So, one thing I hoped you picked up on. "Glittering Prizes and endless compromises shatter the illusion to integrity" Back then the music was, for the most part, musician driven. Today it is producer driven. Rush wanted to play what they wanted to play, and they almost lost their record deal because the label wanted more radio friendly music and not long anthems. Rush said eff it and made what they wanted to make and came out with the album 2112. And the rest is history, the label accepted every album they made after that. No questions asked! The true definition of "Integrity" from the lyric I shared earlier!
Every single Rush song is completely different to every other Rush song. Check out a few more of their shorter, more accessible tunes (Limelight, Subdivisions, Freewill), and then you might be ready for the sublime magnificence that is the Exit Stage Left live version of 'Xanadu'. Also, check out Neil Peart's (pronounced PEERT, not Pert) drum solo live in Frankfurt. All will blow your mind.
Xanadu Live 1981 - a song off their 1977 album performed by them a few years later. If you want to see what Rush was capable live, that's the place to start. I think damn near every fan will agree! After that, Subdivisions live. And Rush liked to fit the music with the theme of the songs. In this one, the super fast transition simulated turning the radio knob through the stations. In a song about trees, the drummer spends portions playing wooden blocks. In a song about luck and taking chances, they included a rap section. In a song about the Holocaust and victims, there's an eerie, ghostly harmonic guitar solo. But they also knew when to reign it in and let the lyrics take center stage such as a song about teenage suicide, or the Manhattan Project. Every 5 or so years they changed directions and genres ; Hard Rock to start, Epic Concept albums for a few years, Mainstream radio friendly for the next few years, New Wave for a period, a bit of Pop for a couple years, Grunge for a while, Metal/hard Rock and then back to a Concept album for the last bit of their career. 40 years of constant change kept them relevant and active vs these other groups that retired 20 years ago and always seem to perpetually "reunite" for a final tour. And remember - only 3 guys are making all of that music!
I think you get it right away - “these are positive guys”. So many of their songs are encouraging, build you up, encourage you to think for yourself and be your own master, or seek to expose injustice. I think that’s why you will find the Rush community is overwhelmingly positive - they attract people with a similar ethos. Try the song Closer to the Heart for a good example. Cheers!
In your exploration of this amazing group, don't be afraid to pause, back up, and re-listen. There's so much going on with their songs: meaningful lyrics, skillful instrumentals, and complex rhythms and sounds. There's no way you'll notice it all with the first listen. Also, these guys are never predictable; good luck trying to find the correct time to pause!
YYZ Live in Rio is a great showcase for Neil Peart, the drummer. It's also a great showcase for Alex and Geddy. Just three genius guys ripping into their instruments.
The song started out as a tribute to a Toronto radio station with the first verse, but later changed to a response to the underhanded record/radio industry of the late 70's! This video was made around RUSH's 30 year anniversary. Frankfurt Germany Neil's solo from the R30 tour!
Live show? These guys KILL IT live. You won’t believe how much sound three dudes can put out. They are still, to this day, the best live show I’ve ever experienced. Working Man - live in Cleveland 2011 YYZ - live in Rio - this is an instrumental track. Enjoy!
Another great reaction…. So good to see a new generation expanding their horizons to music. Another reaction from another channel described it the best , RUSH has its own genre and that YYZ is a work of art, something you listen to like looking at a work of art…. Again, so many songs to list, the Trees, Camera Eye, Time Stand Still, Witch Hunt, Red Sector A, Marathon and one my favourites Analog Kid. Every song listed is timeless… I have listened to these over the past 40 years… enjoying it more watching reactions like yours👍👍👍
Rebel, if you want to see a song where the drummer, Neil Peart, goes off and solos, then look at the video with this title: "Rush - Malignant Narcissism / De Slagwerker (Snakes & Arrows Live)" This has an instrumental song -- Malignant Narcissism -- which sets up an extended Neil Peart drum solo that you will LOVE!! This is an amazing performance from the band!
The head editor at Rolling Stone magazine once wrote an article addressing a subject many rafters had requested: the the editor pick the greatest music group, picking from every artist, producer, etc that ever existed. So the editor penned this article. In the first paragraph he said “ I have to automatically disqualify any member of Rush as it is not fair to the other artists.” True story. You can look for the article.
