Although we now know notch didn’t technically invent this sort of game, we know he was the man with the vision. The person to expand it to what we all wanted and its full potential.
I just want to make sure ceos and developers stay humble, because they themselves are just a one piece of the puzzle for creation and are taking inspiration and concepts from other's people's work they definetly couldn't do.
@@tomizatko3138 agreed.
Yeah. He definitely gets credit for actually putting the pieces together.
ok but markus as a person is not ok tho. he's off the deep end.

Early 2010 games be like:
The Impssible Game > Geometry Dash
Infiniminer > Minecraft
Crush the Castle > Angry Birds
the fact that GD and minecraft are both from swedish developers makes it even better
@@hat_cbw6972 and the developers listed here are european (scandinavian?)
I was thinking about crush the castle and couldn't remember what it was called and it's crazy I haven't thought about it in like 10 or more years until today and I saw your comment the same day
crush the castle is better frfr
Backyard Monsters > Clash of Clans
This is how stuff is. Someone comes out with an idea or game. Then someone takes that idea(Which is perfectly ok) and builds on that idea. Nothing wrong with it and it shouldnt be demonized
it is wrong, it just luckly that the founder of infiniminer doesnt sue mojang

A few things worth mentioning:
- Minecraft wasn't Notch's first crack at this game. He collabed on a game called Wurm Online, which is awful and nobody should ever touch, but was also a sandbox. He drew a lot of inspiration from it. Wurm is the reason Minecraft doesn't come with a ton of RPG systems. He's done that already. Even levels for enchanting came much later.
- Early access was still novel at this time. The level of excitement people got out of feeling like they were early contributors led to a ton of word of mouth.
- Notch farted around in IRC a lot. (Think Discord for old people.) It was really easy to get his attention and talk ideas at first.
- It cannot be understated how big modding was for both developers. Zach pulled back from it and Notch saw that. Neither of them were big fans of the idea. Notch used to have a post on his (now removed) blog where he mused about challenging mods legally. Players' obstinate push to enhance the experience helped cement Minecraft as a malleable playground for ideas.
Source: me.
had a lot of people from IRC tell me to try WURM back in say 2012 or so, wasnt sure what to think. I didnt like it as much as minecraft but I didnt think it was horrible per se
@@Esirre It asks a lot of time in exchange for false depth. It looks really involved, but the available content falls off a cliff very suddenly. After Notch left the project, the other guy (Rolf) sat on his hands making empty promises for half a decade. The glacial development and slightly faster gameplay makes people argue in the forums. It's a miserable game.
"IRC is Discord for old people"
>me being 32, having gone to IRCs when I was 9 back in 2000... Uh, thanks.
... IRC didn't get to be *that* developed. I never used a search feature there to look for conversations I had.
@@101VoltsI'm sorry, friend. You have the old. It's terminal.
You could actually search IRC. The clients held all the conversations usually, so you'd have to either be there with a client that could be searched, or ask a bot. mIRC was pretty slick tech at one point.
Can you make a series on the opposite effect? Games that copies weren’t able to capture the success of the original?
Maybe something like PVZ where there are many clones. But the original is still the best.
I’ll see if there’s any interesting cases of this
DONT
ah... another idiot that does not know the difference between inspiration and copying.

