As a mechanical kind of a person and never seeing one of these things before I had to watch the whole thing. But I have done it over a period of about 4 hours, while I was doing things that I could watch the video and work at the same time.
I worked with a crane company that had one of these unit so they could recover their own cranes…no expensive tow bills or waiting for a available truck to bring crane back to yard…
The Army and a number of lift/wrecker manufacturers should have you on a retainer for training. You could even be teaching a civil or mechanical engineering course covering real world load calculations. You are a fantastic teacher!
Very cool unit! Never knew they existed. You just demonstrated the same principle of the weight transfer bars used on large RV bumper-pull trailers. I'm 72 YO and remember in 1966 Popular Mechanics mag used a then new Olds Toranado (front wheel drive) and hooked it up to an RV and cinched up the weight transfer bars really tight and removed the rear wheels on the Toranado and they were able to drive it around a parking lot with no rear wheels. Thanks for sharing!

This may very well be knowledge that I will never have the need to use, but I absolutely enjoyed learning it! Thank you, Casey, for showing off a very unique tow rig. Knowledge gained in any form will always help you in ways you never realized. It's one of the many bonuses about learning from different disciplines in life.
I've never been in a big rig, I've never touched a tow truck control, but I still thoroughly enjoy every single video you put out. You're the only wrecker content creator I subscribe to. Very educational. Only question I have is how the haters who've never run this kind of equipment will still know more than you?
If you need to clean the rust out of the pin hole, chuck a cleaning rod into a drill and add a 12 ga brush to the end, works most of the time. Also, I can’t imagine the mad engineer who calculated all those pivot points to make that thing work.
Nice video. Like the explanation or education for us on how some of this stuff works. I have seen the true hitch used to pick up and level beam houses as well in the past. I watch and old timer with two of these lifts pick up and entire two story house and then build his trailer under it. Once on new location he lifted it up and pulled the trailer out and then set the home down on blocks. Very strong unit for sure. He even pulled large stumps out of the ground with it.
When Casey bought the car for Grumpy he said "I'll draw a white line down the middle of the road and if you cross it, I'm gonna shoot you." I get the feeling Grumpy was joking but also dead serious at the same time 😂😮
Very clever system. Tons of work but the advantages, when it comes to extra heavy tow and staying within limit-ish, are certainly worth it. It can't do recovery much, like a flipped truck or similar but thats not it's purpose. Brilliant engineering there. Thanks for showing us while you get a bit of a refresher on how to operate it!
Extend the booms, put some elastic on the shackles and then you have a god-tier slingshot, excellent for providing artillery support for a water balloon or snowball fight, lol

We also called this The Holmes Lift in our Army unit. I was a wrecker qualified mechanic, usually wheeling a HEMTT. I wasn't too keen on it until our M915A5s came out with the Western Star cab with a sleeper. My last annual training exercise with the reserves was just me with one of these running between Indiana and Oklahoma picking up broken 915s and bringing them to local Freightliner shops because they were still under warranty. I was completely independent of everything else going on for the whole deal. Great way to cap off an eight year Army career as a mechanic.
You can still buy these new. If you visit their website they have a section of pictures of customer tow jobs. They have one short video among these and it depicts the unit being used to tow a railroad locomotive.
Ok, watching...thinking...wow, cool, cool, a damn cool piece of machinery...then you explained it flips itself off for transport with super simple but ingenious battery box and tank for the fluid. Bloody ingenious. Gotta love creative engineers

As to how to remove the surface rust where the pins go in, use a black powder bore brush on a drill. They do have some quite large ones, probably larger than you need. 🙏❤️😎🤙

I will vouch for Casey. I have used one, absolutely a pain in the butt to hook-up. Once hooked the towed united pulls exactly like a trailer. The best weight distribution in the industry. Only difference in the one I operated and his. The one I used we had to manually extended the arms.

