Great Journey songs 1- Faithfully 2- Lights 3- Open Arms 4- Anyway You Want It 5- Oh Sherry (Steve Perry) You won’t find many people who are a bigger Journey fan than me. My mom was the president of the official Journey fan club in the 80’s and travelled with the band while they were on tour. Most kids had lullabies sung to them in the womb and crib, but I had Journey songs sung to me. Steve Perry has one of the greatest and most unique voices ever. You never mistake his voice for someone else, you know exactly who it the second he starts singing. I’ve been waiting for so long for you to cover a Journey or Steve Perry song!
Open Arms is one of my top-tier all-time selections. I love driving down the highway and blowing out my voice to very few songs, but that one will always make the list.
Yes to all of the above, especially Lights, and Open Arms. Oh Sherry is also an all-time fave but not sure it shows off his range as much as the other songs. Was that actually Sherry acting as the lady in this video?? It really looks like her. ps. Holy cow your Mom lived life to the fullest! You're right, Steve Perry is instantly recognisable, his voice is very unique.

Yay!!!! So glad you liked this, it's about time!!! In 1983 when this song came out it was such a departure (sic) from what they did before and it blew my 13 year old mind!!! There are so many songs to dig into someone already mentioned the live version of Mother Father from Houston (that song sealed my fate). A lot of songs from the older albums predate MTV/music videos but there is a video for After the Fall -Frontiers and you've got to check out When You Love a Woman -Trial By Fire. Nothing like the Perry years of Journey
I like Steve better. Freddy was great, but when he does the high notes it's too much. I like Journey s catalog better. Queens lower range stuff was great. Just my opinion. Both are great
This is probably the most hilarious video that absolutely wasn't intended to be hilarious. It's a banger song for sure, but I have a special place in my heart for this piece of 80s memorabilia.
There was an amazing remix of this song on the Stranger Things Season 4 soundtrack. It blended so well with the typical synths of that show, and the scene they used it in got you so hyped for the upcoming battle with the villain.
ABSOLUTELY. When I first heard the Escape album way bacak then, I didn't care much for "Mother Father"...But, seeing the 1981 Life in Houston on MTV completely changed my opinion of it. Since then it is one of my favorite Journey songs. She likes John Farnham. I would compare the live version of "Mother Father" to Farnham's live version of "Help". It's a must see and hear.

Oh, good choice! As soon as I read the song title I immediately heard it in my head, as if I were watching him sing it live. This one doesn't always get the love it deserves.
Genuinely surprised that you're only now getting to Journey but absolutely thrilled to see it! Would love to see you cover some of their other classics! And I'm gonna echo some of the other commenters and say that an interview with Steve Perry is definitely worth looking into. Loved the analysis as always! Cheers!
Elizabeth, he's such a sweetheart that I can easily imagine him being willing to possibly go through some of your tests, especially if he could help artists in the future. I "fell in love" with him in 1982 when I was 12, and have always admired him and felt he was special. i don't think you have anything to lose in asking him, and it would probably make him feel pretty happy, too!! the older I get, I see where something like this would be another way to add to his legacy when he's gone, but selfishly, I hope we still have him for many, many years. 🥰 sending love to everyone, from Baton Rouge!! 💙💙
Yep, 1000%. The first two LPs with Steve Perry: Infinity and Evolution, still have Gregg Rollie featured prominently on vocals. He’s not in Perry’s league but he’s no slouch and his deeper “soulful” tone pairs very well Steve’s “cry”. Feeling That Way/Anytime is top-3 Journey for me.
Feeling That Way / Anytime is a set that always gets me. If I am wearing headphones I will Zone out and melt into those 2 songs. They never fail to give me serious Dopamine!
When I worked as a deejay at Rock 105 WTAO, I played those two songs back to back during each of my air shifts. I really loved cranking up the volume and giving more airplays to those specific songs.
Steve Perry’s solo career is also very worthy of a look at. “Oh Sherrie” is another power ballad where he comes out swinging, seems to back off a little, and builds back up. Now that I’m stuck in the “fight song”metaphor, the harmonies of “Separate Ways” are like the jabs steadily being thrown in before Steve comes in with the killer combo.
