Sorry, I'm not usually a rules lawyer, but you forgot a few key rules. First off, the main reason it was so hard for you guys is the fact that if the scale does NOT match the dragon king, then encountering the scale is OPTIONAL! Second the attack bonus and discarding to ignore the dragon rage only work if the scale and card/king colors match. Thirdly, you can stack the sleep tokens on the dragon cards (I only forget whether the minimum attack is either three or one). Last but not least, for those who have played the expansion for a while, if you are wanting a little bit more length, you can make the dragon tower a separate board, where landing on the crown space in the inner region transports you to the first space in the tower. Thanks for reading, and thanks bottled imp for making a review of my favorite expansion.
Thanks for pointing those out Hermit. Most welcome if I forget things or get things wrong. Means others can read this to get the full picture. Glad you're liking our Talisman reviews. Only 3 expansions to go!
Great review, Bottled Imp!!! For this expansion, my group and I have "House Ruled" our characters as if we're using runestones in the digital edition of Talisman! All of our characters begin with no less than 5 Strength and 5 Craft. It helped make the onslaught a bit more tolerable!!! Keep up the good work!!!
+JemyM Thanks Jemy. glad you like our review. Yeah, it's fairly hard to understand the rules plus it's brutal! We worked out the best way to play it, is to avoid the Dragons as best you can for the early part of the game while you level up your characer and play with one mayber two corner expansions with one one or two mini expansions like The Reaper and The Harbinger. That way thing don't get too crazy!
Fantastic review again. May I suggest Sir, that you may do a video on Talisman expansions, discussing your fav, essential ones to play with, and expansions to start with. Thank you
+Zewen Zhang Thanks Zewen. Yeah, we've thought about doing that. Might be that we finish reviewing all of the expansions - we've only 1 big one and 3 little ones left - then do an overall review like you say. Thanks for your suggestion.
Fantastic! I've been wanting your review for this expansion for a long time. Do you plan on doing a review for the two micro sized expansions Neither Realm and Deep Realm?
Question. We have dragon scale on the map, character encounter it, it's an event/stranger/place. What is happening to the scale? Same with enemy - is it binded to the enemy?
I imagine that the minstrel from the base game would be very good against dragons from this expansion, considering his special ability that stops dragons from attacking him.
+The Bottled Imp oh and I meant to say I played Dungeonquest the other week. I got the new Fantasy Flight one. Hadn't played it in around 25 years. Boy it's tough. As merciless as I remember. Awesome though
+The Bottled Imp note to self. I really need to conduct a major card shuffling operation for Talisman. The cards were so atrocious we were getting no where after 5 hours!!!
Ofc it’s brutal, you’re supposed to fight some badass dragons haha Btw, thanks to these guides I can actually understand what’s going on with some expansions when I play Talisman online!
OMG OMG OMG OMG and WOWWWW absolutely unbelievable expansion and what a another brilliant review you have done as well as add some golden nugget suggestions. When I first saw this expansion, I thought it was one board (single sided), another 15 or 20 adventure cards, 3 endings and 4 more characters. Well, I'm totally lost for words and now see why it's priced similar to some stand alone games. With a few small changes, you could play this on its own. Just adding some counters and a few more cards has transformed the original Crown of Command, to what seems like another 5 levels. As for your review, I found it so brilliant and as close to detail as you could get it, that I'm off to have another look 😊 Top marks as always Ken, brilliant,Terry
+Terry Bass Thanks Terry. Glad you like our review. It was a beast to do as it's a beast to play! Yes, adds more levels of play. Not for the faint hearted!
I have Talisman with 6 expansions and it was always my fav since childhood even i played it like 5 times maybe till now( got the 2nd hand game with most adds from buddy last year only). The problem I have now - in my board games group we have a guy who owns almost 50 games so we almost dont play my Talisman. Yesterday I bought on steam Talisman Digital Edition with 75% discount and boy its fun. I don't need nobody, there always several online games going in few servers If not I can play with computer or some1 else in my screen. All expansions to buy, in digital version extra unique heroes, upgrades if u want, achievments. Damn its's cool especially with sounds effects :) Came to learn how the dragons work here :P
Good stuff Daniel. Thanks for watching The Bottled Imp. Yeah, Talisman is a lot of fun but can take several hours to play so a lot of people don't want to play it. Glad you've found the digital edition. Nomad Games have done an excellent job with it. By the way, we've a Facebook group, search Facebook for The Bottled Imp Fellowship, click the Join button, and we'll add you in.
