milestoneman Yeah, me too. To this day I don't understand how little attention this song gets. I think it's one of his best. PM was always the "happy" Beatle but there's a real melancholy side of him. Songs like this, Dear Friend, Little Willow, are some of my favorites of his. cheers
I want to say thanks to you for putting your lessons online. I have been playing guitar since 1970 or so and consider myself a decent finger picker. All learned the hard way, you know what I mean. Since finding your site, I have gone back to play all those tunes I found tough to figure out, including JUNK! Which is fairly easy to play. I remember working in a restaurant on Cannery Row around 1982 and heard this guitar player out by the bar playing BlackBird, which my mind just couldn't grasp at the time.... It was just after the 70s so I was still recovering... LOL. But I asked that guitar player to show me how he played it. Then I realized I needed to know my fret board and understand the octave changes. That took another 10 years as there was no internet and lessons were 15 an hour. Ultimately, now at 61 years old and can still pay attention, I learn these tunes from you in a day or so of practice. You are definitely the best instructor of technical playing I have seen. Congrats,. Peter
Hi Peter, also try youtube for a guy named PRIVETTRICKER or JAMES JAMES.......sort by "lessons" for learning, or many others of his just show him playing along with songs........ great to follow either way!
I am constantly amazed how seemingly simply yet surprisingly complex McCartney's music is, getting the rhythm just right is the key to this melodic piece to resonate so wonderfully-one little miss and the whole "house of cards" comes down-thank you for you wonderful lesson and your musicianship-nobody on RUclips matches your understanding and touch with this beautiful piece:)
I remember when I first heard this from McCartney first solo album and I was mesmerized by the melody and second that he was such a good guitarist. A friend of mine knew how to play it.And I always wanted him to show me how to play it but he moved away. But it always was in the back of my in to learn it. Thanks for your wonderful tutorial. It brought back memories.
I was about eight years old when McCartney's fist solo album came out and the two songs which had a huge impact were "Maybe I'm Amazed" and "Junk". The next album was Ram and that was the album that really made me want to learn to play guitar and sing. I formed my first band at 15 which was the start of a thirty year dream. I was 19 when I joined my first professional band and those two albums were the cause to that effect! My favorite album of all time is Ram. Back to the 'McCartney" album - most songs take time to really grow on you, but "Junk" took my heart immediately! In my opinion Junk is McCartney's most under rated and under appreciated song. The chord structure is 100% McCartney and the entire world knows Lennon/McCartney are the greatest rock/pop collaboration in rock/pop history without any shadow doubt. Of all four Beatles, McCartney's solo material and his prolific output are simply unmatched. There's quite a lot of great rock bands who have also pumped out multiple albums but for me personally, you'll usually have one or maybe two songs on each album that you come to love. With the Beatles and McCartney's solo material, every album without exception, were the exact reverse to where you might not dig one or two songs, or, you might not like a song or two compared to the rest of each albums. Of all McCartney's lyrics, ( I was lead vocalist/writer/rhythm guitar) and again, in my personal opinion, Junk, which is a masterpiece of simplicity; meaning it's one of those rare awesome songs where it's an acoustic guitar up front and vocals, it's not busy. So, the music and lyrics are in perfect symbiotic harmony. But the lyrics, the philosophical message which speaks to how wealth and material things don't bring happiness and fulfillment, where material things eventually break down and end up in a dump. It's about taking our focus off these things and instead focus on life, love , family, friends and happiness which does bring fulfillment and joy. For reasons unknown to me, this song has been overlooked and grossly underappreciated. McCartney masterfully weaved music and lyrics together which on their own merits are both as emotionally powerful as anything McCartney or the Beatles have written. Thanks for the instruction, I've always meant to get around to learning this and just never got around to it. Been watching you for a while and I’ve just realized that you must be Canadian 🙃 🇨🇦. Can hear it now that I’ve been out of the country for a while. Thanks for all of this great work!
You guys are my homies. I was born in Los Angeles in 1958. Started playing at 12. By the time I was 14 I was playing zepplin (Over the Hills and Far Away) and ELP (From the Beginnig),etc. I love Floyd and was an avid Beatle fan all my life. When the chldren came, I put the guitar down, but just got a new Breedlove Oregon. Nice! So I'm back! Never too late, right?
