I have to comment that this has been my favorite luxury review of all time. For €12,000, standing waiting at the station for 90 minutes, food that was just okay, and a cabin that small, it is certainly not worth the cost. Many reviewers I’ve seen on the orient express seem to have been gifted a suite or other high level cabin and then do nothing but gush about the experience. This has been eye-opening to me and has changed how I view this train. Please keep it up!
Alexander - love how you always shout out the staff in your videos. I worked as a server for many years and it's a tough tough job, very unforgiving. I remember having to show up to work one time when I had food poisoning because the managers wouldn't let me request off - normally I was very good at my job and friendly too! But not that night, haha. I work a cushy corporate job now, but a part of me will always be a server. Love to see that you always have grace and appreciation for the industry folk
I love Alex for his positive attitude, if I were to pay 12k for this I would be more than very disappointed (I think that he was too),but the way he presents it with such a understanding is unreal to me. Great episode and shot out to the people from Orient Express, keep doing what you’re doing and always try to be better, if Alexander liked you why shouldn’t I😊
That’s a great review, well done Alexander. I love the comparison between the two travel types and of course, your patience for the newbies and praising the REAL people who actually made your journey better!
I'm surprised you paid 12000 euro. Your Historic Cabin from Florence to Paris is available for around 8000 euro for two passengers already. Maybe have a chat with your travel agent (also about compensation for the delay, I know Orient Express is very lenient with their customer service).
I'm pretty sure the VSOE uses dynamic pricing for reservations, so the E8,000 price could increase if you booked a popular trip last minute. In addition I noticed he paid for the extra Breakfast in the Dining Car. I can't remember the exact price, but let's say it was an additional E120 each. It's not cheap. They could have also had Caviar at lunch or dinner which is around E650 per person per meal. He and his wife had a E600 bottle of wine for lunch. You can see the price in the Wine Menu of the Grand Cru they ordered. I also saw the Krug being poured. Krug and several drinks - he said he was in the Bar Car until the Early hours - would add up. Plus tips or Service Charges. I can see how he could easily have got up to E12,000.
@@gilbydog7350 I also think why vsoe maintained the mostly small cabin size throughout the years not only for more passenger capacity, but to add profit from the bar. Very nice video, and honestly it seems to be the reflection of so many other people's experiences. Alas, if you want to experience a truly remarkable train journey I can not recommend enough times the journey proposed by Rovos Rails that spans from Cape Town to Dar-Es-Salaam. An truly magical experience spanning two weeks that takes you through a myriad of landscapes for a price, albeit expensive, yet relatively inexpensive compared to the duration and to that of the Orient Express.
Love that you reviewed this. I have to say my wish to go on the Orient one day was tapered by your findings. lol. Wish you could explore Viking Antartica Cruises as well. I hear it's a great experience and another one of my dreams to experience.
I feel like that's the strategy of Orient Express. They tend to do smaller cabins so that costumers will go to the bar and buy something😂 12k euros is just too much
Happy new year , Alexander , to you and your family ! Wow ! You take most of us into places we can only dream of ! Well, looks like the Orient Express only comes alive when there's a mysterious murder . Thank God for the bar ! That's where all the best people hang out - including the murderer . Anyway. If you change your mind about not going back , make sure Monsieur Poirot is on the train . We can't have the world's greatest food critic and guide go missing like Agatha Christie . Thanks for another fine video !
Love how your sport coat and turtleneck matched perfectly with your pocket square! To me that was better/most interesting than most of your experience on that train!
Food is so subjective, if people are not used to Michelin star restaurant quality, then the orient express will seem a step up from going to McDonald’s. Plus, €12,000 seems to be a tad high for what you actually get. I’m sure I’ve seen cabin prices and service cheaper !!
I've seen a video of a passage on the once a year run that goes all the way to Constantinople. There's a much larger cabin on that, but booking that is well over 100,000 Euros and you still don't get a shower. If you're lucky the air conditioner works. Essentially, you are seeing what passed for luxury back when the route was relevant. Modern construction/materials allow a lot more amenities in modern trains. I think the price for a one night trip is ridiculous, but people apparently pay it.
I have a great suggestion. If you are pivoting to different experiences like this, (ie a travel mode with food), may I suggest a cruise ship ie Virgin Voyages. You could hire the Rockstar cabin and experience all the apparently highly rated restaurants inside it. They say that Virgin has the best food out of all the cruises so would be great to see your take on it. And best of all, they have Krug on board! :D
Thank you for such a fine travel video review. The concept of 'class' might be unpopular these days, but I don't care - you definitely have it, compared to the other people who post these types of videos. They look and sound as though they don't belong there and wouldn't know what they are experiencing anyway. I hope you reconsider your stance on never travelling on Orient Express again - I'm curious as to how you would feel about the larger state rooms, or about the new art deco decor in some of the newer train cars. I'll keep an eye out for your other videos. Thanks again!
Right. They've priced their product much too high. One question. Since everyone probably couldn't stifle themselves in their cabins after dinner, did the Bar car have enough seating for everyone or was that a problem too?
