I am so tired of hearing f-bombs being dropped in every other sentence. You, sir, are extraordinary and I thank you.
Completely agree. Very professional and complimentary of every artist, even the ones that may not be his cup of tea. We would do well to emulate Adam's take on things!
Sadly, Top 40 went from being a chart, to being a SOUND. This really exploded when all of the labels sold to corporations in the 90s, and music people were replaced with numbers people. The tastemakers, the ones with their ears to the streets, development, that all went out the window. So what we have now, is number chasing from the accounting department. One label has success with an artist, and everyone runs out to find clones of said artist, and voila! Everything begins to sound alike. Everywhere. Do you think all of these country artists REALLY wanna be using programmed drums? Nope. But "it's working for everyone else", and we def dont wanna take a risk, so "make it sound a little more contemporary and pop". Every genre has gotten this memo. And now the Top 40 is a very limited sound. A stale one. And that wont be fixed unless music people get hired at labels again. And even then it's probably too late. \m/
@@DarknessFlameMedia now it's pushing the non stop faux quirky and relatable blonde in non stop dating mode or the girl who has one rare genetic gift or non stop rap and urban.
Exactly. And so many stories there are where the artist was turned away because record execs couldn't see a unique opportunity standing in front of them!
I think because streaming services today make and take most of the revenue. There just is not enough money in music for ordinary musicians thus the end up doing something else and we as humanity don't get to hear them.
Prof. '"I've been in love before" was underrated then and it continues even now. My No. 1 Cutting Crew song. It takes me to the golden olden times when music was limited but the quality was unlimited. Thank you for this time machine!
I discovered your channel just a few weeks ago. This is the first of your countdown videos I've watched. Like a lot of commenters, I'm an early 50s Gen-X-er and this stuff just takes me right back. Watching this particular video just put me right in front of my stereo in my bedroom in High School and listening to Casey Kasem. It's clear that he had an influence. I can hear his cadence in your voice, though you have your own spin on it. When you did the two dedications in this video, I darn near broke down. I was transported to my teenage years listening to the weekly countdown and Casey's regular dedications. Thanks for that!
1987 is personally one of my favorite years for '80s music. John Mellencamp also had an amazing album that year with the Lonesome Jubilee, which gave us the late-80s gems "Cherry Bomb" "Paper in Fire" and "Check It Out." An underrated album in my opinion.
I truly feel blessed to be Generation X and to have grown up in that era. Debbie Gibson is smoking hot. Sting is a living legend and Fields of Gold was a great album. A friend's mother dated George Michael before he made it big, she had pics of them together, loved his music. Billy Idol is still one of my favorite artists of all time. I really like his new work including his christmas album. i also remember watching the world premiere of Belinda Carlisle's video and Dirty Dancing was that movie you watched a couple times a week on VHS. All this time and I never new that True Faith was a New Order song, I just assumed it was The Pet Shop Boys because it sounded so similar. I recorded it off the radio and not once did a DJ ever reveal who sang that song. It really enraged me years later when I rediscovered a lot of 80's artists that never got the exposure they deserved.
I'm 48, but I've had to rediscover a lot of 80's artists, like Echo and the Bunnymen, Joy Division, and even The Cure as an adult. "Lovesong" was one of my favorite songs my junior year of high school, but my friends didn't listen to that kind of music, and so much of my time was spent listening to rap and R&B. I could've benefitted from growing up in a bigger, more diverse metro area (in ways not limited to music).
@@loki2240 Know how ya feel,I grew up in a small town in Ireland and just listened to the mainstream stuff and didnt catch on to The Smiths till 88-89 but got stick from friends for listening to "that depressing band",actually Smiths lyrics are hilarious. Wish i had had more open minded interesting friends to talk about different music with but hey thats boring small town life
I just can't put into words how impactful the 80's were. There just aren't enough adjectives to describe the feelings. All the 80's music touched me very deeply. I count myself very lucky to have been born in the 70's so I could be old enough to enjoy the best decade for music ever. I love this channel because you bring me back to happier times in my youth. Keep up the good work. Thank you.
I was a superfan of Kasey's Top 40. I started listening around 1971, when I was 12, on some AM station. Each Sunday, I'd turn it on at the beginning & write down the entire list. I'd be helping my mother with the Sunday dinner (I'm Southern, & down here, lunch was called dinner & dinner was called supper; I think the Brits still do it, & many Southerners are descended from the folks across the pond), but I'd have the kitchen radio tuned into the show, & I'd continue with that Sunday's list. I'd have my notebook next to me at the table while we were eating. I'd have it next to me as I was drying the dishes. Then, I'd go back in the living room where the stereo was, & finish it for the week. I kept each weekly list for the entire year, & I swear, I could just about get the top 5 of the year right - at least the top 2. Kasey Kasem was the greatest. He was a legend, & I'm sure he's rolling over in his grave today at the sad state our music is in today.
I was the same way and started in 1975!!! My parents did not like me wasting time writing down lists instead of school work, so I had to do it in a private spot and not let my siblings know what I was doing. I probably should have considered a career with Billboard!! 🤣 I would buy their year end issue and devour it for many hours. LOVED Casey and he actually read a question I sent in once!! Unfortunately, it was a very rare time I was not listening that week - a friend of a friend heard it and asked me if it was me! At the time, it seemed like I was the only one in the US following the weekly charts and documenting them Today, the whole Hot 100 is on RUclips (condensed with snippets of videos) so that you can follow and interact with other fans, which I still do. Wish they had this format years ago!!