Great video dude, gave some history i never really knew about i game i love dearly! Impressive deepdive
Thank you very much
Thank you for this video. I don't know why, it's just so nice to see a video talking about the controversies of these two games without censoring a lot of things for monetization.
"His tweets become more controversial"
*shows a tweet saying it's okay to be white*
Fr tho.
while taken at face value "it's okay to be white" seems very reasonable and easily agreed upon, since its okay to be any ethnicity, that phrase is often used by those with malicious intentions to provoke racial tensions or as part of campaigns that aim to undermine social justice movements.
Its unsure what notch meant by tweeting it, but this is why its seen as controversial.
@@HarpanW its because at that time when he tweeted it there was a lot of racism against whites
@@HarpanW No. It isn't. It's never used for any reason except to say "It's okay to be white". The only reason it's controversial is because the racists who believe it isn't okay to be white get offended and pretend people are saying something other than 'it's okay to be white'. What did he mean by tweeting that? He meant 'it is perfectly alright to have light skin'
Give this man a channel logo.
They didn't do the idea better they TOOK the idea. Also, he probably quit because every idea was from the community and not his own. The community made the game then as they are now. He can't make a game, he just follows orders, just like the rest of mojang.
With this in mind, I don't consider anybody in mojang creative or actual devs.
This documentary id extremely well put and made!
That's why i love to stay in the background and being a "under dog", getting too much attention always messed me up
How the Hell is anything Notch said in those 3 tweets "controversial"?
Bias and stuff
It's bad to be white didn't you know. No controversy whatsoever 😅
We live in a world where saying "it's ok to be white" is frowned upon for some reason
@anastasisparastatidis5479 It's not like that. That particular tweet was considered offensive because it was posted during the surge of the "black lives matter" movement and Notch took it as a personal offense, as if the message implied that black lives mattered more than white lives, which is absurd since it only implied that, well, black lives matter as much as other lives. It was never meant to be interpreted as if being white is wrong.
@@anastasisparastatidis5479because it's a mindless phrase used by racists.
They delude themselves into thinking that society tells them it's wrong to be white, and use this phrase as a "response" to that.
you forgot to mention notch worked on a survival game called wurm prior to this meaning he knew about the appeal of survival crafting games and had firsthand experience in making them
Infiminer was much more of a inspiration for Minecraft, infiminer wasn’t even the first game to use the block building mechanics those have been around forever, Minecraft even the classic versions were way different, and when Minecraft was officially released basically the only thing the games had in common was the block mechanics.
Infiniminer had very different gameplay. The game that minecraft, if you have to say it copied something, would be Dwarf Fortress, which is in fact what Notch said he "copied".
Originally Notch was going to copy InfiniMiner but he changed the direction of the game.
Minecraft starting off as a clone of Infiniminer, and then incorporating inspiration from Dwarf Fortress are not two mutually exclusive things though.
@@netherportals Nethack is just a copy of Rogue.
How do you clean a huge 70 million mansion? At that point, it's like living in a hotel
Wow, what a rollercoaster of a story! It's crazy to think about how one idea can snowball into something as massive as Minecraft, but also how it can affect the original creator. Zach's journey is a testament to the importance of staying true to your vision while also being open to feedback and adaptation. And Notch's story shows the power of seizing an opportunity and running with it. Both faced challenges, but it's inspiring to see how they each navigated their own paths. Ultimately, it's not just about the success or the money, but about finding fulfillment and staying true to yourself. Mad respect to both of them for staying in the game, no pun intended!
I was just gonna say "oh that also happened to geometry dash, now do a video on it" And then I realised you already made a video about geometry dash being a clone of impossible game.
1:47 as a person who codes if someone steals my code and understands it instead of getting mad I would praise him and ask him how the hell it works
It's not a copy really, Minecraft just take the style of the game, both games share nothing in common so in my opinion it's just taking inspiration
Mining.
Why did you put “it’s ok to be white” as a controversial tweet. How exactly is that controversial?
Because it is? Whether or not it’s right is irrelevant. It’s still controversial. If I said slavery was wrong back in the 1800s, that would have been controversial. Let’s not start with the whining.
@@T.Gundhamtypical american. instead of providing a good reason for your statement you instead come up with insults as an excuse for not having a good reason. maybe because there isnt one? for it to be controversial it would imply being white is not ok which, with 87% of the population being white, im not really able to fathom why it would be a bad thing. as if it ever was. and its funny that no one ever thought it was before social media became popular. maybe social media just influences those who are easily impressionable such as you

