Pythons are notoriously hard to locate in the immense stretches of south Florida wetlands where they thrive. They don’t readily enter traps, and their natural camouflage is incredibly well suited to florida. These 4 hunters in 10 years caught only about 500 pythons. There are hundreds of hunters catching them in Florida but there are 30,000 pythons. That seems very difficult.

Animals themselves aren't a problem, it's humans, naturally, these animals probably would have a very slim chance in entering these lands or water areas, but humans either deliberately or accidentally put them there. I was thinking that, make something like an eel trap just for snakes over a certain size. Small ones would still get away, but I’d imagine that a bobcat or raccoon could get away more easily from a 6ft snake than a 10+ foot one.

This is so sad. I lived in Florida in the early 2000's and kept snakes. Reptile stores were everywhere and I was too young to understand wild caught snakes. I had Ball pythons and a smaller Suriname Red tail Boa (which was wild caught and only lived 5 years) but I was in awe when I saw a Burmese Python in a store. I can see how it got out of hand. I'm in my 30's now and keep fish aquariums but avoid wild caught fish. I'd love to breed fish species that are extinct in the wild soon.

But there's another tech advance that's being tried with great success: male pythons are now being implanted with microchips that emit tracking signals. When these males are released and tracked, they're often found with females. Recently a couple of these decoys were discovered along with 2 large "mating balls" totalling 11 females. We chatted and the husband told me that before heading up to washington, he went into their garage to finish their packing and he saw a 20 - 23 footer python chilling in the center of his garage. Pythons are now established in Florida and soon to be other states. These control type programs may make people feel better but don't do anything to control their population. Two snakes could easily reestablish all of the ones taken. Best thing to do is try and keep other animals out so they don't wind up becoming invasive species too. It only takes a few of them and some careless or stupid people to create a massive problem.

@@chrisbgoodv2178not really. It wouldn't be worth it. They would have to buy a lot of pythons which isnt cheap and then raise them for awhile until they get big enough. They have to be at least 4 feet to even claim the 50 dollar base price. So it really isn't worth it. All that money would go right back to raising and feeding them. Plus its not like anyone can catch pythons and get rewarded. Pretty sure you need to have a permit and be registered with the state of Florida. In the video the guy said that currently they only have 25 contractors working with the state of Florida although that number may have risen recently.
Florida just straight up banned the ownership of pythons. Venomous snakes require multiple permits, hundreds of hours in apprenticeships, yearly inspections, and strict laws, and yet it's pretty common to hear on the news that some escape. It's time to just make them outright illegal.
They had a hard time getting the okay to do this because they don't want hunting in these protected areas. So its an application process. Imagine some untrained person out there.no thank you.. But clearly the problem is so out of control these few people who are allowed will only be of minimal help.
It's unfortunate, but when it comes to invasive species we're the ones that started the problem and threw things out of whack. We're responsible for fixing it. If you are upset about the culling of invasive species (and trust me, I know it's sad), keep in mind that by reducing the invasive population you are saving many native species.

This is so sad. I lived in Florida in the early 2000's and kept snakes. Reptile stores were everywhere and I was too young to understand wild caught snakes. I had Ball pythons and a smaller Suriname Red tail Boa (which was wild caught and only lived 5 years) but I was in awe when I saw a Burmese Python in a store. I can see how it got out of hand. I'm in my 30's now and keep fish aquariums but avoid wild caught fish. I'd love to breed fish species that are extinct in the wild soon.

But there's another tech advance that's being tried with great success: male pythons are now being implanted with microchips that emit tracking signals. When these males are released and tracked, they're often found with females. Recently a couple of these decoys were discovered along with 2 large "mating balls" totalling 11 females. We chatted and the husband told me that before heading up to washington, he went into their garage to finish their packing and he saw a 20 - 23 footer python chilling in the center of his garage. He said "I seen the damn thing and turned around, told my wife and continued to put our bags in the car. when we start to hop in the car, the damn thing slithered off, he just wanted to check on us"

Pythons are now established in Florida and soon to be other states. These control type programs may make people feel better but don't do anything to control their population. Two snakes could easily reestablish all of the ones taken. Best thing to do is try and keep other animals out so they don't wind up becoming invasive species too. It only takes a few of them and some careless or stupid people to create a massive problem.
Trust me, with enough money to motivate people this issue will be solved in under 2 years.
For every snake caught give 1000$ and for big ones more.

Yeah but at least they're trying. If we did nothing, the problem would be a lot worse. Plus humans have and can drive any animal to extinction if we are determined enough. Just look at how many animals that went extinct because of us due to fear, overhunting, etc. Plus with the amount they're paying people for catching pythons I have no doubt we can keep them controlled. Money is truly an amazing motivator.
@@chrisbgoodv2178not really. It wouldn't be worth it. They would have to buy a lot of pythons which isnt cheap and then raise them for awhile until they get big enough. They have to be at least 4 feet to even claim the 50 dollar base price. So it really isn't worth it. All that money would go right back to raising and feeding them. Plus its not like anyone can catch pythons and get rewarded. Pretty sure you need to have a permit and be registered with the state of Florida. In the video the guy said that currently they only have 25 contractors working with the state of Florida although that number may have risen recently.

Owning evasive animals should require license, permit, yearly visits, and in some cases nueter, or spayed before purchasing.
Florida just straight up banned the ownership of pythons. Venomous snakes require multiple permits, hundreds of hours in apprenticeships, yearly inspections, and strict laws, and yet it's pretty common to hear on the news that some escape. It's time to just make them outright illegal.

It's unfortunate, but when it comes to invasive species we're the ones that started the problem and threw things out of whack. We're responsible for fixing it. If you are upset about the culling of invasive species (and trust me, I know it's sad), keep in mind that by reducing the invasive population you are saving many native species.