@@timothybrown5999 I also did that!! My Top 10 was based upon records that I actually owned and played. Today, it is very common for music fans to have a "list". I still use itunes to tabulate my most played Top 25 on my iPod.
@@larrycj4382 I came upon some of my old lists the other day. For basically all of 1990 it was U Can’t Touch This and Poison by BBD battling for the top spot lol
How can somebody so knowledgeable and passionate about music with such journalistic integrity only have 400,000 subscribers??? Professor you’re amazing
I always loved his lyrics, “had a wife and kids in Baltimore Jack, I went out for a ride and I never came back “and the lessor known “fat man sitting on a little stool takes the money from my hand as his eyes take a walk all over you “ . lol The boss had the lyrics
In 1987 I was on an amateur hockey team and an argument erupted in the locker room over Debbie Gibson vs Tiffany. It must have made sense at the time. Haven't thought about that in 34 years.
Agreed. Im from the Prof's age group ('75) but beyond the most mainstream stuff music was never really my thing growing up so in part thanks to this channel I've discovered so much stuff that I missed out on....
That's what was great about the 80s, you could LOVE a song that only reached the top 30s or 20s more than the songs that were in the top 5! All great music though, we were spoilt in the 80s with great music. P.S. I also loved watching "Night Court", such a great feel good comedy :)
The problem with the 80s is that there was such a lot of good talent that just getting your song to the top 30 would be tantamount to getting a number one in the decades of the 90s and into the new century. Music is not what it used to be - where do you see people playing instruments nowadays. Most music as individual artists with a lot of background engineering.
I remember the whole Team Debbie vs Team Tiffany thing, but I never picked a side. I loved them both then and still do. Had huge crushes on both as well. In fact, in July 2019 I went to the NKOTB "Mixtape Tour" show in Charlotte, NC specifically to see Debbie and Tiffany perform. (It was a 50th birthday present) Both still sound incredible. Had the honor of meeting Debbie after the show, an opportunity I had been hoping for and wanting to happen for over 30 years. She is even more beautiful in person and incredibly sweet. Debbie and Tiffany are still making music, and Debbie released a new album titled "The Body Remembers" in August. Incredible album!
Hey mr gallo, does Tiffany have any strong feelings being classified as a one hit wonder? I mean in the same year, another 1987 cover charted on the hot 100 being Funkytown by Pseudo Echo.
@@Thomasmemoryscentral I don't know, but she wasn't a one hit wonder. "Could've Been" which is her second single off her debut album also went to #1. Plus "I Saw Him Standing There" (single 3 off her debut album) and "All This Time" off her second album were also top 10 hits.
Remember the whole team Madonna vs team Cyndi and then like Steve said Deb vs Tiffany? I admit i wasn't really into Deb or Tiffany(sorry guys) and Cyndi was more my style but loved Madonna too. I think we gotta give kudos to our generation. We could have liked one or the other. But we never canceled each other over it. These days though?
I graduated in 87 and I was such metal head that the top 40 didn’t mean much to me, but I still listened and liked some of those songs. It’s hard to not have memories to them. It’s great to see them again and I really like how you reran them and even add those songs that have done better since then.
True Faith by New Order is my favorite, Professor. Deserved to be number one, IMHO. I was team Debbie Gibson, her debut album was fire! I bought so many albums in 1987, so much great stuff came out. Thank you Professor for your amazing content!
Didn’t find “True Faith” until it was used in the trailer for Bright Lights, Big City (starring Michael J. Fox) in early ‘88. Have never tired of hearing this track ❤️
If I was interviewing Debbie Gibson my 15-year old self would need a moment to just geek out at her. I Get Lost in Your Eyes was hardly my favourite song (I'd just had an epiphany listening to the Back in Black album), but, my word, was she possibly the most beautiful vision on Saturday morning tv (Rage top 40, ABC) in early1989. Did I mention I was 15?
That is what I love about 80s music, the styles were so vastly different, there was something for everyone, and a lot of them were liked by almost everyone.
Pink Floyd's A Momentary Lapse of Reason is one of the most underrated albums of the 80's. Stands the test of time, and sounds great today. It's always been in rotation for me since 1987.
Team Debbie all the way. Brilliant Disguise is my favorite Springsteen song. Still rock out whenever I hear Should've Known Better or Heaven is a Place on Earth.
This is by far my favorite video you've ever made. As a 12 year old, I moved from California to Texas this exact week and music was a huge part of my life. This list just hits different, love it!
I would love to go back to 1987! My favorite is definitely Def Leppard's Hysteria album. Thanks for your videos. Great music, content & very interesting.
The fact that I was listening to Time of My Life this morning is crazy. As a kid, my neighbors and I did our own choreo to the new songs from the Dirty Dancing soundtrack (She's Like the Wind!) and performed it for the parents at one birthday party in particular. Good times lol. This vid brought back so many memories.
Also released in november 1987 was the Less Than Zero soundtrack with it's eclectic group of performers. The Bangles cover of Hazy Shade of Winter,, LL Cool J's Going Back to Cali, , Roy Orbison's Life Fades Away, co-written by Glenn Danzig of all people, and Slayer's cover of In a Gadda Da Vida. I played the cassette nonstop after getting it for christmas.
Best yet, Adam. I don't know how you do it. 1987 was one of the greatest years in pop music. I remember it well. I was a DJ on a commercial rock station , and I had a crush on both Debbie AND Tiffany , and the both STILL look fantastic today. What an incredible time for music. Thank you so very much !! , Dean.
