  • The Amityville Horror is a 1979 American supernatural horror film directed by Stuart Rosenberg, and starring James Brolin, Margot Kidder, and Rod Steiger. The film follows a young couple who purchase a home haunted by combative supernatural forces. It is based on Jay Anson's 1977 book of the same name, which documented the alleged paranormal experiences of the Lutz family who briefly resided in the Amityville, New York home where Ronald DeFeo Jr. committed the mass murder of his family in 1974. It is the first entry in the long-running Amityville Horror film series, and was remade in 2005.

I totally agree, this film isn't perfect but seems to have become a forgotten underrated film in recent years. The scene with the priest in the bedroom has to be one of the scariest in film history. I love that the dog got saved in the end. I watched an old documentary about the real Amityville horror that scared the shit out of me. Even though it probably was just a hoax.

I moved to the town next to Amityville (Massapequa) in 1979 when I was 10 and the moviev was just coming out. I didn't see the movie, but I DID read the book. And my supportive parents took me for a drive past the house. I don't think I got a good night's sleep for about a year without expecting to see something coming up the stairs, (which I could see from my open bedroom door) or avoiding looking out the bedroom window at night, for fear of seeing Jodie's eyes looking in. We also had a creepy basement with a closet under the stairs - luckily it wasn't painted red.

I saw this in theaters back then, at 13 years old watching it up from the left balcony as I recall it was quite spooky when seen like that. Funnily enough, Steiger has no actual scenes with neither Kidder or Brolin I don't even know if they even met during the filming.

You have some great points. I'm going to give this another try. I read the book, and it's one of the few horror stories I've lost sleep over. Some of the scariest scenes in the book were subtle, difficult to translate to film 📽️. I think my expectations were too high when I saw the movie

I have seen it a few times over the years and relatively recently. I think its a good film and it's sequel (prequel) is worth watching too.

I think it would be remembered better without all the sequels. I remember the second one being pretty fun, if a lot trashier.

I was underwhelmed with this one, but it has its moments. Maybe it would be better remembered if it was more so-bad-it's-entertaining?
Nevertheless, there's another slow-burn haunted house movie from the 1970s that seems even less remembered: Burnt Offerings. Probably because it wasn't as huge a hit, and didn't spawn a hundred plus sequels.