Yeah there’s basically no information about them online. When I bought them I downloaded the operators manual, then basically just learned through trial and error. And there was lots of error 😂

Up here in Norway, between temperature shifting from freezing to mild and back almost every day for most of the year, and salting the roads to get rid of ice, I bet we could make plastic rust! Nevertheless, THANK YOU for making an effort for those hurricane victims. It´s great how you support eachother in the US. We might have great social services and free healthcare in Europe, but you guys still remember to take care of eachother. Yes it IS really long isn't it, (but basically it's all OVER by 40:24, which is all I needed to see). It's also difficult to thumb down for that, when the beginning was such a revelation, so the thumb stays up.
Who says weight distribution hitches don't have a part to play - this is the great uncle of all WDH. In Australia we typically only get to 6700 kg (14740 lb) on front axles - with super singles over375mm (145.76 inches). - for more than that we do to tandem steers. Converting any tow into a gooseneck trailer - via a weight distribution, is going to make any long distance tow so much better on the haul unit. I was waiting for some tricky rigging to winch the bus back off the extended arms.(snatch block poetry)... lol...
An hour and 22 minutes and 18 seconds, not including commercials. Microwave popcorn, a can of Root Beer and an afternoon Matinee. So that's what that is called. I have seen a Tru-Lift mounted on trucks, but your video explained what it exactly is. Nice t shirt day for a video. I would think if the rusty thing won't behave is to check the zerk fittings or just pump them with more grease. Usage and your good maintenance skills and this lift might just wake up and work smoothly.
WOW!! When tou started I was thinking..." What the hell he is talking about, zacklift 5 wheel tow unit is lighter, it is 100 times better", until you tied down those extending legs. OMG, he is making a trailer with a bus!! Now this is some epic stuff!! By far best unit ever for heavy towing. Thanks for showing us this mate!
That thing is really cool. Lots of extra steps over the Zacklift but understand the specialty of it. Can't wait to see it in action . Would love to see a front winch mounted on it like you showed. I know it's another truck to deal with but i think that you should find another cabover. You can tell that truck meant something to you.
Just a passing thought. If you moved the wheel stops all the way to the front then winch your load almost to the rubber buffers, slide the wheel stops in to position then snug up the winch. Would hopefully safe a bit of time and effort guessing where they need to be. Love the new(ish) unit. So versatile and limited at the same time. I guess it could move semi trailers with damaged pins or even damaged axles by putting the bogie under the front and hooking this to the rear.
Casey, most impressive. The light bulb moment when I realized the geometry that the true lift works from ..... very smart. My only concern for you is so many options relying on one tractor, the white !
@@Tachyon62 if it really came down to it, I could rent a truck from a buddy of mine and run everything but the Zacklift. The tru hitch and the lowbed are completely self powered and can be used with any truck

Running down the road? yes, and I wondered " WTH is that " ??? and now I know, worked in the Oil Patch nearly all my life, and I do not recall ever seeing a Tru Hitch work.... of course, they have drilling rigs, and oil tankers.... but not Heavy Towing.... It looks like chain lockers (like the zaklift safety chains) inside the extendable frame booms and chain slots instead of shackles at the end of the booms would really make frame hookup easier. It also seems like some limit switches would dummy proof that monster a little.
That is an amazing unit. Once you explained the benefit of the unit and how it transferred the weight, it made a lot of sense. I had the thought that you could wind up with another truck that you could leave this mounted to. Then I realized the the cost, all the insurance and such. I guess that doesn't make sense unless you got really busy with heavy hauls, and maybe not even then. Anyway, interesting to see something that most of us will never see. Some very clever engineering going on there.
About 25 years ago a gentalman I would help,on occasion bought a tru hitc for his towing and recovery business. He bought it to tow farm tractors and combines to the dealers for repair. It was slick for that. But the first ones were even harder to hook up. The leg extensions were manually pulled out .
Take a wood dowel and slot it, then put a piece of the green scour pad into that slot - almost as good as a wire wheel and a lot easier to deal with for the pin holes (ironically how we used to clean them for the Army units down in LA years ago since we didn't have small wire wheels that were long enough).

I used a couple of BRM Flex-Hones to clean out some really rusty bushings on my backhoe. Might be good for cleaning where the pins go on the heavy lift.
I've seen these a time or two over the years but never knew what the heck they were...awesome explanation!! I'd bet that one paying job will cover the purchase price given your ability to score "deals"!
When I was in a transportation unit in the Army (retired 02/2001) we had a tru-hitch, when we convoyed the tru-hitch would start with a spare tractor hooked behind it and if a tractor broke down, would swap tractors on the side of the road. We had one of six in the US at the time.
I had one of those monsters permanently mounted on a White GMC cab over.. I hired probably the only guy in the area that knew what it was and how to operate it..I had absolutely no clue about it. But it towed many of my trucks up and down the road
Nice job explaining the weight distribution. Curious if instead of driving the truck forward to pull away, if you couldn't chain the front axle to those retracted legs, then extend them to pull it back off the truck if you needed. Obviously takes longer but might be helpful in a limited situation.

