    The lack of RAW and IBIS really hurt in a 6 grand body, but anymore it seems like we need a studio cam, and a run & gun cam to keep up with the market. But after this, I probably will go with the C70. I want to save as much time and possibility of error

    No, it’s not better than the C200B. 12bit RAW cannot even be compared with 10bit. Watch Crimson Engine’s video comparing 12bit vs. 10bit vs. 8bit. You can export 12bit RAW to any 10bit codec you need but you CANNOT magically make a 12bit file out of a 10bit one. That alone makes the C200/B a better camera than the C70.

    A BMPCC6k user here, and though my camera is way cheaper than this C70, I am still very excited for the potential upgrade, which may seem off, since my set up can do 6k and has a great dynamic range with an EF mount. However, the built-in NDs, two XLR inputs, and great canon AF brings a lot of value to me and the type of shoots I do.
    The BMPCC6k was/is a great purchase for me to make post-graduation as its what I could afford at the time. However, now that projects are steady, I definitely want to invest in the C70. Especially since RF glass is Canon's future, and as someone who owns EF glass, making the transition over the next few years is the move I want to make.
    I should also mention I shoot stills as well, and having a set of RF lenses to use on my cinema camera and my EOS R is soooo good! Very happy with this hybrid cinema camera Canon is making!

    C70 looks really interesting for me. I'm disappointed with the mini-xlr because I use sennheiser avx mics where the receiver plugs directly into a full size xlr input and I don't need to worry about other mounting options. That's really convenient.
    Also the V90 cards aren't cheap. I just got a Wise CFExpress type B 128gb for my Panasonic S1. It is super fast and cost $175 from B&H. Where as a Panasonic 128gb V90 card costs $400 from B&H, which is slower. You can get Angelbird 128gb for $200, but it's still more expensive and slower than the Wise CFexpress type b. Ultimately, I would have liked to have seen Canon have cfexpress type b slots, or at least 1, but that's just because I'm happy to invest into that media. Other people might prefer using slower SD cards they already own. Can't please everyone all the time!

    As a C200 & EOS R owner, this looks pretty tasty, BUT these are my concerns: no CLOG (to match with EOS R, though it has the other CLOG flavors); no EVF, though not a dealbreaker; and probably most importantly - price point.

    I’m guessing DGO captures pixel in one photosite, and when it’s read out it’s signal is feed to two different OP-AMPs so you have two different levels of analog gain. Then you sample the two signal with ADCs and pick the best value (with some HDR algo). If signal is low, use the high gain analog. If signal is high, use the low gain analog. Optimal analog gain for all of the picture.
    Similar to FpADC for analog audio, or HDR workflows in photoshop. Capture at different gain and select the best value.
    So almost like dual native ISOs sampled for each shot, only it just happens in the gain stage.
    But I’m just guessing, I’m sure there’s a patent somewhere if you want to know for sure.

    I see there are a bunch of C200 owners talking about changing to the C70. For me, as a C200 owner and lover - I'll think twice before considering a switch.
    The processing, storage, and NLE system technologies are growing so exponentially that the issues we are facing now should be distant memories in a year or two.
    I still believe that to have the RAW capability is preferable, it simply opens up so many delivery possibilities.
    Ask the question - "if the data storage and transfer rate issues are dealt with, would I want to limit myself to two or three acceptable codecs, or rather have the capacity to transcode into almost any codec I want to - 8 bit, 10 bit, 12 bit - 420, 422, 444 etc .... all within a matter of minutes?"
    Because it's coming. What is happening today was unthinkable two years ago, and I believe that soon we will be forgetting about the C200 RAW storage and transfer conversations we are seeing today.
    At least I hope so ... so for now, I'll be putting my faith in the C200 and the rapid expansion of RAW management technology.
    As that happens I cannot imagine a better cine camera at the price.
    Any thoughts on this?

    Take a look at the C300 Mark III Sensor tests done by CineD vs the tests Gerald Undone did. Shows that the A7s III is 13 stops of usable and the C300 III sensor has 12.8 useable stops, while the Alexa measures around 14. IMATEST isn't subjective, but for me there are a lot of subject reasons each image behaves differently. For example, CineD with the IMATEST system measured the C500 Mark II at 13.1 since they observed slightly higher range in the highlights. But you could argue that since the C300 Mark III has cleaned shadows you can finally expose for the highlights without clipping and still have tons of room in the shadows to lift. I think in the end, a shooters lens collection may be a more important factor in choosing an upgrade theses days than camera specs alone since everything is amazing and we are unbelievably spoiled.

