"No matter how good you are, there's always a level where you can meet your match" This is such a fantastic line and perfectly sums up everything that Geometry Dash did right. Great video!! It's pretty clear that GD owes almost all its success to its level editor, but I think people often overlook the fact that part of the reason this worked so well is because the editor is AMAZING. And there's many reasons for that: 1) It's super easy to use - When I first opened the GD editor, the way it worked was immediately clear. Place blocks and spikes on the grid, and press a button on the side to playtest it. From there, I was able to quickly pick up on how to use other features like changing background color, etc. On the other hand, in the IMPOSSIBLE GAME editor (which I actually used before GD), nothing made sense. The UI was an unorganized mess and getting basic things to work was an absolute nightmare. And considering that the only gameplay was jumping over spikes, it just didn't feel worth learning 2) The editor can do everything - RobTop has stated many times that he uses the exact same level editor as everyone else, and if there's a feature he needs for a new level of his, he'll add it. Most game developers hardcode lots of stuff for their levels and then throw a very watered-down subset of the features into an editor, and the fact that Geometry Dash DOESN'T do this has always been mind blowing to me. 3) Levels are shareable IN-GAME - In the vast majority of level editors, you simply save your level to a file and send it to a friend over a forum or something. Geometry Dash does the exact opposite, where you can't export level files but rather have to upload them to a public in-game database that anybody can browse. This way you don't have to sift through countless websites to find new stuff to play, and the featured level system helps curate good ones 4) Online levels are incentivized - Playing custom levels gives you the same rewards as if you played normal ones. Stars, orbs, etc. In fact, the vast majority of the game's achievements are specifically locked behind doing this. The level editor isn't just a piece of optional bonus content, it's extremely front-and-center. A lot of this stuff was pretty unheard of back when Geometry Dash released - If the Impossible Game was Mario Bros. then GD was basically Mario Maker. The editor isn't perfect by any means but from a strictly design-focused standpoint it checked every box for a perfect game.
I love the in-depth comment, you're absolutely right that having the level editor at launch was the key. Also helps RUclipsrs like us make our videos and promote the game