It a about music not looks . Deb and Tiff ,teeny bopper music . Fluff . But...Whatever floats your boat . 1987 one of the best years in music if you were 13 yrs old . Lol
#6 - I discovered Bruce with 'Born in the USA'. At the time, although I enjoyed 'Tunnel of Love', it was a bit of a letdown for me as I was expecting another big rocker like 'USA'. But about 15 years ago, when I went through a divorce, I stumbled across 'Tunnel of Love' again and I heard it completely differently than I did as a 16 year old in the fall of 1987. The entire album spoke directly to me, but especially 'Brilliant Disguise'. It is by far my favorite Springsteen song, and every time I hear it now, it is like he is channeling my thoughts and feelings. Such a powerful song. As for the rest of the list, all I can say is amazing. So much fun to relive these great songs from my teenage years. Lastly...Debbie. Wow I had a crush on her. She is still as gorgeous as ever.
They just announced a deluxe version of Electric Youth. Look for the cd collection “we could be be together” it has all her albums, remixes etc. dvds of her videos and concerts. The set also has a book where Debbie tells the story behind all of the music, breaks down each album etc
Wonderful video and content Prof. Right around 1985 I started to listen to college radio and loved the alternative songs. I was not much of a fan of most of the top 10 radio hits at the time. I wasn't a even a fan of George Michael's solo stuff, but 'Faith' was an amazing song! Loved Billy Idol of course. Billy was amazing live and saw him twice.. The live in person version of 'Mony Mony' has some great colorful language call and response from the audience. The Go's Go's and Belinda were dreamy. So... The top 10 had some great stuff that still crept into my college age angst and independent mind.
I'd love to see you take the top 100 or top 50 of a year and re-rank them against each other. I think it would be an interesting thing to see, what songs had a long tail and what songs just basically disappeared into the annals of time.
Professor, your vid’s thumbnail really triggered my nostalgia, as I had several of those Memorex blank cassettes in the early 90s that I filled with the likes of Midnight Oil, The Cult, U2, and Smashing Pumpkins, to name a few. 😁
1987, started High School as a freshman that fall in a new state after moving. I loved all of these songs and still listen to most of them. Music was my peace and held me through until I made friends. I'm thankful for having grown up with such great music from the 70's and 80's and my now 17 year old daughter loves 80's music as well.
My late wife and I were together 31 years. Time of my life was our last dance. The movie was on tv and she ask me to dance with her. She died just over a month later.
I love the chart nerd stuff!! This was such a fantastic year for music. I love learning about songs outside the top 40 so I can discover hidden gems of the past. Hearing what was trending at a certain time period is so interesting to me.
I've been team Debbie since I first heard her voice in 1987!!! I love Tiffany's music as well, but Debbie is my gal! I'm super jealous that you got to meet her!!! I would love to see the whole interview. :)
@@alanvallazza9781 Yep, I have all of her CDs. My favorite is 1995's "Think With Your Heart." She did have hits in 1989. "Lost In Your Eyes" was her biggest hit. She had a couple more in 1989. In 1993, "Losin' Myself" peaked at #86. That was after she already had a bunch of flops. She recently hit the top 5 on the dance chart with "Girls Night Out."
@ProfessorOfRock I LOVE the idea of adjusting the top 5 or 10 with the system you have! This is what I thought about from your "#1 in our Hearts " series. I find it fascinating which artists & songs have longevity compared to what was hot at the time. Please make this a permanent thing going forward. Or you can create a new series such as chart topper vs streaming or some other name which you are awesome at doing. Thank you for being so knowledgeable and thoughtful. Your voice along with your incredible passion make for highlights of my day. From one music lover to another. God bless Rob
The 80s truly had the best music. It breaks my heart what kids today have to grow up with. (Though to this day, I still don't like Shake Your Love lol. Love Debbie though! Got to see her in concert with NKOTB, Tiffany, Salt n Pepa and Naughty By Nature in 2019!!)
Great countdown. For me, 1987 was the last great year in music. I thought that 1988 and 1989 were good but I could see that sounds that I didn't like started gaining momentum. When those 3 genres (Rap, Grunge, and alternative) exploded into the mainstream during the early 1990s, I was done following current music. Anyway, I loved every song on this countdown. Debbie Gibson and Tiffany had a friendly rivalry but the fans had to pick sides as to who they liked better. While I did like Tiffany, I was partial to Debbie Gibson. She was the youngest artist to ever write, produce, and record a number one hit (Foolish Beat). I always referred to her as the teen queen of the 1980s. Her popularity during the late 1980s was equivalent to the teen queen of the 1960s Lesley Gore. Professor, I really hope to hear more of your interview with Debbie.
@@TheRetroManRandySavage Very true. In those 2 years, while there was still enough good music to keep me interested, I could tell that major changes were about to take place and I didn't like at all where the final destination went to in the early 90s. That's why I still maintain that the 80s was the last great music decade.
I absolutely LOVE these shows Adam! It does bring me back to Kasey's days of doing the tops and your interviews and viewer comments make these all special. Even though I grew up in the 70s and I graduated from high school in 1981, the 80s is the decade that was always special to me. I was in college then getting both my broadcasting and journalism degrees, it's where I met my future wife and when we got married.
This list just reminds my 19 year-old hard-rockin' self (at the time) why I was (and, hell, still am) so alienated from pop music. Still don't have any of these artists in my library (except Bruce Springsteen), just lived on classic rock and metal (and yes I was a total metal snob, no glam!). I think my favorite album from that year was Alice Cooper's "Raise Your Fist and Yell," although stuff like G'n'R's "Appetite" and U2's "Joshua Tree" would eventually grab me later.
