I love that his accountant is named "Nick Voleur". "Nick", a slang term for stealing. "Voleur" the French word for "thief". Brilliant! I have watched this before, but somehow missed the above. Having finished it again ... this is one of the most brilliant comedies ever!

17 years ago - A friend introduced me to Black Books. He had the series on DVD. And at the time I didn't find it that profoundly funny. I was 16 then. But watching it today with 16 years of accumulated life experience since when I first watched it, it's a god damn comedic masterpiece that I couldn't appreciate in my youth. How my friend saw that humour then is beyond me - he must be floating on a cloud of zen today - formed by a little book of calm - like Manny in this episode. His sense of humour was before his time.

Thank you for making this available and actually letting people watch it. So many great shows aren't easily accessible, free or not, because some greedy bridge troll snatches up the copyright and sits on it until someone offers them a ridiculous amount for it. They don't care about whether anyone can enjoy it or not.

On rewatch, Fran has some religious icons, Greek or more likely Russian orthodox, for sale. And Bernard has a Moscow Book Fair poster in his shop.
What happened in Moscow stayed in Moscow?

I guess one thing we can look up to is the fact that he values reading and pure intentions. When the guy wanted those leather bound books for status, he said no (though yes, in a mocking manner).
