    It's not usually being too expensive. Most of the time it's because it's too cheap. When people buy cheap things they expect them not to last long or to fall apart. Buying a handmade item, they want something that will last. If your item isn't priced in that range, then you will lose sales. BUT, and this is a big one, if your images and branding do not match your price range, then you will not get sales. It goes back to being cohesive. Prices are part of that cohesion.

      HedgehogandRabbit I definitely agree with this. Charge what you're worth. People who undercharge bring the whole market down.

      I hate these consumerism mind games as a buyer because I start second guessing everything and getting suspicious.

    • @heartlandranchtv4943
      @heartlandranchtv4943 6 лет назад +2

      Luna - Don't think of them as 'consumerism mind games'; it's just about having an understanding of basic human psychology. Evolution has 'hard wired' us for certain thought patterns and behaviors, and as a salesperson you have to be able to harmonize with those patterns if you want to connect most effectively with your customers. The reason why most small businesses fail is because most wannabe entrepreneurs either don't know the fundamentals of sales and business, or don't know how to properly implement them.

    It's soOOooo difficult to get people to leave feedback. I've asked people by putting hand written notes in with the items as well as through messages on etsy. I've even had people message me on instagram and tell me how much they loved the item and then I'll be thrilled of course but I'll also ask them to review it on etsy... and nothing

      I always tried to be nice buyer because when I was a single Mum I thought maybe this lady like me want to sell make money to look after her children buying food , toys or paying the bills, that why I always leave nice feedback as a can, but lets bless all buyer and seller on the Etsy and think positive

      We live in a selfish society and people don't give a crap. The Bible speaks about the time which will come and people will be lovers of self. It's happening. They will leave a negative review in a heartbeat, though.

    You're totally right about adding overseas shipping. In Australia, we buy a huge amount from the rest of the world; a lot of stuff can be v expensive here & we don't have the opportunity for quick shopping jaunts to neighbouring countries like they do in the UK etc - so we're normally happy to pay postage. A word of advice though, some people have tried to overcharge us substantially for postage; but they forgot that we also have access to UPS Online for the correct price LOL. Also, sometimes it's cheaper to post something as a letter or package type than 'parcel' (depending on measurements) because we receive them often - so experiment with the website or talk to the UPS clerk next time you're there about their large pre-paid envelopes for overseas. Good luck.

    it's super hard to get a review,I've reminded customers and they still don't do it, I've gotten a few customers who wants discounts for ridiculous reasons,for example if I sell an item with assorted colors or designs and they only want one design or color they assume it should be cheaper,I've made a private sale for a customer because she didn't want all that was in the original sale, we agreed on the price and after it was made, she questioned the price again and never purchased the item,I go out of my way for my customers, they never have to wait more than 3 minutes before I reply,I send a photo of the finished product before I ship them out, but I think people just don't care for small businesses and would prefer to make a complain than to say they were happy with their purchase.

    • @dlm4708
      @dlm4708 5 лет назад +7

      Hon, after almost 15 years in the industry, I have to tell people this: the more you cater towards impossibly 'fussy' customers, the more you allow customers to nitpick, the more bad customers you attract. Are there bad sellers? Oh yes, and I've been on the recieving end of more than a few. But bad customers are something no one ever talks about- customers who want to keep arguing in the hopes you'll give them discounted or free stuff, customers who want "no solution" (ie there is literally nothing you can do to make them happy. They are only going to give a bad review for your troubles in the hopes that you will crack and give them free stuff.) You see these same people in restaurants lying to managers about hair in their food (when it is very clearly the customers' own hair) or about something else to get a free meal.
      The only solution is to not allow that behaviour. Make your questions and offers very concise and clear. State your absolute limitations up front. Do not make your work harder on yourself. If they want to try to push you outside of those stated boundaries, NO, you cannot accept their order and you wish them luck in finding the right shop. Also, you should cancel sales from anyone who makes a purchase and immediately starts a fight- I've had a few of those. Example: a woman bought beads and then got angry over the shipping price. It is stated on EVERY listing that shipping overages are refunded. Her refund was processed in less than 24 hours (actually less than 4). I showed her this, happily and politely. She threw a FIT about the whopping $6 for half a dozen items she paid. Which she actually didn't pay because I refunded some of that. Cue more 'online screaming'. Nope! Not in my store! I refunded her full purchase and cancelled the sale. She sent more nastygrams about THAT. Welp, that's a banhammer offense. There is clearly nothing that can be done about people like her.
      Those people are not our "customers". Those people are like that because they have Issues. You are not a therapist (or are you?) Dealing with them is not your job. Do not entertain them.

