I worshiped that album when it came out (still dig it) I also play keys. Never in a million years would I have guessed that was a keyboard. I always thought it was a pick slide. I was also in middle school at the time and my parents were very religious. People today have no idea how much music divided children and parents back then. Some of the worst family problems I ever had were because of music. The one thing that should bring people together.

My favorite part was learning that it was a pawn shop Worlitser that opened the song. I always thought it sounded like he was scraping the pick up and down the fretboard, so I learned something which is always cool!
A very close second though Is a Young Professor climbing up boom box in hand, and sacrificing his cassette to spite this simple minded shop/gym teacher...and scurrying down, hiding the ladder and making it back to the group WITHOUT getting caught!! I'm as happy to have heard that as I am to learn that King Edward helped in the development of the Floyd Rose!!

The Floyd Rose double locking tremolo was the biggest invention since the guitar itself!

If it wasn't mentioned here I would have gone to my grave believing that intro was done on a guitar. I still find it remarkable he created that sound on a keyboard fed through an amp.
That was a great story, prof! Thanks for sharing. I'll share one of my own. It's not a prank of EVH related though.
I had a woodshop teacher, a no nonsense ex-marine, who enjoyed classic rock but certainly wasn't into the long haired, leather clad metal bands his students enjoyed. One morning he saw me flipping through a metal magazine and ordered me to bring it forward. He scoffed as he kept flipping through the pages and making fun of the band images he saw there. Then he turned the page to a Pat Benatar photo and paused with an auditory exclamation. I chuckled. Another morning he was playing Zeppelin through his little desk radio before class started. I walked up to the desk to listen better. He was surprised I would enjoy that considering what he thought about my tastes based on that magazine. I'd like to think it was a minor bonding moment that actually got my use of the planer prioritized later in the year.

It was also via a boom box, which I didn’t own, in fact, I didn’t own the cassette nor the boom box. Needless to say, my first reaction to the VH music that day was “It Froze me”! Literally, I didn’t know how to absorb such a different and unique delivery of music? But, what I recognized immediately was how it associated with my thoughts and feelings! Keeping in mind, I’m in my teens. Looking back now, I can honestly say that I NEVER will forget that day nor the fellow ( Doug Golden ) who introduced me to what would become anthem music for the remainder of my life! Growing up with VH music was quite honestly and continues to be my go to music that always allows me to reflect on both the greatness of life and music! Blessings to Eddie and all the remaining members! As time continues to progress I will forever remain loyal to VH music, it drafted my life!!

I'm going to have to agree with you on that one. This is actually one of their songs that I had never heard before this video. I don't know how missed hearing it before. Also, I don't understand why it didn't do better than 55 on the Hot 100. It should have at least made it to the top ten if not all the way to number one. Like many others have already commented, I would never have guessed that it was a keyboard on that intro.

    Hi Prof!!!
Ya know... Every generation has someone who comes along and just turns the world on it's ear!! Some even change an entire industry while holding on firmly to the ENTIRE GENERATION AND ITS GAP!!!!! Yeah man... Eddie V. was that person who had BOTH HANDS FIRMLY around THE NECK of generations I found myself in, and in both directions, those who came slightly before mine, mine and those who came slightly after mine, and with no end in sight!!!
If anyone was to ask me, when and or who was the one that finally gave you... MUSICAL SATISFACTION, I have and I always will say, with unwavering enthusiasm, VANHALEN!
Their first album finally provide me with what I was looking for in music satisfaction as they touched on every point needed to complete that task!!! I was lucky enough to have family, family friends and their connections to the music industry, giving me access to music most people only get to hear after it is written, recorded, spit polished and presented to the masses and usually via the radio. I was able to hear, from very early cassette recordings, Vanhalen music that was circa, 1973 while they were still slugging it out in the trenches of the music industry while running the gamut of the club scene, the private party scene and anywhere they could get a pair of ears to listen to them!! The first time I heard them they were good, really good and better (to me...😆) then what was coming down the pipe, and my way, via the "Wrecking crew!!" And though a great bunch of musicians, they made their living recording pop music as heard on Television shows, AM radio and pop driven FM radio, but I was looking for something more and due to an older cousin and one who provided me with some of the cassettes and boisterously claimed..."This Vanhalen band is going to be great, just wait and see!!!" Boy was he right, but it was not until 1978 that they reached out and fully consumed me with their music and sound that gave me that musical satisfaction!! But by the time they got to this Album, W. & C. F. I had grown a bit tired of the D.L.R. scream, and those E.VH. repetitive guitar leads and playing!! They certainly were innovative and after Dave, bringing in Sammy made them loveable again, as they dropped the proverbial ball with Gary, a Great vocalist, just not a VH vocalist for sure!!! Despite all that, I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall when "Cradle" came screaming on and giving on gym teaching a near nervous breakdown!!!!
ANYWAY, KEEP ON KEEPING ON BROTHER!!!!!!!
    PEACE!!!!!!! 🤘🏼

