  • Join us as we take the new 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 for a wicked drive and a comprehensive review.
    I was somewhere like the Detroit Auto Show press days when Ford teased the GT500, which was many months before the launch, and they teased that it would be more than 700hp. I thought, ok, that’s cool.
    What’s actually powering the Shelby is a 5.2-litre all-aluminum V8 with a compact supercharger sitting on top. It makes power like a supercharged V8 should - and forget 700 horses, in production specification it makes a glorious 760 horsepower at 7300 RPM. Maximum torque is 625 pounds is produced well up into the rev range at 5000 RPM.
    Power goes through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox - yes, a dual-clutch in a Mustang - and transferred to the rear axle via a carbon fibre driveshaft. The rear differential is a mechanical limited-slip with a 3.73
    final drive.
    I did take this GT500 to a Cars & Coffee and it was a bit of a hit. The Mustang nerds came out of the woodwork to see it and popping the hood is fun.

      Thanks! I suppose so, but between the Bullitt, the 350, the 500, and the Mach 1, this gen Mustang is pure legend.

    • @135taz
      @135taz 2 года назад

      I don't know if that is the case. The Mach 1 just got a review by Car and Driver and compared the Lightning lap times for the GT350 and the Mach 1. Even though the Mach 1 is down some 50 or so horsepower it was about .1 seconds off the time of the GT350. What is really telling is there was over 3 mph difference down the fast section. That seems to say it picks up the time in other areas. Horsepower can always be added as with anything else. But, which is easier to add?

    Wow 4 tanks of fuel in 5 days doesn’t sound like a “daily” for most of us! Is that ordinary use or track and drag use? You’ll need big money for gas with this guzzler!

    • @135taz
      @135taz 2 года назад +1

      She's thirsty when flogged. I get over 17mpg average tank after tank. Up over 8000 feet down to 1000 foot level. Then I know of people that get about 3 mpg. Best I've got is over 20mpg down around sea level steadyish speeds. But, those don't last, as stop lights etc. cut into the mileage. But, 17+ is easy to get without romping too much on it.

    There is nothing else that sounds like a Mustang, is there? My very humble 2006 GT Premium with Flowmaster Outlaw mufflers brings a smile to my face simply idling in the garage or driveway, and being in the cabin as you get into it is just stupidly insane fun. I'll never afford anything in the GT350 lineup, even, but if I ever came into some money, a GT350 would be the car of choice, hands down, even if I had the resources to purchase any exotic or super car in the world. There's simply nothing else like a Shelby.

    The base GT500 costs about $75k without options and dealer markups. My 2019 Bullitt was $50k. You’ve reviewed the Bullitt so do you think it’s worth $25k more if your only using in ordinary driving (like a daily) with no track or drag racing.

    • @BrianMakse
      @BrianMakse  4 года назад +1

      If you'll drive the GT500 like I did in the vid and fully explore the performance envelope, yes. If you're going to soft pedal it, the Bullitt will be just fine for you. Sure some people are taking it to the drag strip, but that completely misses the point of the GT500.

    You are incorrect on the spring rates between the "base" 2020 GT500 and the 2020 CFTP GT500, they are different along with the rear bar. In addition, the ZL1 1LE is available with an automatic 10 speed (the GM/Ford co-designed unit), most likely because of the GT500 DCT (if I had to hazard a guess). And the A10 version is faster than the M6.

    • @BrianMakse
      @BrianMakse  4 года назад

      Thanks for pointing out the different set up. I would have gotten to the bottom of it had I been on the launch and I certainly would have asked if there was a different damper calibration (there should be). The ZL1 1LE auto is definitely not a response to the GT500.

    • @allenhewes2608
      @allenhewes2608 4 года назад

      The GM presser about the A10 was suspiciously close to the date (after) that Ford announced/confirmed (take your pick) the DCT in the GT500, wasn't it? It was enough to make some folks scratch their chin. Wasn't the ZL1 1LE only to come with the M6 (at it's 2018 launch)? Or asked another way, GM always had plans for the A10 in the ZL1 1LE?

    • @BrianMakse
      @BrianMakse  4 года назад +2

      It’s fun to think that, but a transmission integration, particularly for a low volume car in the confines of GM, is a long process.

    The splitter/gurney handling package bits really transform the vehicle in the corners. It is amazing stock. Adding those just makes it hug the road even more. I have the base and prefer the stock seats to the recaro. Drove in the recaro for a full day at the FPRS. They feel great and are very nice. I just prefer the heated/cooled seats. Although spirited driving does cause you to feel like you'll get spit out the window if it was down. For around town and normal fun driving on the roads the base seats are just perfect. I really don't think you'll miss the recaros unless your on the track. Just my .02...

It was 1 of the reasons why I decided to get myself a ZR1 when I was getting pretty pissed off with the lack of info on the Shelby GT500.I would like to know now that you got the chance to review the Shelby how it compares to the ZR1 you reviewed.Great channel I look forward to seeing your next review of any killer rides that are available.

      Thanks! At the end of the day, it's Mustang vs Corvette. They're both awesome. I think the ZR1 is quicker around a race track with a skilled pair of hands. It's the King of all Corvettes, of course. The GT500 is much more approachable, certainly easier to drive for most people, and dare I say, it may be the one that's a touch more special because it's the ultimate supercar-killing pony car. Be sure to turn your notifications on, mega cars drop on Sundays, regular cars and other things on Tuesdays. Follow along on Instagram if you want a sneak peek at what's coming up!

      Thanks for the reply. I haven't had much time driving my ZR1 (got it October 2019 from a Manitoba dealer) and had to park it shortly when the weather turned. I can't wait for spring to see how it will drive. Of course M7 or bust!!!!! Save the manuals!!!!!!!

    Brain. I would love it - if you road or track test the Lotus evora 400. 2017/2018. 2017 preferred. Manual transmission only. The last of the ours sport car experience. Hydraulic steering. Limit slip. Wishbone style suspension.
    You can get a new/used on from 70k-75k. There plenty of test the the lotus gt. But that darn car is now 105k to 120k. And they over did the original looks. The real bargain is the 2017 lotus 400. Want one bad. Close - to buy. Love to hear your opinion, heard it’s will take the Porsche. Plus reliable Toyota 3.5 liter motor with edelbrock supercharger,
    Thanks Mike

    • @jrvbamafan1

      @ says who...you? Some random internet guy. No I'd say most are people that like rowing gears and enjoying actually driving the car instead of just pressing a pedal and letting the car do everything. Been racing since I was a kid, with trophies to show for it, and I'll take a manual anyday over an auto. If you cant win races in a manual, you dont need to be racing to begin with. Any idiot can let a computer do the work for them

      Took them 6 years to build it to me even thou I believe it’s a great car wish it was 50 more hp and 4000 pounds not 4200 and the mark ups are disgusting 15000 to 30000 is to much plus the 80000 to10000 dollars mustang for that price I’ll take the zo6 c8 next year . @@JeffCarsboatsatvs. Yes it could have 50 more and 200 lbs less, regardless this car is beating cars at the drag strip that are strictly built to drive in a straight line, while it is also beating exotics on the track. It took them six years for a reason. It is an all around performance monster period. That was what it was built to do and it has exceeded expectations. You can't hate, and if you do then again, you are missing the point.

      Brian Makse that would get it into the low 10s for competition for the redeye and faster at the track waited 5years to see this car should of had better numbers