Remember how you said that the impossible game 2 had improved gameplay mechanics? Well in the geometry dash level editor, you can set up triggers to manipulate the gameplay mechanics however you want. So many levels on Geometry Dash are LITERAL MINIGAMES, and on top of that, the Impossible game 2 was remade in Geometry Dash within a couple of weeks. It really shows how extensive the capabilities of the level editor and the community are. I feel like no matter how much you research GD you always underestimate its true power.
I think it is worth noting that Robtob had the chance to collaborate with big indie EDM artists and collaborate with Newgrounds to source community-made music to the game, which in itself made the creative freedom to thrive even further. This if what also allowed to Geometry Dash to surge in success.
I like your video. It is sad that The Impossible Game 2 didn't get a peak because Geometry Dash is popular and already has hype built up for 2.2 but at least they tried... Maybe one day TIG 2 will get enough players to play (at least 100 or more). I like your PFP ngl.
One way to see the success of geometry dash is to look at interest on youtube. Robtop has more subs than both Fortnite and Minecraft official channels while having uploaded like 30 videos in his decade on youtube.
Just think about it, if it wasn’t for fluke games, we wouldn’t have geometry dash, and if it wasn’t for robtop, it would be quite the same story… thank you fluke games…
Worth noting at 8:20, Clubstep although being the first official demon level was not the first demon level in the game. The demon difficulty was added in 1.3 after being inspired by a level called “Demon Park.”
Me and my mate used to play the hell out of The Impossible Game on Xbox Live Arcade and our phones. When I started seeing Geometry Dash related stuff in the last couple years, I always assumed it had been around longer than The Impossible Game, and we'd somehow played the imitation and slept on the original. Little did I know that what we had played was the original take on the concept after all! Now I can get back on my high horse and start looking down on Geometry Dash kids for not being OGs. Can't wait for this next phase of my life.
i loved the video, one thing i was confused about while watching is why not mention the music at all? i feel like the music was a big part of geometry dash as a casual player who never really got too far into it. did the impossible game even have music? was it any good? these are questions that were going through my head throughout most of this video. overall, editing was great and i enjoyed watching iti, was just curious about this thing. keep up the good work
My thoughts are with you at this very moment. Although to answer some of your questions, there was music in The Impossible Game (just look up footage for it). Music plays the biggest role in Geometry Dash, which imo led to its success. There are a few other factors not mentioned in this video, like the different types of icons you can unlock, with vaults and etc. The lack of context was my only critique with the video so far. So yeah, I agree with you.
Yeah. Felt like 1.9 was something he should have mentioned as it contributed to geometry dash’s success greatly due to custom songs, as well as a new set of 2 official songs as well.
Yes the impossible game has music. in fact, robtop basically ripped off the practice theme from the impossible game for the Geometry Dash menu 🤣. go take a listen!
@@Henke_YTI think downloading music directly from newgrounds into GD for level editor was the best thing robtop did in 1.6. It was crazy and it was probably the biggest editor change with the color channels being upgraded to 4 and you being able to change object colors. (*cof cof* nice circles *cof cof*)
@@Henke_YT basically, back in 2017 shortly after 2.1, he immediately started working on 2.2. there would be mostly teaser images until 2018, when he showcased some features on his youtube channel. development would be very slow, but he would continue to show either mini 15 second videos or images, until 2021. when we finally got to see one of the 2 main levels in the update. he would continue showing more major sneak peeks on his channel from every 8 months to a year, along with more mini videos and images. the update was originally planned to release Christmas 2018, summer 2020, and late 2022. until finally in august 2023 we got a accurate release window.
The community really carried this game to a home run... there's a reason we've survived almist 7 years without an update... and keep in mind we were used to updates coming out after a few months... we really did something right to have it what it is today
The ending was a bit abrupt, and it would have been nice to have a tie back to the main thesis of the video, or maybe some kind of conclusion to it. However, it’s still definitely an enjoyable video, and overall, you did a great job! ❤
I love how Robtop can bring out so many new innovations on such a simple concept of a game, I'm even more impressed on how the impossible game was able to make its own charm that is not that similar from GD. It's a shame it didn't really pop off, but I'm guessing its because of the sudden big update that they made to the game and the fact that the impossible game has no dedicated community just like GD due to no consistent updates for the player.
I don't understand how you don't mention the significance of Geometry Dash having a free version. I always chalked that up as Geometry Dash's main strength and the primary reason it overtook the Impossible Game. One of the primary demographics for both games was kids and teens, who generally don't have money to just throw at a mobile game. The impossible game was much less accessible for that reason. Like, I remember my friend had The Impossible Game, and that was how I was introduced to it, but it wasn't something I could get or play, because buying it wasn't as much of an option, or just wasn't worth it. But then a couple years later, everyone else in school knew about and played Geometry Dash some, and I played it occasionally as well. Basically none of those people knew about The Impossible Game. Games like this succeed by word of mouth. But word of mouth is significantly stifled by a paywall. Especially when there were so many other popular games like Angry Birds, Clash of Clans, Subway Surfers, etc. that were free to play, it just often didn't justify the risk to buy a game like The Impossible Game. By having a good free version, Geometry Dash was able to spread like wildfire by word of mouth, because there was little to no barrier to trying it out.
Really shows the longevity of the game when I recall playing the game for the first time on my friend's iPod many year ago struggling to beat Stereo Madness before playing it myself on and off. The fact that new updates still actually deliver quality content that improves the game in a significant manner is a feat that most games that have reached the age that GD has can't meet.
I actually remember playing the impossible game first, and I always saw gdash as a kind of ripoff, even when it got super popular. It came to the point where I completely forgot why I thought that way of gdash, until I saw this video!!! It wasn't just a weird memory after all!
8:23 this is factually incorrect, the first demon map is an online level called “demon park” created by a user named “m2col”, this level inspired topala to make the demon difficulty and rated demon park as the first ever demon level, clubstep is the first MAIN demon level.
A lot of people, *ESPECIALLY* the outsiders, underestimate the sheer unlimited power of Geometry Dash's level editor as a creative tool. You can make your own themed short game like creations within it, and that was the case even *BEFORE* the release of update 2.2! A lot of the best online levels you can play feel like adventures of their own, and there are skilled technical people who did platformer levels before platformer mode ever became a thing!
The platformer concept is pretty simple and it's definitely possible that rob had taken this idea for himself. But I feel like the editor is really what sets GD apart from any other game
Now fluke games made a sequel featuring new mechanics and bosses did years ago. But in the second world in the second level called breathe. They added a jetpack that had limited fuel which robtop probably copied for the 2.2 update
at its core yes, gd takes a lot from the impossible game. but at this point its hard to call geometry dash an “impossible game ripoff” when you see the works of art people are creating in the level editor today. that is the main reason why the game is still so popular. i will give a list of levels for you to check out: White Space by Xender Game Bismarck by Inex Yoquiero by Vrymer Dustmuncher by Loltad hope these levels give you an understanding of where this game is at now! as for the impossible game i think it was a great game for its time, but the gd editor is definitely more enabling for creators to make really cool levels
i feel like each game is for different audiences. if you like the more older 90's idea of a challenging game, you would probably like the impossible game more. if you're looking for a more hardcore longtime experience, you would play Geometry Dash.
there are 2 types of people... 1: inspired 2: copied anyways i feel like copying something that already exists and making it better has good history in being succesful. minecraft also has same story so thats something
I lowkey got whiplash seeing your channel posting a GD video lol I've watched your content since you were doing Mythsmashers! Crazy to see how far you've come. Great video as always!!
I started playing The Impossible Game and then went on to rack up thousands of hours on Geometry Dash and I did not even know The Impossible Game was even on Steam. Thank you for this information, I can now re-live that game from my computer. 🎉
Interesting. I thought The Impossible Game was created by Robtop himself. Was this a rumor? Or did Robtop help develop The Impossible Game? My only criticism is that some context seems to be missing from this video, but other than that, this is a great video!
If the impossible game had editor on console or Mobile then maybe it been a little little more popular, and with impossible game 2, if you didn’t need to beat main levels to unlock the next level and editor objects then it would of been more liked
holy shit i watched your videos back in 2020 then i got into gd now i get this recommended to me i cant this is a blast from the past keep up the good work :)
I've never played geometry dash (idk why this video was recommended to me lol) and I didn't even realize that the impossible game was a different game. All I remembered about the impossible game was 'that game with the cube and spikes' and then I saw geometry dash and just thought it must be the same thing after more development and updates.
0:31 sadly, the impossible game is money, so I had to buy part 2 i’ll save up some money so I can buy the game and it was other one that was the free version but the game is now not available to play
“Every time a level is added to a full version another is added to lite-“ Some levels just got added to lite without the OG Geometry Dash getting new levels
I remember watching gameplay of "The Impossible Game" a long time ago when i was like a kid or something, then seeing geometry dash pop up and eventually become really popular, and going "wait, wasn't that a different game before"
Something similar happened with stumble guys. It copied fall guys completely including some major maps. The only thing they did right was to launch it on mobile which usually attracts a larger audience in games like these. Fall guys was a pc only game. But, stumble guys was on mobile so a larger community of people were Able to play. They surpassed fall guys in popularity and now have sponsored MrBeast's video(s).
When I first saw people playing Geometry Dash my first thought was it's "an impossible Game ripoff with Castle Crashers music" and never looked at it again.
damn, you'd be surprised how much user content gd has nowadays. there are so many beautiful and amazing levels created in all sorts of styles, commonly showcased by huge youtubers like nexus and viprin
Man, I remember the impossible game. Didn't understand why it was popular. I always remembered it as the first version of Geometry Dash for some reason. This makes so much sense now.
First impossible game, then geometry dash, then geometry jump in cool math games. Geometry jump is also the original name that it was going to be called. The impossible game and the worlds hardest game