Geddy Lee is lead singer and Bass.Neil Peart is drummer ... he left us at a young age. I've seen RUSH live a couple times in Canada. Check out "April Wine" and of course my favourite "Dire Straits" Sultans of Swing.
YYZ live in Rio to see the whole band or Neil's drum solo live in Berlin for the genius of the man they refer to as "the Professor". Alternatively, you could watch their set from the SARS benefit concert in their home city of Toronto. If you want more live stuff, Metallica - Enter Sandman live in Moscow (1991?) and Chris Stapleton -Tennessee Whiskey live n Austin (I think it was the City Lights festival). Enjoy!
This video was made to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the album for which it was the first track. It's basically a combination of the career of the band's drummer/lyricist, who had just died earlier in that same year (2020), with a very short history of the development of radio broadcasting. There was a tribute image at the end of the video, but you must have a quick trigger finger! The video was made in 2020. The cause of death was a rare brain cancer called glioblastoma. Tragically, he received the diagnosis less than a year after his retirement in the summer of 2015. One of the primary reasons for his retiring was to spend more time with his primary-school-age daughter. Back around 1997, he had suffered the death of his first daughter in a traffic accident, as well as the death of his wife, about nine months later. Thanks to a good gene match, he was able to last until early January 2020, but it's obviously still very sad. PS - I just lost my dad to glioblastoma on Christmas Day, but at least he had lived a full life, dying, just a couple of months short of his 85th birthday.
Live Rush is the best Rush, because you see how just three performers can make so much sound, especially given the complexity of Rush's music. As for the drummer, the late, great Neil Peart, he is widely considered to have been one of the best drummers of all time. By way of example, he was inducted into Modern Drummer Magazine's Hall of Fame in 1983 - just nine years into playing for Rush! He was voted best drummer of the year for seven consecutive years between 1980 and 1986, after which he was placed on the Magazine's "Honor Roll" so that somebody else might have a chance to win. He also appeared on the magazine's cover a record ten times during his career. There are lots of videos of Neil Peart drum solos, which will have inspired any drummer you've seen performing his/her own solo. Because links placed in comments usually get removed by RUclips, I need to give you search terms instead. My personal favourite is from 1980. The solo comes in the middle of Rush's instrumental, "YYZ" (from the same album as Tom Sayer). But if you pick it, you still must react to the live version of YYZ everybody prefers (which was performed in Rio in 2001). Search for this exact phrase: "YYZ" & Neil Peart Drum Solo Remastered 1988" If you'd prefer to react to the crowd favourite of Peart's solos instead, just type in: "Neil Peart Drum Solo Frankfurt" ... and you'll find it instead.
Cool channel. This is the first time I’ve come across someone so new. I feel experienced enough as a viewer to warn you that you will get roasted interrupting a solo (or in Rush’s case, rarely solos but instrumentals). Good reactions. I would suggest two more of their more radio and catchy songs Freewill (live-Exit Stage Left). Freewill also contains a pretty wild instrumental and Limelight (any version works) before moving onto their more elaborate, experimental music where Rush fans are really made or broken. They’re not for everyone and that showed when they were passed over for decades to get into the R&R Hall of fame. I subbed. Good luck with your channel.
Hey man, just found you. The people named in the video were radio disk jockeys who played music on radio stations back in the day. One of the ones that you see in the video is named Donna Halper. She was the person who is cited to have "discovered" Rush first from Cleveland Ohio.
Just subbed. I really enjoyed your reaction. As others have mentioned this song gives tribute to a radio station they enjoyed and then talked about the underbelly of the music industry. Rush refused to play their game and called them out on it. All the different change ups in the music represent different radio stations. The reference to pirate radio is about back in the 60's ( I remember because I am old LOL) where in Britain they wouldn't allow rock music on the radio so the DJs set up stations on boats. There is a movie called Pirate Radio. You may want to check it out. Some live performances YYZ live in Rio 🤯🤯 La Villa Strangiato official music video ( no audience but done live ) A masterpiece based on nightmares that Alex Lifeson the guitarist had especially when they were on tour. Red Barchetta from Exit Stage Left The Trees official music video Again, no audience but done live. Digital man from the Snakes and Arrows tour Cheers 🇨🇦
Celebration of the power and community of Radio 📻, At the same time a scathing critique of the Music industry. Epic writing. Neil Peart (Drummer 🥁) wrote most of Rush's lyrics I believe.
