Im honestly kind of relieved because i had thought i had to be super spiritual like i put pressure on myself to try and become spiritually evolved for so many years it may have contributed to the anxiety cycle because instead of just enjoying my life i was constantly focused on tarot readings astrology and listening to RUclips gurus. I had forgotten to just enjoy myself and my life. Im glad yourl covered this subject

Thank you so much for sharing this Video.
Recently (16 days ago) I had my first panic attack on 20th of March, (2024) caused by the intensity of my spiritual-existential thoughts. (At least, this is how I can define the start at this moment, while I learn more and more about anxiety and I slowly realize it from different, greater perspectives each time about what is actually happening to me. Luckily I already came across the concept of me dealing with anxiety according to the opinion of an AI chatbot on 24th of March but still, I needed a week to realize its validity, since I felt like anxiety wasn't even a feeling I ever experienced before and it didn't seem logical to me dealing with anxiety at all. After that, at the end of Mach with helps of the RUclips videos about anxiety, I slowly started to realize I really had a panic attack and anxiety but I had it even in my whole life before this event I wasn't aware of yet.)
Now it is 4th of March, and I am in the fortunate situation where I can understand anxiety just-in-time, before I could worsen it with fear, and I realize it day-by-day a lot deeper how anxiety was a significant part of my past, how much I acted anxiously almost to everything. And my mind is racing now, and I have a huge and difficult task to not rush things, which I did in my whole life especially when it came to spiritual experiences. I can say, in a huge life-period of mine (now I am 23 years old, and I started to act this way in my age of 12) I focused on Analogical-thinking, considering every truths and opinions of people to pick them together even self-contradictions to see the whole, bigger picture of the Universe, Soul etc. It was a first prioritized hobby of mine, the thing I always did. This is why I feel like in my case spirituality is an integral part of my anxiety. But I also understand and consider the importance of finding more physical-reality hobbies and creating a great life-style in sync with my body. I have a lots of things in my mind and I am pretty sure of I would change my opinion in every couple of hours I spent with thinking. But as a way to trace myself I am going to share this stage of my thinking right here anyways.
I wanted to tell you, I definitely planned on using this whole experience of "recovering from my anxiety" on my own for spiritual self-development until watching your video now. Now it seems like I really need to give myself time to think thought what is the right step for me, maybe change the whole ME I used to know instead? It seems hard since in my whole life I was actually anxious and couldn't stop this topic, I was always the 'abstract person'. If so, if not, even if I really don't know what should I do, I am sure the time will solve it and slowly everything would become clear. (right...?)
So thank you anyways, I found this and every one of your videos really helpful. :3

Hi Shaan my name is Pixi...my journey through anxiety has been very long and lonely. I was 16 when I had my first anxiety attack, I'm now 58. I've lived or survived somehow since then with severe anxiety and depression. Fast forward to 9 years ago my real healing journey began..I have read the Dare book many times and At okay a life by Paul David and had basically healed my health anxiety after reading these books...BUT...I FOUND you somehow on RUclips and your simple down to earth explanation of anxiety and how to allow it resonated with me big time.. In just a month I have made so much progress and I thank you from the bottom of my heart because I know your heart is in the right place😉❤️

My anxiety was originally triggered by a bad shrum trip where I hallucinated I went to hell. I was atheist and before that my mind was pretty chill and I had no mental health issues. But that made me question everything. I got DPDR from the trip and it all led to an existential crisis. And it just became a giant mess of panic attacks 24/7, OCD, depression and I thought I was going crazy. The people in the new age tried helping but that only made things worse because it just took me down rabbit holes of deep thought and was far too expansive for my fragile mind to handle. I was the least religious person, but turning to traditional religion and reading the bible really helped to ground me and pull me out of it for some reason. It took a year or two to pull out of it, but it was the darkest time of my whole life.

Great video! I’m currently on my recovery and I know my nerves are still sensitised but I’m continuing to live my life /work no matter how I feel. What you say in this video is so true, my father is very religious and when I had my breakdown he kept telling me to pray and the panic would go away but it didn’t work. Then he spoke about the devil a lot which just made me worse 😩 I know I can pick my faith back up properly when I’m fully recovered but again like you said when your mind has intrusive thoughts etc , the religion side can actually make you feel worse!

I can see why you wouldn’t want to post this just because of so much controversy on that subject. But I am glad you did because it’s a huge question we all ask when going through the anxiety journey because it is so confusing of what am I doing wrong and we punish ourselves thinking we aren’t trusting God enough with our worries or fears or that he’s not helping us. Or even the terrible thought of demonic torment. I was to that point when I found your channel and you helped me realize the physical way anxiety effects you and it’s not any of those things. A huge relief for me. I could then repair the spiritual damage anxiety had done to my relationship with God and his word lines up with all that you are teaching us of how to recover. Religion can be a very confusing world to get into. There’s so many. I truly through all of it believe that Jesus is the only way truth and life. He was with me through all of it. In the fire next to me.

