Since I started listening to Beethoven directed by Abbado, I cannot stand most of the other interpretations. He got something about how to produce unity among instruments and fluidity in the passages, while still keeping crisp and faithful music. Abbado has probably been the greatest director in the world.
Brendel never fails to please. His Schubert is iconic and the magisterial performance of the Beethoven 3 in collaboration with the superb - and much missed - Abbado, is terrific; Abbado could seemingly form a mystical musical link with almost any pianist - Gulda, Pollini or, as here, Brendel - and produce magic.
it is most impressive beethoven piano concerto no.3 performance that i've ever heard. especially 1st mov's cadenza. wonderful! bravo Alfred Brendel and Abbado!!!!!!
In my opinion, those responsible for envisioning, producing and executing this video ought to be known and recognized. I am speaking of both sight and sound. Perfection upon perfection (upon perfection)!
This wonderful video shows the advantages that can come from being able to see as well to listen to music . Two things stand out for me . First , and as ever , there is the sight of Claudio Abbado ‘ s genius as a conductor in bringing out the best in this most talented orchestra and drawing out the subtleties of this lovely piece . Then we can see the members of the orchestra themselves mesmerised and delighted by Alfred Brendel’s brilliance and sheer vitality in this memorable and utterly delightful recording .

I like the conductor, he is so passionate and active , makes music more lively, and pianist play beautifully ,there's lots of emotions in this music !!
Too fast listen to Barenboim and Klemperer. I think Brendel is marvellous but just misses the grandeur of Barenboim (probably forced upon him by Klemperer). Most noticable in the cadenza
The Great Claudio Abbado. A Maestrissimo who who delved into Beethoven's soul and understood him completely. He lived and breathed Beethoven. RIP, Maestro.
The piano performance by Brendel is so marvelous that I'm not able to criticize at all. So, I became to prefer this No.3 piano concerto to No.5 "Emperor" If you went into the forest of Beethoven's excellent works, You'll notice how this Beethoven's No.3 piano concerto is marvelous. And I do declare that Alfred Brendel is one of the supreme pianists in this present world. From Tokyo
I completely agree with you with the n°4 those are the richest one as far as emotion, finesse are concerned and for that reason perhaps the most difficult to perform, you can't show off, you can't hide behind virtuosity for the sake of it. Brendel doesn't has no mannerism like so many pianists especially young ones while playing and is in complete fusion with Abbado and the orchestra which obviously takes an immense pleasure which can be observed by the smiles of some of the instrumentalists.
Thank you for your thoughtful comment. I think that Brendel is a little bit different from the pianist like Horowitz. I can say he's a pianist of thought or intelligence. Especially,I love his Beethoven, Mozart and Schubert.
He was considered as the specialist of Beethoven and Schubert ; he has recorded practically the complete piano works of Beethoven and nearly all Schubert sonatas. I have some of the LPs of those recordings which are amazing. There is another great pianist for Beethoven whose career was unfortunately short: If you wish to hear a fantastic performance of Beethoven's concerti try to find the cds of Solomon Curtner mostly known to the audience as Solomon (1902-1988). He gave for the BBC the full performance of Beethoven's sonata and was recording them in 1956 when a devastating stroke paralyzed his right arm putting an end to his career . With Arthur Schnabel at that time he was considered as the best Beethoven interpreter. A complete recording of the concertos was published by EMI in Germany under the reference CDF 300. 004 2 in three cds with a bonus of his interpretation Beethoven Sonata n°8 Pathétique. the concertos are performed with the Philharmonia orchestra of London either conducted by Herbert Menges or André Cluytens. The recordings were made in the early and mid 50s. Some in stereo. His performance of the n°4 is a must hear. You can find a full article on Solomon here :en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solomon_(pianist)
The question is not to criticize music, it's the performance which may be so. You can immediately make the difference between fantastic interpretation and one which is let's say in the average. If the interpretation is exceptional you'll get in a sort of trance and forget everything which around you in the auditorium. If it is not anything that may happen will distract you. Brendel as well as Solomon were among those few pianist which made you forget that there was an instrument. It is pure magic. They don't need to make faces and gestures like for instance Lang Lang.
i get goose bumps... From the time when I started listening to Schubert's piano music, Brendel was my favorite. My expectation that he would interpret Beethoven better than anyone else was right.
JY Sir consider complimenting your Beethoven listening with Kempff (eg piano sonatas opus 2/2, opus 22, opus 90) and Edwin Fischer (opus 110, opus 57 sonatas, the emperor concerto with furtwangler, and the first two movement of Beethoven’s 3rd piano concerto)
This is now a valuable historical document as alas, Maestro Abbado is n longer with us and Alfred Brendel is unable any longer to play because of deafness. How ironic and sad that his hearing should fail (2008) when he was arguably capable of even more great performances such as this - large-scale chamber music with both musicians obviously enjoying themselves and taking the orchestra along for the ride! The passage-work is crystalline and the dynamics and pacing magical. Bravo!
as I've witnessed, the very BEST combination for this Cm concerto! Brendel + Abbado + LFO! This combination pushes - in a very gentle and hard way - the doors of PERFEKTION! BRAVO!!!
Beethoven was a creative genius and in another 200 years his music will probably still be revered. Good interpreters though they are Abbado and Brendel will have long been forgotten.
You are most probably correct. 200 years from now will have their own Master interpreters of Beethoven. For me, I get to enjoy Brendel and Abbado.........and I am eternally grateful.
Extraordinario concierto .
Thank you for uploading this very memorable interpretation of this magnificent oeuvre.... Art , literature and music is about the only positive thing that will remain after we are all gone.....
listening to this was a beautiful way to spend 40 mins on a quiet saturday afternoon - thanks maestros. (Incidentally I had the privilege of putting a question to Mr Brendel during a talk he gave in Devon, UK. What a humble man, full of wisdom, and very witty too!)
In my opinion Beethoven's most creative and sparkling piano concerto. The rondo in particular never ceases to amaze me -- one moment demonic, the next, flirtatious. And technically very, very demanding. To be able to see this performed by two musical titans -- Abbado and Brendel -- is simply miraculous. Thank you for the really superb upload.

