That’s terrible news, I’m so sorry. Thank goodness you checked it yourselves! I can never understand the discussions about the bottom of the boat and whether to black or not due to it being fully submerged, so it shouldn’t deteriorate if there’s no oxygen or something! Clearly I’m already confused! You’ve clearly done a good job so fingers crossed you’ve caught it in time. I loved that your pick me up was a G&T and Sewing Bee, a perfect night 😁. We’re away in our van touring Somerset, Devon and Cornwall for five weeks. Last week we parked next to a lovely couple from Lincoln and Sandra loves to quilt and I mentioned I’m doing a English paper piece quilted cushion. She said she also loved quilting and so kindle gave me some information on the quilters guild. I googled her and wow! Her work is unbelievable. She is Sandra Goldsborough and if you google her with quilter you will see her miniature work, what a wonderful artist she is and a genuinely lovely person. Anyway, thanks for sharing another video, it’s bad news but always nice to see what you’re up to. Shell’s sign writing is amazing BTW, I’ve already seen it on FB or Instagram. 😊
At least Chris you have found the issue before it was catastrophic. I'd wished I had found facilities to lift my boat up enough to paint and survey the complete hull. DIY painted our boat last year. Will do any DIY paint job next year and lift the boat up. Love to you all.
Hey Steve, Yeah I was thinking while I was under there checking, checking and checking again that I had removed the corrosion and covered in both coats of the epoxy, would someone I've paid to do this be as thorough? If you can get to somewhere that leaves you high enough to check and treat the base, do it is definitely our advise. xxx
You two are awesome! Chris, I watched you work so hard on your hull. Shell, you supported your hubs hard work with such love. I wish you two the very best in all your ventures! Take care 😊
Mika does. It’s evident that you to understand the realities of your situation and have set about to make it the best possible outcome this year. Plus you have a plan for the future. I think that’s all ace! See y’all again soon from over here in Portland, Oregon.
That's a tough week.. hopefully a bit of reflective time will put it into context.. if you really are thinking long term(10/15years plus) for boatland grit blasting and epoxy two pack is the way to go for maximum hull protection. Much love to you guys..
Oh gosh what a shock re the hull but thank goodness as you said that you are addressing it now rather than later - I felt your heart sink when you broke the news to us - please take care and always know that what comes in one day there is another thou sometimes its gloomy there are those good times that out shine 100 times more cheers Debz from Oz
Thanks Debz, it was a shock but getting solid advice and having a plan in place has eased any of that stress to be honest. It’s actually more a feeling of being empowered now…. And just getting on with it! 🤞😬😊💚
chris just think of those summer days when your motoring through some loverly canal with a cold beer in hand...chin up mate hope it's all good news from now on
Ouch! Least you have got to it. You do seem to have a lot of pitting on the sides of your boat too. Do you have sacrificial anodes? I believe you can get them put on the base plate as well. Won't stop rust but because of the poor steel, it could be more subceptable to electrolysis. Not that I know but a thought to query the (hopefully) experts with.
Thanks Glen, yes all options are open and will be decided upon in a year when we come out again. We’ve got expert advice in the team at the dry dock…. I’m confident that in a year we will have the best solution in place x
When i bought my boat i knew it would probably need over plating. When i had the survey it did need it. That was 2 years ago and its been over plated amd blacked but the safety certificate ran out so now im waiting for the work to be carried out begore i can get back on it. Itz gutting but got to be patient.
Keep smilin', keep shinin' Knowin' you can always count on paint for sure That's what boats are for For good times and bad times I'll paint your side forevermore That's what boats are for
Hi Chris So do you think that the front end of your base plate is good steel and the rear is made from foreign steel ? also what thickness is it 8 mm or 10 mm as this also would be a concern. Cheers
Hey Peter, the primer was Jotun jotamastic 90 alum and the black coat was Jotun Pioner TC. We didn’t grit blast as the power wash got pretty much everything off. I did grind off the bits inside the craters. Are you having to do the something similar? Good Luck if you are
Sorry for your findings. Another viewer has made a similar comment, but I am keen to know why some people only black the sides and not the base plate? Does the surveyor check the base plate? What would be the cost of a new base plate on your boat?
The surveyor should check the baseplate. It all depends on where you take your boat out, some places don't have enough height to check. I'm confident ours wasn't checked properly at point of sale.... Unfortunately x
That is looking pretty bad, personally if it comes to it would be better to hog out the craters to good steel and filling with weld then buffing flat would be a better option as the over all balance of the boat would not change where as a new plate on just the rear would add a load of extra weight that could effect handling and would cause the stern to sink lower a new plate section for the rear would probably be in the range of half a ton. One other thing i have seen many start to do and that is add 6 anodes to the base plate to help prevent base plate deterioration
All solid advice, filling with weld is definitely one of the options. All options will be discussed in a years time. We are good now until then…. We know what we’re dealing with and that ironically has stopped the worry! Thank you… 😊
It is bad news for sure but don't they say forewarned is forearmed? It's better to know so you can make plans to deal with it. Sad that it needs done though.
I feel we are on top of it now though. It stresses me to think we could have given it to someone to do for us and they would have only done the sides!!!! Thank goodness we did it ourselves xxx
The Narrowboat that James Built, knows all about the importance of getting a new base plate fitted, asap. Wishing you both well,
A few people have mentioned James issues. Thank you xxx

