I really loved your comment about distortion with lens correction turned off. "I don't care". Thank you. All that matters is the image that shows up on your computer. It's a little like doing a car review and complaining that the steering isn't very responsive if you disable power steering.
Yes and no. Heavy corrections of optical issues causes a loss of image resolution. It's an important consideration especially in a prime where people tend to buy them over zooms for the potential of improved image quality.
@@IanHobday Oh, absolutely agree. My point was that I'm not going to judge a lens by the uncorrected image, but by the the combination of optics and lens correction together.. If it's rubbish, then it's time to look elsewhere, regardless of the cause.
@@j16m02 That's why it's important to look at how much correction is necessary though. Without knowing that you can't know how much resolution you're going to be losing.
I'm not familiar with technical issues. However, looking at the sample photos, it looks very comfortable without being exaggerated or complicated. Thank you for the good review.
I first bought my Samyang 85 mm F1.4 when I switched over to Sony from the Nikon Z bodies. And I was totally shocked on how sharp it was and how great the auto focus tracking and number of InFocus pictures I got compared to the Nikon Z bodies. But I bought that 85 mm gesso I could have an 85 mm before I could save up and get the Sony 85 mm G master. And with how good it was I picked up the Samyang 35mm f1.4 used for $300 and it’s one of my favorite lenses in my bag. I tried the Samyang 50 mm F1.4 version one and it was not good. I should’ve listen to the reviews but I sent that one back. I finally saved up enough money and bought me the Sony 85 mm G master and was not impressed because it was barely sharper than my Samyang 85 mm and didn’t focus any better. So I sent the G master back and been really happy with both of my Samyang lenses and I use them for all my weddings. My clients just love the images. So I picked this new 50 mm F 1.4 version two by Samyang and I am really happy with it. It’s just as good as my other two lenses by them. It’s amazing house sharp the images are. Even though I have a mixed bag of lenses from Sigma to Tamron to Sony G masters. I still recommend and will continue to use my Samyang lenses. I know they have some quality control issues because some reviewers said they had a bad first copy and then their second copy works perfect. And you’re going to find that in every brand you use. I had to send my sigma 105 mm F 1.4 art lens back because it would focus and then go straight to infinity and you would have to shut the camera off just to get it to focus again that it would do the same thing. So there’s issues everywhere. Just make sure you get a good copy. Great video I am glad I found your channel
So... You're saying this 50mm is a good buy? I shoot weddings too and was wondering how the AF performs on this version II. I love my 55mm and it's going to be hard to beat, but i absolutely hate the flare on it so am looking to change.
@@marklinang5698 I'm saying it's good and worth a look, if you are looking for a fast 50. However, this only my opinion and it's always best if you can try a lens in your typical situations before you buy.
If I'm building a FF system from scratch, nowadays I would go Sony for the lens selection alone. There are so many offerings for all needs, budgets and preferences.
It depends how you define better. Sigma is bigger, a lot heavier and little more expensive, but it feels higher quality. I don't think you are going to see any significant difference in the photos.
I have not compared them side by side so I can't really say. However, I'm pretty sure that in real life photography there is no significant difference between the two.
I had no problem with the AF and every picture was tack sharp even at 100%. If that was not the case I would have mentioned it in the video😀 But, I can only speak from my own experience and that is why I said in the video that it's a good idea always to watch more than one review.
Best wishes to you and your wife. Samyang is making a name for itself. If Canon and Nikon refuse 3rd party lenses, I think they might lose out against Sony.
Should i sell my Sony Zeiss 55mm f1.8 and buy this? I’m considering it after watching your review 🧐 Nice simple and crystal-clear review btw, subscribed 👍
I ordered a Meicke 50mm f1.7 manual focus lens a couple of days ago I’m afraid. It’s tiny and err… cheap. I could have survived without a 50mm lens so wasn’t going to spend much money on one but I had a £20 Amazon voucher for Christmas and my birthday is in a few days, so thought I might as well spoil myself with a fun cheap 50mm. Delivery is scheduled for the 5th January 2022
@@mattisulanto Thanks. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. I do prefer 35mm and 24 or 28mm to 50mm on full frame for general and street use. Should be fun to manual focus for a change and try f8 for fast point and shoot street photography.
I think Samyang like Sigma dropped the RF- and Z-mount because of ship-shortage: "There are several implications. As heard from many other sources, the chip shortage appears to be getting worse, not better. Business-to-business tech news sites are settling on mid-2023 for the trend to reverse. It also implies that there is little to be gained by Sigma to start in on Canon RF or Nikon Z lines of lenses. 51 weeks ago, Yamaki indicated they were seriously considering jumping into that market, but that was a time - even a year after the beginning of the pandemic - of some naivete, the world mostly believing the virus would be quelled in months and the chip shortage soon thereafter."
Julia Trotti dogged this lens. I have the 35 1.4 & 85 1.4 and love them. Trotti held up my purchase with her review, I’d love to see any AF issues addressed before spending $800.
I don't know Miss Trotti, but she must have had her reasons to say whatever she said. However, I had no AF issues at all and I have my reasons to say that😀

The price of the Samyang 50mm F1.4 MkII is around €700 or $750. Here is an affiliate link, just in case: amzn.to/3pJiDLO
I got this for $670 in the Philippines. None of the AF issues other reviewers have mentioned as well. Really happy with this lens!

@@mattisulanto been watching mixed reviews to this lens, so I'm confused now. Hah. And the Samyang in my country doesn't seem to do loans 😂

Sony has by far the most versatile lens selection of all mirrorless.
Which is better to choose Samyang 50mm F1.4 FE II or SIGMA 50MM F1.4 DG HSM ART e mount ?
It depends how you define better. Sigma is bigger, a lot heavier and little more expensive, but it feels higher quality. I don't think you are going to see any significant difference in the photos.

Awesome! Thank you!

Do you think the samyang is sharper than the 55 zeiss?

Some others have reported very poor AF accuracy for this lens. It seems the AF worked ok for you and most images were sharp when viewed close up?

I think it's just a sample variation or firmware issue. I remember Tamron 28-75 had a lot of AF issues when it came out.
great video! glad this lens did not have focusing issues like another popular reviewer had.
Thanks for watching! I don't understand any of the focusing issues, really.

samyang 50 1.4 FE vs sony 50 1.8 FE, is the samyang worth the 550€ extra money, being the bigger and heavier lens?
The Samyang is the better lens, but I can't possibly know if it's worth it for you. You certainly can take very nice photos on the Sony too.
Sharp weather sealed 50mm with f1.4, wow! Maybe that's a good time to switch from micro 4/3 to sony's FF system
Can't say about switching, but the lens is great😀