    • @alexlubensky
      @alexlubensky 3 года назад

      I've done tests of c300 mk III personally, and, while I have to admit that AT LAST - Canon has done a wonderful sensor, the noise is there, especially if we're talking about RAW. It's somewhere in the range of -1,5 or -2 stops better, compared to an Epic MX / Alexa in the shadows. After -6 there's a clear sensor/noise smear in RAW. The shadow noise in raw renders in green and magenta. I highly doubt the idea of super-usable shadows, it's more like - you're in the Helium/Gemini range in terms of DR. Which is really good for most occasions, and there's no real need to dip into shadows with 6+ stops of highlight latitude in RAW. I can confirm it's something in the range of 13 stops in RAW. In XF-AVC shot in c-log2 - the DR is way less in highlights (1-1.5 stops less) and the image is by far less noisy (a ton of NR seem to happen). But +3 or -3 stops - and the color is kind of washed out of the image, totally unusable - like a sepia colored image. Both c300 mkIII and c70 - are extremely capable cameras, nothing like this I could have imagined two years ago even. The AF, the form-factor, the ease of use, the weight - all makes them an extremely capable cameras, especially for a limited crew. While c70 is clearly not for a production style of jobs, I'd rather buy a c70 over a Komodo if I was doing events etc - it just checks more boxes for smaller jobs, easier to use etc. While for productions I'd choose a Komodo (SDI, RAW, rigging options etc).

    I can't believe a commenter on a different channel said to me that this is not a professional cinema camera. When I asked him why he felt that way, he could;t give me an answer. I think part of the problem is due to he's a Sony shooter, plus this camera doesn't have raw. As for not having raw, it would be nice to have, but I know that Canon will not throw every feature in this camera.

    The reason you’re seeing a difference between the C70 and C300iii is because they were shooting raw on the c300. In Gerald Undone’s video on the c300iii he showed the same results where the xfavc holds better to under exposure than the raw for some reason

    • @stalmanplus
      @stalmanplus  4 года назад

      The one difference in worried about is the the raw versions hold the highlight saturation much better. Hopefully it’s not very visible

    • @jonathanmasters2178
      @jonathanmasters2178 4 года назад

      Stalman Podcast, totally. The thing to remember is this result is identical to the c300iii. Raw holds more highlight saturation, but noise comes in faster when under exposed compared to the xfavc. This is just the nature of linear vs log. So if you have c300iii and are not shooting raw you will have same results as C70. With built in Nd up to 10 stops you should never have to worry about blowing the highlights. In Gerald Undone’s video he shows that you don’t gain anything with exposing to the right on this sensor and the amount of room in the shadows means just expose properly or under with this camera. Probably the most straight forward camera / sensor on the market when it comes to exposure!

    I hate that the canon c70 has a RF mount. The good side of it is that you can mount any adapters on the camera which is fine, but the downside is, that it's a fucking adapter. A adapter by time will always becomes loose and then when you for example have wireless focus of you change focus or zoom, the whole lens starts to shake because the adapter is loose. I enjoyed your video even though my am not a videographer but an engineer. Sixteen bits is clearly not exactly as stated due to the magic in "dual gain" sensor tricks which involve noise reduction trickery as well. Some form of "AI noise reduction" no doubt. The images will look better as if they were nearly 16 bits so it is a new way of interpreting dual gain 16bits meaning which gets trickier and non standard among camera makers.

      I have the Komodo ST too (which I LOVE!). Here's why I'm getting this camera too. 1. Long format recording (optimal file size, 10 bit 4:2:2 is plenty when properly exposed) 2. Cheap media, with the ability to record to both cards in different formats 3. First camera I wouldn't actually rig up beyond included components. I think it's the perfect easy go-to for events, travel, weddings, etc. 4. Amazing autofocus and for what I'd use this camera for, I'd actually use it 95% of the time 5. .71x focal reducer for the best of both worlds of full-frame but s35 sensor. 6. Great ND's (the RF to EF drop-in has a massive color shift. Hoped to use it on the Komodo but ended up returning it). 7. Much more internal audio control eliminating the need for an external recorder for multiple audio inputs. These are just the top reasons but I have many more :)

      Brandon hit a lot of the points, it’s still a tough choice. Komodo will always win in terms of image quality, but the versatility and speed of the C70 just makes sense for a lot of projects. Double the battery life, triple the card capacity, no rig required

    Hey I've been questioning this over the A7S3 but you know it's great because us the consumer wins with the competition! Because the Sony FX6 is coming out soon and if they do with that what they've done with the PS5 by undercutting Microsoft, if song undercut canon with the FX6 that's going to be mind blowing as I'm hedging my bets on the FX6 taking the lead out of the FX6 & C70. Because the FX6 will be full frame and have e mount meaning bone of this needing £800 adapters to use newer more expensive full frame canon lenses!. Should have made the C70 full frame but again canon didn't because didn't want to affect the higher price cinema cameras, which they already have with the C70 so why not just go full frame!. But ya it's great for us because I bet bet Sony is reducing the price of the FX6 from what they were going to charge in light of the C70 price!.