    Hi Holly
    I love that you brought up international shipping.
    I live in Norway and here we are used to paying high shipping prices and then tax on top of that if the item is over 20 dollars. I get so bummed out when I see Etsy sellers not selling stuff I want to buy from them because they do not offer international shipping. As I said we are used to paying high shipping costs if there is something we really love, want or need.
    Also since we have to pay high shipping costs a international customer will usually buy more stuff from that one Etsy shop so that they feel they can outweigh the shipping cost :)
    I especially buy all my postcards on Etsy. This usually ends up costing me 2,5 times of what the postcards themselves cost with shipping. But, I get handmade postcards that are adorable and not mass produced :) As I said I will buy it if I love the product even though the shipping is high.
    Another example regarding shipping. My dog had to remove his second eye. He was 10 years at the time and the only quality dog stroller that could be used for hiking in the woods I could get my hands on was in Canada. I ended up getting 1 stroller for the price of 3 with the shipping cost and tax. In this case I needed that stroller for my dog and I was willing to buy it even with the high shipping cost.
    Thanks for posting this video!

    If you really want to up your feedback number- include a note in your packaging that says something along the lines of “please consider leaving a review- we love hearing feedback and it helps us out a ton :)”. I’ve gotten a great response rate with this- one out of every four orders for me. You could also DM everyone who orders maybe a week later asking for a review.

    Etsy is to blame for not leaving a feedback. Etsy doesn't send reminders to customers for feedback. Its difficult to figure out how or where to leave feedback. They just don't seem to know how to make it easy.

    Hi Holly. You gave some really great and REAL advice here!! I just wanted to add one other thing to your list because this is what I found is going on with my shop. I have about 4 items that sell regularly and the rest won't even get a view! So I went in and did a search for items similar to one of mine that didn't get any play and found that the category had extensive items that were similar. So if there's too many similar items, the chances of yours being seen before the customer finds a similar one to buy is slim! For example - the ones that are selling regularly only have 10 or less pages in the search results so a customer may browse all 10 pages. But in the case of a search that results in 250 pages of like items - the customer will most likely purchase one of those from the first few pages of results so yours may have never been seen.
    So now, when I'm starting a new design, I search it first. If there's too many in that category I either won't even bother or I try to view as many as I can to feel what's missing from those already out there and/or to see what I could do to stand out in that crowd.

    • @galaboutique7132
      @galaboutique7132 9 лет назад

      Heres a specific example: I have a "whales" themed baby shower invite. After I listed it, I did a "whales baby shower invitations" search. Oh my - there were 34 pages of results!
      I have a Mommy-to Bee design that sells regularly. That search "Mommy to Bee Baby Shower Invitations" only has 7 pages of results!
      This difference can make or break your design's success!!

    This sounds awful, but as a customer, I could never figure out HOW to leave feedback! It's probably really easy and I'm just dense, but I should have taken the time to ask the seller--how do I do this? I never had problems leaving feedback on Ebay, but Etsy--I'd try to figure it out and just get really frustrated. Hopefully it's easier these days.

      I think it's a good idea to ask the seller. I have never bought or sold anything on etsy, just visited the website, so I don't know how to do it either, but I think if the seller wants you to review them then they'll probably be happy to help you. If not, it's their loss, I guess.

