I met Freddy back when he was in the group Alias. I was interning at a radio station in Birmingham Alabama and a private concert was the prize. It was for all the high schools in the area to try to win a can food drive. The winner got the private concert for that school at a club. I got to go because of my internship and I got to go early and hang out with the DJs and the band. Freddy and the band couldn’t have been nicer and hearing him sing live was amazing! They sang several songs that were Alias songs, but he also sang When I’m With You by Sheriff too. He sounded beautiful even singing live, the notes he held were stunning!! I literally had chills while he was singing.
I love this guy’s voice! Remember Sheriff but especially remember ‘I need you now’ - (More than words can say) - that guy’s voice is amazing! I love it!
I have heard of both bands Sheriff and Alias and heard both songs on the radio many times over the years as power ballads, I'm really enjoying the music and listening to your great history of Rock n Roll Professor Thank You and have an amazing Thanksgiving.🎶🎤🎸🎸🎹🥁🎶
I had the 45 for "When I'm With You." I played it one time when my grandma was over, and she said "That woman held that note for a long time!" I said "It's a man." She replied, "Oh, that man." 😅👍
It's not THAT high: he's still not quite Dream On era Steven Tyler. Or Steelheart. But I guess there are phrases that sound like they are from an alto rocker's register. I always assumed that last note was dubbed a la Shannon Hoon...
@@josephfisher426 I don't think it's the note. It's the timber. You can totally tell it's a guy in both "Dream On" and "I'll Never Let You Go (Angel Eyes)." The way he holds the note, I could see someone who doesn't know the son g thinking it's a woman.

@@ProfessorofRockI never knew the artist or the title. But I remembered that I loved that chorus of that great song. After all those decades, now I know.
"When I'm With You" had its resurrection during my senior year of high school. I remember LOVING the song (I still do) but I didn't know anything about the group who sang it. There was no video on MTV, they weren't on any variety shows, and we didn't have Internet back them to find out about them. They remained a mystery--but the song was solid gold.
That song ("More Than I Can Say") was written and first recorded by Sonny Curtis and Jerry Allison of The Crickets shortly after Buddy Holly's tragic death. In 1961, it became a minor hit for Bobby Vee (who was the fill-in for Buddy Holly the next night after the plane crash that took Buddy Holly's life). I wonder if The Professor doesn't like Leo Sayer at all or just doesn't like that song covered by Leo Sayer.

