Big kudos to JB Hi-Fi for actually honoring a refund, wasn't expecting that at all; Most stores dealing with big manufacturer products would run you around for MONTHS trying to make you just give up. Glad to know that there's still businesses who actually care about you!
Worked there a while. Stuff like this has a 90 day replacement warranty period (rather than repair) so within that time you can get a replacement or a refund, choice is up to the customer
JB-Hi-Fi is honestly one of, if not the best Aussie electronics store when it comes to customer guarantees and refunds, etc. For stuff inside their warranty period that go bad, no questions asked as long as it's not obviously user destroyed, they will replace or give a refund on the spot. No "we need to return it to the manufacturer and can take weeks".

Been running my 1080p 60hz Dell monitor with impeccable color accuracy for 13 years, besides some temporary burn in when I sit too much on the same program it's been holding up like an absolute charm!
i nearly got 8 years out of my first gsync monitor, the display port broke and it was such an early model nobody had boards for it anymore except one guy in france. paid $60+40 for shipping, and it turned out he pulled out a zif header on it along with the plug, so it was trash too. tried to save it, but I had to get a new one. I've had this gigabyte monitor for a couple years now, and it's good, but despite being IPS it doesn't look as good as that first generation gsync TN panel.
My Mac Studio Display had a major meltdown, I was able to capture it on camera and it's not pretty. Smoke belching from the air vents under and above the display. Apple Genius bar said they had never seen such a dramatic failure of a Studio Display. I'm requesting a total refund, display was only 18 months old. But the refund process isn't as easy as it should be and I purchased it through Apple. But hey they hold the cards. I'm looking on Mac forums to find another user who's had their display have a total meltdown. The video I have captured is going to break the Mac fan boys hearts. It was an amazing Display until it went terribly wrong. I'm out of action until I find another Display, I can't use a Studio Display again until I understand why mine had a total meltdown.
Under Australian Consumer Law, I believe they _have_ to give you the option of a refund, not just a replacement. Great to hear good ol' JB is up on their consumer law!
We have FABULOUS consumer protection. If a product is not as advertised - such as "it literally does not work" - or if it breaks in a warranty state in under a year _regardless of what product it is, minimum 1 year,_ then they MUST offer you a choice of either accepting replacement or refund. They don't get to pick, YOU get to pick. These are minimum rights that cannot be waived under law.
These laws are so strong that Valve refuses to sell their "accident prone" hardware over here. Shame on Valve for having hardware that inspires such little faith that they don't believe their products could last even a measly year.

every complexity you add to a device, the more points of failure emerge, if it just takes an HDMI signal and AC, its really hard to fuck it up on the software/firmware side, but once you add a A14 chip, it can just decide "Im broken" at random.
I've never understood the "firmware update can completely brick your device" thing. Surely it wouldn't be that hard to build in a backup firmware with a hidden reset button that could dump that backup into wherever the corrupted firmware is stored, getting the device back into a usable state.
A lot of cheap PC motherboards have dual BiOS for when it bricks itself during update, why 2500$ display dosn,t have something similar i don't understand.
6:15 I love the "You're the only person experiencing this issue" bug report. I almost completely given up on reporting bugs especially when it takes 2 years and a public callout for them to finally fix the damn issue.
Because its apple and apple doesn't make products very well anymore. 90% of all their products have major design faults or defects, they then blame the user for the issue or just say "we don't know anything about this, no one else has any trouble"..? They just don't give a shit it costs time and money for them to actually do stuff properly so if they can get away with out spending any then they will keep denying it until they physically have to. And until then they will just try to pressure you to buy another of the same product because according to them, their badly made product breaking = you using it wrong and breaking it so you have to buy another one. :)
Ok yea this is obvious but report systems work off of statistics. So if a LOT of people were having a problem it would be fixed. Like yea somebody using their platform to call something out is a good thing. But 60 people having an issue with a product sold by a billion dollar company who ships hundreds of millions of units of different things? Your issue is a statistical blip and those devs probably got bigger fish to fry.
For that price he could have gotten multiple non-Apple displays that would have been perfectly fine for his videos. Heck, for that price he could have bought a 42" OLED or QLED or whatever TV and used that as a monitor.