Several hours... tell me that I played today all night till like 6am and then from 10 am till 4pm so far with break for shoping and food now :P Thx for sugestion about group good idea. Very cool nickname for a games geek as well - funny and ingenious; I like the intro with green smoke as to ^_^ . I wish you only lucky dice tosses :)
Just a thought: because the Minstrel in the base game can avoid dragons and I believe fight them without the dragons fighting back, wouldn't he have the advantage in this expansion?
Ken, I have now purchased the Dragon Expansion and can't believe how much we get for our money, but I have two questions which are kind of the same, regarding the Dragon Realm side of the board overlay. To the left of the Plain of Peril is the Dragonstone Mines and to the right is the DragonBone Crypt. The results on both spaces range 0 to 6+, do I assume that our final scores after rolling 3 dice etc, needs to be less than 0, other wise I cant see how we can move on, or should our final scores be higher than 6+... the "+" is confusing me :-))
Great review. Cleared up a few things I wasn't getting with the rules of this one. :) Dragon is my least played expansion for Talisman because my friends usually opt not to play with it because we usually use EVERY other expansion during our games of Talisman and the mechanic of dragon scales is a bit too much to keep track of amongst everything else.Out of curiosity, Ken, which is your favourite alternative ending from Dragon expansion?
+GreenDinoRanger Thanks Green. Yeah, the rules are a little complicated and that can put people off like you say. We found it adds a lot more to remember and it's brutal too. Best way to play it I recon would be with one or two corner boards and maybe The Reaper or The Harbinger expasions as that curbs how comlicated the game can get. Favourite Dragon Expansion ending would have to be Dragon King as it's the most simple of the 3. There is enough to remember so this one keeps the winning conditons simple. It's still a tough way to win though as the Draogn Kiing is Strenght 12, Craft 12 with 5 Lives. Plus you have to roll a die for varying outcomes. What's yours?
Great review ! I think I will love this expansion as it gives a bit of depht to the game ! Maybe it is a little too much game changer as the board would surely get filled with dragon scales and dragons, but maybe I can house rule it a bit. For example drawing dragon tokens only on a 6 on the dice for movement, and placing them directly on the board... this would lower the difficulty a lot I think.
+Andrea Thannks Andrea. Yeah, certainly adds new and different levels and is unlike any other of the expansions. House Rule is a good idea. Let me know how you get on with that.
Ok, we have played a game of 3 players with the following expansions: reaper, frostmarch, dungeon, highlands, sacred pool, nether realm and DRAGON. We used the gauntlet alternative ending from the nether realms, and we house ruled to draw dragon tokens only on 2 or 3 on the dice for movement (so it was 1 for the reaper, 2 and 3 for drawing dragon tokens). It worked perfectly, the game was smooth and the dragon cards were present but not invading the board like drawing tokens on every turn. So I'm very happy with my purchase and my simple house rule :D
I was playing today Dragons + Mountains + Reaper and one question bothered me. What happens when on the start king is changing - you put a dragon scale but there on the space is already one scale in that color f.e red? Do you simply keep 2 scales with same color there ? Expansion is great but anoying that some1 need to keep on eye and remind others to draw dragon tokens/switch dragon crown. Board is more pleasing but digital version make game is so much faster and more enjoable when AI automaticly sort everything for you - all strenght/craft pawns, coins, fate, limit of items.... Game do the dirty work and players can focus on strategy and expierience
Great combination of expansions! On page 8 of The Dragon rules it stats 'When a third dragon scale is placed on a Draconic Lord, he is immediately crowned the new Dragon King and the Crown token is placed on his card as a reminder of his status. The character then takes one dragon scale from the Dragon King's card and places it on the character's space. If the space already has a dragon scale, it is placed in the next space counterclockwise that does not already have a dragon scale. If every space in the Region already has a dragon scale, the dragon scale is discarded and the character must suffer the Dragon Rage of the Dragon King instead." Yes, that's the downside to The Dragon Expansion, remembering all the bits and pieces to do!