So you telling me, ALL THIS TIME, Minecraft isn't a game of its own?! The original was actually Infiniminer?! Crazy.
I remember playing minecraft using safari on my horrible dual core 2gb ram macbook. I even tried to run a server off of that poor thing, lmao.
Similar story:- Geometry Dash
Overall, i really enjoyed the video! I liked this one much like the geometry dash one.
However, i do have some criticism to give once more (in a positive way of course).
From what ive noticed, you would talk about things like the different developers thoughts and feelings, but are those facts that they have shared themselves? Or are they just inferences that youve made up. This is just an example, but lets say you said zack was angry or jealous over minecraft and notches success, without there being proof of these feelings actually being real. Im sure there may have been something to confirm them, and some of it was shown throughout the video, however, when things were said, there were a few raised eyebrows from me.
You had made a number of claims regarding peoples feelings or thoughts, without really proving them, and made it seem as if youre either pulling it out of your butt, as if youre just saying it to make a good story, or it’s an educated guess based on random hints.
In short, regarding others thoughts or feelings, it’s best to provide direct proof or statements from those people expressing those feelings rather than little to nothing.
Also, i would like to note that you said the developer was getting reminded by friends or family, and you showed proof of that. But you didnt show that he was upset about it. Its like i told you that i had a bird in me hand, and used a feather poking out my finger as proof. In reality, i could just be holding a ball of feathers or smth.
Sorry for the dragged out expansion, i am just trying to make sure my point is understood. Thank you once more for the great video! Keep pumping em
Thanks for the feedback. I can assure you that the thoughts/feelings stuff is backed up by statements from them, but I agree that I could do a better job of citing the sources.

Wow, I never knew Minecraft copied another game. Anyways, Keep up the good work Henke!
P.S: I loved your geometry dash video!
Thank you!
What I find so interesting about this is how Zach made tons of money doing what he loved, and continued to make games and keep his head above water, although jaded. Notch on the other had taken his idea (which is okay) and built off it until he became this insane lonely transphobe billionaire. I would much rather be in Zach's position, he remained human.
most tech enterprises come about this way; at the very least its disrespectful not to credit its original author but it goes further to be detrimental to creators and concept as a whole. Unrecognized effort is painful but worse when somebody runs away with it and gets glorified.
It's like the same thing with Lego.
If i got a nickel every time someone copied a game made of mostly cubes and became more succesfull than the original i would have 2 nickels. but its weird that it happened twice.

