  • In the Conservatives' first policy announcement of the general election campaign, Rishi Sunak said on Saturday he would introduce a new form of mandatory National Service for 18-year-olds if his party wins the vote in July.
    Under the proposed policy, the Tories say 18-year-olds would be given the choice of a full-time military placement for 12 months or a scheme to volunteer for one weekend a month for a year.

    I joined the army at 16 years old, I served 16 years and completed 3 tours of Afghanistan as an infantryman.
    Although it made me the man I am today, it has also ruined my life, I am riddled with ptsd and depression, and the army do absolutely nothing to help.
    I am 100% against this.

      @@alexharrison2743that volunteering at Oxfam. I did that back in 2015, for 2 months in 2015 just as an out of work stop gap, it was in their distribution centre. It was full on run around packing, stocking in their warehouse for free. Volunteering in name for charities like that is a scam.

      As an old(ish) person I would NEVER vote for any party that would bring in compulsory national service. I have voted Tory for the last time. In fact I've probably voted for the last time. Bloody disgraceful. I feel sick with anger.

    Does anybody seriously think the Tories would be able to organize this when they have failed in basically every large-scale infrastructure project they've tried? This would be magnitudes more difficult than HS2, their free childcare policy, Rwanda, etc. And they've made a mess of all of those. They will never be able to orchestrate this in a million years.

    In malaysia we had compulsary national service. It was a waste of time for most youths that had done it and it was ultimately a front for the government to siphon away taxpayer dollars as well as cherry pick companies to set up and run the programme.

    As a 21yrs old if the goverment told me I had to sign up I'd leave the UK for good. I will never be part of the military, not only is it extremely dangerous, but it also goes against all my beliefs. Don't spread death and destruction, spread peace & love to everyone ☮️✌️

    Most young people have very little money and need to work. Making them volunteer for one weekend per month for a year is basically making them work unpaid for 24 days. This policy will be a disaster for Rishi, as it will encourage most young people to vote against him.

      Why not make it part of the school system
      This actually might work and achieve desired goals

    My father just missed out on National Service and would have been in his early 80s if he was alive today. The idea that anyone below the age of 85 could have any kind of nostalgia for it is patently absurd. It's always the jingoistic armchair generals who think they won WWII despite not being born yet that get so misty eyed, remembering battles they saw on the silver screen whilst convincing themselves they were there.

    If the tories really want young people to have opportunity or to be proud of this country then they need to put stuff in place that makes them feel proud and gives them opportunity, not forced “volunteering” or getting shoved into a boot camp that somehow gives people a chance, I suspect those who just don’t want to be in the army but need the little money they’ll get will leave the training and either leave the country or cement their Labour vote

    As someone who grew up next to Catterick Garrison (biggest barracks in Europe), believe me when I say, joining the army doesn’t “foster national pride”. After a couple of years most squadies detest the work and the country.

    I love all the older people that never had to do it and probably have never volunteered to do anything wanting to force this on 18 year olds... who are legally adults. This is an absolutely ridiculous policy.
    How will it work, if it's one weekend a month in for example the fire service, a highly skilled profession that requires constant training? How will supervise these completely untrained, potentially unwilling young adults? Are professionals in front line services expected to also "volunteer" train these people and take time away from their already overstretched jobs... It makes no sense what so ever.