I sincerely mean this, the POR is the best music/entertainment video program on the Internet. I love everyone of the episodes. It takes everything in my body, not to Bing watch these videos all day! Casey Kasem would be so proud of what you've created. I'm surprised a network hasnt come to you asking to put this on TV at least 1x or 2x a week for an hour. It would be great watching!
What an awesome produced show! I was a fan of Dick Clark and Casey Casem countdowns in the 90s. I listened religiously every Sunday morning from 8am to 12pm here in California on my local radio station. Your channel is an homage to both of the legends. The most surprising nugget of trivia I learned was your clip from interviewing Tommy James. I always wondered what he thought of Tiffany's version of his song. Now I know! What a mutual respect between the two! Tiffany did make history of becoming the youngest female artist to have a #1 album (I could be mistaken but if anyone knows trivia Professor of Rock does!). I always loved "Could've Been," Tiffany's follow up #1 Billboard hit. Such a beautiful song...
Impressed more with Debbie since she wrote her own songs. Brilliant Disguise still on my playlist. Think Father Figure is George's best. So impressed when you do a list and have so many interviews of the artists.
Tiffany wasn't given the option to write her own songs from what I've heard. She writes her own music now. Tiffany has a much better voice too. What bothers me about Debbie is that she now insists on being called Debra. Ugh. Give me a break
They're ALL great songs but these are my top 5 1) (I Just) Died in your Arms Tonight - Cutting Crew 2) Just Like Heaven - The Cure 3) I Think we're Alone Now - Tiffany (It was tough one between Tiff & Deb but I had a huge crush on Tiffany) 4) Faith - George Michael 5) Mony Mony - Billy Idol
Professor, you answered your own question in the title of this vid. 'RAD' is an indicator of criminality, corruption, deterioration, and demise...which is precisely what has happened to the music industry, from Gen X onwards...
You sir, have my dream job .Your passion and diligence is palatable .My go to every morning ,love your break downs .Especially the Redux segments . Just a side note , your video on (Girl don't go away ,The Crue) which I'll keep PG is a saying from the street ,late 70's early 80's ( Don't f__k off mad, just f__k off ).
I was lucky to be stuck in my childhood 70s, 80s and 90s. Born In 78, the first two years dipped into the 70s, bulk of my childhood was 80s and 90s. 18 in 1996. But held back in 1st grade I turned 19 two months before hs graduation. 9 in 1987.
Another awesome video!!!!! Can't get enough of the 80's nostalgia! Keep up the great work. You're so right about the music today nose diving lately....
Seeing Tiffany just reminded me of "She's a beauty "by the Tubes. She's one in a million.Don't fall in love,'cause if you do then you'll find out she don't love you. I was 17 in 1987...good memories from just before I had to adult.😀🤘👍✌
Oh wow. “Hourglass” is SUCH a good song and I feel bad that I haven’t thought about it in YEARS. That chorus and music video were quite amusing to and 8-year-old me. But after listening to it again, it’s actually a really great song - pretty emblematic of this period of the 80’s where we were out of the New-Wave and Rockabilly Revival but elements of that still snuck into songs. Like this one and 1988’s “Wild Wild West” by Escape Club - which also had a truly absurd music video…
Happy (Black) Friday, Professor! What a week for music this was -always loved I've Been In Love Before and am a lifelong fan of Sting! That video of We'll Be Together was one of my favorites as a kid because I loved the play between "geeky" Sting, drunk Sting, and his wife in it and the Paula Abdul choreography! Thanks as always 🙏
I’d love to see Professor of Rock do 1985. Specifically, Scritti Politti “Perfect Way” & Level 42 “Something About You”. My heart melts whenever I hear those OG songs…
Ideally , Both The Cure & New Order would have cracked the Top 10 but they did dent the charts & set the table for others like Depeche Mode & The Church to receive mainstream radio play.
Oh man, Thanks so much for this #ProfessorOfRock ! This post just brought so many beautiful, even painfully, nostalgic tunes back from the year i just turned 17! Over here in Europe we were all about the "Gods of War" and "Animal" by *DefLeppard* Of course! 😎
I have such a deep appreciation for music and I appreciate your channel so much. Very informative and fun ☺️ I love how movies and shows at the time are mentioned as well to get us into the aura of it all.
Thats actually a lot more the case today because it's more about the money and not about creative freedom. Still the 80's was the golden age of music with so many hits, it progressively started to get worse in the 90's to what we have today, at least in the charts, because like you said, there is a lot of good music around but you have to go out of your way to find them as most are not in the charts.
@@paul1979uk2000 honestly I think there's much more artistic freedom today as you don't need a contract with a publisher or even a manager, you can just make your music how you want to and put it out there, having to search for the good stuff seems fine to me
@@xmathmanx That's true, the problem is with getting your song heard which is a lot harder to do if you don't have the money behind you, we see the same thing with gaming, publishers hold a lot of the money which makes it harder for independent studios to get noticed, I suspect it's the case for movies as well. It's a shame really because the independent movement have a lot more creative freedom to try new things out and it's usually that what changes the world for the better whereas the system likes to play it safe, rinsing and repeating the same stuff over and over again whiles taking far fewer risks.
Love your channel and the content! I am a graduate from the 1980’s and still love all the music. Have you ever done a show on The J Geils Band? Would love to learn more about them too! Thanks again!
Ha! Glad you referenced the SNL sketch. As soon as George Michael shook his booty in the clip on this video, I immediately blurted out, "Look at my butt, Dennis! It's perfect!" :D
On a side note, around this time in 1987 one of my favorite Christmas albums of all time came out. A Very Special Christmas Vol. 1, which had amazing holiday tunes from Whitney Houston, Madonna, John Mellencamp, Sting, U2, Bon Jovi, and many others.