  • @spitzybanger5571
    @spitzybanger5571 6 лет назад

    In regards to international shipping: No package can be tracked with accuracy once it leaves US soil. Therefore if a customer wants to scam you, and claim they did not receive the package....or maybe it does get lost in the shipping process...there's no way to track it ...and you will lose that battle and be forced to refund the money which puts you out of the item you made, and the money you potentially made from the sale, and shipping. I had this happen to me one too many times back in 2011 through 2014....I said enough was enough..and I refuse to ship where I can not track.

    4:50 after listening to that part here immediately the creative side of the artist comes to mind. When you are really creating something there can't be terms like "outdated" or not "trendy" because it's interrupting and defeating the purpose of creativity. When you are looking at creative work it must be strange or different and cannot be too much like other things. That's the whole idea. If you don't sell you might not be selling because it's not the right type of customer. The problem might be that the right customer might not be using the internet to do this kind of shopping.

    I find your information extremely invaluable! I'm really struggling on etsy. If there is anyone reading this now, I'd love to get some feedback please. I think I have got most of the things down that you suggest, however I'm on the fence with what I have on my site, because I do a number of things, but I like to think that they compliment each other I don't know. I'm going to put my crafts into the studio and see if that makes a difference. Thank you all the same.

    Trying to get people to leave reviews on etsy is like pulling teeth. Believe me I have done EVERYTHING to get people to leave reviews for my shop. Including EVERYTHING folks recommend you do to get reviews on your shop. So it is not that a lot of us don't do everything possible, it is that regardless of all the advice and recommendations we sellers are given, some of us still aren't going to get high sales or reviews. Even with trendy stuff, even with the best pics etc, etc.........We are at the mercy of the public and buyers but we love what we do and just have to keep trucking at it.

    I'm concerned about your point about "prices are too low", and how people with serious prices have to consider to lower their prices to compete (which is of course true, marketing-wise). But I'm really shocked when I see the prices of people's products on Etsy. Sometimes wonder if they just add up the costs of their materials together with the Etsy fee... How the hell are people want to make a living with their art? And it's really creating a delusional exeptation of how much art should cost. Off topic maybe, but I'm just curious about the people's thinking process behind pricing their artworks on Etsy.

    Great video for newbies. My question to you is...what's a person to do who's sold on Etsy for years, was doing great up until this year, when everything's just inexplicably tanked? This has to do with Etsy itself & all the ridiculous changes they make, so what's your suggestion?

    Holly, I am starting a Fine Jewlery Etsy shop here in the next few weeks and want to make sure that I do it correctly.. Do you do any personal mentorship programs for people to ensure that they get their shop making sales ASAP? or help with coaching on keywords, advertising, blogging, fan interaction etc.

Hand written notes, get back to customer right away on messages, etc etc etc. I am an artist and I guess people think my items are crap. Etsians say my work is gorgeous!

      Do you advertise yourself on social media and with friends etc?
      People need to know about you.
      I personally think instagram is a great place to get yourself out there. People need to see you and need to get excited for you.
      If that is possible with your products, gift friends an item you make for birthdays and such.
      For example I make jewellery and want to soon start selling it and I often wear it myself, my mum wears some of it and when people ask I tell them about it, I often give a bracelet or so to friends on their birthdays and so on.
      Just looking but not buying is always a problem. I have sold my stuff at craft markets/fairs and if 100 people look, maybe 5 actually buy something. It is probably worse online as the awkwardness of seeing the seller and them expecting you to buy is not a factor.

    Never send spam by Etsy convo. Asking for reviews is spam. That is a very bad idea. Always send a hand written note with orders.

    Great video. I think you have a natural talent. Just a helpful tip about pushing your hair back repeatedly. I know it's a habit when it falls over your eye ( I do the same thing lol). It's distracting in the video though. Maybe bobby pin the side up for your videos. Other than that you have great camera presence. Thanks for the Etsy tips!
