I love that his accountant is named "Nick Voleur". "Nick", a slang term for stealing. "Voleur" the French word for "thief". Brilliant! I have watched this before, but somehow missed the above. Having finished it again ... this is one of the most brilliant comedies ever!

I watched this show for the first time a few months ago, and I came to realize immediately that these three people are essentially the voices in my own head.
I worked in a bookstore for seven years. It was my boss there, who can give Black a run for his misanthropic money and is proud of it, who brought me here! This Bernard Black would fit right in!
the concept of absorbing the little book of calm and adapting it's aura is so fucking genius. I grew up watching black books and It crowd and I couldn't fathom the creative absurdity of Graham Linehan. how does he do that? :D
17 years ago - A friend introduced me to Black Books. He had the series on DVD. And at the time I didn't find it that profoundly funny. I was 16 then. But watching it today with 16 years of accumulated life experience since when I first watched it, it's a god damn comedic masterpiece that I couldn't appreciate in my youth. How my friend saw that humour then is beyond me - he must be floating on a cloud of zen today - formed by a little book of calm - like Manny in this episode. His sense of humour was before his time.
"It's a TRICK!" I laughed so hard. Thank you. My husband is in the VA hospital, very, very ill. This was the first laugh I've had for days. Thank you so very much for uploading this.
been a fan of Moran's stand up for years now - had no idea about this. Perfect ending to this episode - ham sandwich with a pickle, witnesses running in fear of calm, and her *scream* finding out the manboob is just a lighter. brilliant
Been watching this episode for years and I am still noticing things about it. I can't believe there are still gems still hiding in this 23 minutes of television.
My husband and I have watched the series several times. All of the Actors and the writing are brilliant! Sad that the series was so short. If anyone needs to laugh, I suggest you watch it😁

I had never heard of this series or anyone involved in it, but I painted a scene from a Ramsey Campbell horror story and a friend told me the bookseller in the painting looked like Bernard Black. "Who's Bernard Black?" And thus my intro to one of the funniest shows I've ever seen. (And the guy DOES look like Bernard Black!)
I recommend this show to one girl I met on a train journey to Delhi, She said, all she was looking for in life is peace, & I recommend her this show, I hope she finds her book of calm someday🥰
The love of my life introduced me to this show. I'm very thankful to her and her very good taste. Even though she left me, every time I remember this show I also remember the most beautiful girl my eyes have seen.
re-assessing the whole series, and what an amazing opening episode this was. Getting to know the characters from the first second without it being done clumsily. Amazing. Oh, and no one plays a drunk or a hungover person like Dylan
Thank you for making this available and actually letting people watch it. Yes this is one of the better British Comedies, right up there with Father Ted.

I remember when privately owned book shops were actually like this.
Yup. Grumpy guy behind the desk in the corner who looks resentful when you ask him about a book and rises wearily as he's doing you a favour.
