Played this end of 80s much with two friends. At age of 40 we played it again. Sitting on the floor like early years. Ouch, our old bones hurts much after the session. 😂
Nope. Love Talisman. It would never leave my collection. And I'm not nostalgic, I came into it late. It just makes an incredible narrative. Lots of fun.
The artwork within the cards and the board is absolutely beautiful and the condition of your own copy looks to be in brand new condition. I totally agree with you that you have to introduce house rules to this just like most games, especially as you say, you can spend two hours just going around and around before you seem to be getting anywhere. The 1 to 6 playing cards are an excellent help as they're like additional fate and adding the jokers is a great added bonus. Another great and interesting video with excellent ideas, many thanks
Great vid! Came looking for the house rules that you mentioned in your top 10 list video. Will have to dig out my copy and have a go. Agree on Gary Chalk, not sure what happened between him and Joe Dever (Lone Wolf author) as his massive contributions to that series has been all but erased. He also designed the excellent Games Workshop board game “Battlecars” with Sir Ian Livingstone. Worth hunting down for a bit of mad max action.
Thanks a lot for the video! Haven't played this in ages. Are there any other house-rules you didn't mention in the video? Here is the list i came up from what you said... Subbed yesterday to your channel...content is...AMAZING !!! Gold start: Everyone starts with 3 gold. Defeat: Defeated monsters in Craft+Strenght count towards trophies. Level-up: 7 pts trophies to lvl up Strenght or Craft or Lives Spending trophies: excess from trophies are not lost. Close enough: 4 corners of outer+middle can be entered if landing on adjacent spaces. Three for one: Trade 3 items to upgrade 1 Strenght or Craft Fate dice: reroll any die. Fate can be bought from the 4 corners, cost 5 trophies or 3 gold. Double gold: anytime a card tells you to gain gold, gain double that amount. Deck of many cards: Deal 6 cards (between 1-6 plus 4 jokers). Cards can be used for movement or combat BEFORE throwing dice. Never use for board rolls.
You and I like this game for the same reasons. Are there better games? sure. Talisman was my favorite because anyone could win, you didn't have one guy that was a brilliant strategist always winning. We used to play this regularly when I was living on a ship in the Navy, didn't take up a lot of room and the graphics were great.
There is a version called Darjhum that someone made and it improves on many aspects of the game. it`s incredible. I found out about talisman 2 years ago and it is still played a lot at home cause we find it fun. It`s a game that i play with the same people that enjoys "Search for the emperor`s treasure" and "treasure island" so i guess not taking it too serious adds to the experience. I can see people looking for something more complex and less random not enjoying this one so much but to me, it`s about creating small tales.
Talisman........aaaaaaahhhhh one of mine and brother's fav games........with house rules of course lol First time I saw it was when my brother bought the GW Edition.....I think thats 3rd Edition and loved it. Both of us got the last FF edition, of which my brother got all the expansions. Damn enjoy this game. Like you said not the best but it's enjoyable. I heard someone say "Talisman" it's rules are misunderstood in the same way as everyone plays "Monopoly" wrong lol
I don't think people realize that Talisman is a race game with press your luck elements. Anything that can get the game down to about 1.5 hours is good, IMO.
I blooming love Talisman! I am missing a board section from my second edition. I got it for my birthday back in the late 80s. I can understand why modern gamers dont like it. I do enjoy fourth edition. Looking forward to all the expantions being rereleased in September (2019) so I can pick up the ones I am missing.
It's not a "bad" game. It's excellent. It is a different gaming experience from chess. Just like heavy metal is not "bad" music just because it's not opera, or impressionist painting isn't "bad" just because it's not classical. They aim for, and achieve, different goals.
@@TheDungeonDive they could be, but I don't see it that way. I don't think it's flawed or dated. It's just a different type of game with a different ethos.
That’s great! I do, and it’s still a top 10 game for me. I can recognize when things I love are flawed because I value being critical about the things I choose to spend my time and money on! Not saying you aren’t critical. :). We just have different ways of approaching things.
I also don’t think that your art / music analogy holds up because you’re comparing different styles and genres. There is poorly made music and poorly made art of all genres, but it’s still possible to enjoy those things. It’s possible to love movies like Troll 2 and The Room, but also recognize that they’re poorly made. There is poorly made metal music. Poorly made opera. There are poorly made examples of all different styles of art. With Talisman, even when compared to other adventure games it is flawed and dated, but that doesn’t mean we can’t love it warts and all. Some of us love because of its flaws and dated design.
I enjoy your videos so much. :) Thank you. :) I sold my whole Talisman 4th edition. As much as I love the retro feeling even of that edition, it really takes too long for what it is. And because of the fact I do not like house rules at all we never tried to trim down the game length. By the way - I am still waiting for your Sword & Sorcery video. ;)
I know this is an old vid, but I'll try asking anyway: When making the movement/combat deck, do you combine 2 complete deck's worth of A-6's and jokers, or do you use one deck's worth, and add 2 additional jokers. 56-card deck or 30-card deck? Probably not terribly critical, though it'd change the odds of drawing the jokers... Love these tweaks, by the way! This is a fun game, but it often outstays it's welcome, so it's great to have some options for getting the game time down, while introducing some new strategic decisions with the playing cards. Thanks for putting this out there! Sadly, though, I think a lot of folks miss out because the title isn't particularly suggestive of the house-rules nature of the vid.
@@TheDungeonDive , so, to be clear, each player has a 30-card deck- A-6 and two jokers? Just want to clarify: I mentioned this vid and your card variant on BGG... My current description has it slightly wrong...
So there should be x jokers where x is the number of decks? Or just two no matter how many decks ? Or just leave the two jokers from each deck are in there so there are actually 4 total if playing with two decks?
I bought the 4th edition for my kid, as I had played 2nd edition during primary school and loved it. I thougt the plastic figures would be a step up.. but man, the artwork has nothing on the old Gary Chalk 2nd edition illustrations.. especially the character art is a step down... take the warrior for example - instead of an ironclad halberd-wielding badass we have a sorry-ass bent over guy in what is apparently not a fighting stance 🤦 Also the game board - simple illustrations served the purpose better. And instead of warlock, there is just his cave on the game plan 😃 But I had the same feeling when I looked up the new version of Lone Wolf gamebooks, the new illustrations have nothing on the old Gary Chalk art. Dissapointment again. Apparently it is hard to beat him. His art had a special effect on the atmosphere of the game. I still have the 2nd edition in very good shape though 😊

There’s a reason why after all these years and games it’s still in my top 10.
I really enjoy playing Talisman. I hear that there is an RPG game of Talisman. Great video! Blessings to you
I love Talisman! Great video!
Such a fun and simple game.
This brings back so many memories! Thankyou so much!
Sure thing! Thanks for watching.

The Dungeon Dive very nice!!!
@@TheDungeonDive will try out those too. When do you re-draw cards? Once all 6 have been used?
Great game, I used to play with my friends, now I play it with my kids...I'm still the undefeated champion though 😏
Good day! Where can I find your set of solo rules for Talisman?
They are available as a perk for Dungeon Dive patrons.

It's a very flawed and dated game that a lot of us have played a ton of and love to death. Both of these things can be true at the same time! :)

one deck per player, minimum of 2 decks is how I usually play.

I think you’re thinking of DungeonQuest. Might be wrong though.