Heaven is a place on earth is so sentimental to me because I was taking night classes and I would stop by my Grandpa's house to spend a couple hours with him between work and school. I had this cassette in my car which I played constantly. Everytime I hear Heaven on Earth I'm reminded of spending that special time with him during his final years on earth.
Had such a crush on Debbie Gibson! What a year 1987! Love this video! “Faith” was unlike any single on the radio. George had such a great voice. Love the live version of Mony Mony more than his early 80s studio version! Icehouse “Crazy” should have been a number 1 single in 1987!!
Some of the Big Chart Songs in Australia 1987 check them out : La Bamba -Los Lobos Electric Blue -Icehouse Too much aint enough love - Jimmy Barnes He's gonna step on you again -Party Boys ( brother to Jimmy Barnes ) Slice of Heaven -Dave Dobbyn Funky Town - Pseudo echo
1987 may be my favorite year of music ever. Guns N Roses - Appetite for Destruction INXS - Kick U2 - Joshua Tree Def Leppard - Hysteria Whitesnake S/T Dokken - Back for the Attack Frehley’s Comet Aerosmith - Permanent Vacation Motley - Girls George Michael - Faith. Some awesome album releases that year! And this top 10 song list in this clip are some great contemporary classics sad well…Belinda Carlise, George Michael, Tiffany and Debbie. Good times.
OMG!! What a list!!! Full of crushes!! LOL!! I was team Tifanny, I had a huge crush on her. Just loved how she danced and how her voice sounded. But now I like Debbie better, her music, I mean. It's almost certain that I include one of her songs in every mix i do. I must confess that my first ever (and probably the only one) man crush was George Michael. Oh man!! I so wanted to be him. Every girl was crazy for him. He was the first one with the days old beard. His hair was always perfect, the sunglasses! and I got my first denim jacket and boots because of him. Unfortunately my beard growth like policemen in NY, one in each corner. So growing a beard for 2 or 3 days was out of the question. I looked so funny. Also, I think he did the gratest video of all time; Freedom 90. Such a master piece. ART in all the extension. And not talking about the super models, well, yes, but much more than that. the cinematography, the light, the camera movements, the inuendos, wow!! PERFECT. And of course it is, it was made by no other than David Fincher. George Michael was in my bucket list. One of my all time favorite singers. I loved all his music. Too bad I couldn't check that from my list. And.... saving the best for last... Belinda. My all time major crush. I loved her since the Go-Gos. Her voice had something that attracted me instantly and enjoyed watching their videos, playing their music and dancing it a lot. Then she went solo. I remember the first time I saw her video I wasn't paying attention to the TV. MTV was on the background while I was doing a team homework. There were, I think, 2 or 3 friends from school with me and we were trying to finish the project. Then I heard the voice and I knew it was her. I ran back to my room (we were at the dinner table since we needed a large surface to work on) and I saw her. I felt in love right there. She has been my favorite singer ever since. I truly believe she is the most beautiful woman in history of humanity. And what makes her perfect is not only her looks (just look at her!!!) but the fact that she sings and has a very unique sound. Her music has a power over me. I get transported back to the 80's for a milisecond almost every time I listen her songs. You know how? I'm sure all of you have had that experience. It happens not only with Belinda. It has happened many times with random songs from the 80's. But with her songs is almost sure that it happens. Por a milisecond you're there, wherever you were in an exact point of the 80's when you were listening the same song. You see, smell, feel and hear everything. Just like traveling in time. It's just an instant but is a sensation I love when it happens. In fact, I have given my wife and close friends instructions that, if I ever get Alzheimer or something like that, to play me 80's music, specially Belinda Carlslile's songs. That much I kove her. My dream has been to see her live in a concert. It was sad because I kept seeing concert tours everywhere but Mexico. And when she was in the US I couldn't travel for one reason or another. She moved to France and then to Asia. So my hopes were smallest every time. I follow her in Instragram. Not that kind of fan/stalker. I almost never commented on her posts. Just liked them. One day, recently, she post a photo and before reading the caption I recognize the place. And not just that, it was a place I was earlier the very same day!!! I went bonkers!! But, it didn't stopped there. She kept posting photos of places I either was earlier the same day or one or 2 days before.!!!! Turns out, she came to Mexico city. Literally, I couldn't sleep my 7-8 hours. Every day, while I was walking to and from a gig (I'ma photogapher) I kept my eyes open in case I ran into her. Then, she post on her story that there was going to be an FREE acoustic concert with A SURPRISE very close to home. I couldn't sleep at all the day before. I went there early. I want to be the first one and be on first row. As I got to the place, I see her having lunch in a small restaurant just outside the place. My heart skipped a beat, or two. I felt like a teen girl runing into BTS. But I played cool, left her, her space and just waited for the thing to happen. It was a very, very small place. I was less than 6 feet from her. As her song says, I got week. The first song wasn't hers. It was the band's that she was with, so she only sang choruses. The second she started to sing I got goosebumps, every single hair on my body raised and almost cried. Yes.... I'm 55 BTW My wife was there with me and she laughed when, in between songs, I shouted "I love you" o Belinda, LOL. My all time favorite singer. My all time biggest crush. Right there, at arm's lenght. Singing 2 of the Go-Gos songs. In a city in the other side of the world where she was living, very close to home. What were the odds, what were the odds. Sorry for the lenght. I had to. =) Thank you for everything. Your channel is my favorite
Back in late 90’s, early 2k’s, AcidPlanet would have remix contests. I remixed “Heaven is a Place on Earth” that hit #1 in the pop charts. One of my favorite memories. Man, I miss AcidPlanet. I did a video about it on my channel because it meant so much and I found the remix tucked away on an old CD that I had made.
