Our daughter, Anaya, having a conversation with the taxi driver on our way home. This video was taken 4 years ago when Anaya was 6 years old. She moved to Korea when she was 1 almost 2.
A question often asked about this video:
Why is "black" in the title? Why does her skin color matter?
Representation matters. Little black girls around the world need to see positive examples of themselves. The media often portrays us negatively. Allowing little black girls an opportunity to see themselves in a positive way helps boost their self-esteem and shows them that they can accomplish anything, even when the world tells them they can't. There is nothing racist about the title. The overall intention of the video is to inspire other little girls of color that living abroad and learning more than one language is possible. If you are not Black, you have no right to question if this video is "racist." How is this video systematically oppressing you?
And to those who suggest I change the title of the video. It is obvious that the title persuaded you to click and watch it. You were curious about the "little black girl" and questioned her ability.
Reasons why this video is AWESOME!
-Korean is one of the top 3 hardest languages for English speakers to learn.
-There are many benefits to raising children that speak more than one language. Children that speak another language have overall better analytical, social, and academic skills than their monolingual peers.
We put this video up as a way to show the benefits of raising your children abroad. This is meant to be a positive video to promote awareness that black people are traveling the world and our children are the products of our travels. We want to encourage others that it is possible!
Korea is a very homogeneous society, meaning Korea is made up mostly of Koreans. The likelihood of a school having a foreign child is very slim. Foreigners account for only 3 percent of the Korean population. Minorities in the U.S account for 30%. There are more people in the world that speak English. This is due to colonialism.
English is more widely spoken around the world by over 340 million people, and Korean is spoken by only 70 million. Korean is a difficult language to speak and there's not a large percentage of people outside of Koreans that speak it. Anyone that has ever tried to learn Korean can understand this and why this video is special.
A black girl growing up and going to school in Korea is rare, let alone knowing how to speak the language. Just because a child lives in a country doesn't automatically mean that she will speak the language. There are people who live abroad and their children don't attend the local schools.
She is existing and living in a culture that is completely different from her own, which is something to be celebrated considering all the negative images that are displayed in the media for black children.
She is a child and just because you can't see the beauty in this video doesn't mean it is not amazing. Don't knock others or spread negativity, especially towards a child for possessing a skill that you may not be able to do yourself.
