The thing I like about what you two are doing is that it’s something any of us who are interested in sailing could do if we put our mind to it. A lot of the other channels are circumnavigating or going to some place thousands of miles away… you two are an example of what can realistically be done by regular folks.
Thats a good point. Not many of us can stop working long enough to get far on a sailboat.
I absolutely know how you feel about setting out on your first trip. Our first trip in our motor yacht was up the lake for 53 miles and I thought I was going into the Pacific! Great video as always!
Isn’t there a phrase about half the fun of a trip is the planning and preparation. Well there’s something like that, take care and safe travels.
Yea, true. It forces you to get things done that otherwise get put off also!

Regarding your contingency for towing: While docking my 36' Beneteau in downtown Nashville a few months ago, I had a spring line wrap the prop and I was in a strong river current. I deployed the anchor and rigged a tow line using my Mantus bridle with a tow line attached to it; tossed the line to a tug which maneuvered me back to the dock where a diver cut the wrap. The bridle made a huge difference in effective towing.
Good tip. Half the reason I keep that is in case a nearby boater needs to help us, or we need to help them. We have a towing service that covers the entire area of Florida and tows for a yearly fee and it covers any boat I use, mine or not. We've used the service four times on power boats and watched as they've pulled two sailboats off that were run aground.
Bugbusters makes a hatch screen that's extra wide and you may have gotten it, not sure. ANY gaps will let bugs in! For my Catalina which has a very wide companionway, I had to get one of those. We love ours, nothing gets in save for when we momentarily open it. Thanks for sharing.

Great video! I appreciate that you’re walking us through your checklist. You’re right, other RUclips channels might be crossing the ocean, but they seldom show us what went into the planning. This is great for any of us who hope to one day follow in your footsteps.

We don't have a solar oven, so any of our hot food can be heated either by the rail-mounted gas grill or our denatured alcohol two-burner stove in the galley. In case of bad weather, we can survive on other snacks. I looked at the solar oven but and that looks great, but we're not on the boat long enough. What's so great about the solar oven is no fuel required. Thanks for watching! -Jason
This is a great video and I'm super excited to see how your trip goes! I agree with many of the other comments that I don't plan to quit my job and learn to sail while offshore. I purchased my '81 O'Day 28 in 2020 and have been sailing on Thursday nights in the local bay and getting out on longer (25 nm or less) day trips as much as possible... but I have to be back in time for my job! As I learned on one trip, the weather doesn't always cooperate with a schedule, so trips like yours are exactly the type of thing I want to see. What's more, I'm interested in doing some sailing in the Keys (Key Lime Sailing Club in Key Largo provides Catalina 22s with the cost of the room) so am interested to see what kind of weather and interesting things you encounter. Thanks for the great videos!
We will probably go do a week at Key Lime in the next few years as we had a Catalina 22 prior to the O'Day and would like to be able to spend some time down there but not have 70% of the trip made up of getting down there and back. If we like this trip, we might do it again, staying two weeks instead of one. Thanks for watching!

Great video and great idea of using the drone to see what’s up there. I need to go up my O’Day 302 and test/replace the anchor light. What is the weather station you have set up there? It looks like it is solar powered and how has it worked out for you?
This sounds like great adventure. It will be interesting to see how the boat performs off shore. I'm a couple years behind you on this trip, so it will be very informative since we have the same boat.
Thanks! I'm hoping it's just a longer version of a day out sailing, but the winds are higher and more consistent south of Ft. Meyers. Plus, we will be sailing two nights all night, so that should be interesting.

Hey Question....I noticed when you floated the drone what was at the top of your mast. Because we are in Florida, has there ever been thought to a lightning defuser ? I see one of these here in North Port over an electrical panel next to our Legacy Bike Trail. I've seen this on other sailing videos. The one guy said they really work. Just curious!
You mean those round things? I looked online I can't figure it out. I'm pretty sure the whole boat has a ground to the water... it's got a really thick ground bare wire that runs to everything and then grounds into the water, I believe, but most of the time if you take a direct hit, it fries everything. We have daily lightning storms in the summer and have been lucky so far.
What weight anchor do you run?

Several things. First, I had to go look up the lyrics to the Beverley Hillbilly song 😆. I was way off. Second, your videos sure do represent us average boaters. How these other fancy youtube people nonchalantly set out across large bodies of water, seemingly without a care, ill never know. I have list upon list. And third, if you need to upgrade the Garmin at the helm contact me.
Oh..what editing software do you use, and do you recommend it?
@@mvintrigue-trawlerdiy1101 I love Power Director and it's easy and fast, but I switched to a dedicated apple with Final cut for the stability. I miss the speed and easier-to-use-ness of power director, plus it has more free stuff - but not the crashing.
