Does Cabin Air Filter reduce AC performance in your car?

- Summer is here, and it's getting warm. Cars 10 to 15 years ago don't come with cabin air filter for your AC. Today, cabin air filter is a part of every car. Filter does it job by trapping and restricting flow to capture the dust (and pollutants). Does this restriction also keep your car's AC from blowing colder air and stronger cooler air?
Thank you. The cabin air filter is purposeful just like in your home, your home AC filter filters a lot of dust & debris from reaching your coils which is a big part of the cooling process and EXTENDS the life of the system.
By removing cabin filter, this allows evaporator coil to get very dirty, and become restrictive, to a point where it needs coil cleaning. In most cars its a very big task. To avoid this problem, keep cabin filter in place. I change it once a year.
I am happy you made this video! I was stressed out about the air flow. I do say that some air filters restrict the air flow to much. My old filter allowed the air to blow better which allowed me to feel more comfortable, but the temperature is the most important
Nice test! I have read some cabin filter reviews that suggest that aftermarket HEPA filters can reduce the air flow compared to OEM filters, so you trade cleaner air against airflow efficiency. Maybe you can test a HEPA filter next! I think it is important to use a filter to keep the ducts and heat transfer elements clean.
Good idea.
I put a hepa filter in my car yesterday and it has decreased the air flow by a decent amount and I live in Arizona so it makes all the difference
really late, but i put a HEPA bosch filter in my subaru and it definitely is less air flow .
I changed the one in my civic and the air flow is reduced. I may have to buy one from Honda.
I'm in Arizona and I learned alot from video and comments. I too have noticed that the Cars Brand Name may matter with certain things. I'm surprised the cabin filter may matter.. I wonder if it's the type of material and how woven it is ? I definitely need a new one. I'm in Northern AZ and we have plenty of dust even though we have pines. Fires burning , roads, and we have so much construction. I'll check out prices on cabin air filters as well .. maybe I'll get a napa brand if I can't afford Hondas ?
The charcoal ones seem to plug up pretty fast so I only run cabin air filter in the winter when I'm using the heater I don't use it in my car in the summer because the evaporator is always wet making water cleaning itself off.... I'll take my chances but I can definitely tell the AC is colder at the center vent without the cabin air filter.
I may try that too.
Cars used to not have cabin filters
Cabin air filters can do more harm than good. I don't live in a hermetically sealed environment, and I have minor allergies to pollen. I don't have house AC, and I live in a slightly rural area; the windows are often open. In my car, the windows are open as much as possible and are closed only when it's too hot (use AC) or too cold (use the heater). None of my earlier cars had cabin air filters, and I did not have problems.
A few decades ago, car manufacturers started installing cabin air filters. These are great, especially if you live in a dusty place or you have moderate to sever allergies, in which case you probably live in a closed environment.
The big problem I have with cabin air filters is that car air systems do not properly keep out vermin including deer mice. In my later cars with cabin air filters, the mice love to nest, pee, and poop on top of the cabin air filters. With Hantavirus, this is a dangerous situation. For me, it's better to remove the cabin air filter than to breath Hantaviruses. Of course, I still have to eliminate mice in my cars.
Everything I read on either the internet or see on RUclips is written by folks who sell or replace cabin air filters, so they all say they are great. Nobody I've seen says, "Here are the pros and cons. It's up to you to decide."
You are absolutely right
I challenge this, because it depends on the car , year/make/model and how the AC system/venting system is designed.
Thank you Wang!
Great vide, straight and to the point
sample you will block the evaporator is not affecte the cooling temperature but the flow 100%
If you don’t use an air filter the compressor will work harder to make up for the loss off resistance in air flow and will damage it long term.
nope... You will destroy your condenser...Always use a filter it keeps it free of dust and debris... A lot of cars now if the condenser gets dirty you're going to have to clean it or get it replaced because most are sealed inside the dash
@@Pinkieloveragain . The evaporator is the one under the dash . Not the condenser
Evaporator...
I think air conditioning freeon cause air so thin that had ashma and uv but if use alcohol on ac if improvided
Buy portable air purifier for car for maximum quality air ... also keep it always in air circulation to keep cold air inside... also keep clean the evaporator with some products cleaner or with water hose gun
Wave cooling by sound is faster and lighter i believe
The legend himself!
3 things could save : 1 is remove air bag , 2 use alcohol replace freeon , thirdly , don't use seat heater
My truck doesn’t even have one for a long time not all cars needs one depends about what car do you have some Ram and Chevys don’t need it
Always use a cabin air filter otherwise you're gonna have to replace your ,,Expensive condenser unless you can clean it which is really hard when it's in the dashboard... Remember the filter protects The condenser...From debris
Good tip.
You mean the evaporator 😅
How about heating test with and without cabin air filter?
Good idea. This video was done during the summer. So turning up the heat would be unbearable.
Were you in recirculation mode or fresh air more?
All test were done in fresh, not in recirculation.
There are plenty of bad videos on you tube as well that show how not to install the cabin air filter.
Cabin air filter cleans the air you breathe. Yeah it will not make a big deal. But for health
74f?
No if anything it gives you more air
Damn you sound like you need some water now I believe how dehydrated people are out there
I probably should have some cold water as part of the set up and test was done inside the car without AC.
Your cabinet air filter in your car has nothing to do with how hot or cold your car get it for cleaning the air
Good video