The year I graduated high school! Now, I do want to say as far as so many people saying music was once great but it sucks currently, y'all aren't looking in the right places. We have the internet now and believe it or not, there's some stellar stuff out there RIGHT NOW. It's just not played on the radio and isn't in popular rotations...but yeah...Denmark, Pakistan, Germany and Mexico have (imo) the best of rock now. We have bands here as well that aren't signed to record labels. Look for them and support them...as fans and consumers, we need to start shutting down the crooked producers and record labels. We should do it for Pete Ham if for nothing else...
I agree, and two LEAP to mind - both from Japan and both all-female: Fantastic Heavy Metal band, Lovebites. And what I consider the best overall band out right now anywhere, Band-Maid. (As soon as you look them up, you will probably experience "the gap" and it's intentional. What you see is NOT what you get :) )
For over 25 years now, an entire generation of youth have grown up without hearing or knowing music made by real instrument musicians and truly creative musical minds. And it's not going to change anytime soon as each generation gets lazier, less instrumental, and less creative thinkers.
1. Where The Streets Have No Name - U2 The Joshua Tree 2. Welcome To The Jungle - Guns N'Roses Appetite For Destruction 3. Endless Summer Nights - Richard Marx Richard Marx
From the list. Faith is the best, hands down. Amazing album!! Bests albums of the year: Clutching at Straws, Marillion The Joshua Tree, U2 Faith, George Michael Diesel and Dust, Midnight Oil A Momentary Lapse of Reason, Pink Floyd Best songs come from those albums for sure!
This was a great time machine video of the past. I was in the Army stationed in Germany at the time. A lot of the songs weren't as popular it in Europe from what I can remember. Some of my all-time favorites back then were INXS, U2, Prince, George Michael, and not forget Rick Astley with the iconic Never Gonna Give You Up. It seemed like discos were really popular over there. It's really hard watching your videos because they bring back so many memories plus how old I am getting. Another great video. Thank you.
Im an ‘85 baby and am so Grateful for the pocket or bracket of time that I was born. I got to enjoy an analog to digital paradigm straddling shift generation, there needs to be a new a name for the generation born in 80-88 my coming of age in the late 80s 90s early 00s and all of this, rock on brothers and sisters, peace and love! Were the last gen that saw and knew life before what it is now , social media hellscape.
1987 was a killer year for album releases! It was the year I started high school, so it was a pivotal year for me. My top 3 back then were Big Blue Sky by The Northern Pikes (if you haven’t heard Teenland then you’re in for a treat), Diesel & Dust by Midnight Oil, and Kick by INXS.
@Adam Martin do you remember this on hit wonder Device with Paul Engermann on lead vocals and singer and song writer Holly Knight on backing vocals? Here's the video ruclips.net/video/oKvFPoPfcRE/видео.html
I have just found out this channel, the Professor is amazing! Great to see all this music from my childhood ❤️ you have my thumbs up Professor, keep up with good work!
Didn't like year 1987 much, the overproduced pap was killing me.. but there were still great artists and songs around for sure. 87 is probably the very last relevant year in modern pop culture ever :p
I was more a fan of Debbie Gibson back in the day, although my favorite songs of hers weren't released until 1989. That said, I followed Tiffany's career more closely over the years, especially in the last few years since a friend of mine had an opportunity to interview her on his radio station. It was a great interview and I really have enjoyed listening to some of her more recent songs. She's a really great artist.
I just got out of high school and was trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. At this time I was heavily into country, classic rock, and some of the milder hair bands. This was the era radio began “narrowcasting” in major markets. No longer would it be common to hear Pink Floyd along with Debbie Gibson on Top 40 radio. In smaller markets this type of programming was more common. An era of change.
Top 3 albums: 1. Strangeways, Here We Come - The Smiths 2. The Joshua Tree - U2 3. Depeche Mode - Music for the Masses Top 3 songs: 1. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - U2 2. Brilliant Disguise - Bruce Springsteen 3. Touch of Grey - The Grateful Dead

As a 50 year old Gen-X lump of coal - listening to Prof of Rock, is like talking with an old buddy you haven’t seen in a few years. great stuff
That is exactly it..it’s like the buddy that you’ve never met 👍🏽
Totally!
I turned 50 this year too. I love Professor of Rock 🤘🏼
I feel exactly the same, the professor is amazing and has a spirit I connect too naturally!
Don't stop there! Get the Benny Hill boxed set! And maybe Doctor Who Tom Baker years on Blu Ray!
True ,I'm 60 and lived it all ,60,s to 90,s ..i was in my 30,s for the rave scene too ,all different ,but all good times
I feel absolutely lucky to grow up during this time. What a fun decade!
An 80’s song ranking in the 30’s would blow today’s #1 song out of the water! No doubt about it! Music has regressed so much it’s not even funny!
@gerrycrisostomo6571 I agree! I'm so grateful to have experienced growing up in the 80s!
I was a baby and a small child in the 1980s. Yet, the older I get, the more I appreciate the music from that decade.
Thank you, brother Adam!
I was 9 in 87. I was held back in first grade over my math grades and lack of motor skills so I was in third grade that fall. I switched schools over being held back in 2nd grade. I then moved in 5th grade. So was in three elementary schools. I recall the music of that
era. Now over 40.