As an young Canadian lad back in '83 I remember Sheriff's "When I'm with you" song vividly. Huge runaway hit up here in the Frozen North! Freddie has a great voice, can't deny that man's talent. Great video. As a Canadian, I remember the hits from Sheriff and Alias well, but also Frozen Ghost. I fondly remember seeing Frozen Ghost live at Barn 22 in Grayson, Saskatchewan (a very small town), which hosted many bands from the 80's on their way through to play in Regina, SK. Most memorable at Barn 22 was Glass Tiger opening up for Tom Cochrane and Red Rider when "Thin Red Line" was at the top of the Canadian charts.
WHEN I'M WITH YOU!! I forgot about this song. I want to say when it came out I thought it was The Babys with John Waite! Awesome! Great Job Adam! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎🤟🏼🎸
Sheriff was one of my favourite club bands back in the day. Not only did they have that hit single, they were an awesome cover band too. Saw them live several times. More than words was incidentally the song my Ex and I picked for our wedding in 1991.
Ok, go back to 1982-83, I'm the Music Director and DJ and my college's Radio station. On Fridays, we had a show called "Nu Vinyl", which ran from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm, in which we played only music that had been recently released. When the Sheriff album arrived, as was customary at the time, the record label provided multiple copies: 1 for the Radio Station, 1 for the Music Director, and frequently additional copies to give away as promotional material. I played the Sheriff album for about 3 weeks on "Nu Vinyl", and the only reaction was dislike. It bombed on "Nu Vinyl", and we took it out of rotation for the rock shows. However, I had kept the Music Director copy, even after I graduated and moved on in my life. Long story short - Fast forward to 1989, and the woman I was dating at the time kept raving about the song "When I'm With You". Apparently Top 40 radio stations were playing the song, but not AOR/Rock stations. As her birthday was fast approaching, I went to every record store in the NYC area trying to find the single/album. Nobody had it, and most record stores never even heard of the song. After a frustrating week of trying to find the single/album anywhere - a distant memory triggered in my mind. Sheriff.... why does that name sound familiar. I began looking through my record collection (1,000's of albums), and there it was - the Music Director's copy I received years ago - STILL IN THE ORGINAL SHRINKWARP!! I wrapped up the album and gave it to my girlfriend for her birthday. She loved it.
Professor: As a Canadian I know the story well. I always got a kick out of looking at the Alias album cover. It's some sort of Lawman's badge - maybe a Sheriff's. Alias - Sheriff? Subtle...
"When I' With You"... I fell hard for the song when it was first released and then again in 89. I was fortunate to attend an REO/Alias gig at a small bar in my home town. The song was a featured song in me and my wife's' wedding (we're still married). Awesome episode POR!
The story we heard in Canada was when Sheriff disbanded, Arnold Lanni paid the other members and acquired the song rights and he basically made the money from the rise to #1. And Frozen Ghost was actually a popular band in Canada at the time with a more pop oriented sound.
Love it Professor, am old enough growing up in the "golden horseshoe" to not only remember Sheriff but to have seen them in the bar more then once ..... lol Got to see & hear many great bands before they got there time in the spot light, Red Rider, Helix, Honeymoon Suite, Concrete Blondes, Toronto .....aaah the 80s and 90s had a lot of good music here in Canada
I've loved Sheriff for years, and Alias. I had the sheriff's album imported. And bought both Alias albums. I blasted the tape of Sheriff out of my speakers in Bullfrog Lake Powell over Memorial Day weekend for my friends and everyone else to hear. I thought his voice was amazing!!!
I live in Upstate New York and I have to say that we kind of adopted Benny Mardones. Every summer when I was younger they had this week gig at the Federal Building in Syracuse call Party in the Plaza and Benny would show up and play at least two or three times each summer. He isn't the only musician that has ties to Upstate New York In addition to the Goo Goo Dolls, whom you did an earlier video, you have Lou Graham from Rochester. And Freddy Curci's Wife Lara Cody is a Voice Actress who does a lot of the Japanese Anime Stuff, and for you Spinal Tap fans out there, she was in a small part of the film playing a groupie. Lara talks a lot of her husband on her Facebook page and even posts clips like these on there. Also, my father owned the Sheriff LP back in the day when it first came out '82 just before "When I'm With You" became a hit song! He loves powerhouse singers like Curci, Frankie Previte from Frankie & the Knockouts, the Late Jimi Jamison from Survivor, Steve Perry, Lou Gramm among many others.

Very familiar with this story. I'm from Toronto and my friend bought the album when it first came out. The song was a minor success in the local market. I remember thinking, why was this song not a big hit. Then all those years later it exploded. I guess we were just a little ahead of the curve.
When I'm with You was a one of my many 'radio white whale' songs in the early 80s. I would only recognize the song, and not the title, AFTER the had DJ had announced who the band was. It took me and my friends years to finally learn it was Sheriff. Since there was no google we would ask the greatest music lovers or older teenagers. The struggle was real.lol Great episode 😃
The longest note held in a hit song is Summer Moved On by a-Ha. It wasn't a number one and it probably didn't chart in America, but it was a hit in other parts of the world.
I really like your channel! I like how you ended the segment with the story about the girlfriend. That makes it personal. I like when you mentioned another song, you didn't, like. I like this, cause it makes me think of stories of my past. I also like how you talk about dad, son and others in family. That solid story telling. Keeps rock and roll a live for me. Thank you for being real.
You are the best Professor! Not my style of music at all but it was hard to not like this tune when it came out. Was aware recently of the crazy history of this song but I love how you tell it. Our taste in music/ songs match up perfectly, been listening for many years now, best channel for music and I recommend you to anybody I talk music with. Happy holidays to you and your family.
In a completely different genre, Cecelia Bartoli holds a note from one of her arias for sn amazingly long time. It's on YT, & as notable for her facial expression while she's holding it, as if she's saying to the audience "Isn't this crazy? I can't believe Im doing this." It's worth having a look at.
Too many song titles have the same words ...example, More than words ( Alias) If I here that title to day I would immediately think of the group Extreme...... Power of Love.... Huey Lewis and then Celine Dion different song same title etc..... thanks for these Memories by Sherriff and Alias I loved both these song you featured . P.S. I too thought the Alias song was called I need you Now (LOL)
It always seemed to me that the name "Alias" was a reference to being an alternate name for Sheriff, and it really seems like it with their use of what looks like a sheriff's badge on most of the Alias album art.
i have never seen anything about molly hatchet, beatin the odds is an awesome driving song just so you know, whiskey man dreams i'll never see flirtin with disaster, all great tunes all never get radio play anymore
When I'm with you, love it, never a hit in Australia but I still remember buying the single on a 45, thanks to America top 40. Manage to even find the LP, such a cool album. Same for the Alias song, love it and love the album
Hey Professor, seeing how you're giving Canada some love, you should really do a deep dive into "Canada's Band" The Tragically Hip. Once you hear the music and discover their story, you will not be disappointed!
another great video, thanks. there was another guy who was a two time one hit wonder, he had a song in the 60's called time won't let me ( i think) then in the 70's he hit again with precious and few. i think he and the bands were from cleveland area.
Great songs! Great episode but you already did it. This was definitely more expansive than the other one. Thank God for grunge because we wouldn't know how insanely great the music before it was. Who knows how big that Damn Yankees would've been.
Whoa I had to do a double take! Your thumbnail is a picture of Jason Scheff from Chicago, and I love Jason. So I was a bit confused!! Still, another great episode!
Fun fact Sheriff three of its members went on to form two successful late 80s aor rock acts in Canada Arnold lanni and wolf hassell went on to form the successful late 80s rock act frozen ghost huge here in Canada i dont know if they made a dent in America but if you're a fan of late 80s melodic rock i highly recommend them and there's the lead vocalist Freddie curci who with former members of heart formed alias in 1990 who are known for the huge power ballad more than words can say pretty talented band for being a one hit wonder and also sherrifs 1982 album is an pomp rock classic must have for classic rock fans