I first saw Van Halen in 1979 on the Van Halen II tour. I saw Van Halen agin in 1980 and watched Michael Anthony play the keyboard parts to And The Cradle Will Rock. We were right up front and one of my friends caught the scarf David Lee Roth threw off stage. Probably my best Van Halen concert was the US Festival '83 where we were right up front. I've seen many videos of this concert and can't believe I haven't seen myself.

Just remembering this era, started middle school in 1979 and graduated high school in 1985. Just the massive amount of music that was available. The stuff being released , The wall, Highway to hell, Van Halen, Back in Black, VaN Halen II, and Women and Children first, Blizzard of Oz, Diary of a madman,. So much new music and hearing Ozzy for the first time made us go back and listen to Black Sabbath and stuff like that. I think that was great time to grow up. We had so much great music being released but stuff like Hendrix, Janis Joplin, the Beatles, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Led Zeppelin and many more were still very prevalent.

I do have a copy of Women And Children First, actually 2 copies of you count the copy in the Studio Albums 1978-1984 box. I love the prank on your gym teacher. Being dyslexic I was never a star in physical education class. I used to hack around in PE and just not take it seriously, which drove my gym coaches to distraction. In my senior year of high school I used to skip PE, and the coaches knew I was skipping the class, but they never caught me at it. But I pulled off a great prank on the school, and it involved some physical ability and about two months of planning.
With the involvement of two friends of mine we hatched a plan on the bus to school one day. The bus would pass a place that would buy used cars and strip them down for parts. There was a VW that was on the lot right next to the road. In shop class we started to build a "row boat". It was actually a way to get the lumber to build a ramp. One night about a month before graduation late at night we met up and drove out to the car parts place and put the VW on a flat bed and brought out to the school, a distance of about 3 miles. We then put together our ramp and set up a block and tackle and winched the car up the ramp and chocked it down on the domed roof of the auditorium. I was straddling the ramp pushing the car from behind. Even though we were tired from all the exertion we went to school in the morning. We knew the administrators would go through the absentee list to find possible suspects. We avoided being caught by hiding in plain sight. I know some in the school admin probably knew I did it, but we left no identifying marks for them to follow. Any foot prints or fingerprints would be erased by the morning dew, both on the car and in the grass around the school. In the end the car was removed from the roof with a crane and it was returned to the parts yard no real worse for the wear, just class of 1980 in spray paint on the driver's side door. And nobody in the school admin ever asked me or my two cohorts if we knew anything about how a car got on the roof. And all three of us had copies of Women And Children First.

It represents the youth getting fed up with the unfairness of the slavery system! That's what all the rock bands expressed! Rebellion! And your story should be made into a movie! So good! Really nice story. I can imagine how funny that was at the time. My only Van Halen story has to do with their album 1984. I have gone to my share of concerts in the '70s and '80s. It was the 1984 album that I had won tickets being caller number 9 on the radio. What makes this concert different was the fact they played 2 shows at Market Square Arena on July 5th and 6th. Just a couple days after the 4th. I didn't think anything of it as we got there. While we were waiting for the concert to start all you heard was bottle rockets and firecrackers going off the whole time. As things were going crazy my buddy and I was sitting there watching all this go down. All of a sudden I see out of the corner of my eye a fuse burning down. I told everyone to move before it exploded. Nothing happened so I looked down and it was a cigarette butt that was glowing. We all had a good laugh and sat back down. I couldn't believe that so many fireworks could have made it in. We waited and finally, VH came on and started playing. Diamond Dave was awesome and Eddie ruled the show. Great times.

Great video piece! It can also be noted with a great deal of prior knowledge of Eddie's experimental and revolutionary artistry of guitar talent can be likewise noted with his power drill intro on the song "pound cake". These are the moments in music that make one grateful to have experienced them as they happened. What more can you say with the single utterance of the name EDDIE?