Finally getting around to this... Been on the list for years BUT HOW ABOUT THAT WAY TO FINGER AN A (around the 10:50 mark) . Wish I had thought of that one years ago!
Always loved Junk, beautiful seemingly simple melody which I stumbled through in my own fashion. Now, thanks to you I can play it right! Macca is a genius and you are a great teacher. I’d tale my hat off to both of you, if I ever wore one! More Beatles please!
just watched your Julia lesson and happened upon this one. you are so dedicated to giving/sharing your gift to those of us who can't put two chords together without a helping hand. kudos and thank you for doing this for us I enjoy how you openly point out what's even difficult for you, rather than make it look effortless. it let's us know that by learning from you...it's OK... and thank you...for giving 'the boys' their due...respecting their talents and abilities. after all...we're not here because of you...or me... we're here because 4 young guys came out of nowhere to change humanity. The Beatles were 'The Big Bang' in countless ways.
Many thanks for taking the time to work this song out and to share for us all, really appreciate it. I've always loved this song and wanted to play it, your lesson is so clear and concise, and you slow it down great so that I'm going to be able to. Many lessons on here skip bits or go through them too quickly but yours are bang on and also love the way you have included the extra little phrases and licks, which are great for being able to play correctly, many many thanks .
You are legendary sir! Learned Her Majesty from you and am learning this now, too. Really appreciate the way you teach the song. Especially in the little bits of you talking about how much you admire the song and the writer, and teach alternate ways of playing it, I like how the bits of genuine passion come through. Definitely developing a player from these. Thank you!
This was a thoroughly enjoyable session. Your approach to teaching is amongst the very best I've come along. You really "get" what makes these tunes special, and make them easy to learn. Great taste in your selections too. Terrific stuff on your channel! Thanks for sharing your valuable knowledge!
I've just stumbled upon this lesson after trying--and being dissatisfied with--the chords on ultimate guitar chords. Isn't this great? I think I'll be able to pull this one off after working through this video.
I have always loved this song more so the instrumental version.A true classic McCartney song. After seeing this lesson I'm going to have to learn it.I like your way of teaching songs..keep up the good work !!!.
Dude....your the greatest teacher ever....so glad I stumbled upon your channel ....love everything your teaching....even some songs I thought I knew , I didn't know it the right way....awesome... thanks man...so glad you take the time to explain everything so thoroughly....
I think we all appreciate the time and effort you put into making your videos so enjoyable and rewarding. You kind of set the bar on many of these from a teaching standpoint. Cheerz again!
That's one of the songs that inspired me to learn guitar since I was a little kid , unfortunately life took me for ways that I wasn't supposed to take , lol , I play it anyway now , but not as great as you , practice practice is what I need , thank you !.
I'm learning this song! The thing that blocks me a little is the hand that gets tired of always making the barre. But I'll do it somehow, thanks for this video!
I have the same problem. The index finger just doesn't get enough leverage force for the steel strings. I found positioning my thumb close to the bridge helps. Also rejecting the false myth that you can't get good tone from low action and light (.01) strings.
Sorry. I meant to say moving the thumb up towards the "NUT 0 fret". That aligns the index finger in front of the palm of your hand rather than away from it, where it's unsupported.
It also helps to keep your barre finger very close to the fret so that you can feel the fret under it. It's really much harder if your finger is even a little bit away from the fret wire.
I think, on a closer listen, that the second chord of the song is: D string @ 3rd fret; G string @ 4th fret; B string @ 2nd fret; and E string at 4th fret. Your lessons are the best I've found on the internet as far a playing the correct chords, inversions and picking patterns. 😁
I know it’s the exact same chords and frets, that’s how u play guitar, but it’s always magic when you play and learn a new song and ur playing the same progression as Paul or the talented guy on screen and u finally get the shape, sound, placement correct.
great lesson I've played it so long ago never really played exactly like that but I think I had problems separating the two guitars great job i really appreciate the songs you teach thanx

Paul wrote a real gem here. This is one bit of Junk you don't want to get rid of....
fjf sjdnx you’re actually upset that someone enjoyed a song
fjf sjdnx not really sure why you’re insulting me. The way way I read that made it sound like you were making fun of him for being old
