Fiddler was the very first movie musical I ever saw, appropriate for a young Jewish girl. Since then, the show and Topol has meant so much to me and my family. He was perfect for the role and will always be my Tevye. May his memory be a blessing
I turned on the TV as a 7 year old after everyone was long asleep and inches from the TV tube I watched Fiddler! That was 60 years ago.,feels like yesterday…goddam
I always thought Topol was the better Tevye, maybe it just because the movie was the first time I saw it performed, also from what I have read of the books Topol gives the character more of the gravitas the books seem to indicate. But that could just be the impression I get from only being able to read translations and not the original works. However I could never imagine anyone better than Zero Mostel in the role of Pseudolus in "a funny thing happened on the way to the forum"
It is impossible not to like this great song and not to be in awe of Chaim Topol! Rest in peace, great man.
