  • Jeremiah was one of the major prophets in the Old Testament.
He was born as a part of the tribe of Benjamin just north of the capital city of Jerusalem.
He was called by God to be a prophet as a child, but he complained that he didn’t know how to speak like a prophet. God assured him, however, that he would give him the words to speak.
Jeremiah was a prophet during the reigns of five kings of Judah beginning with the good king Josiah and ending with the last king of Judah, King Zedekiah. He spoke out against idolatry, false prophets, and greedy priests.
His words were met with much opposition. People were especially upset about his prophecies about the fall of the kingdom of Judah. Jeremiah prophesied that if they tried to oppose the Babylonians, Jerusalem would fall. When the armies of Babylon invaded, the king’s advisors said they should kill Jeremiah for disheartening the armies of Judah. After a failed attempt to kill the prophet, the king put him in jail.
After the Babylonians conquered Judah and destroyed Jerusalem, they released Jeremiah and forced the people of God to move to Babylon. Jeremiah fled to Judea and then later Egypt during the exile.
In the Book of Jeremiah, which contains his prophecies, he spoke of a New Covenant that God will establish after the Babylonian exile. As Christians we recognize this New Covenant in the life, death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit that writes the law on our hearts.
