This song is an example how to dim the guitar and when it comes back, it blows the hinges away and it feels rewarding for the listener. Tuomas really knows what he's doing.
Hi Both. This is possibly one of the greatest songs of all time. As a metal fan of more than 50 years and a Nightwish fan of 20.. This is just MAJESTIC.
Great reaction! You know, we as Nightwish fans always talk about; ‘The Big Three’, which means; Ghost Love Score, The Poet And The Pendulum and The Greatest Show On Earth. I don't know what you guys think when I say the following; "This song turns 'The Big Three' into 'The Big Four". I think this is one of the best pieces of music ever composed/written. Thank you Tuomas!
Great reaction you two! Always nice to follow your feelings and notes. BUT - that said - be prepared for my personal song of the year 2024 and best on the album: Lanternlight. Make sure you have a huge packet of tissues nearby, it will melt your soul! Greetings from Germany
Another great reaction! Love Alanna's insights. Like the other releases from this album, this song has taken several listens for me to really start hearing everything going on. I was kind of overwhelmed the first time I heard it and lyrically, I have to admit I was kind of lost and went to the Nightwish Reddit page to see what others thought. Everyone was pretty much seeing the song as a metaphor for a person's journey through life and the strange islands are the people we meet along the way. Classic Tuomas to use the ocean as a metaphor for our life's journey. Tuomas in an interview has said "The song actually has a triple meaning. I hope people will read the lyrics and find their interpretations of the song. I do want the listeners to interpret it themselves. However, I can share a little anecdote: I remember the moment when I conceived the idea for this song and felt so excited - oh yes - this is going to be a great adventure. I took a big A4 sheet of paper and made a drawing on it. Throughout the time I was composing “An Ocean Of Strange Islands”, that drawing remained on my music stand. I won’t reveal what was in that drawing, though." Tuomas and his wife, Johanna Kurkela, have a tradition on New Years where they draw a map where each Island represents a goal or a dream that they wish to achieve. A number of people thought that one of the meaning's of the song was Tuomas's journey and experiences in Nightwish. I really liked Apple60's interpretation. "A mariner (Tuomas) sets sail towards islands (=goals and dreams), with a few decades of immortality ahead (28 years of NW). Monsters and hurricanes complicate this journey, causing a shipwreck for a pair of lovers along the way (Tarja/Marcelo reference?).. He meets jokers, jesters, and goddesses (new band members). He begs for help navigating the waters. He then sails upon an island of the past wrecks, which is full of dangers (poisonous hemlock meadows, deepest quicksand). This island represents past mistakes. He is reminded of someone who used to be a friend but the friendship has now soured. Still, after all of this he doesn't regret visiting any of the islands (Still, I rue no island). I think the you referenced in the song actually stands for Nightwish. -An island of the past wrecks, of you, of the endless sundown (sundown=night). -You who glow, in deepest woe (Reminds me of the line All of my songs can only be composed of the greatest of pains). Let it be, retiree, the water's fine, sail carefree = After visiting the islands (living through the experiences of NW), Tuomas finally comes to the conclusion of "don't worry, continue the journey". This could be a message for himself, or possibly for Marko". I think the Monsters and Hurricanes aren't specifically about Tarja but is a literary allusion to all who have been obstacles or tried to impede the progress of the band and their art. In the end we all get to find our own meaning as Tuomas has always desired of his fans!
Each butterfly representing an island of a relationship each relationship that comes and goes into and out of your life. Did you notice at the end the small group of butterflies gathered at the top of the mass? Tuomas added the only color in the video besides grey/black and white signifying the close circle of people in your life that stick with you.
Keep in mind - Floor had Lucy and then a few more weeks, then she recorded the album songs. They allocated six weeks - Floor finished them in six DAYS. She had practiced them before, but yeah. The people came to her household studio for her to record the album.
Kai was really given free hands this time. I was listening to his interview on a podcast and he said that finally you can hear his own style on the album. In Endless Forms he had to pretty much copy Jukka's style since it was uncertain whether he was coming back or not. In Human Nature he was getting there but in Yesterwynde he feels this is what he does best. Tuonela Magazine wrote in a review that Kai is the mvp of the album. I have to agree with that. For me this song is the best I've heard in years.
We need drum cams from a lot of songs on this album, including close up of his double pedal technique (I think he uses 2 pedals)! (And guitar cams, bass guitar cams, keyboard cams).
Great reaction to one of Nightwish best songs ever. Kai and Jukka shine throughout the album like never before. Can't wait to see you react to Lanternlight and then the whole album. Cheers!🤙🤘
Love this musical journey ❤❤❤ After Lanterlight, fir me the best track on the new album! Great concert opener or closer 😁 Would be awesome live with a full orchestra and choir❣️
I just love this song, it has quite easily become my favorite. Especially I like the huge number of comments that mention which other Nightwish song's vibe people hear in this one. I am no different. To me it's Scaretale (when Floor adds that witchy laughter) and Tribal (the part just before Troy and his pipes come in). In the comments you can find songs from all Nightwish eras and that let to the interpretation of this song being about the journey through Nightwish's "life".