Why does the screen need a processor more powerful than the iPad Wade smacks his things on (It uses an A14 for some inexplicable reason)? It runs fine on much less hardware, and it's not like the screen is doing iPad or Homepod things.
Loved this video. Classic DankPods video. His stupidly overpriced thing broke and there was despair, time and probably potentially lots of money lost but not only was he able to get rid of it, he got a full refund and was able to buy a bunch of brand new cool tech stuff AND donate $50 to a Charity. Seeing how much Linus talks about DankPods and GarbageTime on the WAN show... It definitely needs to happen. Garbage time is the only channel Linus subscribes to after his own channel, and luke mentioned actually calling DankPods for floatplane testing since he's their only creator primarily using safari.
Apple is so good at simplifying things and at the same exact time over engineering it. It is honestly impressive. Glad it all worked out in the end, Mr. Dank.
Overengineering is a technique used to make things obsolete sooner because nobody wants to bother to repair their old or nonworking stuff, and making things ultra-simple makes them enticing to consumers. That's why it's dirty what Apple does.

Apple: Implements a self diagnosis system that allows the display to show an error message. Also Apple: Doesn't display the fault code because that would potentially let people repair it themselves.
As much as I love scathing Apple for all the wrong they do from a consumer perspective this bs of not showing error codes is not exclusive to Apple, literally the other day I got a blue screen on my windows machine and all it says is it's restarting due to an error and gives a sad face :( NOTHING ELSE I had to go into Event Viewer to discover that the error was something sort of RAM issue. It's rare that I get a blue screen, most common when playing GTA V.
They would abide Australian Consumer Law, which stipulates that in the event of a ‘major failure’ of the product the consumer has the choice of a repair, replacement or refund :)
@@xsleep1 Apple would absolutely not have just refunded him on the spot. They would have held the unit for weeks then shipped him a used, repaired one if they were even willing to admit the one he sent in was faulty
If I could find a retail store that would just straight up refund something like that for me, they'd have my business for life. Never underestimate brand loyalty when you're just nice to your customers and makes things easy
Really??? In Israel, even by law, once you opened a tech product's box = no refuds. And no tech shop would even consider it. You can only refund after 14 days if the box is sealed. It's even rare here to get a refund if you get an issue with the product, they would probably just send it to the warranty laboratory even after 2 hours and try to fix it for ya half assed. Also, for most dealers and shops in Israel, we have like one tech laboratory firm (Which is called something like DCS) that fixes all tech and they all just send it there. I really wish Israel would make better laws for consumer rights, it's really frightening to buy tech here. And if you buy one, just forget about refunds.
JB also honours the price on the tag, even if it's outdated, I saved $100 when I bought my Sony XM4's that way. I wouldn't have fussed if they said "sorry, we must have missed that tag, that was a promotional price" but they just straight up told me that the price is wrong, but they'll honour it anyway. I didn't even have the chance to open my mouth before the card reader displayed the price that was on the tag. I also never see any "help wanted" signs whenever I visit a JB, which I infer means they have low turnover, which means people aren't quitting, which means they treat their employees ok.
I worked as a programmer for ad agencies for years. Designers love making the colours just right and precisely correct, then they’d hand it off to me to build it on monitors that used at least 3 different colour profiles and had night shift mode enabled.
Some audio engineers can be like that too. In both cases the good ones get it just right in the best case and then test it across all the worst cases. The bad ones throw a temper tantrum and demand there’s only one way to experience it.
@@KrillinInTheNameOf A lot of cheap screens nowadays are pretty accurate, not perfect but much better than 10 or 20 years ago, sometimes they only need a slight colour adjustment. This is the reason why at my work, when I got a quote request for an apple Studio Display, I just said no. Here’s an equivalent LG that costs a fraction of the price and is literally exactly as color accurate. It’s the same display panel in an LG plastic housing.
Hey mate love the vids. As a small business owner, In a completely different field, the best thing I've found with heavy equipment is the customer service. We have lost thousands on catipllar, switched all our machines to bobcat, and have our rep and tech on speed dial. It's apples to oranges, but running a small/personal business, having your equipment run through someone you trust and can talk to makes the difference between profits and problems.
Apple does have a business service, but it's unclear whether he would have to go into the store for it, or whether he can just get the stuff delivered.
I like to think the lesson here is that paying for premium price tags doesn't mean exceptional quality, especially when two grand gives you two months before borked.
Hey mr. pods don't worry about your work week getting delayed always still excited for all the content you release. We understand the pain and suffering you went through with that display!
So nice when a store sorts you out like that. Pretty sad that all of our expectations are so low of businesses that we don't just expect this good behaviour.