So you like drum solos, huh? Check out Neil Peart’s solo from Frankfurt. There’s many other great solo recordings as well - the 1988 solo in the middle of YYZ is another great one. Peart was a gifted percussionist and one of the absolute best rock drummers of all time.
An homage to radio. no one these days can understand how important radio was to us. I’ve said it many times, but I’ll say it again. This is the only way we got music. End of story. There were a few shows on television, but they were usually very mainstream. Don’t get me wrong. There were some fabulous performances on some great shows the old gray whistle test. Soul train. Midnight special and Austin city limits all had excellent production value. So those live performances are definitely worth visiting, but back to radio we didn’t have access to Music unless we went to a record store and bought a record. Or listen to our brothers record collection or had a friend who brought their new record over and said oh you gotta hear this. There were not new music releases every day. When singles were released it was before the album came out even if you wanted the album you could not get it so if you wanted to hear your favorite song, you had to call the radio station! Have you ever heard someone say something like? “ DJ play my favorite song.?” That’s what that means you’re not talking about a DJ standing in front of an audience with a record player scratching and mixing They’re talking about literally calling the radio station and asking them to play a song that you wanna hear. Pirate radio Mexican radio. Super important you should educate yourself about that. It’s too long the story for me to tell here, but for those of us in border states those border blasters? Were super super important.
Do some Jethro Tull. They were a big influence on Rush, particularly their album 'Thick as a Brick' which was a 45 min song which actually reached number 1 on the charts in 1972. Imagine that today, a 45 min song reaching number 1, that would be insane. There is a great condensed 15 min version of it live in 1977 which is a popular reaction selection, you will not be disappointed. I love Rush, but my fave band is Jethro Tull, they were amazing on vinyl but when it came to live performances, they did things no one else was doing. They influenced Rush, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Dio, Pearl Jam ... they are essential listening IMO.
Thanks for doing what you do. I'm looking out to find new music and it seems like you are too! So you got a new fan and a new sub for me. Keep doing what you're doing brother.
Hey my man, great start to this. You got a good enthusiasm and do well for your music "illiteracy". Rush is one of our main canadian prides. Since you mentioned your ear for drums, wanna drop another Canadian band that might match you. I Mother Earth. I suppose starting with the song One More Astronaut (most popular and many drum-driven sections). They are not as known but an extremely unique sound but dont get no love. I feel this channel gonna boom so Ill try and drop this now:)
And use the official music video version. It is a live piece, just no audience. This is my personal favourite song of all time. Perfect in every possible way.
Hell, yeah man… Just literally found your channel like 10 minutes ago. Watched Tom Sawyer now I’m digging your second reaction to Rush. I grew up listening to Rush and it is awesome to see young dudes like you getting into it - learning about the instruments and digging the positive messages in the lyrics. I’m sure someone’s already said that The Professor, Neil Peart on the drums, wrote a lot of the lyrics. I’ve got some suggestions for other bands that I grew up with, but also some newer, young bands that you might dig especially if you like guitar… If I’m gonna single out one right now, it would be Polyphia and the song would be Playing God. And definitely if you’re gonna watch a live one by Rush you MUST to YYZ live in Rio. Crowd is fkn nuts - first time seen such dedicated fans that they are singing along with an instrumental song. Keep up the good work, man - I’m digging your vibe. 🤘🏻🎧🤟🏼
If you're looking to dive into the Rush rabbit-hole, then I'd suggest having a listen to "LImelight" and "Red Sector A". That'll get you started. Then if you want to go to the more advanced level, check out Neil Peart's (pronounced "Peer-t", not "Purt") drum solo Live in Frankfurt, and the band's performance of "Working Man", live in Cleveland. The names displayed in the video are some of the DJ's that played Rush's music early in their career, and got them on the airwaves in the States to kickstart their career - a kind of "thank you" by the band and fans. The shifts in tempo and styles are reminescent of flipping along the radio dial looking for different songs.
You're absolutely right in calling it a riff. What you've interpreted in the song, and from the song, is what it means according to *your* perspective here in the matrix. And that's beautiful. 65 here - one of my regrets in life was missing this concert on tour in-town as a teenager, due to getting a massive sinus infection! 420 joints were passed down the rows at the rock venues back then, everyone toking, and you didn't want to go feeling sick or to pass it on to others.