Themes running through Nightwish album Yesterwynde - the journey of life, timeless, petrichor (which ties in with the imagery in this lyric video too - butterflies are reborn from caterpillars, emerge from their cocoons, fly all over feasting on nectar but can feast on the world’s decay too! But wear does the butterfly go when it rains? Butterflies don’t venture out into wild oceans & storms either. Things change along the journey. Then, after the storms have passed, and land is approaching, the birds can be seen flying, all is calm again on the journey. Seeking a “star bound quay”. **** - “Sail and seek The starbound quay Calling you, calling me To be a part of your story” ***** During interviews for this album release Tuomas spoke of a blissful evening on a boat, in a tranquil quay staring up at a star filled sky - he said it was the most peaceful & beautiful experience he has ever encountered. I remember Alanna's first appearance .. tentative and not sure of herself .. talk about blossoming!! She is now a serious, fully in charge adult with the hyperactive teen next to her :)
This was an awesome song, for me it's like the three eras of Nightwish were smooshed into one song, Dark Chest of Wonders vibe with a bit of Imaginaerum vibes there and also Endless Forms Most Beautiful vibes. I interpreted several things here. For example the word "goddesses" is in feminine plural, so I got that as that Tuomas was referring to the 3 lead singers. And "the tempest following the quintet", I'd say it would be when either Tarja or Anette was around, since back then, they were five on the band (Now six, with Troy) And then the "retiree" part refers to Marko.
Hi, 74 years old hippie from the Netherlands =Floor, Irene, Simone, Anneke, Dianne, Charlotte, Sharon, Marcella, Joost (LUL) & Arjen (Ayreon) Country= reporting in: Alanna, in the end, did you noticed the bird among the butterflies ...???🤘
i love this song, its such a grand journey, i actually think i put this song in my top 5 Nightwish songs ever, cause unlike songs like the poet and the pendulum, or the greatest show on earth, this one is one i listen to again, and again in studio version, where the others i mainly watch the live videos, and its not that those are not as good, there is just something that makes this one more easy to go throgh on a playlist somehow, well the whole album is a masterpiece, Nightwish did it again!! Would i dare try make a top 5 Nightwish songs, well i know its not easy, but i give it a go still, this is only based on studio versions, not any live performances ok. 1. Dark chest of wonders 2. And there is 7 songs from the new album, that surprised myself to.
Tim Burton rapidly change to Tuomas Holopainen!🎸🤘The ocean represents life and the islands are people and situations that we come across on the journey.🎸🤘
I did enjoy the first couple of singles, but this is the one that blew my mind and made me instantly preorder Yesterwynde. Definitely one of my favourites from the album, along with _Lanternlight_ and a couple that don't have videos yet. As a whole, the album is somewhere in my top three alongside Endless Forms and Imaginaerum. I can't be more specific yet, because it's too new so it still has the initial excitement but not yet the comfortable familiarity.
This album kinda feels like a hybrid between Nightwish and Auri. Quite beautiful. I'll just say one word... Lanternlight. Loved the little butterfly trivia.
Tuomas déjà vu themes. Did you catch the shout-outs? "The Butterfly Effect"? [Nice reference to Abbey Road Studios] Film scores (Tuomas and Floor both like the music of Hans Zimmer). “Saaaaail and Seeeeek!” That's what I was waiting for! As John Wick once said: “Yeah, I’m thinking I’m back!" That was crunchy and chunky... Is it over? "Titanic" vibes from Troy, letting his Uilleann pipes speak across the centuries. How does it have that effect on us? The calm after the storm. Even the listener has a challenge. The Butterflies were following the perfume (of the timeless!)?
Hi both, I do love your insight and I have a comment about "Lord of a single fly" but I will hold it until you have listened to the album 😁 Great reaction as usual, too bad the sound was breaking now and again when Alanna spoke 😔 One of the greatest songs by Nightwish and I am such a newbie on that journey. Yesterwyne is a masterpiece and this is all I will say about it 🥰 Greetings from Paris!
Hello both of you, great reaction. The songs where recorded 6 weeks after Floor give birth to her little girl. Here body wasn't healthy at all. Look at the interview Floor gave to Elizabeth from the charismatic voice. 1 our and 42 min of talking about everything. Greetings from the Netherlands 🇳🇱 , keep up the good work 👍
One way to look this magnificent piece of music is to go some 50 years back in time and listen King Crimson song Islands ruclips.net/video/jY7dbRyoHfE/видео.html Think of those thoughts behind. Music is not near to each others but the sense is like dad and son talking about us living and what does it mean. This just came to my mind when listening aoosi, 'cause at a that time gone i use to dig this song and the message behind.
Listened to this song with you for first time now. For me it's weakest song of four songs Nightwish put on their channel. It sounds very similar to many songs from previous HN album. There seems to be an orchestra, everything sounds clear, but it's faded and unemotional. Maybe Floore didn't do a good job vocally in this song. But other 3 songs on this album Lanternlight, The Day Of.... and Perfume Of The Timeless are very good. I'm already happy that this album didn't turn out to be a failure like the previous HN album.
This is an epic symphonic prog metal Masterpiece. 😎🤘
Great reaction both of you. I must say, Alanna is such a mindful listener. Everything she says is gold.
the album as a whole is fantastic.
Kai confirmed that the "retiree" part is about Marco. Simply beautiful.
Omg, this makes me tear up. ❤
interesting, I would have thought it's Jukka, since he actually retired from performing completely, while Marco is still continuing solo..
@@aronvanselm6561 Jukka still works with Nighwish tho
Tuomas wrote it in 2021 when Marko had just left and in his own words retired from the industry @@aronvanselm6561
Been looking forward to you guys finally getting to the album, its a grower but a true masterpiece, I think you're gonna love it 🤘
Great reaction! You know, we as Nightwish fans always talk about; ‘The Big Three’, which means; Ghost Love Score, The Poet And The Pendulum and The Greatest Show On Earth. This song, like whole Yesterwynde album gets better with every listen...Tuomas is just genius writer.
The album getting better every time. Kai is amazing on the drums, a chalange for him
Great reaction you two! Always nice to follow your feelings and notes.
BUT - that said - be prepared for my personal song of the year 2024 and best on the album: Lanternlight. Make sure you have a huge packet of tissues nearby, it will melt your soul!

