Aftershokz Aeropex - Fix that Rattle

- The Aeropex bone conduction headphones I use during trail runs developed a pesky rattle that needed to be repaired. This video shows how I did it. It's a little boring...unless you have a pair of rattling Aeropex.
Instead of putty I've used a toothpick, so I could adjust how deep it have to go to stop rattle. You've inspired me to fix it. No more rattle. Thanks a lot for this video !!
Excellent, glad to hear you resolved that pesky rattle 🥳👍
Thanks for taking the trouble to post this fix. Just done the repair to my 2 year old Aeropex and the rattle has gone without any obvious loss in volume. I was careful not to put too much sugru glue into the hole and tested the rattle after each little bit I put in. ps. I got the same 10% discount offer from Shokz when I contacted them about the rattle - not very generous :(
Glad to hear the fix worked for you. I did get some deterioration in sound quality afterwards but they still work good enough for my needs. This is clearly a very common problem and I don’t think Aftershokz are being very generous in addressing it. I will not be purchasing from them again any time soon. Thanks again for watching.
Thanks for the video and the comments. It worked perfectly. I started with 1/16 drill bit and slowly made a hole by hand. You'll know you made it once whatever is lose inside sticks to the bit magnetically. I made the hole bigger by going up bit sizes until I got to 9/64. I then stuffed the hole by putting cotton from a cotton ball. Cut little pieces and stuffed them in with a tooth pick. Once I couldn't put any more, I used the epoxy putty to stuff the hole I made. To make it a clean finish, I used alcohol pads to clean the excess and leave it smooth. They sound better then when they were new. Thanks to those who posted their experiences and results.
Glad you found that fix useful and thanks for the detailed walkthrough - appreciate you taking the time to post that!
Thanks for the fix! Worked like a charm!
Great, glad it worked for you. I am still using my pair, but only for podcasts.
Unfortunately I broke the PCB path while drilling. On the right side with the microphone. A tip for others not to drill in the middle - keep and drill lower and closer to the inside edge (I mean the opposite side than the microphone), as the PCB path for the microphone is also there.
Sorry to hear that. Easy thing to do. Of course we wouldn’t need to be drilling holes in our headphones if Aftershokz did a better job on the manufacturing side 😡
Thanks for sharing. I have the same issue. Seems like something Shoxz should fix!
For sure they know about it. The headphones seem to last just long enough for the warranty to expire before the rattle starts. Mine have been rattle-free since the fix but the audio quality is impacted. Still good enough for audiobooks and podcasts so that will suffice for now. I hope you managed to resolve your own rattle.
Thank you!!!! GREAT!!! This is for me
Thank you but be aware I did lose the high notes after the fix. Still works fine for podcasts but I wouldn’t use them to appreciate music unless I was really stuck 👍
Word of warning, I think I stuffed too much Sugru into the holes (I used a toothpick) and now the volume/bass is very uneven between the two. Probably still useful for listening to podcasts, but listening to music is no longer an option.
(ordered a new pair yesterday, gonna be extra careful with these now that I know about their fragility)
Sorry to hear that Alan. I’m surprised you were so quick to order a new pair from them. I’m a “once bitten, twice shy” kinda guy. They won’t be getting any more of my money.
I don't think it's a question of fragility, mine were sitting in a drawer for most of the warranty period. When I decided to use them again they rattled. I believe it's a time degradation of their materials used rather about user abuse.
Awesome my friend.. I had the same problem and it worked out well.. Thank
Excellent, I’m glad it helped you out 👍
I had the rattle in the first pair, warrantied pair worked great, now I've got a loose connection to the button side, just going to purchase a new pair, will try to fix these when the new pair arrives
It’s a shame they are not more robust. Mine have been fine since the repair but the audio quality in general is poor. Fine for podcasts which is what I use them for mostly but for music 👎👎
@filmmytrailrun useful for me as an industrial employee. I can wear foamies too. Audio quality isn't Bose, but I didn't buy them for that 🤷🏼♂️
Thank you for this useful post. I have just fixed my aeropexes so didn't need to buy another pair. They were out of warranty by a year, I think. Tip for some, maybe, I actually used milliput epoxy putty. £5 for 113.4g so better value putty and not single use sachets so could do lots of repairs to things around the home. It does just the same job. Thanks again.
Thanks for that Jason and glad you got rid of that pesky rattle. The milliput epoxy putty sounds like a good idea. I ended up looking around to see if there was anything I could use my spare Sugru on before it went hard. I did manage to cover a fraying section of an iPhone charging cable so that lessened the sting of chucking the rest in the bin. Thanks for watching 👍
Hello I had the same issue and it happened to even a replacement headset that I received, so I hope they fix that issue because they really are the best bone conducting headphones.
I was able to fix mine making with a utility knife a very small hole but in the bottom close to the outside edge (so wont be so noticeable) and pushing in some soft plastic, I think something that gets hard will affect the sound, so it worked.
Yeah, it seems to be a very common issue with these headphones. I don’t think it’s down to mishandling them but rather poor materials, e.g. glue, on the part of Aftershokz. It sounds like your fix may have worked better than mine because I did get a deterioration in sound quality. They still work for what I need them to do but I will be slow to go back to Aftershokz. Thanks for watching 👍
My shokz openrun rattle from the day I found them in the parking lot.
