The Pearl Izumi Softshell Elite cycling jacket is not the warmest jacket in the brand's lineup, but it is the most versatile. From fabric that uses recycled coffee grounds to wick moisture and combat stink to paneled construction that allows for tons of flexibility without sacrificing wind resistance. This jacket is an all-around win and should be in your gear arsenal ASAP.

Good review. However, I would like you to consider how these tech. fabrics are cleaned when dirty. How well do they do on stain resistance if I spill my drink/food/oil. Hopefully you can include the information in future reviews/updates. Do they still perform as well after washing, multiple washing...Do they retain there shape, elasticity, water repelancy, or is there any shrinkage? How do the manufacturers recomend cleaning their jackets/clothes? Maybe they require dry cleaning or maybe they do not recomend any washing? I do not want to spend a chunk of money on something that does not perform as well after I wash it.

Andrew Mccubbine Fair points and thanks for the feedback. With regard to staining, etc - that's not really what we're aiming to review. We review the performance of a product from a functional standpoint so things like that would really only affect the way something looks. Also, we test things extensively over a period of (typically) at least 4 weeks so the assumption is there that it (in this case, the jacket) has been washed - you'd know otherwise because you could probably smell it across the entire planet if it weren't! In cases like that, if we notice no perceptible change in performance, fit or function over our testing period then we will not mention it. If it needs to be dry-cleaned, we'll tell you (or you can always check the product information which we link out to); if there was a product that recommended no washing that would be VERY out of the ordinary and we'd tell you; This is especially important to consider since, even without the extensive fabric testing you've suggested, this review clocks in at 17+ minutes.
      Thanks again for watching!

Great review!!! What is the difference between PEARL IZUMI ELITE SOFTSHELL JACKET and PEARL IZUMI ELITE SOFTSHELL LTD JACKET?

Washington Varela Thanks! We've not had the chance to try the LTD version but from what we can tell it's a bit more flexible with some elastane in the fabric and has a longer drop tail.

Very informative. As I am sure you know--gearing up is expensive but necessary. I am on a bit of a budget and am trying to get gear one piece at a time. If I am limited to two winter jackets--one for dry conditions and one for more wet--What would you recommend? What is the next warmest jacket from Pearl Izumi? Thanks.

+Heather Jeweler There really isn't much that warmer than this from PI. As for what to recommend, if you wear this under a wind/rain shell like this from Showers Pass (www.showerspass.com/products/womens-elite-21-jacket) you should be good to go with a solid base layer. How cold are you riding?