If you want your mind blown, do a back to back of Journey - Mother, Father with both Steve Perry (the OG singer of the track), and then a version sung by their then drummer Deen Castronovo.. whilst he's playing the drums (get the live from las vegas 2008 version for Deen). Honestly, its astonishing. Perrys original vocal part is fantastic. Then hearing Deen do an essentially pitch perfect rendition whilst still playing insane drum parts is just something else. Would love to hear you analyse them both at the same time, compare and contrast lol..
This is definitely one of my favorite songs, period. I think "Stone in Love" is one of their underrated gems that you could provide some great analysis on.
Yes, and also, I have long been on a campaign to bring back "stone" as an adverb of intensity for a while, as "Stone in Love" and "stone cold fox" are perfect examples (sub-campaign to bring back that usage of "fox"/"foxy") 🤣🤘🦊
I love that you're analyzing a lot of songs that I grew up to, it makes me relook at the song and artist in another way, along with reminding me how much I love them. Thanks Elizabeth
Mother Father, and Still They Ride are still, to this day, all these years later two of the greatest Steve Perry vocal performances… the very first record I ever purchased, with my own money, when I was very young, was the Escape album, by Journey. Those two songs are absolutely next level, vocal performances.
Journey! Yay! Can’t wait to see you react to my favorite Journey song, “Wheel in the Sky", in particular the 1978 official video version. Steve Perry is at his very best, doing some mind-blowing things with that mind-blowing voice!
Steve Perry is god tier classic rock rock singer during his prime. Robert Plant, Freddie Mercury, Brad Delp - he could run with all of them no problem.
Definitely Mother Father Live in Houston ‘81 is by far one of the best live performances ever, hands down. No one has the pipes to sing that song like Steve. Would LOVE to see you review it!!
You have to do a live version of a Journey to see and hear how great a singer Steve Perry is. Would recommend "Mother, Father" or one of my favourite ballads ever - "Open Arms".
I have a problem with Open Arms. An old girlfriend once sang to me, "So now I come to you, with bro-o-o-o-ken arms...", and she imitated Steve Perry's arm movements in videos when he's singing songs like this. I can't help hearing/seeing "broken arms" now. 😖
My favorite Journey song is "Still They Ride." Steve Perry's use of his voice to fill out the partial chords and arpeggios from Neal Schon's guitar is brilliant.
Anything from Journey will blow you away. Many live recordings from Steve that you can analyze, Elizabeth! He’s just as incredible in concert. Try, Open Arms Live Houston 1981 for the next one……
If I can be honest, I think Steve Perry’s incomparable voice was definitely overdue here. I realize there are tons & tons of amazing artists to check out. But his nickname is actually “The Voice”, and in my view his vocals deserve their place on any reaction channel. No reactors are ever let down or disappointed with his performances- even those with no pro acumen know the man can *sing*. One of the greatest tenors of all time in my book, and one of the best voices that ever sang popular music. P.S. The album version of this song has a section the video edit cut out, that has vocal points worth a listen.
Mother Father Live in Houston. He's sweaty, looks tired, but love his resolve and recovery! :) Also to hear Steve harmonize, he does a duet with Gregg Rolie on Feeling That Way. I saw the Escape tour in Detroit at Pine Knob. Best concert I have ever seen.
I love Steve Perry- is there another Rock vocalist as precise as he is? Razor edge singing and diction with technique, nuance all over the place. Also, Passion that never ends. Neil Schon is an incredible guitar Player, really the entire band is just amazing! Taking me back to High School and MTV. What a time to be young and enjoying the sounds
The live version of "Mother, Father" is his vocal masterpiece. If you're looking for a definitive Steve Perry vocal performance, that's the one to analyze.
I so wish I'd had a voice teacher like you back in the day. I struggled with high notes (although everyone said I was a soprano) and my college voice teacher was the type to use nebulous imagery rather than being more specific about what actually was going on inside my body (which my very literal self needed to know). Nice analysis!