One way to see the success of geometry dash is to look at interest on youtube. Robtop has more subs than both Fortnite and Minecraft official channels while having uploaded like 30 videos in his decade on youtube.
That's unreal
Just think about it, if it wasn’t for fluke games, we wouldn’t have geometry dash, and if it wasn’t for robtop, it would be quite the same story… thank you fluke games…
thank you for commenting that so i realized that
Well said
Worth noting at 8:20, Clubstep although being the first official demon level was not the first demon level in the game.
The Impossible Game had great music and so does Geometry Dash. That's another factor for sure
I didn't expect a Geometry Dash video from you!
Both are great games but I am glad that Geometry Dash won in the end and is still full of life!

Great video! one thing i would like to correct though, the 2.2 update was teased as early as 2017 / 2018.
I'm curious, was there a video teaser at that time or did RobTop just say something about it?
@@Henke_YT also had Geometry Dash Subzero that released in 2017, it was basically a free demo which had some 2.2 features
The community really carried this game to a home run... there's a reason we've survived almist 7 years without an update... and keep in mind we were used to updates coming out after a few months... we really did something right to have it what it is today
this been blowing up in the gdyt discord by the way ty for making this
I'll pop in (Edit: thought you meant the official geometry dash discord not gdyt)
The ending was a bit abrupt, and it would have been nice to have a tie back to the main thesis of the video, or maybe some kind of conclusion to it. However, it’s still definitely an enjoyable video, and overall, you did a great job! ❤
Thanks for the feedback, will tie it back at the end next time so it feels more satisfying
@@Henke_YTCool! No problem :)
Such a well made video!
I always thought the impossible game was geometry dash before the name was changed, I loved that shit
What a throwback W video
Keep up the dope vids my man
Ive played The Impossible Game, but never even heard of Geometry Dash, lol

Maybe you're a console gamer and not a mobile gamer.
fair enough xd
Really shows the longevity of the game when I recall playing the game for the first time on my friend's iPod many year ago struggling to beat Stereo Madness before playing it myself on and off. The fact that new updates still actually deliver quality content that improves the game in a significant manner is a feat that most games that have reached the age that GD has can't meet.