    you're the camera guy along with gerald and camera conspiracies that i trust. both the komodo and c70 are awesome.
    here are some questions.
    1. are you excited with the speedbooster. would like to compare the metabones or the official ones. a reliable 3rd party that have been doing it for years or the official from canon.
    2. didn't you say you're going to make a real review for r6 and r5 purely from the photography perspective.
    3. which one would you prefer. red komodo with the red raw or c70 with autofocus and built in nd

      1. I consider that canon speedbooster a must buy with the C70. I’d stick with the canon
      2. I have a video coming talking about which R to buy

    I WILL buy a new cine camera 4th quarter this year to replace/downsize my RED Dragon. As of right now, Komodo is in the lead (hard to argue with a 16bit global shutter RED thats half the size as the one I already own..yumm), closely followed by A7S3 (which I’ve cancelled twice...doh!) C70 third, BMPCC6K fourth. Just need to see what this FX6 is all about before I pull the trigger. The amusing thing about all of these is that they are all lacking something quite useful that others of them have.

    • @stalmanplus
      @stalmanplus  4 года назад +1

    • @loudandclearmedia
      @loudandclearmedia 4 года назад

      @@stalmanplus Yeah, that's pretty much where I'm at too. Komodo looks to be the best image quality of all of them, and that's what it's ultimately about right? Having said that, in typical RED fashion it does little else. But hey, it has autofocus now, and all the footage I've seen looks...well, it looks like a RED, and that's a better look than all the others IMO. To get that RED look, with autofocus, and be able to fly it on a compact gimbal, for ~$6k?!. I'm actually surprised Komodo isn't more recognized amongst all the Canon and Sony videos. A7S3, like I said, is a close second. It's full frame, sensor stabilized 4K60/120 10 bit internal, likely the best autofocus on the planet, eternal RAW capable, and 3500 bucks. Theres a lot to like there. The real question I ask about the C70 is at it's price point, does the image look better than the Komodo? From what I've seen of Komodo, and the little we've seen from C70, I'd say no.

    • @stalmanplus
      @stalmanplus  4 года назад

      The Komodo looks better, hands down. Sadly it will probably be convenience over image quality that win the day for me. NDs, audio, slow motion and massive battery life will matter more for the jobs I do right now, although I wish clients would care more about my pristine 24p

What I should do is just by the A7S3 for all the reasons it would be the best choice of the bunch (it's unquestionably the best value of the latest bunch).....ahh, I don't know...lol

    Good afternoon, congratulations on the review. I currently have a SONY HXR NX80, I am a freelance cameraman and I would like to evolve. I am interested in the Canon C70 with a 100-500 lens or Sony A7Siii with a 100-400- lens, which do you think would be the best option considering that I would need it to record ballet in theaters where it would be located in the audio room in the background and only with the stage light. The precision of the autofocus is very important to me and the camera would be on a tripod with a zoom servo. Thank you very much and greetings from Lima Peru.

    • @RiceCubeTech

      They’re honestly so similar as far as video quality and frame rates but used for very different things. The c70 is much larger and much more expensive. The siii is cheaper and more portable but arguably has a worse lens selection (though I don’t think the differences will show as much in 4K video as they would in 24mpstills). The c70 has internal NDs, but if that’s not important, it also has better audio inputs, but if you go with the siii they have external audio that communicates with the camera. It really just depends.

      The Blackmagic 6k has abysmal rolling shutter, no nd filters, BRaw and log footage from that camera is more challenging in post (than canon), it has less dynamic range, and terrible battery life plus no autofocus or image stabilization of any kind ...but you get 6k and raw for $2,000. If you don’t shoot fast moving subjects, have the extra set up/breakdown time, encoding time, don’t need autofocus, don’t need reasonable battery life, don’t need nds, and are talented at color correcting/grading, and have the hard drive space and computer hardware to edit these efficiently, it would be a great option. It’s a dream for certain ecosystems, but the reasons above are why It’s not ideal in most situations

    Nah! I'd rather save more and wait for Arri to release a new camera than do canon or Red or blackmagic or Sony. I noticed that Arri protect their customers and let them use a camera for a long time. These other companies just keep releasing stuff like it's candy. FIRMWARE UPGRADEABLE is basically useless as they almost never upgrade anything significant. The truth is, if you have good lenses, no one will ever know you used a C this or that. In the end, composition, lighting (more durable gear), art direction, and story take centre stage. Once a camera can afford you the luxury of RAW, then it's possibilities are almost endless.