Live in Houston 1981 was remastered, I would recommend watching the entire concert. It will blow you away ❤ by the way, I saw them in concert just a few months earlier that same year, in Eugene, Oregon. It was an incredible experience, along with 20,000 other people in the stadium. 🥰
After flooding many of your comment sections for several years, pleading with you to do an analysis of Steve Perry's incomparable voice, you have finally done it! I am so elated. Thank you!!!. I hope this is one of many commentaries you do on Journey. In my opinion, Steve Perry's voice is just so powerful and resonate that he deserves to be featured on your channel. Leaving him out of a channel devoted to speaking about exceptional vocal work would be tantamount to having a channel devoted to the greatest basketball players, and excluding Michael Jordan from the conversation.
Hi Elzabeth! Journey is one of my favorite bands of all time. I´ll give you a list: Special attention: Faithfully, Edge of the blade, Who´s crying now, Lights, After the fall. Don´t stop believin´ Any way you want it Open Arms Only the young Wheel in the sky I´ll be alright without you Ask the lonely Lovin´, touchin´, squeezin´ Send her my love The party´s over (Hopelessly in love) Still they ride Rubicon When you love a woman Thank you!!
Great analysis, Elizabeth! I recommend an off the beaten path Journey song, or really two. "Feelin' That Way" and "Anytime" come from a transition period where Steve Perry wasn't the only vocalist in the group. The songs go from one right into the other, and the duets Perry does with Gregg Rolie are just incredible!
One that really showcases his strength at carrying those crystal highs is Stone in Love. It's got a very different lyric structure than many other popular songs, and a kickin guitar solo at the end. It's definitely one to check out that most folk forget about until they hear it again!
Just listened to this one and thought your insight into the song was fantastic! Thanks so much! You mentioned when you did the metallic song "nothing else matters" that it was the song fans had recommended with "the most reverence." Can't wait to hear you do journey's "Don't stop believin'" because we all feel the same way about this song! Thanks so much for what you do! P.S. I'm going to have to sign up for singing classes now because I woke my wife up last night jamming along to this oldie.... LOL
Wow, a lot of votes for 1981 LIve "Mother Father"...and I agree. I would also vote for some pre-Escape songs that show off Perry's voice in his youth. "Patiently", "Opened The Door", and "Winds of March"....The live version of those songs absolutely blew me away at that time. NOBODY in Rock could come close to Perry's voice at that time. Yes, he had a bit of a rasp during Escape...and it steadily grew worse with time. But, before Escape, it was pure and clear and astronomically high.
Elizabeth takes the dive into Journey! Okay, what's next in their catalog? "Don't Stop Believing"; "Any Way You Want It"; "Open Arms"; or maybe a power ballad like "Faithfully"? All four are recommended. Also your face on the thumbnail is priceless!!! Like you're not quite sure about what you've gotten yourself into!
You're in for spectacular discoveries with Journey! Steve Perry's voice is just so powerful all the time! Pretty much anything from the album Escape, but a lot of other albums too.
The way you dissect a song is pretty fascinating. I probably played that song hundreds of times in my old radio career and never would have spliced up that tune like you do. Thanks.😎
The Journey Escape Live in Houston performance is absolutely amazing for Steve’s vocal performance live. Any song from that show would be a gem to see you analyze!
I could definitely envision Elizabeth as the Rick Beato equivalent for vocalist interviews! Also, Steve Perry’s solo song “Oh Sherry” is one of my favorites!
Ask him for an interview, he's still around and still singing, you could ask him all of these questions. We would love to see it.
Oh YES! Please ask him for an interview! :)
I really think she could do amazing interviews, because she knows so much about the mechanics and philosophy of vocals. It would be like Rick Beato, but singing instead of instruments
Agree.
Sing a duet with him!
Excellent suggestion!

After over 30 years, hearing Steve on You'd better wait, still sends chills down my spine. Steve was and still is the voice.
Mother, Father 1981- Live!!!!
YOU'RE WELCOME 🙏🏼
Mother Father, and Still They Ride are still, to this day, all these years later two of the greatest Steve Perry vocal performances… the very first record I ever purchased, with my own money, when I was very young, was the Escape album, by Journey. Those two songs are absolutely next level, vocal performances.