I saw the same article back when the Toronado was the first GM front wheel drive sedan of the 1960s. It was the prototpe test bed for the Eldorado.

Ive known about Tru-Hitches for several years but I havent seen how they worked till now, thank you for showing how they work.

That thing is really cool. Lots of extra steps over the Zacklift but understand the specialty of it. Can't wait to see it in action . Would love to see a front winch mounted on it like you showed.
I know it's another truck to deal with but i think that you should find another cabover. You can tell that truck meant something to you.
Just a passing thought. If you moved the wheel stops all the way to the front then winch your load almost to the rubber buffers, slide the wheel stops in to position then snug up the winch. Would hopefully safe a bit of time and effort guessing where they need to be.
Love the new(ish) unit. So versatile and limited at the same time. I guess it could move semi trailers with damaged pins or even damaged axles by putting the bogie under the front and hooking this to the rear.
Casey, most impressive. The light bulb moment when I realized the geometry that the true lift works from ..... very smart. My only concern for you is so many options relying on one tractor, the white !
@@Tachyon62 if it really came down to it, I could rent a truck from a buddy of mine and run everything but the Zacklift. The tru hitch and the lowbed are completely self powered and can be used with any truck
You kept listing so many negatives in such a positive voice I was confused and had to doublecheck it wasn't an old video uploaded April 1st. Then you lifted the bus and it all clicked and my jaw dropped.
I guess a tow trucker's day off should be spent with new tow truck toys. I was hoping Casey would have towed the school bus around the lot to see how the Tru Hitch pivoted. Can't wait to see some videos of Casey using the Tru Lift in real life!

and now I know, worked in the Oil Patch nearly all my life, and I do not recall ever seeing a Tru Hitch work.... of course, they have drilling rigs, and oil tankers.... but not Heavy Towing....

It looks like chain lockers (like the zaklift safety chains) inside the extendable frame booms and chain slots instead of shackles at the end of the booms would really make frame hookup easier.
It also seems like some limit switches would dummy proof that monster a little.
That thing is slick! It’s a bit complicated and attention is required, but we should be paying attention anyway. Cool!

For wire brushing holes use plumbers brushes. There are a bunch of sizes. Just cut the handles and chuck them up into a drill.

That is an amazing unit. Once you explained the benefit of the unit and how it transferred the weight, it made a lot of sense. I had the thought that you could wind up with another truck that you could leave this mounted to. Then I realized the the cost, all the insurance and such. I guess that doesn't make sense unless you got really busy with heavy hauls, and maybe not even then. Anyway, interesting to see something that most of us will never see. Some very clever engineering going on there.
Sounds like you need a cab over short truck in the fleet now. Just saw one on marketplace in SC last week didnt know what it was till this video

I had a heavy rv trailer with a wheigh distributing hitch. When i set the weight on the truck the whole truck sagged 1/4". Perfect!

About 25 years ago a gentalman I would help,on occasion bought a tru hitc for his towing and recovery business. He bought it to tow farm tractors and combines to the dealers for repair. It was slick for that. But the first ones were even harder to hook up. The leg extensions were manually pulled out .
Take a wood dowel and slot it, then put a piece of the green scour pad into that slot - almost as good as a wire wheel and a lot easier to deal with for the pin holes (ironically how we used to clean them for the Army units down in LA years ago since we didn't have small wire wheels that were long enough).
Didn't know you lost everything in a fire, nice job on the recovery

I used a couple of BRM Flex-Hones to clean out some really rusty bushings on my backhoe. Might be good for cleaning where the pins go on the heavy lift.
I need to buy one of these just so I can make a cool set of gin poles out of them and then I need to buy a 5-ton army 6x6 to bolt them onto😂😂

When I was in a transportation unit in the Army (retired 02/2001) we had a tru-hitch, when we convoyed the tru-hitch would start with a spare tractor hooked behind it and if a tractor broke down, would swap tractors on the side of the road. We had one of six in the US at the time.
Gotta love the Holmes attachment. Great for longhaul towing. Way nicer than carrying a truck on the wrecker
I had one of those monsters permanently mounted on a White GMC cab over.. I hired probably the only guy in the area that knew what it was and how to operate it..I had absolutely no clue about it. But it towed many of my trucks up and down the road
Nice job explaining the weight distribution. Curious if instead of driving the truck forward to pull away, if you couldn't chain the front axle to those retracted legs, then extend them to pull it back off the truck if you needed. Obviously takes longer but might be helpful in a limited situation.
It was the lowbed line that finally made me visualize this setup. Too cool.
