Do my eyes and ears deceive me? A guitar teacher who doesn't blaze through the scale and make every one who is trying to learn feel like it is impossible. Someone who remembers what it is like when you're just starting to expand on your playing? WOW! This is why Darrell is the most relatable guitar instructor online.
Kevin O'Rourke
It's nice because he isn't just trying to show off. He is able to teach at the level of the person watching which is very helpful.
Totally agree! I sat in last 3 weeks in front of my teacher. He's keep sayin I don't have the grab. He's playing backtracks and tell: doi it. Sound terrible. Just scaling, no rythm ,no feeling. Then, he just take guitar and nail the thing. "Wow, nice!". Then, I sat that video on thursday. Today I take the guitar and put it on practice and I feel really nice doing... Nothing lol. But it starts to seem that I going somewhere. I'd have fun for 40 minutes just repeating over and over the back track. In fact, I moved to 4 shapes in Am scale, all bc felt confident. Really the best video on YT for the just beginnera.
Hopefully this lesson will help you guys get your jam on!
Enjoy :)
It did thanks man
Great lesson ! Your tips on phrasing definitely helped. I know the scales but when I played them over a backing track alot of the time they just sounded like random notes and didn't sound musical . Please continue this series and go more in depth. Thanks Darrell !
this helps immensely. is there an Improv 102 course? maybe where you throw in the "Blue note"
Is that a B&G hanging over the pedal showcase?
Darrell Braun Guitar This is masterful teaching. I’ve been playing on my own for 10 years but never learned scales or how to improvise. Everywhere I tried, it just didn’t click. So intimidating. This made things EASY! Thank you so much! Keep the series going PLEASE!
That's probably one of the most useful lessons I've seen on RUclips yet!
It sure was a good one.
agreed, this was the most useful i’ve seen. cld we see a “next steps” video, talking about how to advance from this, vertical improvising possibly?
I have been looking for this video for years and I didn’t know it untill today.
I have felt discouraged about my progress lately, but this lesson has help me tremendously Darrell. I fell in love with playing the guitar again
Dont give up man, the lightbulb moments will come!
It often strikes me how much more skilled Darrell is at teaching these things than most, if not all the rest.
MasterCraft.
He seems to remember how one might think in all different phases of learning, and can communicate that - but also bring sollutions or tips to get ahead and onwards.
Great guy.
Improvising is one of the most important and fundamental ideas of wanting to be a musician in any genre or style! Great work and lesson here man!
Many accomplished players who are also guitar teachers seem to forget what it's really like for learners. It's rare when a terrific guitar player like this can also teach well.
4:15 you can visibly see you struggling to stop yourself from absolutely shredding haha
"start on a, end on a"
quote of the day
Canadian: Start on "eh" end on "eh", .... hoser.
@@GetLinux i dont get the joke
@@dioimam15 Canadians are known for saying “eh” which is pronounced like the letter A
Darrell, i am 68 years old and a very 'ordinary' guitar player. Spent too much time flitting around and looking for the magic buttons and tricks, as a result I never disciplined my self. This video is easily the best explanation of improvisation on a scale I have ever seen. You make it look so simple and 'obvious', as it always is when someone who knows what they are doing explains it to you. As crazy as this sounds at 68 I am going back to basics so that i can double with my 16 year old grandson who can play me under the table. Thank you.
Darrel, this is a brilliant way to teach solo improvising! I wish someone had taught me this way. Luckily I eventually figured it all out on my own but wow this would’ve helped a lot.
On a scale of 1 to 10 I'd have to rate this one as at least a 12.
akallio9000 but the scale only went to 7th 🤣
Definitely missed out on a spinal tap joke there
@@dontstopdamuzic9355 but there are 12 intervals xP
Agreeing 112%!👍👍👍
I am really new to guitar, on day 3 or 4 now. I am at the point where I can do the A minor pentatonic scale fairly clearly at a slow rate. Seeing stuff like this gets me pumped to practice more so I can get to this level and just jam out a bit and make something that sounds nice. Thanks for the video!
Nobody has ever taught me improvisation as simple as that! I always found myself in a rut not knowing what to add or how to add more flavor. I especially found the "repeating notes" technique helpful. So thank you very much for this new perspective :)
Darrell mate you’ve opened a door I didn’t know I had a key to. tHANK YOU SO MUCH
I was one of the students you mentioned. I came from studying classical guitar, very little in the way of improvisation, so when I transitioned to blues and jazz, it was like wading into an ocean without knowing how to swim. Small steps is 100% the way to go. I love the way you broke it down like that.
Great lesson and foremost, an Excellent teaching style. Blows almost every other 'guitar teacher' on youtube out of the water (including the vaunted Paul Davids). You name the pitches by note letter instead of a verbalized TAB. First rate break down of the process including the 'map to the destination' of improvisation. Wish I would have had this type of lesson 20 years ago - I'd be a much more advanced player today.
So much great info in this. Thanks so much for making it!
I love you man. I’m paying guitar lessons and my teacher never taught me that and I thought I just wasn’t creative enough.
Great lesson! Thank you so much for these videos
Great! Very useful. Thanks for sharing!
Great lesson!!! Thanks for breaking it down.
Always a pleasure to watch your episodes!
Thanks Darrel for sharing this, this really really helped me a lot!
Many thanks for the video. Very helpful and much needed. Thanks.
Thank you Darrell, this was amazing :)
Beautiful lesson.
Thank you!
❤️❤️
2:00 "It only has two strings per note ..."
Me: tosses my guitar out the window
This is just brilliant. What great work. Thanks for doing it man.
Excellent, Darrell! Not just the mechanics of the scale, but the importance of listening to what the result is of various finger placements - and then correcting that result if you don't like it. The object is that it SOUND right.
Great lesson again very encouraging to learn more
Very cool lesson. Please keep posting these kind of videos. Thanks Bro!
Awesome video, Darrell you're videos have inspired me to improve myself
Best lesson I've seen! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!!