Steve Perry sounds even better live. Check out the 81 Escape tour. Mother Father is an amazing vocal performance.
Journey - Mother Father live houston - best ever ---
@euryalestheno that song is great great great great great great
Journey! Yay! Can’t wait to see you react to my favorite Journey song, “Wheel in the Sky", in particular the 1978 official video version. Steve Perry is at his very best, doing some mind-blowing things with that mind-blowing voice!
Steve Perry has RAW TALENT. Hard to find anymore.
Mother Father from the live 1981 show in Houston..... Best example of his range and ability.
Beat me to it! Such virtuosity.
Steve Perry is god tier classic rock rock singer during his prime. Robert Plant, Freddie Mercury, Brad Delp - he could run with all of them no problem.
The late Brad Delp is a name we don’t hear as often as we should. He definitely belongs in that group with all those legends. So underrated.
Rik Emmett in his prime was amazing as well.
@@heathersullivan2561 Absolutely!
I would add RJD, Rik Emmett, Robin Zander, and Ian Gillan to the greats list!
Lights and Any Way You Want It would be on my short list of additional Journey songs to check out. Thanks for the great analysis as always!
Definitely Mother Father Live in Houston ‘81 is by far one of the best live performances ever, hands down. No one has the pipes to sing that song like Steve. Would LOVE to see you review it!!
Absolutely his best performance! I posted the same suggestion.
@@marcos061059 Same and 1000% agree.
Mother/Father live in Houston. Faithfully live from Japan when Steve had the flu but was incredible. Anything live from Steve will blow you away
Lovin’ Touchin’ Squeezin’ was my introduction to Journey, and still one of my favourites. Amazing harmonies!
Mother, Father on the escape tour in 81 is phenomenal
You have to do a live version of a Journey to see and hear how great a singer Steve Perry is. Would recommend "Mother, Father" or one of my favourite ballads ever - "Open Arms".
Who's Crying and Lights.
Yes to all of this!!
I have a problem with Open Arms. An old girlfriend once sang to me, "So now I come to you, with bro-o-o-o-ken arms...", and she imitated Steve Perry's arm movements in videos when he's singing songs like this. I can't help hearing/seeing "broken arms" now. 😖
@@murasaki848 "Broken Arms" 🤣😂
I was a sophomore in high school at that point! ❤ LOVE YOUR REVIEWS AND YOUR TEAM ELIZABETH!
"Idk if I could replicate that even if I tried." That's Steve Perry's voice in a nutshell!
For Steve too.
Mother, Father live in Houston 1981. Absolute masterclass performance !
You hear how a person's voice soars into the great beyond from different people or events, but his voice, always soars to another time.
My favorite Journey song is "Still They Ride." Steve Perry's use of his voice to fill out the partial chords and arpeggios from Neal Schon's guitar is brilliant.
Absolutely one of their best songs. Perry's vocal tones mimicking Neil's guitar is amazing.
My favorite part is The verse:
"Spinning around, in a spell
Oh, it's hard to leave this carousel"
It's like vocal gymnastics.
💯
Widely considered one of, if not the best, rock vocalists ever.
wow thanks
Steve Perry and Brad Delp. Then everyone else.
@@JoeCool2342Ronnie James Dio, Geoff Tate, and Rob Halford have something to say
@@RobertStewart-vr2rg Yeah: "Tying for second isn't bad."
@@RobertStewart-vr2rg Bruce Dickinson, who sang with opera singers on some songs.
P.S. The album version of this song has a section the video edit cut out, that has vocal points worth a listen.
all of this
Mother Father Live in Houston.
Elizabeth, you REALLY should do their 1981 live version of MOTHER, FATHER. Probably Steve Perry's most impressive vocal performance.
Concur, this is likely Steve Perry's best performance.
Yes, definitely!
Please do the live version of 'Mother Father' for the next Journey reaction! 🙏
May your channel reach the 5 million mark for this review!!!!!!!!!!
The live version of "Mother, Father" is his vocal masterpiece. If you're looking for a definitive Steve Perry vocal performance, that's the one to analyze.
