I just ran another battery test. This time I tweaked some settings, lowered screen brightness to 100 nits just to see what I can eek out of this. I got over 9 hours. This tells me this is a 6 to 7 hour device at most in real world mixed usage. Of course it depends on what you are doing so that plays a major role. So, this is not as bad as everyone on reddit made it out to be. I am seeing 45% increase in multicore performance and about 22% in single core performance when I compared Cinebench R23 to last year's Gen 9. (And yes I have the Gen 9 with me to compare). The fans under load will ramp up but stay very quiet, however it can get hot and surface temps can get up there, and it will throttle down to lower temps but even under sustained load I am seeing that performance increase over Gen 9. Some on reddit claim that performance is worse. That is not what I am seeing at all.

My working Lenovo X1 Carbon 2nd generation served me for 6 years under heavy working conditions. Despite on constant pressure from management to order a new one as per company police, laptops have to be renewed every 3 years. And became a brick suddenly two weeks after completing moving everything into new one Dell Lattitude 7200 2-in-1. Which I'm very happy with.

I'm a fan of the faster RAM, faster storage, the 1080p installed webcam and the 12th Gen processor. I did notice the audio quality of the internal mic to be quite low so not sure what that's all about. The Lenovo quality of the chassis, the portability of the laptop and the available port selection are all excellent as well. In short, it's a workhorse of a laptop! Another brilliant review from the one and only Andrew Marc David!! 👍😁

I don't care 12th gen cpus should never be put on laptops. they need at least 50 watts to really start using the extra cores and match AMD chips.

Maybe I am wrong, but from all these years of researching these high end Thinkpad laptops, the battery life and performance when they are new appear to be quite poor. My guess is that this is a Business laptop so reliability is the most important thing on the laptop, so Lenovo would rather give the laptop below average yet usable performance in the short term until they can guarantee that the laptop at can run at its peak potential while still being very reliable.

I'm trying to get a machine with a good performance stability and good battery life, so might not be so interested on the i7 P CPUs, but still I would like to know if I get a Gen 10 with the U CPU I am going to get a good improvement compared to the Gen 9 as otherwise I might go for the cheaper Gen 9.

Better than my 2018 XPS 13 just 3 things which suck. The laptop got slower with the latest bios update not sure why and the battery performance sucks indeed hard. Besides there are some scheduling issues under Linux. With 1 core full load it gets extremely hot and so does the WiFi module. If I compile Linux with it all cores throttle down to 0.8MHz ....

I have a X1 Carbon 7th gen. I love the laptop but my two biggest issues with it are. 1. USB-C charger ports aren't durable after repeated use. Only one of my two charge ports still works after 2 years. 2. The screen is so thin that occasionally it will flicker. If I tap the screen lightly ,it will go away but I wonder how current models are. Any opinion if these are still factors with the latest models? I'm likely looking at a XPS13 as well.

Be interested to know how linux runs on it for a dual/multi-boot. It's even got x2 Thunderbolt 4 ports too as well as 12th gen CPU.
Wow, touchsceen too? 400 Nits is acceptable.

Agreed this is good for the business user on the road. SD card slot would have been nice but users needing an external drive can always plug in a USB flash drive since this has two USB A ports. Price overall seems reasonable for what you get. Great "First Looks" review as always.

By way of hard learing the 1st thing I will do is to order a replacement keyboard: the weakest point of the Thinkpad. I and my wife have had close to ten of them. The increase in the performance based on the higher wattage and more cores leads me to believe that the battery life of course will not be as good as last year. That being said, 8+ hours is not terrible considering you are getting a 48% increase in multi-core performance and 22.5% increase in single core performance.

Not surprised given the more powerful CPU, faster RAM, faster storage.

I’m using 9th gen. The thermal sucks. Even I blow 10 degree cold air at it.

Upgrade to performance thermal pads. The heatsink on the gen 9 does not make good contact when paste is used. A pad will help. I'm using Kritical brand 0.5mm and noticed an improvement.

You'd better get business laptops such as Thinkpad, Dell latitude, hp elite book, etc. than xps.
Business laptops are usually certified on military grade durability.
They will last for long time just like my current 2015 hp elite book.
They usually have spill resistant keyboard, stronger but light magnesium or carbon fiber chassis, anti glare screen, etc.

Not really. It is caused by the 16:10 screen ratio while playing the 16:9 video.
