This is a jet-powered Formula 1 car.
It’s one of the most outrageous race cars ever built-it didn’t have a normal engine; it used a jet. So when I heard it was at the Silverstone Museum, I had to go and see it.
The Lotus 56 wasn’t just an experiment; it challenged the limits of what race cars could be, powered by a jet engine that nearly won the Indy 500, and shook up Formula 1.
But how did they end up using a jet engine, how did it all work, and why was this radical car ultimately banned? Let’s dive into the story of the Lotus 56, a car so ahead of its time that racing couldn’t handle it.

NOT a jet engine! The car wasn't powered by the exhaust from the turbine, but by a mechanical connection to the drive wheels, with the exhaust expelled from the large vent at the top of the engine - just like on a turboprop aircraft.
The variety of F1 cars from that time was absolutely unmatched... It's a shame we will never see such creativity again.
Turbine engines are still the main power source for the H1 Unlimited Hydroplane racing series
Josh Revell made a video on this 5 days ago, it spread like wildfire
something tells me mr mansell knew
Well, since this guy got up close to the car, this might be a more detailed explanation of the josh revell video
Pure coincidence, actually. There's no way we can turn a video around in that time.
Absolutely I'm just busting your balls:-) love your content!! @@Driver61
Rosh Jevell doesn't hold a lap record at Brands Hatch though.
The 56 developed into the 72 and became a world beater and McLaren took the concept in the MP series.
Yo when you and redbull driving upside down again?
Can't wait for your next upload!
I would
Jet engines are still engines, even rocket engines are engines, even a steam engine is an engine.
In fact a jet engine is more similar to a piston engine than it is to a rocket engine.
You could theoretically replace just about any piston engine in a car or plane with a turboshaft or turboprop jet engine.
A turbo-powered piston engine is like a turbine/jet engine with a piston engine between the compressor section and the turbine section :p
@@TimRobertsen yeah the 2nd set of turbines in a regular turbjet engine is a bit like supercharger turbocharger hybrid
It powers another set of turbines to compress and suck in more air, but the interesting thing is that it's powered by what is essentially exhaust gases but it still saps power because (in a regular turbojet engine) the exhaust gases are what push the plane forward essentially.
So it's powered by exhaust gases but saps power. But obviously like a supercharger it helps the engine make more power to begin with.
Gas turbine engines would go on to significant use in indoor motorsports like truck/tractor pulling and mud racing during the 80's.
Art Arfons's legendary Green Monster 9200 pound unlimited tractor became so dominant that he voluntarily moved to the USHRA'S exhibition class after winning the championship in the 9200 pound class several times in a row.
It's technically a turboshaft, the type of engine they use in turboprops and most modern helicopters.
But it dóes generate thrust, doesn't it? It's still a jet engine.
That Ferguson must've created some confusion of late. A Ferguson system was called FF, as in the Jensen. But us gamers, what we call an FF is front engined, frontwheel driven. Hm.
Not really. A piston engine generates thrust if you count what comes out of the exhaust. It's just a tiny amount of thrust. A gas turbine engine powers a driveshaft, like turboprop planes, and the thrust from the exhaust is tiny.
Im tuning my guitar rn
Does this have to do with the video?
@@LorenzoCorrado19 I think so
I made my Pinewood Derby car in Cub Scouts to look like the Lotus 56. I didn't paint it orange though. I didn't get past the 2nd round, not enough weight.
Much better then as you did not have cars that looked like clones, although the safety was not there , but with materials today it would have been a lot better and more entertaining .
Imagine the fuel consumption?
Scott- you seem to have found the most pedantic audience on YT. Congratulations and condolences.
What if a gas turbine mated with a cvt where the turbine is at a near constant speed and just change the ratio as needed?
May be if allowed, the turbine engine would gone through a similar set of innovations as the ICE over the course of history.
An unreliable Lotus?
Any updates on the driving upside down experiment?????

...and he said exactly that, just seconds after I had typed this. 😂
but whats the difference between the lotus 56b and the lotus 56
the 56b is the 56 but with Wings fitted for f1 to gain downforce.
@@SimonBauer7 oh ok
Are jets not engines?
It had a jet engine*
What happened to project invention
fascinating
Those subtitles are kind of insulting.
Entirely unnecessary and occasionally misspelt.
11:08 - litres
14:11 - braking
I'd expect better from an engineering-focused motorsport channel.
For me, it detracts from the informative content.
@@weevilinabox I was talking about the subtitles being on just the one guy; I wasn't reading them because I could understand him just fine. *edit - liters isn't misspelled for an American, but yes, that's the wrong use of breaking vs braking.
@@PerfectTangent I was agreeing that they were unnecessary. I could understand subtitling someone with a heavy accent that non-Brits might struggle to understand, but that was absolutely not the case here.
As for "litre", the I've never understood why US spelling of this particular word differs from that used by the rest of the world. I think I understand some reasons for the differences in the spelling of words which pre-date the European colonisation of north America, but surely "litre" post-dates that, so why not spell this new word the same way as everyone else? I'm not being snarky, btw: I'm genuinely intrigued. Was it done simply to align with similar, pre-existing words, e.g. fiber (which Brits spell "fibre"). Does American spelling include any "-re" endings?
WTF is with the subtitles ...like yas are speaking a different language? ....

Is this the car you were going to drive upside down?
Lost 'SOME' creativity ?? How about ALL ? Its an engineers sport for the entertainment of rich narcissists now.. Exactly why I dont care about modern racing at all. Even Formula E is just as BORING. All cars are virtually identical and you cant even see the beauty of the (conformity) designs due to all the sponsor logos. Why hasnt anyone pulled an Elon and made a league for creative, non corporate innovators ?