Mother, Father Live. Best of Steve Perry's vocals.
I so wish I'd had a voice teacher like you back in the day. I struggled with high notes (although everyone said I was a soprano) and my college voice teacher was the type to use nebulous imagery rather than being more specific about what actually was going on inside my body (which my very literal self needed to know). Nice analysis!
It's pretty impossible not to fall in love with Steve Perry's voice.
This is my all time favorite Journey Song. Can't wait for this.
Ditto. I love Journey and this is easily my favourite of theirs.
Same.

You are best!!! Happy New Year Dear!!!
What’s really going to blow you away is listening to Steve Perry singing live. He’s even better than in the studio. He’s incredible!
Live in Houston 1981 was remastered, I would recommend watching the entire concert. It will blow you away ❤ by the way, I saw them in concert just a few months earlier that same year, in Eugene, Oregon. It was an incredible experience, along with 20,000 other people in the stadium. 🥰
@@jlcullumyou mean 1981? Also, live in Osaka 1980 is PHENOMENAL
@@jennifero7189 yes, that was a typo! 1981
@jlcullum I got the vinyl for 81 Houston and I agree that hes better live
I never realized you haven't reacted to journey yet but i think you will love Steve. Great voice and really high notes for a dude!
My favorite Journey song, It should have been released as a single “Stone In Love”!
Mother, Father ... a must!
Faithfully = masterpiece. Who's Crying Now live in Houston, Open Arms same show are all greatness!!!
Hi Elzabeth! Journey is one of my favorite bands of all time. I´ll give you a list:
Special attention: Faithfully, Edge of the blade, Who´s crying now, Lights, After the fall.
Don´t stop believin´
Any way you want it
Open Arms
Only the young
Wheel in the sky
I´ll be alright without you
Ask the lonely
Lovin´, touchin´, squeezin´
Send her my love
The party´s over (Hopelessly in love)
Still they ride
Rubicon
When you love a woman
Thank you!!
Here's to After the Fall and Send Her My Love.
MOTHER FATHER, THE BEST ROCK BALLAD EVER PERFORMED LIVE!
Mother father live from Houston...you will love those vocals.
One that really showcases his strength at carrying those crystal highs is Stone in Love. It's got a very different lyric structure than many other popular songs, and a kickin guitar solo at the end. It's definitely one to check out that most folk forget about until they hear it again!
Stone in Love is one of my favorites, so is Still They Ride !
Mother Father has amzing moloncholic vocals!
Finally. Been waiting a long long time. Please do live performances
You think she’s ready for “Open Arms?”
I second "Open Arms" -- another breakup special, and one of the best.
@@hughfuller8416 Ha! I don't know, but it would be fun to hear her reaction.
All those are really good, for sure.
@@hughfuller8416she needs to bring a lot tissue!😅
You're in for spectacular discoveries with Journey! Steve Perry's voice is just so powerful all the time! Pretty much anything from the album Escape, but a lot of other albums too.
The way you dissect a song is pretty fascinating. I probably played that song hundreds of times in my old radio career and never would have spliced up that tune like you do. Thanks.😎
One of the great Rock Vocalists of all time. Not an exaggeration
thanks
Mother Father is a vocal acrobatic amazing piece
The Journey Escape Live in Houston performance is absolutely amazing for Steve’s vocal performance live. Any song from that show would be a gem to see you analyze!
I just have to Congratulate you on Your Channel!! 1.8 mil. Subscribers are Incredible!! Journey "Mother Father" is Steve's Best I.M.O. All The Best!!
Still They Ride, incredible vocals. Sweet and Simple is another. Unbelievable vocals acrobatics.
Both of these songs are on my first tier guitar practice routine - because I love them so much.
I could definitely envision Elizabeth as the Rick Beato equivalent for vocalist interviews!
Also, Steve Perry’s solo song “Oh Sherry” is one of my favorites!
Love Rick's music analysis. Great comparison. Would be awesome to see Rick and Elizabeth team up on some analysis!
Mother Father is a truly fantastic vocal performance live. It also has a piano solo at the end and we know how much you love those!❤
That’s my favorite journey song
Yes!!! This!!!
