Can you elaborate on this question I had on a practice test: "A child and mother are grocery shopping. The child begins to scream and throw a tantrum until the mother gives the child a piece of candy. What type of reinforcement does this demonstrate?" Would this be positive reinforcement by mom? Or negative reinforcement by child? Thanks!!

Hi Dominic! That seems like it would be negative reinforcement, because the behavior of throwing a tantrum (negative) is being rewarded by being given candy. Positive reinforcement would be if the child was behaving so well that day (positive), the mother rewards him/her with a piece of candy.

@@TDCExamPrep Thank you! Sounds like I am on the right track! i'm sure you have a ton of ideas lined up for the next few youtube videos, but it would be awesome to have one for anxiety disorders and depressive disorders. I have listened to the DSM whats the difference a few times and still did pretty poorly on those in the practice tests through your site. Cant seem to figure out when it is MDD or GAD sometimes.
      Thanks again!

It’s positive reinforcement by mom and negative by child.

The example of a mother nagging her child so that he will do his chores is actually positive reinforcement. The mother is adding (positive) nagging to the situation in order for her son to increase the desired behavior (do chores). If the example is from the son's perspective, then the situation is positive punishment because the son is adding chores and mother is extinguishing behavior of nagging.

Hi Vanessa! Nagging would be negative reinforcement. The outcome is positive for the mother because her son does the chores, however the act of nagging is negative. I know I don't like to be nagged. Positive reinforcement would be if the son did his chores and his mother praised him for what a good job he did.

@@TDCExamPrep I think Vanessa is right. Maybe these questions would benefit from specifying whose perspective is being reflected. Otherwise they are all relative to the reader.

You have to look at it from the perspective of the individual who you want to perform the behavior. In this case is the child. If the child perceives nagging as something aversive, then when it is removed to increase a behavior it is negative reinforcement.
