I know exactly why Costco was popular when it opened its store in China. At the time, Swine flu hit China and this caused a shortage of pork. Not only that, during the time China increased tariffs on American Soybeans which are main feeds for pig farms. This exacerbated pork shortage in China and Costco advertised in the Chinese market of selling cheap and clean American pork so Chinese stormed Costco's first store in China when it opened.

I lived in China. There are *_three_* types of "name brand" products for sale there: 1. Actual products, that are made in China for the brand, but rejected by quality control as "seconds" and then sold in local stores (like Costco), or sometimes "out the back door" at the place of manufacture. 2. Product "over-runs" illegally made by the Chinese manufacturer on purpose to be sold on the black market. They are real products, made for the brand, but instead of making say 20,000 pieces as ordered by the brand, they will make 30,000. Then they sell the extras unbeknownst to the brand and pocket the money. 3. Actual, cheap-made knock-offs.
The reason is that they can buy a real designer brand and then they can copy them, so they can mass produce them for commercial reasons. They then sell them abroad. It’s an investment.
In China, there's more online shopping "holidays" than in person ones. Like 11.11 is singles day aka go on taobao and buy tons of stuff and then 8.13 which is another shopping "holiday". Also online shopping is way more popular. Like ACTUAL same day shipping (within 1-4hrs).
There's a good chance that a lot of those "designer" brands are knockoffs. Except maybe the Canada Goose jackets since you can get them even at Sears in America & Canada, and The Bay in Canada.
Idk about that. Besides the Birkin bags, all those luxury goods are pretty easy to come by. And there's usually a surplus of supply each year that designers let go at a discount (otherwise, it would just get destroyed to maintain the price). Costco is a very big & respected corporation, and they're actually very picky about what they allow in their stores. They already offer high end goods in their US stores, the selection just varies depending on the area. It’s 100% true that designer and “high-end” Brands don’t discount their products. But they will if China demands it. People in America and outside of China don’t realize how much Chinese people love to flex their money through designer brands. And since most high end brands aren’t even high quality more, they’ll willingly sell “discounted” products, even though they are definitely still making a profit due to how low quality their brands are and how much they are still selling them. Idk if you’ve ever seen any news of when American or non Chinese brands try to cross China, it never ends well for brands. Like just search up whenever China has boycott non Chinese brands, those brands instantly see losses and retract their statements within days. That’s how much money they get off of Chinese sales. Even the biggest brands will give up trying to boycott. Adidas tried boycotting Chinese wool and after Chinese social media bashed them and they started boycotting adidas, adidas even folded. It’s really weird how there’s been so many high cases of brands tryna to or accidentally offending China and they end up having massive losses. Basically, if China wants a brand to give discounts, the brand will give discounts.
Maybe the first couple of months, but to my knowledge cost co in China died out as soon as their initial deals were off, due to expensive membership fee and overall just expensive everything (in comparison to the regular market there, since inflation is not as bad on everyday supplies there).