Love this song more and more the more I listen. Top 3 on the album for me. Glad to see you guys doing well and back doing Nightwish together.

As always: great reaction from both of you!
Butterflies do fly over the sea, and they can be seen resting on boats or oil rigs!
Great reaction. One of my favorite songs from the album but Lanternlight is probably my favorite overall
I remember Alanna’s first exposure to Nightwish
I am smiling a happy smile to see how intimately familiar she has become with the band members 😎

It always takes several digestions and marinating with NW. I want to see this one live so bad!
Tuomas organizes a moment for everyone to shine here .... just a genius work again. Good reaction and reasoning too.
Love this musical journey ❤❤❤
After Lanterlight, fir me the best track on the new album!
Great concert opener or closer 😁

An "ocean soul" writting a song of an "ocean".
🤘😁🇫🇮💙🪄🎼✨💯👍
It`s pronounced Yesterwynde, like wind, not wine`d ;) it`s like yester(day)wynde(wind... as a winding path) - the path to yesterday
To call this a song is almost a downgrade IMO, this is a composition a Masterpiece

This song is about kids missing from somalia or africa with a blend of lords of the fly.
Such an masterpiece best track from the album
Listened to this song with you for first time now. For me it's weakest song of four songs Nightwish put on their channel. It sounds very similar to many songs from previous HN album. There seems to be an orchestra, everything sounds clear, but it's faded and unemotional. Maybe Floore didn't do a good job vocally in this song. But other 3 songs on this album Lanternlight, The Day Of.... and Perfume Of The Timeless are very good. I'm already happy that this album didn't turn out to be a failure like the previous HN album.