I actually remember playing the impossible game first, and I always saw gdash as a kind of ripoff, even when it got super popular. It came to the point where I completely forgot why I thought that way of gdash, until I saw this video!!! It wasn't just a weird memory after all!
NO WAY INSANE THE BEST FALL GUYS YT MADE A GD DOCUMENTARY HUHHH
edit: as someone with 2,668 hours in gd, this made me so happy xd
he knows a thing or two about knockoffs being more popular than the original

THERES A FUCKING GUN IN IMPOSSIBLE GAME 2!!
I Love how your making more content, not just fall guys content, this is really refreshing
The platformer concept is pretty simple and it's definitely possible that rob had taken this idea for himself. But I feel like the editor is really what sets GD apart from any other game
Trackmania and Super Mario Maker series: _exist_
Actual underrated video hope 2.2 comes out soon...
2.2 was announced in 2017 and had sneek peeks in 2018 but took 7 years to update but yeah
Now fluke games made a sequel featuring new mechanics and bosses did years ago. But in the second world in the second level called breathe. They added a jetpack that had limited fuel which robtop probably copied for the 2.2 update
Glad it’s covered that this game ripped off the superior The Impossible Game. Loved that game to death.
I feel like the impossible game walked so that geometry dash could fly
at its core yes, gd takes a lot from the impossible game. but at this point its hard to call geometry dash an “impossible game ripoff” when you see the works of art people are creating in the level editor today. that is the main reason why the game is still so popular. i will give a list of levels for you to check out:
White Space by Xender Game
Bismarck by Inex
Yoquiero by Vrymer
Dustmuncher by Loltad
hope these levels give you an understanding of where this game is at now! as for the impossible game i think it was a great game for its time, but the gd editor is definitely more enabling for creators to make really cool levels
@@TheNormalLyan it even had like 6-7 levels when it was finished.
i feel like each game is for different audiences. if you like the more older 90's idea of a challenging game, you would probably like the impossible game more. if you're looking for a more hardcore longtime experience, you would play Geometry Dash.
Just like it happens in music genres, it's not who makes it first but rather, who makes it better
there are 2 types of people...
1: inspired
2: copied
anyways i feel like copying something that already exists and making it better has good history in being succesful. minecraft also has same story so thats something
The next sequel to this video should be called "How Paper Can't Fly surpassed the game it was inspired from"
one of the many examples of when the copy is better than the original.
RopTop really knows what he’s doing. He effectively made a clone into something awe inducing.
I got an ad for geometry dash right in the middle of this video 😂😂
Lol
Probably a scam Robtop doesn't run ads for gd

I started playing The Impossible Game and then went on to rack up thousands of hours on Geometry Dash and I did not even know The Impossible Game was even on Steam. Thank you for this information, I can now re-live that game from my computer. 🎉
Interesting. I thought The Impossible Game was created by Robtop himself. Was this a rumor? Or did Robtop help develop The Impossible Game?
My only criticism is that some context seems to be missing from this video, but other than that, this is a great video!
I believe that's a rumor. If you have more context we would be happy to hear it!
RobTop had no development in The Impossible Game.
he did not, robtop games and fluke games are a different developer, rob was inspired(?) to make geometry dash
If the impossible game had editor on console or Mobile then maybe it been a little little more popular, and with impossible game 2, if you didn’t need to beat main levels to unlock the next level and editor objects then it would of been more liked
They had geometry dash 1.0 on the school iPads. call me an OG.

Great video, its just missing something. So many people I know came to Geometry Dash from the free games like GD Lite, GD Meltdown etc
Geometry dash was one of my favorite games back then, mostly because of the feature that allow you to create your own level in the game
When I first saw people playing Geometry Dash my first thought was it's "an impossible Game ripoff with Castle Crashers music" and never looked at it again.
You never played Geometry Dash ever since?

Man, I remember the impossible game. Didn't understand why it was popular. I always remembered it as the first version of Geometry Dash for some reason. This makes so much sense now.
First impossible game, then geometry dash, then geometry jump in cool math games. Geometry jump is also the original name that it was going to be called. The impossible game and the worlds hardest game
Geometry Dash 2.2 has been released a month ago, it is the biggest update we ever played, like people can create games in the game, and even use full camera control.
I understand why peeps are fr a lil upset with rubrubs lack of consistency but i will say because us players and creators had such freedom with creation and playability we made one of the best games to exist fr. The boundaries pushed are actually insane
