Thanks for a great review, very well done! Also, there was one funny moment in 6:47 where the sunny picture is taken in front of a room in Fuerteventura where we went for vacay last year :D Cool stuff!
I have a bold suggestion. For Sony’s E-mount, buy Tamron for zoom lenses and Sanyo for fixed focus lenses. This is enough.Below is my combination, Tamron 20-40 2.8 35-150 2-2.8 SAMYANG 35 1.4 50 1.4 85 1.4 135 2.0 I don’t think I need to buy any more lenses. Ok maybe I need a Tamron 150-500 or 50-400
1:02 I wouldn't call it premium quality, it's a good, solid lens, but for sure not in a premium range. f1.4 up to 2.2 is really soft - usable, but soft, so no premium. However, on the whole, certainly a very good lower budget 1.4 option. I bought it twice to have a faster aperture for dark seasons, the second copy being a little better than the first.
Hi, Pav! thank you for this review...I just ordered this lens for myself! I'm a recently new subscriber to your channel and you are quickly becoming a favorite of mine! I can't wait to get this lens and start exploring its capabilities. Happy Holidays, to you and yours!! ✌🏼🤘🏼
Just received mine and have to say I am very disappointed in the autofocus for video on the A7iii. Seems very slow! Also for manual focusing you have to turn the ring far to far to move focus. Might have to send it back unfortunately!
@@PavSZ I think its more likely because you are on the a7IV. I have been looking at more reviews of people using it on the a7III and all say the video autofocus is very slow. Its smooth but way too slow for using on a Gimbal. Big shame :(
I'm choosing right now for my Sony a7 IV between Samyang 50/1.4 II and Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art. What I do is 70% photography (business portraits, food) 30% video (interviews, business events). Which lens is better for me ?
Sigma 50mm f1.4 DG HSM is old, big and heavy and although I do love it (I still have it since 2016 (I think) Samyang is a modern and more suitable for a7IV than the Sigma right now
Edit: I've been lucky to take some pictures on Samyang and Sigma over the last two days. I chose Sigma. Better sharpness from 1.4, more accurate autofocus, especially eye AF. AF speed is similar. It's subjective but imo photos straight from the camera look somehow more pro. Ok, it's heavy but you feel like you're holding professional equipment. Old but gold ;)
Awesome review, I really appreciate the examples. I have two questions, do you prefer this over the viltrox 50mm? Also you said this is fully waterproof? It doesn't appear to have ay gasket seal at all. Cheers
I am torn between this and ZA 50 1.4. I am willing to pay more for ZA, but is it really worth it? From what I have seen Samyang is better in some aspects, but the CA control is better on ZA?
Here in Aus, this lens is around $1,000 whereas Sony 1.2 50mm GM can be purchased for $2495 on sale - what would you choose (if budget wasn’t an issue)
Dear PAV thank you for your review. Some photographers on RUclips complained about the unreliable autofocus of that lens, specially on moving objects...
Samyang has a serious problem with chromatic aberrations. The previous 50mm f1.4 was really bad. In this new version you say they don't matter? Maybe in your example photo with purple and green vegetation, no, but backlight your model with a light background and you will see his entire silhouette with horrible green and purple halos. If you correct them in LR they stop being purple, but turn into a horrible gray shadow that outlines your model. As long as Samyang does not correct that, it is ruled out for me.
I have showed in my video that it is not that bad - I shot few photos in direct strong sunlight and there was very little ghosting and a bit of chromatic aberration. Sigma 50mm and several newer ones suffer from the same or worse chromatic aberration. I don't think it is a big deal as in this price range all the lenses will be the same or very similar. 50mm f1.2 G Master has zero CB and it costs more than £2k
@@PavSZ Since I sold my terrible Samyang 50 f 1.4, I haven't had another 50mm (I switched to a Sigma 35mm) and I've been looking at the new 50mm for a long time because it's a focal length that I really like. I have seen more reviews of the new samyang 50mm and it still has a lot of chromatic aberrations. The 50 GM f1.2 is the perfect 50mm, but it's way out of my budget. So I am going to wait for the new sigma 50 F 1.2 that will surely be very close to the GM but at half its price.
@@PavSZ CA shows in high contrast situations.... the shots 'against the sun' are not examples that should show that. Try shooting some some branches against a bright sky, shoot some jewelry etc etc. Look at the example in your video with the beer glass... the foam on top is just green... I'm sure while editing this image you'll notice that. Imagine a subject or frame filled with high contract subjects... LA and CA or bad on this lens, especially wide open, is insanely bad. I would go for the older 55 1.8 for this price point (that also has some issues). What I don't get is why tamron or sigma aren't entering this area with a new 50 f1.4 at around 750-900 euro. That would go like crazy.
@@ranorarakuphoto135 I am thinking to sold my newly arrived samyang to buy a 50 GM 1.4. I'm experiencing something weird, some instability when shooting at 1.4. Also the CA is actually visible.

Hello! Will you tell me the names of the presets for the photo if you use it for editing?

it might be just your copy. Unfortunately that happens.

Also the manual focus pull is not ideal for video either far too longer throw and not particular smooth either.
Great review ! How about if compare to old Sony 55ZA in focusing speed & image quality? Thanks
yes. I like to know too. Many thanks! Lovely dancer's footage!
I might do that side by side comparison sometime soon
I love your reviews Pav! Keep up the good work! I'm very tempted by the 135mm Samyang, have you had a chance to use it yet?
Thank you very much!
I had no chance to try 135mm yet but I will be doing review of it as soon as I can get it from Samyang

Great review but wish you would have hit on how bad the corners are. For astrophotraphy that’s a big deal.
it's not a lens suited for astrophotography in my opinion
pls suggest, can I purchase 85mm mark 2 samyang lens? how is autofocus accuracy ? does it really stands with sigma in quality prospective?

That's a silly question (this video was filmed with Sony 50mm f1.2 GM)
How do you program the focus hold button to switch eyes?
you go to custom button set-up in the camera and assign 'lef/right eye select' to the focus hold button
Very very good review and nice nifty fifty
Thanks 👍

I've seen quite a few reviews that autofocus is pretty bad, how true is that?
I think my video shows that it has got no issues.
In my opinion it is as solid as any Sigma or Tamron
This or sony 50 1.2? Samyang is lighter…
this is a silly question - GM lens is more than twice more expensive.
