MrWondowedi. You see it burning but can't believe it happened.........you have never seen any Gods yet believe they exist because of an old book written by men.
It is ONLY THE ROOF that has been lost. The Interior is intact. Windows have been lost but they can recover the glass. You should never have left the building that was being worked on - alone without a watchman, without any fire protection. At best only 3 streams of water to try tp put of the fire. Ah, flapper lady again. While the roof was a flaming mass, they fire fighters were inside. ONLY the vaulting over the corssing fell. The rest of the ceiling vaults is intact.
Sad part is all these historical events it’s survived: Joan of Arc being regarded as a Saint there, Napoleon crowned emperor, Louis XIV crowned king, the devastation of the French Revolution and two world wars and yet it stood tall. Now, in 2019 some dude named Pierre was probably lighting up a cigarette on his 9-5 shift and burned the whole thing down. It’s irreplaceable
dendennis23 Quite possibly, though suspect there’s plenty of blame to go around in terms of a lack of funds to keep it restored over the years. A tragedy like this is really reminiscent (though not exactly the same) of the 9/11 tragedy and the burning of the historic Library of Alexandria- both crimes against humanity. Unspeakable loss, but hopefully, this tragedy will bring everyone together for a greater purpose.
Weren’t there any fire extinguishers on the construction site? It was 18:30 when the fire started and it cannot not start itself, there must be human involvement so why the fire was not put off at the beginning? There’s so many weird things it’s too early to talk about rebuild, if you neglected your “national treasure” and did not make enough precautions to prevent such a fire, then I don’t see any meaning to rebuild it
Hey - woman with the flapping mouth. The roof has burned there is nothing left to re-ignite. The water likely turned to steam. There will be spawling. The windows didn't crack the lead dams melted. The cause is negligence. The fire started under the spire. Welding - on a wooden roof. The fire was first observed at 6:05. For days the doomsayers will make this tragedy into a major catastrophy. Yes, much damage but MOST of it is ABOCE the vaulted ceiling. People look at the interior photos - Seats still sitting there without any damage. The wood roof burned. The stone structure is still standing.... Stop the sensation. Don't make it worse than it is. Anything to create sensational news.
There is no point having skilled artisans working on the Cathedral when 80% of the work-force are low paid labourers. A mill near me burnt down : it was youth-program lad having a smoke, he got 3yrs in prison for negligence. Why not employ all skilled workers and just pay the extra in salaries ?
It’s the difference between a $300,000 job vs a $300,000,000 job. Feel free to aid in paying that bill for your opinion or do you have only spit up your opinion when it’s not your own money?

the usual french incompetence, it burned for 12 hours. in the first 2 hours no firefighters showed up. then there were TWO hoses spraying water on the fire. one of the two could not even reach the fire. they could have dropped fire extinguishing powders on it and put the fire out (like we do on forests, or indoors). but nothing. then when they came, they had to draw water from the Seine!!!! the good old medieval times revisited in Paris of 2019...

It is amazing what can be accomplished through restoration. I say this to give the people of Paris hope. Old Town Lunenburg Nova Scotia is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The stunningly beautiful St. John's Anglican Church was restored after a devastating fire. Although much smaller in scale the restoration was masterful and supported financially from across North America and the World. To see it now you would not believe how extensive the destruction was. What will come from the Notre-Dame fire is an incredible amount of work for artists and experts in so many fields. Life, energy and an employment future for very specific expertise will come from the ashes of this fire. It will not be exactly the same but skills that were lost will be rediscovered and encouraged to flourish. Good will come from this devastation.
One thing Europe has is firefighting equipment that's behind what we have here in the states. The fire apparatus they use in Europe are so damn small. Here in America they're like battleships. I've seen ladder trucks that have a platform mount ladder that can extend 100+ feet with a telescoping tower pipe with a 5 inch water nozzle. Galant effort on the Paris fire brigade, but if they upgraded to some larger ladder trucks, it would make their job easier and more efficient.
The larger the trucks get, the fewer streets they can use, the longer they take to be set up. Paris has broad avenues that were once cut out of the existing city, so there is more space than in many other European cities, but still...
I think that the Paris Fire Brigade would be delighted to hear you telling them how to do their jobs efficiently. The streets of Paris (and in most of Europe actually) are narrow, so smaller apparatus are a must, otherwise you won't be able to even reach the incident. Size does not mean anything there, european trucks are smaller because they have smaller pumps and water tanks than their US counterparts... But they carry as much equipment, more firefighters, are nimbler, cheaper... They are just perfectly suited to a different approach of firefighting, but certainly not behind in terms of efficiency. Also, standard French ladders are generally 32m long (104 ft), pretty much like US ladders... I don't think you realize the sheer size of Notre-Dame, no firefighting equipment is made to fight anything like this.
No, fortunately, nobody was killed. However, you can feel devastated not only when people die, but also when something significant for people's souls is destroyed. My feeling of devastation is as strong as it was in Septemer 2001. Hope now you are able to understand me.
@@paradisebreeze1705 you are quite right! It's a building... But even stones if they are touched by souls of good-natured people and their creative hands can get 'alive'... Don't you think so?
If people knew the 'health and safety' procedures on any building or renovation site they would never blame the workers for their negligence before there is any proof whatsoever. One of the procedure is that after any kind of 'hot' work there are watchers many hours after the work is done to prevent this very occurrence.
Haha you might think so... I'm a welder and metal worker for a living and work on sites all the time... most sites need you to sign a hot works permit before any kind of work like that can begin and you're supposed to stay on fire watch for an hour after work stops... but doesn't always happen and can often take longer than that for a fire to start.... but in my experience very rare... quite likely they were reinforcing the roof with steel work as probably had some structural issues due to its age and some welding may have needed to be done in situe as always the case with renovation and refurb jobs in my experience as old buildings are normally always out of level or square or sagging/sinking in many places so could be a possible reason how it started