I love this channel because of these types of videos. All the time I buy something that the whole internet keeps talking about. It comes and breaks, having some weird issues. And every fix on the web doesn't work. After couple of days of troubleshooting I 'm done and it's time to start the fight with warrenty. Its good to know that I am not the only one with these type of "unusual problems".
Due to the horrid repairability I'd say apple is probably one of the worst electronics companies from an environmental perspective. I'm not an apple person, so I may be ignorant of some things, but from my experience with computers I've rarely found an issue I cant fix. I've used ThinkPads for a few years now, gradually using older ones as I become more experienced at working around the limitations of the old hardware. Idk where I was going with this anymore but you should just like, grab an okay monitor second hand and make due, it'd probably be finnneeeee
It can be a balance, ability to repair matters less if it just lasts a long time in general, and "usually" Apple products can last quite a long time. Of course the topic of this video being the obvious exception. On the other side is the materials used and if they can be recycled. Glass, aluminum, paper etc can all be recycled or the paper will biodegrade, and on that front Apple is pretty good, their products and packaging have the bare minimum of plastic these days
1:08 - You just perfectly described Apple products, every single word you said is basically how they make them, except they make it insanely expensive anyway for the end user. And they are not repairable so you just throw them into a landfill when they die. Perfectly accurate.
I know you mentioned color accuracy. If you lookup rtings you can find out how color accurate different monitors are before and after tuning and buy one thats meant for that type of thing.
I feel you man. I am a programmer with some wrist issues which are actually unrelated to mouse usage, and a vertical mouse helped a ton. Bought a cheap one, it broke, so I'm like "I'm going to get the expensive reliable one from logitech" and left click broke in 6 months which is a common issue apparently. And yes I could get a new one, but I was pissed off I had to spend the time returning it etc.
@@huey1910 Why do I have to solder things. They should just sell me a good product to begin with. At that point, I'll just make my 3d print own mouse
I know this misses the point of the display's target demographic (people who care more about style than performance or reliability), but if your goal is to get a color-accurate monitor that can do videoconferencing, its fascinating to think about how many DSLR cameras, XLR mics, monitor arms, and colorimeters you could get before hitting the $2,500 mark when you pair them with any mainstream 4K IPS display w/Thunderbolt.
I'm an industrial quality analyst, i couldn't agree more with what Dank said at the start. Instead of buying a $50 piece of junk every few months, buy something good at $250 that will last you for years; you will save money in the long term. Buy stuff you can be proud of, save up and make the initial investment. Occasionally you'll get burned by expensive crap (like Apple stuff) but it's far better than working with garbage. "Stop awarding business to the lowest bidder; instead, focus on total cost." That's what Dr. Deming said, the "Father of Quality".
Just here to say, yeah, JBs customer support is S tier Bought wireless earphones which were ~150 AUD, but eventually I forgot to take them out of my pocket before putting my clothes in the wash. suffice to say they were completely waterlogged and wouldn't work. Took them in and explained, they said the model I had they didn't sell anymore, I would've been happy with anything around 150 dollars, but they didn't really have any that fit the bill and in the end they substituted them with 200 dollar ones.
i've been watching your channel on and off since the ipod days (i got a 4th gen because of you! twice!) and aside from all the growth and all the new types of content, it's been really great to see how much you've grown to love this work! fantastic video as always
IIRC, those displays are running a cut down MacOS. Honestly, the idea of a display running its own OS is crazy. I have monitors that are exactly the same except one is clearly running a different firmware because the boot logo is different. What happened to the firmware never needing to be updated and monitors will monitor? Heck, VGA still works if you have the ports for it!
It's really not crazy at all. Many pro monitors have some os on them. Thing is, they NEVER stop running if they get outdated. Not even Lenovo or Canyon does that. Not even Dell.
Hilarious thing is that cheaper monitor will probably still last until you get bored of it. I have 4 monitors for my setup, 3 of them are 10 years old and one of those used to be my primary until I upgraded it. Never had an issue with any of them. Monitors are *not* complicated far as tech goes. In fact, thinking back, I dont think I've ever had an LCD monitor die on me. Heck, I've only even seldom heard of one dying. They're in my experience extremely reliable which is probably why it's considered a stagnant market. People tend to buy one and use them for 15 years. So of course it doesnt surprise me that something **unrelated** to the display function broke because some idiot, I mean "innovative" company made it needlessly complicated.
I've had 3 displays fail on me, funny enough they were all TNs, though one of them was accidental water damage I didn't notice at all at first. But 3 out of a dozen or more LCD displays over two decades is pretty good considering I literally spent a total of 20 bucks on the two of those that failed, and one of them just needed a new capacitor, and they weren't exactly used lightly, they came straight out of an office where they were on 8 hours a day or more, 5-6 days a week for years. I can't imagine any professional setting that would accept displays that could brick themselves and be unrepairable able because of a software update when you could use displays that never even need updates in the first place.
You're so impressive that you can have all the time to run all those channels and streams, I hope you're getting breaks away from the screen of course though