Since your enjoying Rush so much you should watch Neil Peart the drummers video it’s live from Frankfurt and prob the best drum solo ever recorded. RIP Neil Peart.🇨🇦👍🏻🇨🇦
Ok if you like the guitar solo its time for Working Man Live in Cleveland and you can see Alex and Geddy do dueling solos. Two of the best just going nuts.
Enjoyed the reaction and the enthusiasm! You talked about sick - If you want to blow your mind listen to Stevie Ray Vaughan Texas Flood live at the Mocambo - must be this version!! He is one of the top Guitarists on the Mount Rushmore of Rock. 🎸
I recommended this last time, and will repeat it now, with another song... "Bring Me to Life" by Evanescence. The other song is "My Immortal" by the same group... You don't have to do them together, but it would be great if you did them in that order... You see, I want the singer to steal your heart in the first song, so she can more completely break it in the second song. ...And trust me, you will love every painful minute! ;-]
Oh, I wish they had left Geddy's "hand-talk" gesture out of the video. That is a "Fan Service" thing for those who have seen Rush in concert that no one experiencing them for the first time now would have any idea about, so it's confusing. But, oh well, moving on!
A song can mean different things depending on the listener. You may not get the song writers meaning of the lyrics. However the music will guide you on your own meaning. If you ever delve into the YES albums, there are no meaning to the lyrics. They just take you on your own spiritual journey. I think most of their music is awesome that way.
One piece of advice on doing music reviews. If you watch a video of a band or artist playing live, seek out a video that was recorded close to when they first released the song. Seeing a group of 60 year old men playing a song that they recorded when they were 20 loses a lot of the feeling... it's a good thing to do as a follow-up, but a first listen should either be the studio version or a live version done "in its day".
The Spirit of Radio is the signature song on Permanent Waves but the best is Natural Science and a live version preferably. BTW you missed the dedication at the end of the video to Neil the drummer, who's fifth anniversary of his death was yesterday. RIP Professor. 😢
If you want today’s best Rock you must review “The Warning” , best current rock band on the rise. Start with Dust to Dust, live from the Pepsi center CDMX!!!
Greta Van Fleet is great and they all deserver their props, including the drummer. But he's got nothing on Rush's drummer Neil Peart, a legend and a GOAT, if he isn't in the top 3 on any GOAT drummer list, the list is a farce. Neil Peart, also known as 'The Professor' has a saying about him; he is your favorite drummer's favorite drummer. Guys like Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters) and Danny Carey (Tool) were all inspired by Neil. Dave and Taylor hosted for Rush at their 2013 induction into the Rock and Roll hall of fame. Danny Carey took the late great Neil Peart's place as drummer, to play with Rush at Taylor Hawkins' memorial tribute. They were/are all great friends and they all look up to Rush; the god father's of progressive metal. Of course Alex Lifeson (Rush lead guitarist) and Geddy Lee (Rush Bassist, singer and keyboardist) are also legends and GOATS on the guitar and bass as well. Greatest rock trio ever. Though you have only reacted to a couple of their songs, those songs, and most others I see being requested are all from the first half of their 40 year career. I'd like to suggest a few of my favorites from the second half of their career: Far Cry, Headlong Flight and We Hold On.
Sorry man, I can’t give you a thumbs up because you did not watch the video until the end, and you missed something in this video that was very important. Reply to me telling me what you missed and I’ll give you the thumbs up. Once you see, you’ll get it.
Just try some different music and steer towards music that moves you or makes you feel good. Country , classical, classic rock whatever. The important thing is let you be you. Don't patronize the viewer. They will see right through it.
John Bonham for me is the best drummer with the band Led Zeppelin consider 🎸When the Levee Breaks🎸 as a song to react to please.🙏 I love Neil Peart and agree Bill Ward while good, not great!
Since your enjoying Rush so much you should watch Neil Peart the drummers video it’s live from Frankfurt and prob the best drum solo ever recorded. RIP Neil Peart.🇨🇦👍🏻🇨🇦
Neil Peart Drum Solo - Rush Live in Frankfurt - After you see that you won't need to see another drum solo ever again.

Guitarist Alex Lifeson is a highly underrated guitarist. Never seems to be in people's Top 10s. All 3 of these guys are genius at the craft
Thats what i keep hearing!