No doubt its a huge cultural loss but it is still just a building. There are thousands of living humans around the world losing their lives to terrorism, ethnic violence, political crisis, social injustice, hunger and poverty etc... We should mourn more about them. Syria, Burma, Sudan, Somalia, Central African Republic, Libya, Afghanistan, Iraq, Yemen, Kashmir, Venezuela, Cameroon and many more areas are currently facing such crisis. The loss of the cathedral is a loss but not equivalent to the life of a single human. The world needs to feel for those humans more than lifeless buildings.
@Rose James I have mentioned about 12 different countries and regions in my comment and I dont live in any one of them so stop the nonsense about "go and solve your problem or you are the cause of ur own problem bla bla". I am simply a part of this world just like you and we are the same specie and share the same planet so fortunately or unfortunately we are connected and should feel for each other. These Buildings can be restored but you cannot bring a dead person to life so there is no comparison at all between the loss of a building and the loss of a life.. And you cannot be inconsiderate to half of the world's population who are living miserable lives because u never know abt your own future... So its not just my problem or ur problem its our problem... Just image we are living in a world where you feel sorry for a burnt building and when asked about the sufferings of other humans you say that since they are the cause of problem so they deserve it... Salute to your inconsiderate thinking...... 🤐

It's being reported the Obamas were on a Seine river cruise in Paris sipping wine while Notre Dame burned. If any videos of this from the cruise, see how good the Obama's faux lamentation was.
It is NOT lost. It has not been destroyed. The roof which was a timber structure, has been burned The roof can be rebuilt. The interior ceiling was damaged at the crossing if they could build it 800 years ago they can rebuild it today. The timber roof is the easy part. Yes, there was spawling of the upper stones fromt he heat but most important - seeing the interior photos - there is little damage in the nave.
.. What! I can't believe this, just last night I watched the movie, "Before Sunset" Ethan Hawke & Julie Delpy, in it, Ethan talks about Notra Dam, when the Germans retreated in France they placed explosives in the cathedral, one German was left behind to detonate, he didn't because he said the cathedral was too beautiful. Now I see on the news it's burnt to the ground practically! How's that for coincidence!
Fire cannot destroy this building credit the builders not the firefighters entirely they did heroic things but they did NOT save the building it saved itself we must not forget that.
I credit both the skill of the builders and also the firefighters. This would have been one of the hardest fires to fight for many firefighters, esp. for the ones of faith, but also the ones who love the French heritage of this beautiful monument to God. We can't take away their efforts either.

Sainte Jeanne d'Arc yes that is part of it. But more importantly it is the wide variation in fire equipment and response time that concerns me. With hundreds of eyewitnesses how can such a variation of reporting exist. I am sure that your construction safety regulations are very strict especially with a site of this importance, how a simple act of negligence would even be possible.
I'm actually French Canadian, just to not mislead you. This doesn't seem to be a variation in reporting, this seems to be the only narrative that is allowed. There's a Fox news clip I just saw where a Frenchman was trying to report that there had been a slew of church attacks, fires and desecrations in Paris, but he got rudely cut off and told he wasn't allowed to talk about that. It was quite stunning actually.
Sainte Jeanne d'Arc At least 10 church desecration’s in France in the past 6 months, so I hear. Sad that we never get to hear the whole story anymore. Controlled media. I’m in the USA and got to thinking about the date of this tragedy, it was Monday April 15, 2013 that the Boston bombings occurred.
Not just France destiny...all the people who have as much culture have felt a huge loss and we all feel the need to contribute a bit to the reconstruction of the Cathedral. But the shock at the sight of the flames that devour the cathedral will not forget quickly.

There are more tragic things happening in the world.
So what? Whats that supposed to mean...they shouldn't report this because it's not the WORST thing ever???
bentleyr00d yes
I was there in 80-81, VERY SAD
How can such a horrible incident happen? Without Notre Dame France will never be the same again.

Buildings come and go. We were just unfortunate to be the witnesses of it.
Prayers from Montréal
There is no point having skilled artisans working on the Cathedral
when 80% of the work-force are low paid labourers.
A mill near me burnt down : it was youth-program lad having a smoke,
he got 3yrs in prison for negligence.
Why not employ all skilled workers and just pay the extra in salaries ?
It’s the difference between a $300,000 job vs a $300,000,000 job. Feel free to aid in paying that bill for your opinion or do you have only spit up your opinion when it’s not your own money?

