    This is a jet-powered Formula 1 car.
    It’s one of the most outrageous race cars ever built-it didn’t have a normal engine; it used a jet. So when I heard it was at the Silverstone Museum, I had to go and see it.
    The Lotus 56 wasn’t just an experiment; it challenged the limits of what race cars could be, powered by a jet engine that nearly won the Indy 500, and shook up Formula 1.
    But how did they end up using a jet engine, how did it all work, and why was this radical car ultimately banned? Let’s dive into the story of the Lotus 56, a car so ahead of its time that racing couldn’t handle it.

    NOT a jet engine! The car wasn't powered by the exhaust from the turbine, but by a mechanical connection to the drive wheels, with the exhaust expelled from the large vent at the top of the engine - just like on a turboprop aircraft.

    Jet engines are still engines, even rocket engines are engines, even a steam engine is an engine.
    In fact a jet engine is more similar to a piston engine than it is to a rocket engine.
    You could theoretically replace just about any piston engine in a car or plane with a turboshaft or turboprop jet engine.

    • @TimRobertsen
      @TimRobertsen 2 часа назад

      A turbo-powered piston engine is like a turbine/jet engine with a piston engine between the compressor section and the turbine section :p

    • @notfunny3397
      @notfunny3397 2 часа назад +1

      @@TimRobertsen yeah the 2nd set of turbines in a regular turbjet engine is a bit like supercharger turbocharger hybrid
      It powers another set of turbines to compress and suck in more air, but the interesting thing is that it's powered by what is essentially exhaust gases but it still saps power because (in a regular turbojet engine) the exhaust gases are what push the plane forward essentially.
      So it's powered by exhaust gases but saps power. But obviously like a supercharger it helps the engine make more power to begin with.

    Gas turbine engines would go on to significant use in indoor motorsports like truck/tractor pulling and mud racing during the 80's.
    Art Arfons's legendary Green Monster 9200 pound unlimited tractor became so dominant that he voluntarily moved to the USHRA'S exhibition class after winning the championship in the 9200 pound class several times in a row.

    It's technically a turboshaft, the type of engine they use in turboprops and most modern helicopters.

  • @Tacko14
    @Tacko14 2 часа назад +1

    But it dóes generate thrust, doesn't it? It's still a jet engine.
    That Ferguson must've created some confusion of late. A Ferguson system was called FF, as in the Jensen. But us gamers, what we call an FF is front engined, frontwheel driven. Hm.

    • @karlbassett8485
      @karlbassett8485 Час назад

      Not really. A piston engine generates thrust if you count what comes out of the exhaust. It's just a tiny amount of thrust. A gas turbine engine powers a driveshaft, like turboprop planes, and the thrust from the exhaust is tiny.

      11:08 - litres

      @@weevilinabox I was talking about the subtitles being on just the one guy; I wasn't reading them because I could understand him just fine. *edit - liters isn't misspelled for an American, but yes, that's the wrong use of breaking vs braking.

    • @weevilinabox
      @weevilinabox 57 минут назад

      @@PerfectTangent I was agreeing that they were unnecessary. I could understand subtitling someone with a heavy accent that non-Brits might struggle to understand, but that was absolutely not the case here.
      As for "litre", the I've never understood why US spelling of this particular word differs from that used by the rest of the world. I think I understand some reasons for the differences in the spelling of words which pre-date the European colonisation of north America, but surely "litre" post-dates that, so why not spell this new word the same way as everyone else? I'm not being snarky, btw: I'm genuinely intrigued. Was it done simply to align with similar, pre-existing words, e.g. fiber (which Brits spell "fibre"). Does American spelling include any "-re" endings?

Why hasnt anyone pulled an Elon and made a league for creative, non corporate innovators ?
