The Hunt for Florida’s Most Destructive Invasive Species

  • Burmese pythons are native to Southeast Asia and were introduced into Southern Florida ecosystems when they got too big for irresponsible pet owners and following the destruction of pet stores and breeding facilities in hurricanes. After decades of unchecked population growth, there have been significant losses of native rodents, birds, deer, coyotes, and anything else these massive snakes get ahold of. The South Florida Water Management District started the Python Elimination Program in 2017 to pay licensed hunters for each python caught. The program has since removed over 1000 pythons from the Everglades. Back in 2019, we joined Donna Kalil, a python elimination specialist, on two of her hunts. Donna herself has removed over 100 pythons, ranging from 3-15ft in length.

      Having a temporary moratorium on burmese python import and sales ( in the state of Florida )might help the hunters get ahead of the snake's fast population growth .

    I don't get why the hell people insist on wrestling these monsters instead of just killing them and then dragging their bodies out when they're going to be killed anyway. There's no need for all the extra effort and risk involved in capturing them.

    • @wrongfullyaccused7139
      @wrongfullyaccused7139 2 года назад +1

      Slappy; Part of the reason is because Florida has many natives species of snake that need to be left alone. In fact, one species in Florida is threatened and protected.
      Killing a snake on the ground would typically be done with a firearm. Therein lies the problem. Some of these pythons are close to people's homes, so it is not practical and in fact could be dangerous.
      If a person knows what they are doing ( I used to breed large constrictors) it quite easy to safely capture a large constrictor. The smart people don't go alone. A ten foot Boa or Python can easily kill an unskilled grown man, especially if they are alone.

    It's a shame that this happened I'm from Michigan we have problems with have problems with invasive spices sea lamprey, alwife all introduced by man the Asian carp where brought in to South Eastern states to clean water treatment holding ponds they ended up in the rivers they are within 50 miles of lake Michigan the alwifes came in though the welland canals that go around the Niagara falls as did the sea lamfrys Niagara falls was nature's way of keeping them out of the other great lakes if the Asian carp make it to lake Michigan it's game over all 5 lakes are connected

      Michael; False, it is making a difference. The movement is going popularity. Now that people know they are allowed to get them, many will not wait for the season to begin.
      However, they have to know what they are doing. Because, not only does Florida have a problem with large constrictors, Cobras and Kraits have established a foothold and are breeding. That is a very serious problem.