We have FABULOUS consumer protection. Apple is so good at simplifying things and at the same exact time over engineering it. It is honestly impressive. Glad it all worked out in the end, Mr. Dank.

Honestly that really helps put into perspective how expensive some things are
2 consoles, a tablet and a bunch of games, oh and dont forget a perfectly capable replacement screen!
Can't forget the dvd box set!
Certified apple moment
I'm using a 23" Apple Cinema Display from 2002. Slight red shift at the edges, so I don't rely on it for color accuracy, but it otherwise works great! I've occasionally thought about getting a newer Apple display, but it for sure won't be this Studio Display. Thanks for sharing your experience with it.
Just get a samsung display. They are way better, Theres no good reason to buy a apple monitor in 2024
@@Warp2090 You may be right regarding functionality. But I like the aesthetic. I do think the quality of Apple monitors is pretty good, though, and they've made some pretty innovative advancements that have brought all monitor technology forward. I would agree that buying one new is paying too much, though.
Good for you! The Australian Consumer Guarantee is a thing of beauty, and I’ve found JB Hi Fi does their best to avoid falling afoul of it.
Our automatic faults system spits out a remedy depending on the info of the fault you put in and it’s always in line with the ACCC laws!
You should consider keeping a spare editing station just for this sort of scenario. Hell, keep spares of anything and everything that you absolutely need, it will save you from so much unnecessary hassle!
Tbh, I don't know why he didn't just use his MacBook's screen itself.

Knowing that Dank loves Angry Beavers explains why he makes me die laughing. Love that show, too.