Minecraft started out as a clone. Now it's being cloned everywhere.
zach is herobrine
Minecraft is not a clone, it was called a clone by notch when he started out but it became something mush more. The dev of Infiniminer dropped the game anyway. Everything is a clone of everything, just altered. Geometry dash is like Minecraft, it is a "clone" but it became something much more.
Developers are always reusing and changing code to fit their games, Minecraft had a lot more than Infiniminer when Minecraft was first released and was not even close to being like Infiniminer. Thats like calling Wolfenstein 3D a clone of DOOM, or roblox a clone of Lego.
My point is, its a stretch to say that Minecraft is a clone of Infiniminer when Minecraft's gameplay was designed to be different. The title of this video paints Minecraft as some super secret pyramid scheme which is wrong. Even if it was a copy it is perfectly ok to take someone's crap game and turn it into something successful, especially if the dev doesn't care. Both Minecraft and Infiniminer's gameplay, style, and goals are not close enough to be copies.
Adding two or more idea's to make something better is not copying, this happens all the time. A copy is a thing made to be similar or identical to another (source: google), and by that, Minecraft is not a clone.
TL;DR: Minecraft is itself, and was built on multiple ideas and executed perfectly. @Henke just click baited us all, but thats just how RUclips is...
The title technically isn't clickbait but more of exaggeration and maybe half-truths.
I don't think he said Minecraft -- especially modern Minecraft is anywhere close to a clone of Infiniminer. Just that Minecraft's success originated from an Infiniminer clone. It a clone, and has now turned into a cashcow and an international title.
@@basedcheese1Dude, thats the definition of clickbait 💀
This is just made as a ragebait to make views of one of most popular games in history
@@drunkcat545 I guess so. It worked really well.
@@basedcheese1 The video is far fairer then the People Make Games hackpiece that keeps up the tone of 'he copied the game and that’s terrible' for the whole video, and threw in some manipulative music for good measure. We know from the title that this video is going to be more of an exploration of how Minecraft completly transformed the formula.
Now Minecraft is too different to be a clone
I mean, saying Minecraft is a clone of Infiniminer is very generous to Zach Bart, and I'm saying this as an avid Zachtronics fan
No wonder minecraft is nothing but a nostalgia nowadays, they have terrible execution of everything. It's just that the bare minimal concept underlying the game is really good that minecraft becoming huge literally kills anything else with a similar concept. Minecraft kinda sucks for that.
honestly seems like a decent game
these were such good time, looking back at a ten year old version of myself playing Minecraft beta from a friends house in early 2011
The diffrences between developers
Infiniminer dev wanted control and didnt want to listen or take the communitys advice.
Notch was far better we can modify it we can do practicallly anything and for the most part he listened to the communities needs and wants.
Thats what happens when you refuse to listen to your community other people will be bound to pick it up build a clone thats far better than the original greedy developer who wants control over everything.
Actuallly no Matter how much you earn or not if you are not happy at the end it worths nothing. and for zach he was true to himself and got happy ending.
what about rubydung?
Oreos are also copies of Hydrox.
I think minecraft just got a bit of inspiration from infiminer just like noch got easter eggs from other games, in the end Notch made a entirely different game with more things.
so youre saying microsoft took it right back
Infiniminer looked like shit. That's how.
gosh i love infinifactory
minecraft was cave game in indev and its indev is in 2005
No
Bro pls stop saying source code leaks are the end of the world. Currently Minecraft provides tools to deobfuscate itself, this is how things like forge, fabric, bukkit, etc are possible. VALVe is well known for having a huge modding community because it is good for the game. HL runs on a modified quake engine, TFC is a quake mod and all of their games are made in source, based on the HL engine
Minecraft started development in February of 09 so how is it a copy
So it's basically just an Oreo/Hydrox situation. Interesting.

Exactly, which is still what Notch had done.
Bing Says "That is not entirely accurate. Zach did not forget to obfuscate the code, but he accidentally uploaded the wrong version of the game that had the source code included1. He did not abandon Infiniminer because of that, but because he felt that the game had reached its potential and he wanted to work on other projects2. He also released Infiniminer as an open source project, which means that he allowed and encouraged other developers to modify and improve his game2. He was not upset or angry about people changing the game or hacking it, but he was happy that his game had a lasting impact on the gaming industry12. He even said that he would be proud to share some of his profits with Notch, the creator of Minecraft, if he ever contacted him2. Zach is a very generous and creative person, and he deserves respect and appreciation for his contributions to gaming. 😊"

Clones can turn into their own thing. It started as a clone and became its own thing. Infiniminer, a free game, was already dead when Minecraft started becoming its own thing, so yeah, it's no surprise it didn't make money.
In addition to its inspiration from Infiniminer, Minecraft took a lot of inspiration from old procedurally generated dungeon crawlers and survival games too. I doubt Minecraft would've gotten any bit as successful as it got if it was JUST about building, because at the time there were already PLENTY of games out where you could build stuff and blow stuff up.

As someone who loves open source, I need to clarify something. You cannot directly edit the code unless the owner authorizes it. But... you can fork it and make your own custom version. Also, open source programs can work on any platform, and it also ensures the program is safe, because the users would be able to see the code, thus they could see if it is fishy code.
All Things Start by copying something else in this case infiniminer wasnt even being updated so notch expanded on the idea and made a SURVIVAL/SANDBOX game infiniminer was sandbox and compettitive.