Thanks for releasing this Shaan, I completely understand the hesitance, however when you’re in the cycle the spiritual or big question itch is an extremely hard one not to scratch and too often I found myself listening to hours of podcasts and talks and going down all sorts of rabbit holes like if I could only give my mind suitable answers for all my questions my anxiety would go away, when in contrast the acceptance and allowance of my anxiety along with striving to live in the moment will allow you to connect more to your intuition, the non constructed and more simply “felt” knowing that is so much more satisfying. Again I echo your point, when you’re in the cycle it is a lot harder to allow yourself to get in touch with these feelings, focus on in the moment acceptance and properly responding. The rest will come ❤

This is such an interesting perspective, thank you so much for sharing Shaan! I find that when I'm experiencing anxiety, it's usually because I'm not doing the tangible, science-based habits I know I need in order to feel better. But then occasionally I'm doing all the things and I'm still feeling unsettled, and that's when I know I need to lean into my spirituality. Maybe it's just because the spirituality regulates my nervous system, but I'm cool with that! 😅

Very interesting. I'm more of a spiritual person than religious but religion has always intrigued me on an academic level. My anxiety can still be quite severe but I haven't thrown up in over a year. In the past I was vomiting almost daily and this went on for years. When I found out I was suffering from severe anxiety as well as being diagnosed with malnutrition because I couldn't stand the smell or thought of food I discovered a wonderful therapist here in Ontario and she was absolutely amazing. The most profound advice she gave me was "everything in life is temporary". I really thought about that and since anxiety is at its worst in the morning I chant this almost as a mantra and, sure enough, the bad feelings will eventually go away which I understand now when you say that our mind is not everything. It's a slippery slope and I know there are alot of people out there who struggle daily with trying not to lose control. Good luck to everyone who has this condition and love and good will to all of you. Thank you Shaan - you are truly a wonder to many, many people

Thank you for sharing this Shaan. I think this is an important concept related to full recovery. Not in the sense that you have to have a specific belief system to recover, but more the understanding that our mind is not everything and that sometimes we have to let go and be in the present, understanding that the world/reality is bigger than our thoughts. Whether you find that in religion, spirituality, or any other set of beliefs. I myself have been working on my recovery for 9 months, and discovering this side (AFTER being less sensitized like you mention) has been huge.

The root cause of my anxiety is more emotional baggage and God wanted me to forgive and let go of the past.

Very well said Shaan. In my faith, anxiety is talked about in the same way. Just because a thought comes to your head doesn’t mean you have to engage with it they are just thoughts, you can notice them and let them go. Entertaining intrusive thoughts is not in keeping of who we are as followers of Jesus Christ. Sometimes people do this without understanding that. Charles Stanley has a great sermon titled Victory Over Anxiety that talks about this. Sometimes we become so stressed and try to carry an unjust balance which will undoubtedly lead to anxiety and this is also not in keeping of we are as Christians. Setting boundaries and saying no to stretching yourself too thin will help you to not take on more than you should. But if you are beyond this and are overtaken by the anxiety I’d say follow the approach Shaan takes and also open up your heart to God. You’re already feeling overwhelmed and alone why not give it a try.

It sure does. It tells you exactly what to do Regarding thoughts and fear. I absolutely love my faith in God and Christ. I do notice I am way over the top when my system is sensitive though... like to the point where I tell myself things like I can’t be forgiven or I’m being punished for random things etc. so the nervous system and the mind lying to you does play a huge part. Even when the nervous system is settled, we are still within a spiritual war... but being calmer in general does help a ton in just seeing things clearer lol.

I think religion or spirituality can help in terms of motivation. In my case, there is a void in my life: I feel I need to be religious or spiritual (since I was in my childhood and teenage) but I can't really follow a specific faith. So I ask myself, why should I keep living with anxiety, what's the point. I lack motivation to continue resist all these symptoms for so much time, and I feel it would be a lot easier if I had faith in "someone" or "something". I think faith is a precious gift.

Sometimes we try to find so many ways around the topic of faith and if it's important or not but I have definitely learned that for me personally there is no way around it, Anxiety has definitely pulled me closer to Jesus and in him I find peace. Now the peace I speak of is not absent of some symptoms of anxiety but it's understanding that even though I may experience symptoms from time to time my God is with me and has commanded me to not be afraid of this which is usually one of the ways anxiety escalates. Hope this makes sense to you.

Spirituality is about The Deeper Meaning of Life and about our Purpose and our Connection with each other and with The Source behind all Creation. Spirituality is better than recovery in my opinion because it gives a reason and explaination of why I should do Recovery. We live and we die but what is The Purpose behind everything.

What if there is a religion and higher power (God) whos i the master on the issue of anxiety? Scripture says the Word of God is sharper than a 2 edged sword, piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and is a discerned of the thoughts and the intents of the heart.
The bible also talks about "faith". Faith in the action sense is basically putting one foot in front of the other based on something you cannot "see", despite the conflict, thoughts, or storm going on in your head. It comes down to trust. Are you trusting your fleshly thoughts, or trusting in God and will that He gave you to make choices by faith (and not sight) Jesus Himself came to this corrupt and sinful world in His perfect, Godly being and pressed forward for the mission of saving humanity from the guilt of sin despite the oppression, temptation, and even negative thoughts that were coming at Him. He realizes that though He was in a fleshly body in this dark world, He was not "of" this world. His identity is with God (because He is God) and He had the end goal in mind (sacrificing Himself for all who believe to be forgiven of their sins by grace).
Of course this ties into the battle with anxiety and definitely help someone have hope for the future (and even better, eternity).
The bible describes this battle as a battle with the flesh, where you can't always control the flesh and its thoughts. It describes the flesh as being deceitful and to not trust it. It is God who has kept me from doing far worse, suicide, and giving up completely. I don't trust in my ability or flesh because I know I will fail and God's grace is there to help get me back on track, move on, and realize that even the failures were still meant to be and used for the bigger purpose.