Funny Australian man rants about tech for around half an hour. Love it
Older electronics will often just refuse to die. My DS lite from 2006 is still kicking hard. I've had that thing for 2/3 of my life and it's showing no sign of weakness, not even in the battery. There's no software updates there to ruin my day.
I have a DSi XL from 2017 that still works. I've since softmodded the console with Unlaunch and HiyaCFW following the abandonment of the eShop.
Australia has great consumer protection laws. Hence why so many AAA game platforms are afraid to operate there.
Apple product: Breaks in 2 months
The TV my grandma bought in 1991: Still works perfectly and shows no signs of giving up
Due to the horrid repairability I'd say apple is probably one of the worst electronics companies from an environmental perspective.
Do you know of the man the myth the legend Louis Rosmann, if not check him out, I feel like you'd like his content and *_breathes in_* FUCK APPLE!
The fact that they refuse to put the nail in the coffin for the lightning cable states as much for me.
Lmao you have never come into contact with a Huawei phone or a Samsung tablet then if thats your idea of horrible reliability
@@patrickshaw411 Thankfully the EU is graciously giving them a long overdue kick in the ass to make sure that happens.
1:08 - You just perfectly described Apple products, every single word you said is basically how they make them, except they make it insanely expensive anyway for the end user. And they are not repairable so you just throw them into a landfill when they die. Perfectly accurate.
Imagine being able to upgrade your old computer to get 10 years of additional life out of it.
I hate anti-consunerism, meaning apple's existence grinds my gears.
And then they claim to be environmentally friendly

I know you mentioned color accuracy. If you lookup rtings you can find out how color accurate different monitors are before and after tuning and buy one thats meant for that type of thing.
I feel you man. I am a programmer with some wrist issues which are actually unrelated to mouse usage, and a vertical mouse helped a ton. Bought a cheap one, it broke, so I'm like "I'm going to get the expensive reliable one from logitech" and left click broke in 6 months which is a common issue apparently. And yes I could get a new one, but I was pissed off I had to spend the time returning it etc.
solder a pair of new switches in, the old switches sucks anyways
@@huey1910 Why do I have to solder things. They should just sell me a good product to begin with. At that point, I'll just make my 3d print own mouse
@@Aura_Mancer … because it’s easy and it’s the only way to fix/modify eletronics, especially non modular compact ones?
I know this misses the point of the display's target demographic (people who care more about style than performance or reliability), but if your goal is to get a color-accurate monitor that can do videoconferencing, its fascinating to think about how many DSLR cameras, XLR mics, monitor arms, and colorimeters you could get before hitting the $2,500 mark when you pair them with any mainstream 4K IPS display w/Thunderbolt.
I can just imagine that scene, where the JB staff are all "where would you like us to send your refund to?" and he's immediately "store credit mate"
for accurate colors you could also just use a color calibration tool (~$120) you could also maybe just rent it
Apples products might be "reliable" but if literally anything goes wrong, its "oops gotta buy another one!"
Just here to say, yeah, JBs customer support is S tier
Bought wireless earphones which were ~150 AUD, but eventually I forgot to take them out of my pocket before putting my clothes in the wash. suffice to say they were completely waterlogged and wouldn't work.
Took them in and explained, they said the model I had they didn't sell anymore, I would've been happy with anything around 150 dollars, but they didn't really have any that fit the bill and in the end they substituted them with 200 dollar ones.
A LTT and Dankpods Collab would be amazing, an ipod themed PC build. 10/10 would watch.
I just remembered that bit. This will be in my dreams tonight.
And you just KNOW Linus would be down for that.

Imagine they give him thay really old MacOS server
i've been watching your channel on and off since the ipod days (i got a 4th gen because of you! twice!) and aside from all the growth and all the new types of content, it's been really great to see how much you've grown to love this work! fantastic video as always

Its like matresses.
@@project-gladiatorYou're supposed to swap those out every few years or when they sag, though. Otherwise they start going horrible.

There’s so much missing from comments under a vid like this. Guys Apple studio displays are competing with like 20-30 grand displays.