Brendel and Abbado, how can you not get behind that blend of the controlled power and delicate nuance of both of them? I miss Abbado very much. December 16, 2018
Alfred Brendel’s performance of Beethoven’s Piano Concert conducted by Claudio Abaddo is magnificent -as demonstrated by the reaction by members of the orchestra -clearly delighted to hear both the subtleties and the passionate power of his wonderful hands in this great work . 5 star recording !
That Brendel guy worked that piano over properly. Can't overlook the great job Abbado did too. I like this version of op 37 best. The final 3 mins just superb. Can't get it outta my head now !!!! LOL
Seeing the Maestro look that bad( He had stomach cancer for I think 13 yrs)but at the same time with the attitude of not giving up without a fight provoke in me sadness and admiration. So extreme I know.... RIP Maestro Claudio.
This marvelous concerto was clearly modeled and inspired by Mozart's extraordinarily beautiful Piano Concerto 24 in the same key, C minor. I love both Mozart's concerto that inspired Beethoven to write this one. Though I love all five of Beethoven's wonderful piano concerti I have to say that I always liked this one the best. The deep and moving coda to the first movement (16:49 - 17:38) fills my eyes with tears. It expresses profound tragedy and pain, starting pianissimo like a whisper, then gradually growing to a tremendous crescendo to the final explosions of repeated C minor chords that end the first movement. Alfred Brendel and Abbado are two great artists, who do a wonderful job in this recording. My only reservation would be the excessive reverberation in the hall audible in this recording. One can also hear Brendel's humming at times but it just makes it more human and endearing, and so I do not mind that at all. Alfred Brendel is a great pianist and a great Beethoven interpreter. So is Maestro Claudio Abbado. Their collaboration here is one of the great performances of this magnificent concerto. Maestro Abbado died on January 20 2014 at age 80.5. He was a great conductor. May his work live forever thanks to the the miracle of technology. RIP Maestro Abbado. I never heard you live in a concert, but I am familiar with many of your great recordings. I miss you.
Maybe you have read that this Beethoven's mastetpiece was inspired in Mozart's piano concert 24. Although I deeply love and admire Mozart's music, I would say that there is no comparison between these two concerts. His piano concert 24 is beautiful but I feel that Beethoven's piano concert 3 is actually one of his best masterpieces, more probably compared to Mozart's piano concert 20. In fact, number 20 and number 9 are the Mozart's piano concerts I adore and like most 🎹🎵🎶
Beethoven was inspired by Mozart's piano concerto n. 20 K466 writing this marvellous C minor concerto... The fact that confirms that thing is that Beethoven himself wrote cadenzas for Mozart's K466.
As a Japanese person , I want to finish my last life while listening to this masterpiece under the Japanese cherry blossoms in full bloom at the shining night of the fullmoon . 🍎