I believe you used pictures in the beginning from the Accor Orient Express which will start rolling out this year. I think it is going to be better than the Venice Simplon.
$0 or so years ago, we took the VSOE from London to Paris, and a couple of years later did the reverse journey. The Pullman carriages in the UK were comfortable and the food good quality. The Wagon Lit carriages in Europe were good for day travel, but I'd not want to sleep in one. The bed would probably have been comfortable enough, but you had to go to the end of the carriage to use the wc. No shower provided. By contrast, the Indian Pacific we took a couple of times from Adelaide to Sydney gave private shower and wc to each double room; single rooms had their own wc, but no shower. We were fortunate in our Paris-London journey. There was a severe storm in the Channel, and our journey was changed from one port to another at each end. We did not have to worry about that, all the changes being managed by the VSOE staff.
Love the channel, keep on doing what you are doing! Always thought about going on the Orient Express once, but think I will instead try the Japanese or Indian Luxury trains which seem to be a far superior experience.
Alexander! I noticed, on the plate to your right… Invisalign! Are you currently going through treatment? I too often forget my case and have to awkwardly guard my little retainer tissue..
In 1968 Mr Fielding and I took the Orient Express to Sarajevo. First class. There was no seating available. There were chickens and baskets of smelly food. We could sit on our luggage or hold it on our heads.
12,000 Euro for a piano man and a bad back. I have been considering the OE as a "Bucket List" experience. I would put up with your grievances if I could smoke a cigar in the smoking car, if there was a smoking car, or on the balcony of the very last car... watching the world fade away behind me or rather, in front of me. Your experience is very disappointing. Things are not what they used to be. Thank you and your wife for the OE experience and review.
3:28 The ceiling fan is wobbly. For 12,000 Euro a night, even something like that would annoy me. Like, I noticed it straight away through a video, surely the staff have seen it too, but just couldn't be bothered tightening it in between trips. It would take 5 minutes to fix.
How many 3 Michelin star restaurants could you have gone to for that much? I try not to think of price when watching your videos but that is a lot of money. That is a very nice holiday for 2 worth of money.
As someone used to trains not being late (in Japan), having to wait for more than an hour after paying 12000€ is absolutely ridiculous! Definitely not worth it.
What a shame. Sleeper trains fascinate me and I've loved the few I've been on. Amtrak trains in the US are a fraction of this price with large rooms, incredible views, simple but good dining in panoramic cars.
I live in France, and train are delayed really, reaaaaally frequently. Doesn't excuse anything, just from my point of view it looked like a normal everyday thing.
"We also tried the scrambled eggs with caviar." 😮 "Maybe some water was left on the plate from the dishwasher and it moistened the eggs, but it wasnt that bad." 💀 *shade delivered K.O.*
It feels like a 100 Euro Trip. Only the bar feels like 250. So make it 350 per Person and you are good to go with 700 real value ;) 12k is ridicilous though.
I took the overnight train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai and had some very good noodles and Singha beers in an A/C Pullman car for $15. Beds a bit small but cool to see both the city and countryside
Great review! ... I am happy to scratch this train off my bucket list! Also, the classic thing I noticed ... Batard on the list 2018, the one you got 2019 ... just HOW HARD is it to update the damn list for 12k eur per person. And the wines, all of them, plus the bar, should be free and ad libitum for 12k. I would 100 times over rather go to say 3 Michelins and give it hell with wine and still be under 4k per person.
I was on the board of that train around 20 years ago. ( Just for a quick visit) not asa customer. The food is prepared out of the train and they just heat it there, the kitchen are so tiny that is almost a miracle to plate nice dishes. The delay doesn't depend on the train company, but the "Trenitalia". Of course they should have announced you, and/or apologised with a Krug bottle in your room. I think Alexander is too young and restless to travel on such a train. Those trips are for old people who are retired and have plenty of time. The water in the scrambled egg dish may be the steam from the condensation(i suppose the plate had a cloche) to keep it warm. I new two gentlemen who worked on that train years ago and yes they were available for their customers 24 hours, as Alexander mentioned an immense work and attention to details. I like the way Alexander lived this experience with philosophy and understood that it isn't for him.
For that price, this "piece of history" needs some updating. With no lounge for waiting at the station, they could at least have refreshments available. The cabins could be made more comfortable and showers added without destroying the historic ambiance. For the food, perhaps they should have a less challenging menu but do it well. As pointed out, some airlines serve an elegant first-class meal with more limited space for food prep. At least the staff earned mostly high grades. There are some experiences that are worth having once but never again, and I guess this is one of them.
For 12k with ok food, small cabin and not to mention the 1 and a half delay is not that worth it, even if you have money to spare. Maybe for the experience but idk something's just not right
If being on a gorgeous train is the goal fly business class to Cusco in Peru and take the luxury train to Machu Pichu. My guess is it will be about the same price all in and the experience is MUCH more magical.
In France, an O.E. fan bought many sleeping cars dieing in Poland some years ago and he restored them.... An association works for restoring this mythical train....