Slash is so good that he's on a level of his own!

Shots fired 🔥🔥
i thinking he meant slash like intermediate/advanced, not the guitar player lol
@@cjay216 yes that's exactly what he meant hahahaha the thought was just too funny, I had to comment it lol.
Simple yet satisfying. Thank you.
Thanks a lot darrell for your support, I need one of these tips and im definitely satisfied.... 👌👍👏
This lesson was awesome. Possibly the most helpful lesson I have seen to date. Thanks.
Great Video and tips. Cheers mate!
Thanks again Darrell awesome as always
Thank you for making this video. I will be re-watching it and playing along for the next couple of weeks!
Great video - it’s so useful to have this kind of skill broken down and articulated so clearly and concisely! This just takes so much of the frustration away, thank you 👍🏻
This was a wonderful lesson.... Thanks Darrell 👍👌👌
This is honestly the most helpful video on improvisation that I've ever found on youtube. Thank you so much!
What a great lesson! thanks mate
Dude!!! I’ve been searching forever for this! You just opened up so many improv doors for me. As your playing and explaining, I could hear the phrasing in my head. Thank you so much.
This was a very helpful video, thanks! 🤠
Very nice! I missed your tutorial videos sir. You've contributed a lot to my guitar playing and I thank you for that! Keep up the good work, and you help a lot of young guitarist out there!
I recently discovered this while learning scales, it was the most inspiring thing for me since I started learning to play. Cant wait to add this backing track along with it!!!!
Great video!!! It's wonderful to see people who know a lot a can teach beginners so well.
Great lesson man, thanks!!
It sure did! I was jamming along the whole time picking up a little different groove than I have been playing lately. Thanks!
Thats one beautiful guitar. Lesson was great too thanks man

Love the improv lesson. Go go.
Perfect, this is where music comes from.

Thank you for this great lesson.
the best video ever about improvise!!! Thank you
It’s always very entertaining and highly educative watching your videos. I can relate to a lot of the moments you talk about in the video. Thank you so much for putting out these videos.
Who's the person that disliked already? Show yourself coward. This was helpful.
A bot
Really! Who can find anything wrong with that lesson? Maybe it is someone who doesn't want others to advance in skills. I've been playing for about 5 years and I found this technique to be very insightful. I hope Darrell provides more of these. Thank you for calling the negative person or bot out!
Yes they are children thinking it's funny with nothing better to do usually complete failures at school or college that dislike everything
me
I think they have a reason
They didn’t want other bad guitar teacher in their recommended
Awesome lesson, made a light bulb go off in my head on understanding. Love how it builds and builds on itself making learning a step by step progression, each adding to what you first learned...
WOOOOOOOW ! without doubt the best lesson on soloing I've seen yet. Darrell thank you so much. Not only an excellent guitar player, but also an amazing teacher. Great channel. Thanks once again.
Clearly explained with great examples and zero intimidation. You, Mr. Darrell, are awesome 👍
Thanks for making this video!! Ive been trying to learn improvisation for a while, and I've never been good at it. I'll definitely be sitting down with my guitar for hours going over these techniques!
I've been watching a lot of beginner guitar solo videos and this is by far one of the best. I wish I learned this years ago. So helpful. Thank you!!
Great video!! This will help many 🎼🤘👍
REALLY wish I knew Darrell when I was first learning to play- I'd be so much better than I am now because I would have learned more. This was a very helpful, easy to understand lesson that gets the creativity flowing. Thanks DBG!
This is a great video. It explains in thirteen minutes when I spent months (years, arguably) learning on my own. The phrasing section in particular with its emphasis on root notes is really important. Great work! I'm sure your students appreciated it.
That is the lesson I have been looking for for the last few months!
Been looking for this help for sometime now but did not know what to ask or look for Big thanks . Bit of boot licking now . I always find your videos entertaining and on my thinking level please don't stop. Your guitar playing is fantastic .
Geoff
Love the channel Darrell. Always interesting and informative. Big thumbs up! Thanks for the great content.
Man, I'm about a month into my improvisation journey, and I really wish I watched this video sooner. I was neglecting basic concepts, and this will surely help me moving forward! Instantly subscribed, thanks so much Darrell!
Hey Darrel! I saw someone else do this scale and I have been practicing it the last couple days. You just showed me how to use it in a friendly way that allows me to play around more and have fun! Thanks!
Subbed. Your lessons are so easy to understand!!
I wished I had such a great lesson on improvisation when I started playin guitar 40 years ago. Simply perfect!
What an excellent guitar lesson on improvisation...wish I had this 30 years ago! Great teaching style Darrell, and you covered all the bases here to get a novice improvising in good order..well done!
This is a Teacher, you born to this man i learned so many things from you, big big hug.
Great lesson Darrell. Wish I had you as my guitar teacher 25 years ago when I started playing. Would have saved me so much time and frustration!
Great lesson Darrell! I know my students will benefit from your method of teaching improvisation. Thanks! - Mark
Thank you Darell. Big help
Wow! Love this lesson! Thank you! I looked up a bunch of backing tracks and played for a solid 45 minutes. What a blast!!!
This is THE lesson I needed! thanks!