Alex's only problem is that he is in the same band with Geddy and Neil. When your two band mates are TOP 2 or 3, it's hard to stand out. LOL
In your exploration of this amazing group, don't be afraid to pause, back up, and re-listen. I hear this one alot gonna have to do it!
"... all this machinery making modern music" was a 1980 reference to the music industry (radio stations, DJ's, record companies [vs] artists).

Have to do YYZ Live in Rio. You'll be appropriately impressed and blown away IMHO
This was my gateway to rush in late 1979 when this was released as a single. I was 12 years old. I have been obsessed with Rush ever since.
Geddy Lee is lead singer and Bass.Neil Peart is drummer ... he left us at a young age. I've seen RUSH live a couple times in Canada. Check out "April Wine" and of course my favourite "Dire Straits" Sultans of Swing.

This video was made to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the album for which it was the first track. It's basically a combination of the career of the band's drummer/lyricist, who had just died earlier in that same year (2020), with a very short history of the development of radio broadcasting.

If you'd prefer to react to the crowd favourite of Peart's solos instead, just type in:
"Neil Peart Drum Solo Frankfurt"
... and you'll find it instead.
Awesome ill look into to it the more cool stuff the better!
The hand gestures are something Geddy Lee does live during these parts. Personally I think he wants the crowd to sing along but they never did lol.

That’s what that means you’re not talking about a DJ standing in front of an audience with a record player scratching and mixing
They’re talking about literally calling the radio station and asking them to play a song that you wanna hear.
LONG LIVE RUSH ❤
Keep up the Rush reactions. Try LaVilla Strangiato next. Fantastic instrumental.
Thanks so much i will for sure look into watching some of there song’s in a live format! I bet it rocks!
Back to support a brand new channel. RUSH, RUSH and more RUSH, subbed up let’s go . . .
Thats so awesome i will be watching some love stuff coming up for sure to get a feel for it!
Mental note for all new reviewers: never, ever interrupt a guitar solo.
😂
😂 i felt like i shouldn’t have as i did it
Seconded.
Since your enjoying Rush so much you should watch Neil Peart the drummers video it’s live from Frankfurt and prob the best drum solo ever recorded. RIP Neil Peart.🇨🇦👍🏻🇨🇦
Welcome down the rush rabbit hole sir. Come on in the water's fine
Best 3 piece orchestra ever…..
Ok if you like the guitar solo its time for Working Man Live in Cleveland and you can see Alex and Geddy do dueling solos. Two of the best just going nuts.
So is this show when they are older, a few have mentioned it and i looked it up its recent no?
@@RebelReacts66
Yes.
Best. Show. Ever.
Watch it if you want to see why I said that!
Red Barchetta by Rush is a great song
Watch "Spirit of the Radio" - live version - SARS Concert.
Joe bonamassa guy you will love him do “just got paid”
live from royal albert hall it’s fire🇨🇦🔥🇨🇦
Button pushed👍🏻
Try YYZ live in Rio.
Second person to say it so its getting donen
The Spirit of Radio is the signature song on Permanent Waves but the best is Natural Science and a live version preferably. BTW you missed the dedication at the end of the video to Neil the drummer, who's fifth anniversary of his death was yesterday. RIP Professor. 😢
If you want today’s best Rock you must review “The Warning” , best current rock band on the rise. Start with Dust to Dust, live from the Pepsi center CDMX!!!
Big sound for 3 guys ... :)
Oh cool. You've added a hundred subs since i jouned yesterday 👀
Cant stop now!
Forget about the hand gesture: it's a cartoon faux-pas. 😅
if your next ones happens to be Xanadu, do the live version from 1981
Subdivisions.
YYZ live in Rio
Heck yeah this one and cleveland have come up alot
Why don’t you start up with “ working man live in Cleveland
Please no more pausing during guitar solos 😊
Just try some different music and steer towards music that moves you or makes you feel good. Country , classical, classic rock whatever. The important thing is let you be you. Don't patronize the viewer. They will see right through it.
John Bonham for me is the best drummer with the band Led Zeppelin consider 🎸When the Levee Breaks🎸 as a song to react to please.🙏 I love Neil Peart and agree Bill Ward while good, not great!
Best comment section I've seen in a min..........🔥💯🎶🎶🎵💃🕺🩵✌️☮️🕊️
🌴🇬🇺 YYZ LIVE IN RIO🙏🙏 YYZ. YYZ YYZ YYZ YYZ YYZ