Yeah, definitely poor construction…but just good enough that most people’s warranty has expired by the time the rattle begins. Shame on Aftershokz.
I wonder if they could be fixed in a similar way to yours, but by injecting some hot glue through a tiny drilled hole. Need to try this method, cause no sugru glue avaulable here.
My cat bit through one of the battery areas on my air treks, I'm trying to find out if they're still safe to use as I see no leakage.
Personally if they still worked ok and there was no leakage I would continue using. You could use some of the Sugru I use in the video to cover the chewed area. I used it recently on an iPhone lead that had become frayed and it covers the impacted area and gives me greater confidence about continuing to use it.
It's works fine but that bass is low on the right side after the rattling and microphone is gone :( . So me Dad ended up buying the new openrun pro. He really loves these one's. Thank you for the fix anyways.
Hi Eliott, same here, my bass also went way way down after the fix. They are still fine for podcasts but not great for music.
Are they still working 1 yr later
Still working but the sound quality is really only good enough for podcasts.
Hi, Can I do it if the rattle is on the left side?
Yes, it’s the same process on both sides. Actually, in the video, I fix the left side also after I have finished with the right hand side. Best of luck with it 👍

I put some cotton inside, then sealed with putty
That works too 👍💡
저도 구멍뚫고 솜을 밀어 넣어 해결했어요~
I tried to fix it but now there is no sound from that side :(
maybe I broke it while drilling
I’m sorry to hear that. Yeah, I was careful to keep a watchful eye on how close I was to breaking through the outer plastic. It sounds like the situation is not salvageable but If I were you the first thing I would do is try resetting your headphones:
Start with your headphones powered off.
Enter pairing mode by pressing and holding the volume+ button for 5-7 seconds. Your headphones will turn on, and then the LED light will flash red and blue.
Press and hold the multifunction button, volume+ button and volume- button simultaneously for 3-5 seconds. You'll hear beeps and/or feel vibrations.
Turn your headphones off. Your headphones are now reset and can be re-paired to your device. In addition, I suggest going into the Bluetooth settings on your device and deleting or forgetting your AfterShokz, then turning the device off and back on again before beginning the pairing process.
Good luck
I have the same problem. How is the repair holding up?
Everything is still working fine but the bass has diminished. I never found them great for music anyway but they are definitely reserved for podcasts now. Remember though, if they are less then 2 years old Aftershocks will replace.
@@filmmytrailrun Thanks, I tried the repair but don't think I drilled far enough (just through the rubber). Mine are at least 4 yrs old.
I also have a pair of Aeropex that developed bad rattles in both ears. Since they are out of warranty, I found and followed the Sugru method, and it did fix the rattle. Unfortunately, it also severely affected the sound quality of the headphones. Nearly all of the bass is gone, and there is a massive spike in the high-mids which makes them so shrill that they are no longer even suitable to listen to voice-only podcasts, let alone music. Some amount of movement of the internals seems to be intentional.
I didn't try to pack them full or anything even close to it, but I suspect that I used too much Sugru, restraining the internals to the point that they can't do their thing. For anyone else who wants to try this method, I would suggest pushing in only a little Sugru at a time, stopping absolutely as soon as the rattle is inhibited. In this case, I think that less is more.
Yeah, I never found the music quality was great from the aftershocks even before the rattle but after the fix, mine at least, were only good for podcasts. Given the popularity of this video it is clear that a great many people have had the same issue. “We’ll give you a 10% discount off a new pair”, give me a break. I would be very slow to buy from this company again.
Thanks for sharing
Thanks Paul. I’m still using the Aeropex but wouldn’t buy another pair.
Do they still work after the fix?
Yep they still work. The bass is not so good but it wasn’t great to start with. Still use them though and with the rattle they were only fit for the bin.
Mine isn't charging anymore can you give me a solution?
I’m sorry to hear that. No, I didn’t have that issue so I am not sure how it can be resolved.
@@filmmytrailrun oh, thank you so much
@@filmmytrailrun if its under warranty they should replace it. Other than that if water or sweat was in the charging port. It would of gave you a warning light of red and blue when plugged in. If you ignored it it may of causd your issue then.
Thank you!
No worries, I hope it helped. I have been using my Aeropex this week for listening to a podcast (The Execution of Bonny Lee) and they are still working fine. Just not very good for music..but then they were never good for that.
@@filmmytrailrun can these aeropex be use in water? I mean, for swimmers...
@@skolotoi4588 No, their Spec. sheet states they are not suitable for swimming.
@@filmmytrailrun oh, ok. Thank you! 🙏
Mine came rattling right out of the box. Perhaps it is a feature, not a bug ;-p
Ha, for sure it is something Aftershokz must be very much aware of at this stage. They are taking timed obsolescence to a whole new level.
100% not supposed to do it.
Had the same and warranty replaced them....the factory new replacement is now completly dead afte 2 Years and 6months bad quality i did not even use them daily.
Yeah, so many people appear to have experienced the same issue. I would certainly think twice before purchasing from Aftershokz again.
Rattle is gone, but so are low frequencies:( I'll buy another brand
Yep, same happened for me. Still use them for podcasts though. I will never buy Aftershockz again 😡
👍
Thank you 🙏
Thanks
No worries, I hope it helped you.
fix rattle
Yeah, good to be rid of that pesky rattle 👍