The cost Alexander gave for the cost of this trip seems off. I looked it up on the vsoe site and and he exaggerated the price. If he paid any attention to his reservation very few compartments have their own showers and toilets. He spent money like it was water it was and didn't investigate at all. The orient express was lovely. I saved money to do it. Why didn't he take a shower on the plane ?
You can get the grand suite for the whole 5-day trip from Paris to Istanbul for like 14k. Either he got massively scammed or is massively overblowing what he actually paid.
This is in desperate need of modernization. For example the train in japan that does luxury. Is amazing. It takes the old lines going through countryside. And food is to fit the region of the area.
While train delays can be something truly out of their control, the lack of "support" on the platform is unforgivable as the size of their cabins and the hard chicken. What a shame!
I have to comment that this has been my favorite luxury review of all time. For €12,000, standing waiting at the station for 90 minutes, food that was just okay, and a cabin that small, it is certainly not worth the cost.

Love that you reviewed this. I have to say my wish to go on the Orient one day was tapered by your findings. lol. Wish you could explore Viking Antartica Cruises as well. I hear it's a great experience and another one of my dreams to experience.
This is a great example of luxury 100 years ago versus luxury today.
I have seen quite some reviews of the train, focussing on the positive aspects. You were honest and criticised what needed to be criticised. Thank you
I feel like that's the strategy of Orient Express. They tend to do smaller cabins so that costumers will go to the bar and buy something😂 12k euros is just too much
True, there is not a lot you can do in that tiny space. The small cabins mean that they can fit more passengers on each train too.
Thanks for another fine video !
i like your vids, you give good critism while not condemning stuff that are new.
I enjoy the fairness yet your expirience .
Love how your sport coat and turtleneck matched perfectly with your pocket square! To me that was better/most interesting than most of your experience on that train!
You love that? Or you like it?
Did you do the Emirates first class review? I'm more interested in that, compared to this lukewarm Orient Express experience :)
Thanks for the honesty. Great review!
You definitely got overcharged. I've taken the Orient Express a few times, and none of the routes are €12.000 for 1 night.
As a Murder on the Orient Express lover, I loved this review so much! Thank you for sharing your experience with us!
Been dying for you to do this one, Alexander. haven't watched it yet but I know it's going to be one of my favorite ones! Watching now...
12,000 is a joke. Ripping people off due to its legendary name.
I like the subtle dig to Italy when the train was delayed..."You know that we are not in Japan anymore"
Hey Alexander, Big fan of your honest and rich content.
Love the honest review yet still kept in a gentlemanish tone.
You love that? I appreciate it but love....
Right. They've priced their product much too high.
One question. Since everyone probably couldn't stifle themselves in their cabins after dinner, did the Bar car have enough seating for everyone or was that a problem too?
"I can't do this". I've never heard you that disappointed, understandably so. Nevertheless that moment had me laughing out loud
I believe you used pictures in the beginning from the Accor Orient Express which will start rolling out this year. I think it is going to be better than the Venice Simplon.
Shocking how bad that is for 12‘000€
However thank you for your honest review. Love your videos
I waited too long for this next video. love this channel.
You are best Chanel for this hands DOWN.....very good
Jó vidi Sanyi, csak így tovább!!
For 12.000 thats actually to small of a room. For this price they could afford to make 1 less room and expand others i think. Great video anyways!

The ceiling fan is wobbly.
I really hope you'll do a video about Le Pierre Gagnaire. It is maybe my best experience so far (will do Plénitude this year to compare)
I live in France, and train are delayed really, reaaaaally frequently. Doesn't excuse anything, just from my point of view it looked like a normal everyday thing.
Great review! What did the wifey think of the trip?
"We also tried the scrambled eggs with caviar." 😮 "Maybe some water was left on the plate from the dishwasher and it moistened the eggs, but it wasnt that bad." 💀 *shade delivered K.O.*
Another reminder that comfort and luxury are not synonymous.
It feels like a 100 Euro Trip. Only the bar feels like 250. So make it 350 per Person and you are good to go with 700 real value ;) 12k is ridicilous though.
Alexander you need to do a video about Emirates!! Great work as always
I took the overnight train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai and had some very good noodles and Singha beers in an A/C Pullman car for $15.
Beds a bit small but cool to see both the city and countryside
I appreciate your honesty, thank you!
0:22 why are the diagrams of the train cabins blurred out?
I know it’s not a Michelin star restaurant but could you review commander’s palace in New Orleans. I think it would be interesting. Thank you.
You are so discerning, Mater Alex.
i agree the orient express is overpaid for what you get ! better enjoy good restaurants with chefs and staff with passion .
This is in desperate need of modernization. For example the train in japan that does luxury. Is amazing. It takes the old lines going through countryside. And food is to fit the region of the area.
Hahaha, you made me laugh by your comments. But that cabin ... Oh my ... 🙈🙈🙈
While train delays can be something truly out of their control, the lack of "support" on the platform is unforgivable as the size of their cabins and the hard chicken. What a shame!
