Back when NFL football was a totally different ball game than today. Look at the protective coverage of their QB!!! And damn, for a tall guy, Butch Johnson had some speed!
If not for drew pearson and tony hill, butch johnson would have been a starter there and any where else. He would have been a excellent 3rd slot receiver but offenses did not run that back then.
Awesome. Butch Johnson was my favorite player back then, and all because of the California Quake. The one at 2:00 still cracks me up, as I recall that was right after Tom Landry told him to stop doing the Quake and he teased doing it anyway. Broke my heart when he left to go to Denver.
Johnson was just as talented as Drew Pearson and Tony Hill. The only problem Landry played favorites with Pearson, so Johnson was never really allowed to display his athleticism and hands on a full-time basis.
@@MENFUSSMIKE The California Quake was his thing because he was a California kid, born and raised in LA and he played college ball for UC Riverside. Who he was and where he was from didn't change just because he happened to be temporarily playing for Dallas.
Best"Clutch" hands in Cowboy History. 1. Drew Pearson, Mark Witten, 3. Preston Pearson, ( yes PP had great hands) 4. Butch Johnson. All four got that Clutch catch not only for touchdowns but for FIRSTDOWNS. Am I lyin?
Was butch johnson a starter in denver? Not sure about that catch in the superbowl being a toutchdown had control but ball came out on the way down might have over turn ruling today with every touchdown reviewed.
Butch Johnson was a arrogant self centered jerk in my opinion. He fit the personality of the Cowboys back in the day rubbing it in opponent's faces. One game I remember was against the Redskins when their defense scored a touchdown and the Redskins were doing an endzone celebration and "Crybaby Butch" barged in the middle of it and threw a hissy fit. Butch could dish it out plenty but couldn't take it. "Boo Hoo Hoo".
Butch did not break up the fun bunch celebration that was Dennis Thurman and Everson Walls I believe. Butch wouldn't have even been on the field because the fun bunch was the Redskins WR's/TE's.
Iconic celebration I remember as a kid the six shooters and the quake

Thanks so much for this!!!!! One of my favorite Cowboys!!!! California Quake, the greatest touchdown dance ever!!!!

He was traded to the Oilers first and then he got himself traded by playing poorly on purpose. Dallas never sent him to Denver.
Defined an era....
Outstanding Gentleman, Michael Mccolly Butch Johnson!😉
Loved watching him play every weekend in Dallas. Butch=FUN
California quake was also known as texas tremor.
So I was not misrembering. I thought so. Makes much more sense than California Quake considering where he was playing

By the rules of the 70s, if you had possession of the ball in the end zone even for a microsecond, it's a td and the play is over.
He had a broken thumb during that game I believe

@@TD-ke4vd I think it was Michael Downs & Dennis Thurman.
Why are you here then? This is for the fans. I know your review is a year old but you're probably still lurking around and hating on my Cowboys.