This is very difficult and detailed work. You aren’t just throwing up cookie cutter towers. This place isn’t constructed like modern buildings whatsoever.
So Sad that I won't be able to see the inside of the cathedral before it burned would have loved to
Goes to show sadly, once again that people do not appreciate what they have until it's gone.
It is time to build a modern roof. This will be a synthesis of generations.

The thing that will make my Easter Day is more good information, Along with a new spire in the making.
Wondering about security policies at the cathedral. Who had access to the area where the fire began?
8:50 Sir do not ask God "why?" ! God did not set the fire! People did!
Such a sad thing to happen. The first building I visited when I went to France/Paris for the first time. 'Vive La France'.
Mine too...even more important and a “must see” than the Eiffel Tower.
In my opinion, THE MOST important landmark in Paris- an unspeakable tragedy.
Although I appreciate the comments at 19:00... AND the burning of Notre Dame is a great tragedy... the loss of history can not be compared to the loss of lives in 911.
Yes and im sick of hearing this compared to 911 we lost alot of loved ones and lost alot of loved ones after the fact from what it did to our emergency workers that breath all smoke and chemicals..people had no bodies to bury never recovered all the lost ones. 😢😢

French build thed church whit slave labour and stolen money and natural resources from other countries what come free is just go to flame hahahahaha
The hard fact is that one day that cathedral will collapse,it can never get rebuilt,we are lucky that it didn’t collapse
the usual french incompetence, it burned for 12 hours. in the first 2 hours no firefighters showed up. then there were TWO hoses spraying water on the fire. one of the two could not even reach the fire. they could have dropped fire extinguishing powders on it and put the fire out (like we do on forests, or indoors). but nothing. then when they came, they had to draw water from the Seine!!!! the good old medieval times revisited in Paris of 2019...
I wonder if the crown of thorns survived? I hope it did!
THE SAD THING IS THE LOSS OF THE THINGS IN THAT CHURCH THAT CAN NEVER BE REPLACED. A PIECE OF HISTORY AND FAITH THAT WILL NEVER BE REPLACED IS THE SADDEST OF ALL. THE GLASS GONE, THAT CAN BE REPLACED WITH TODAY'S EFFORTS, BUT THAT GLASS WAS MADE IN THE 13TH CENTURY, AND ISN'T THE SAME TODAY. A HISTORY, GONE. THE CHORE OF 200 YEARS TO BUILD, GONE IN A DAY.

When ever "Hot work" is performed ( welding, soldering, etc) a "Fire watch" must be maintained. During work hours, and for a number of hours after the shift concludes, and the workers have left the site.

Woww 850 years old! Really sorry for french people 😥
It is amazing what can be accomplished through restoration.
It won't be restored, but will be rebuilt. You cannot restore what is no longer there, but you can rebuild or construct something similar.
This reminds me of hunchback of notre dame when the church sets on fire because of lava I think...
Don't worry France, rebuild it with a silver spire and roof will make it way more special than others.
@paul w Well I let the French people to decide.
paul w lol! Now,THAT would be interesting 😆
It would be a happy Cathedral, lol!
And still that orthodox church in New York burned down...
Speechless... The same feeling as on 11.09.2001.. Totally devastated...
What the same feeling as when thousands of people were murdered?
No, fortunately, nobody was killed. However, you can feel devastated not only when people die, but also when something significant for people's souls is destroyed. My feeling of devastation is as strong as it was in Septemer 2001. Hope now you are able to understand me.
Its a building. . .a building!
@@paradisebreeze1705 you are quite right! It's a building... But even stones if they are touched by souls of good-natured people and their creative hands can get 'alive'... Don't you think so?
It just shows we humans should not hold a grudge on the past. But live for the future

@Rose James Are you English? Because your reply was't....

The world isn't mourning over this. What about Venezuela
Ask the people who voted for Chavez and were happy for what Chavez gave them.
Fire cannot destroy this building credit the builders not the firefighters entirely they did heroic things but they did NOT save the building it saved itself we must not forget that.
????? Et la marmotte a mis le chocolat dans le papier !?!
I credit both the skill of the builders and also the firefighters. This would have been one of the hardest fires to fight for many firefighters, esp. for the ones of faith, but also the ones who love the French heritage of this beautiful monument to God. We can't take away their efforts either.

Listen closely to the difference between the two reporters, one trying to report a story, another simply doing damage control.
Do you mean the field reporter trying to pass it off as a mere accident, as if there weren't regulations on top of meticulous protocol to prevent such accidents?
I'd heard people saying this is also a month after the NZ mosque shooting and so it is.
Not just France destiny...all the people who have as much culture have felt a huge loss and we all feel the need to contribute a bit to the reconstruction of the Cathedral. But the shock at the sight of the flames that devour the cathedral will not forget quickly.