Tough news to hear...I'm sure you'll get through it with your hard work ethic...best wishes guys
Thanks Andrew, appreciate that 💚😊
So sorry your having a rough spot. What you have done look really good.
Thank you Mary. We are tackling it all with positivity xxx

Thanks Lynette, we do feel empowered even with the bad news.... xxx
Ahh people that must have been truly stressful, but you have done it,,,and kept your sanity!! Well done and wishing you both well..........
Thank you Ian, it was a challenge..... but feel we are on top of the issue now... xxx
You can also weld slimline anodes onto the baseplate …. The more the better I guess at this stage
Looks like Shell's gonna do you proud there with her sign!
spoiler, it looks awesome... You can see it on out Instagram @thenarrowboatchronicles xxx
Wow. I see some cutting and welding in your future. May all your time on the canals be buoyant.
afloat is base requirement always! ;) xxx

We will definitely be using epoxy from now on! We will determine best course of action next year. I'm confident we've done what we can for now.... xxx

Spray the Hull with zinc and epoxy it.
Hug.

Just dealing with it, and getting it done is the only way….. x
Looks like electrolysis rather than corrosion. Mbe fitting a galvanic isolator would help. Best of luck. G n T always helps.
Dang thats a blow 😢 Was the survey being done down to boat age or did you suspect issues below ?
It was the 5 year hull survey, so our insurance is valid. It was a upsetting at the time but we are on top of it now…. 😬😅😊
Keep smilin', keep shinin'

Yes first 2/3rds look ok…. Not sure it’s foreign steel just poor steel. Good thing is it’s not all of the base! Thickness is 10mm thankfully 😅
Noticed you haven't got any anodes on the back of your boat. Could that have contributed to the corrosion on the base plate? Good luck with it
There’s two Andrew…. Definitely not that… 🤔
Hi guys did you get the hull grit blasted? What was the primer used? What type of Jotun was used.
Hey Peter, the primer was Jotun jotamastic 90 alum and the black coat was Jotun Pioner TC. We didn’t grit blast as the power wash got pretty much everything off. I did grind off the bits inside the craters.
Are you having to do the something similar?
Good Luck if you are
Sorry you found you have a problem with your base plate 😊hope it all turns out well 😊
Thank you xxx

Yes, that would be frustrating. I can't imagine not checking everything because the bottom is just as important as the sides.
Easy tiger this isn’t that bad just come as a shock to you. Anything can be sorted 😊
You can't stop the bottom plate corroding you can only slow it down any paint is going to get rubbed off anyway .
Never seen any anodes you have them?
There a waste of time
@@TOECUTTER200don't be daft, they are essential.
We do have 4 but as Mike says, our Surveyor said pretty much the same, waste of time....