Steve Perry…
Steve Perry followed closely by Bruce Dickinson.
Michael Hutchence

Our taste in music/ songs match up perfectly, been listening for many years now, best channel for music and I recommend you to anybody I talk music with. Happy holidays to you and your family.
Sounds like Bottles of Lightning, Professor! Great breakdown...BTW, you are the SHERIFF, now! lol
Wow! Thanks for the memories
I don't know what I just watched, but it was beautiful. Shall we do it again💋
Bonus episode!
Bonus!
Singer Morten Harket in Norwegian band a-ha holds a note for 20.2 seconds in their no 1 hit Summer Moved On from year 2000.
One of my favorites. And loved Alias even more.
1989 also had one of my favorite hidden gems of the 80's that was a hit #1, Toy Soldiers by Martika. LOVE if you did a video on that song
I heard the first song, but then the second one made me stop and pay attention! Nice move @POR
i have never seen anything about molly hatchet, beatin the odds is an awesome driving song just so you know, whiskey man dreams i'll never see flirtin with disaster, all great tunes all never get radio play anymore
When I'm with you, love it, never a hit in Australia but I still remember buying the single on a 45, thanks to America top 40. Manage to even find the LP, such a cool album. Same for the Alias song, love it and love the album
Canada Schmandada. That's like hitting 4 weeks at #1 in Minnesota.
Hey Professor, seeing how you're giving Canada some love, you should really do a deep dive into "Canada's Band" The Tragically Hip. Once you hear the music and discover their story, you will not be disappointed!
KLUC in Las Vegas started playing that song from Sheriff and other stations picked up on it
Perfect World from the soundtrack is awesome!
another great video, thanks. there was another guy who was a two time one hit wonder, he had a song in the 60's called time won't let me ( i think) then in the 70's he hit again with precious and few. i think he and the bands were from cleveland area.
My favorite Journey album on display... Evolution
Sheriff never charted here in Austrraia and Alias; More Than Words Can Say peaked at 21 in March 1991
Where are you now , by Jimmy Harnen is another song that hit big on its second coming !!!
There’s US famous, then there’s Canadian famous! We love our artists! Still get airplay! Even Nickelback! Lol!
Interesting episode professor. Freddie had a great vocal it was unfortunate they never was able to hold it together. Alias was also a talented group.
There’s actually many good songs on that Alias album…yes I remember!
The original version of “Into The Night” charted again. NOT the re-recording although it was released too.
Great songs! Great episode but you already did it. This was definitely more expansive than the other one. Thank God for grunge because we wouldn't know how insanely great the music before it was. Who knows how big that Damn Yankees would've been.
The final note on "Submarine Ladies" by America lasts 17 seconds.
Whoa I had to do a double take! Your thumbnail is a picture of Jason Scheff from Chicago, and I love Jason. So I was a bit confused!! Still, another great episode!
I noticed the same thing
He did have a great voice
I remember hearing More Than Words Can Say and wondering if it was sung by the lead singer of Sheriff:)
In the world of bottled lighting, Freddy Curci accomplished only 40% of what Tony Burrows managed to accomplish during the 1970's.
That Alias album is very good if you like AOR.
Thanks George!
@ProfessorofRock you're welcome definitely check out frozen ghost