@@thebottledimp I read rules yestereday, hear you said that in the video but it's wasn't rejesistered by my brain as and answer :D Maybe I better start sleep longer than 5/6 hours before going to work. I know it's stupid but tend to repeat same mistake :D
I just wanted to mention, this was my first expansion, and it went very well. No one died. It felt very fair, and I'm fairly certain that you are not meant to start drawing dragon cards asap. There are 6 dragon rage tokens among 140 and it wasn't that bad. Perhaps with more people you could reduce the amount as to balance it.
+Brandon Young Good stuff Brandon! Sounds like you nailed it. We got a little carried away and wanted to encounter Dragon Cards. Not the best thing to do we soon learnt!

Oi Ken? Hi🙂 So I can make it to the middle of the game board and then skip to the Dragon Tower realm turn over the board make it through The Dragon's Fun House and win the game then now mate!?
my friend, I play the digital edition put out by Nordic games. The game is rigged and I can prove this showing how broken it is. I'm going to be making a video to display just how broken it is. If you can give me an email I will provide you with a link to this issue they see no problem with.
+TherealCCChasarrived Interesting. If you go to The Bottled Imp website and send the link through the contact form. When you say rigged, what do you mean exactly?
The Bottled Imp i have not made a video yet. What I mean by rigged is that our dice rolls are not by chance it is an illusion. Before you start a game, there is an algorithm process that randomly generates rolls. All the dice rolls are decided when you start the game on a behind the scenes virtual list and if you go through that list it'll start over again. The system is called the WELL512a RNG algorithm. When playing the digital version, take your turn(offline), use as many rolls as you can in your turn, write those numbers down. Before you hit end turn just close the game (it'll auto save to the beginning of your turn). reopen the game and again take your turn and you will see for yourself that all the rolls no matter what happens on the board, will yield the same dice rolls. This knowledge can be used to manipulate the game to ones benefit. Also the algorithm is the reason when a person rerolls for fate, they often get the same dice roll. It is a flawed design put in place instead of a true random number generator in an attempt to stop people from taking advantage of the game when in fact it does the opposite. Regardless I love the digital game despite this and a few other glitches I know they are working on to fix. I will not say how to completely break this system and become "The Oracle of Dice Rolls" for the whole game, but with what I've said , anyone reading this can take my words and figure it out if they are smart enough, to beat the system. I must also apologize for my previous comment to some extent, it is not Nordic games, it is Nomad games. Try what I've said for yourself, no video is needed from me you'll see.
+TherealCCChasarrived Thank for explaining this in greater detail. So it seems the actual generation of dice rolls are random, it's just if you quit the game and return that is the problem as it starts the sequence from the top again? I guess if you know this then in order not to spoil your fun, you wouldn't do this. Have you told Nomad about this?
The Bottled Imp they are not random they are pre-decided. It does not start over at the top of the order. if you leave and come back, it resumes the list of Dice Rolls where you left so the rolls will be exactly the same as they were before you quit. example, you roll a 6 for movement, you move clockwise and draw an enemy. In battle you roll a 1 and the enemy rolls a six, you re-roll using fate and roll another 1 then quit the game. You load that game back up, it's the start of your turn again. You took a 6 for movement, but this time you know the next order of Dice are going to be 1-6-1 no matter what happens on the board those rolls are just going through a pre-determined list. The system does a good job of simulating a random roll except when it comes to using fate. The algorithm only generates numbers on the list from 1 to 6 like the die. This causes fate rolls to often be the same result as the initial roll. You will see numerous people complaining about the rolls in reviews across all platforms and across all the games they've released digitally. They put the program in their games so yes they are aware of it, but they seem to think it helps prevent skewing the game and it does online but playing locally with friends this system can be severely compromised to mold the game to your will. There are ways to know what every roll will be in the game from beginning to the end.
