- In the U.K., Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced plans to reintroduce mandatory national service if reelected next month.
The proposal would require 18-year-olds to choose between enlisting in the military or regularly performing community work.
Sunak claims the scheme is intended to protect "democratic values" that are allegedly "under threat." However, with the governing Conservatives trailing more than 20 points behind the rival Labour Party in opinion polls, the future of this policy remains uncertain.

So you can either join the forces or do unpaid work on a weekend. What did the 18 year olds do wrong. Forced to join the army you’re looking at a mental health crisis at best (some people are just not suited to that type of training at all). As for voluntary work on a weekend, that’s what criminals get, it’s known as community service and the only crime these kids have committed is turning 18. Voluntary should be voluntary not compulsory

The US army is 400k people and the Russian army is 1.3M because 35k volunteers were joining the army a month during SMO. The US can't even defeat Houthis in Yemen with all their and their vassals' expensive toys in the sea. Trudy should institute a draft too and see what happens to him.

While it's technically not a draft to pull on all army reserves, it might as well be when army reserves includes everyone of age, which actually fits your point!
@@derekeliopoulos2670 The Soviet Union and now Russia always had a draft because they were always in the crosshairs of the Western Imperialist powers that wanted to destroy it at every corner. It doesn't apply to the US/NATO, none of the conflicts they were involved in after WW2 were because their security was threatened. Nobody wants to join the army in the collective West now because all the conflicts they were in in the past 20 years were based on lies and propaganda.
I personally think this is a good idea, but the younger generation is going to hate this. He is going to lose A LOT of votes because of this.
Would you think it's a good idea if you were a teenager? It feels like a wildly outdated mentality. You shouldn't owe your country anything but taxes. The cost of living is already so high, mandatory public service seems ridiculous.

Im swiss we have that since 1874 and it works good. if you don't want to go to military you can do so called "civilschutz" and "civildienst" - translates to civil service. where you help in school and retirement homes and stuff. as said in the podcast doing something for the community is always good. most people do it after high school and before they start there studies. as it is a easy way to earn money with no further education. the only thing that should be added besides that is that women should do it too. in Switzerland women don't need to do anything at all for the country.

Trudeau promises to spend more with NATO but in fact the military has been severely under budget. All talk and promises to spears the USA. Conscription is investable but parents don’t want to accept it.

The world has changed a lot since I was young and if a President like Trump gets in he will demand that Canada pay its fair share of NATO fees, they just sent a letter to the Canadian government about this. Whether you agree with it or not a country needs an army and Canada has a lot to work to do to build up its forces. I would have whined about it at that age, no doubt, but nevertheless many young people could sacrifice a year of their life to learn such skills...
@@CYeoungI joined the Reserves and was willing to serve overseas until I had medical issues. Since I didn’t want to work a desk and clean toilets I quit but if I am reactivated I will do whatever I am capable of proudly serving even if it is digging latrines.