Splendid! ❤ for music and let the men think, because it is still a men’s world instead of a wonderful world!, they are ruling the world, listen to this kind of music, as a therapy for healing the world instead of destroying it! More than 2000 years of civilisation, it is a embarrassement where we stand now. Let there be love…
# Attractiveness of live venue video, # piano, # pianist, # performance speed of songs is the fastest. #Realism, #LED lighting, #Camera division, not only the conductor's score symbols, but also the 🎹 pianist's performance is not only the dynamic symbols, change symbols, and speed symbols of the score, but also the role of the crossed right hand and left hand. The articulation of the nuances is wonderful. I was impressed. Crossed hands Roles of right and left hands 14:21 seconds, camera division and LED light beams 14:31 seconds, overlap and light beams 15:02 seconds, multiple TV cameras Switching operator's score and switcher camera that can read score I was very impressed with the split video and overlap video. 🙌👍❤️ Thank you. 😊 I am commenting.
Brendel still remains one of the most fantastic performers of Beethoven's works! History will never forget this great artist.
A pity, that he don't play now.....he plays very good!His teacher was E. Fischer👍

fluent and balanced, great dynamic change but never too dramatic

I miss you.
Please don’t compare Beethoven with Mozart !
In fact, number 20 and number 9 are the Mozart's piano concerts I adore and like most 🎹🎵🎶
I miss him too
Beethoven was inspired by Mozart's piano concerto n. 20 K466 writing this marvellous C minor concerto... The fact that confirms that thing is that Beethoven himself wrote cadenzas for Mozart's K466.
Julius
Magic Abbado and Magic Brendel!
Bravissimi.
Of course also the orchestra!
The music is German, the passion is Italian, the piano is Brendel. Love them all.

no pianist ever seems to get the end of m. 1 just perfect, very difficult. Orchestra and conductor excellent.
The greatest Ludwig, brilliant Claudio Abbado, one of the best, Alfred Brendel.
Fantastic orchestra
do not put ads in the middle of the concert
Download Adblock or uBlock. I haven't seen an add myself for eight years.
Das war sehr, sehr schön - in Zeiten wie diesen ein großer Trost.....................

Currently

Congratulations !
The season of blooming cherry blossoms has come again in Japan
In Japan
the cherry blossoms are in full bloom everywhere
However , unfortunately
just like last year , for the second year in a row ,
banquets in famous public parks of Tokyo have been perfectly banned to prevent the spread of the Covid - 19
The Rite of Spring peculiar to Japan from 1000 years ago can no longer be held .
This year too , the cherry blossoms are destined to fall lonely in front of Tokyo dwellers
We are very lonely and unfortunate
Someday please visit Japan
Japanese delicious foods wait for you
Good luck !
Did I hear right Brendel finishing the concert with Abbado ? Incredible performance from Brendel as usual
Splendid! ❤ for music and let the men think, because it is still a men’s world instead of a wonderful world!,
they are ruling the world, listen to this kind of music, as a therapy for healing the world instead of destroying it! More than 2000 years of civilisation, it is a embarrassement where we stand now. Let there be love…
Grande Claudio, sempre un piacere ascoltarti
I am commenting.
This music product is something human being can really proud of. The perfect combination of music, conductor and pianest. Thanks.
and ....proud to...? Pride comes before a fall; our ears ...we must be thankful for the notes and the "violin maker" to produce color and sound
My favourite Pianist of them all and one of my favourite conductors producing pure magic.