Same here. I was born in 80 and and fell in love with 80s rock in the early 90s.
Exactly and I am still hunting for 80's music I'd like now.
I was 10 and I was listening to all those songs all the time back then
I recorded music off the radio long before I bought my first cassette, I still anticipate the next song from that tape when I hear those songs from all those years ago. Wish I could go back!
I was 23, but I get it. Those times are gone forever.
Will do.
I agree. I've been sharing links to the Professor's channel with every music lover I know. Def deserves a million plus subscibers.
He’ll get there!
Well i literally just subbed after this video appeared in my "suggestions list". Must have been all that 80s/90s music i've been listening to lately. Going off now to binge watch every video.
Thank you Professor.

During Foo Fighters induction to the HOF this year…it was their drummer, Hawkins who demanded that George Michael be inducted as well. You know what? He’s right. There’s absolutely no denying his popularity and second to none vocal.
One More Time has really aged the most gracefully IMO.
GM did way more than just sing. He was a phenomenal writer as well
I agree with Taylor. George should definitely have see the hall just a shame he couldn't be here for his induction.
What about Duran Duran?
@@mikeredfield8771 yeah, they definitely have had plenty of success, it would seem appropriate in my mind. I'm a fan
Bravo! Well said. Thanks for keeping it clean. I can share it with my students.
Could not agree more, the Professor brings a level of professionalism to YT other channels would do well to learn from. Excellent and quality content.
Yes the professor of rock is a one of a kind respectable teacher.❤❤❤
So true!
I've always liked that song, even back then. 👍
Same here. It’s a beautiful song.
There will never be anyone like Casey again 😎
I discovered the channel yesterday, December 27th, 2022
1987 is personally one of my favorite years for '80s music. John Mellencamp also had an amazing album that year with the Lonesome Jubilee, which gave us the late-80s gems "Cherry Bomb" "Paper in Fire" and "Check It Out." An underrated album in my opinion.
Yes! JCM is an American classic 🇺🇸
Check It Out is a great underplayed song from him
Agreed !
Me to I’m an ‘81 baby
Sting is a narcissist a hole.
Wish i had had more open minded interesting friends to talk about different music with but hey thats boring small town life
Dj,s really sucked!!!☹️☹️👎
I began listening when Shadoe Stevens took over. But I became a fan of Kasey when he returned.
Kasey’s Top 40 was the best, I also listened every Sunday and started making my own Top 10 list from my favorite songs each week.

I think The Boss should've had a few weeks at #1 with "Brilliant Disguise". Such a heart-wrenching song.
I always loved his lyrics, “had a wife and kids in Baltimore Jack, I went out for a ride and I never came back “and the lessor known “fat man sitting on a little stool takes the money from my hand as his eyes take a walk all over you “ . lol
The boss had the lyrics
In 1987 I was on an amateur hockey team and an argument erupted in the locker room over Debbie Gibson vs Tiffany. It must have made sense at the time. Haven't thought about that in 34 years.
Can we all just take a moment to reflect on how influential Tommy James was/is? I didn't come to appreciate him until years after The Shondells era.
This guy is good. Appreciate the videos and glad I found him.

@@sbuysgm not much different than it’s ever been.
@@Thomasmemoryscentral she had 4? Debbie definitely had more longevity in terms of albums with more singles.
Thanks for sharing! 87 was a grand year!
I liked it too.
Love it!
The 2019 remaster is really good.
Dozed off many a nights with that in the cd player and Sony mdr V6’s still on only to be jarred awake about 25 seconds into One Slip…
Learning to Fly is an amazing song. I love that whole album.
Pyromania was their last great album, but then I liked them better as a rock band.
Yeah, Def Leppard was amazing.
I still play " Hysteria" on my guitar now.
And " Tonight" from their following Album.
Hysteria didn’t come out till late oct 1987 so most of the hits were in 1988. Fantastic album
@@remoevans7847 One of the few 10/10 albums ever
Congratulations on 400K Professor.. Rock On 🤘
Thanks a million!
A millions subs just around the corner!!!
Great soundtrack. Might have been the first non-Disney movie soundtrack that I ever owned.
Lol
Team Debbie mostly because she wrote most of her music. Love Will Find A Way and Just Like Heaven are better songs than half of this top ten.
Yes, the power of time and perspective is powerful when it comes to music. I feel lucky to have experienced so many of these songs 'at the right age'.
I love Debbie. She also released a 3CD+1DVD deluxe edition of her debut album Out of the Blue this year!! ❤
They just announced a deluxe version of Electric Youth. Look for the cd collection “we could be be together” it has all her albums, remixes etc. dvds of her videos and concerts. The set also has a book where Debbie tells the story behind all of the music, breaks down each album etc
At age 15, I have grown up with rock music and really appreciate your channel. I wish the oldies could get more respect these days. Love your videos!
I second the motion. New Year's would be a great time to kick it off! 1984 please for the first one.
Professor, your vid’s thumbnail really triggered my nostalgia, as I had several of those Memorex blank cassettes in the early 90s that I filled with the likes of Midnight Oil, The Cult, U2, and Smashing Pumpkins, to name a few. 😁
Same😂
1987, started High School as a freshman that fall in a new state after moving.
So sorry for your loss. I pray you now have some peace since dealing with your wife's death.
Brilliant Disguise is not only one of the best songs of 1987, but one of the best songs in the past 40 years.
I love the chart nerd stuff!! This was such a fantastic year for music. I love learning about songs outside the top 40 so I can discover hidden gems of the past. Hearing what was trending at a certain time period is so interesting to me.
I LOVED both Tiffany and Debbi Gibson and Def Leppard to.LOL My music taste are all over :P.I love how you rate them now with streams
I've been team Debbie since I first heard her voice in 1987!!! I love Tiffany's music as well, but Debbie is my gal! I'm super jealous that you got to meet her!!! I would love to see the whole interview. :)
She had many records but no more hits after 1987-88.
U mean debbie deb
Peter Gabriel “so” was awesome. Possibly best album of the year. Very cool. Certainly better than paul Simon Graceland .
As a person who edits video I can tell you how much effort you put into your videos is amazing
God bless
Rob
The 80s truly had the best music. It breaks my heart what kids today have to grow up with. (Though to this day, I still don't like Shake Your Love lol. Love Debbie though! Got to see her in concert with NKOTB, Tiffany, Salt n Pepa and Naughty By Nature in 2019!!)
Is this Dinara Safina, the world class WTA tennis player?!
Haha, no, but thank you for knowing her! Most don't. She was my favorite player.
Shake Your Love was and still is a great song
Never would have expected to get misty eyed watching a PoR video. Thanks for sharing that heartfelt story.
Def leppard and motley crue were still huge in 88 n 89. But I agree, the landscape was definitely changing.
@@TheRetroManRandySavage Very true. In those 2 years, while there was still enough good music to keep me interested, I could tell that major changes were about to take place and I didn't like at all where the final destination went to in the early 90s. That's why I still maintain that the 80s was the last great music decade.
Don't forget that Tears for Fears, Seeds of Love came in 1989. I consider that to be easily one of the greatest albums of the decade.
It was never about picking Debbie or Tiffany, it was about both. ;)
Agree, Father Figure is great; doesn't get the play time it should.
Tiffany wasn't given the option to write her own songs from what I've heard. She writes her own music now. Tiffany has a much better voice too. What bothers me about Debbie is that she now insists on being called Debra. Ugh. Give me a break
They're ALL great songs but these are my top 5
1) (I Just) Died in your Arms Tonight - Cutting Crew
2) Just Like Heaven - The Cure
3) I Think we're Alone Now - Tiffany (It was tough one between Tiff & Deb but I had a huge crush on Tiffany)
4) Faith - George Michael
5) Mony Mony - Billy Idol
Professor, you answered your own question in the title of this vid. 'RAD' is an indicator of criminality, corruption, deterioration, and demise...which is precisely what has happened to the music industry, from Gen X onwards...
Perfectly put! Though it always was a scheme machine, it completely melted down after MTV.
Not just music but society in general
You sir, have my dream job .Your passion and diligence is palatable .My go to every morning ,love your break downs .Especially the Redux segments .
Just a side note , your video on (Girl don't go away ,The Crue) which I'll keep PG is a saying from the street ,late 70's early 80's ( Don't f__k off mad, just f__k off ).
I absolutely love this channel and your work. I graduated HS in 1987 and love these videos!
Wow, thank you!
Surprisingly, "Hourglass" was Squeeze's highest charting single. One would've thought it would be "Tempted".
Same! I like the version that Clapton played on.
You're exactly right. The Cure would hit #2 just a few year later too.
Oh man,
Thanks so much for this #ProfessorOfRock !
This post just brought so many beautiful, even painfully, nostalgic tunes back from the year i just turned 17!
Over here in Europe we were all about the "Gods of War" and "Animal" by *DefLeppard*
Of course! 😎
Awe, 7th grade for me and right when I was discovering my own voice and breaking free of my parent’s music. I listened and loved everyone of these.
Same here! Wasa great awakening
I have such a deep appreciation for music and I appreciate your channel so much. Very informative and fun ☺️ I love how movies and shows at the time are mentioned as well to get us into the aura of it all.
The best music is often not even in the charts, this has always been the case.
Check out a hidden gem which was part of a team debate: Christian vs. secular. The song: Honestly by Stryper.
Love your channel and the content! I am a graduate from the 1980’s and still love all the music. Have you ever done a show on The J Geils Band? Would love to learn more about them too! Thanks again!
Can you give a link to your interview with Debbie? Thanks

U2 - Joshua Tree
Def Leppard - Hysteria

Yes.... I'm 55 BTW
My wife was there with me and she laughed when, in between songs, I shouted "I love you" o Belinda, LOL.
My all time favorite singer. My all time biggest crush. Right there, at arm's lenght. Singing 2 of the Go-Gos songs. In a city in the other side of the world where she was living, very close to home.
What were the odds, what were the odds.
Sorry for the lenght. I had to. =)
Thank you for everything. Your channel is my favorite
This made me so happy for you. How wonderful when a dream can come true like that.
@@Begining2013 thank you! It literally was a dream come true 😁

3. Endless Summer Nights -

Joan Jett kicked off the 80's Tommy James rediscovery with her great cover of _Crimson And Clover_ years earlier.
From the list. Faith is the best, hands down. Amazing album!!
Bests albums of the year:
Clutching at Straws, Marillion
The Joshua Tree, U2
Faith, George Michael
Diesel and Dust, Midnight Oil
A Momentary Lapse of Reason, Pink Floyd
Best songs come from those albums for sure!
@@SuperMarioBrosIII I haven’t heard that before, but that video certainly looks like 1987. They look like vampires from The Lost Boys!
New Order's "True Faith" has to be the most UNDERRATED Pop Dance tune of ALL TIME. Loved that song...
Top 3 albums:
1. Strangeways, Here We Come - The Smiths
