The R1200GS Valdez

  • While I was riding on Squaw Peak road I heard a little "plink" sound as I passed over a rock in the road. I didn't feel anything, just heard the sound. But that "plink" sound was enough to crack my engine casing and cause all my oil to leak out. I felt incredibly let down by my motorcycle. After abusing a KLR in Panama for a few years and bottoming out on rocks so hard I thought my spine would crumble the KLR seemed to just shrug everything off. The R1200GS as a extremely vulnerable motor. There is no frame underneath it so the skid plate is mounted directly to the bottom of the engine. Any thing that skid plate hits is transferred directly to the motor. Then if the bike falls over to the left or right the first thing to hit the ground will be the motor. But BMW has somehow convinced the world that this is the best design for an adventure bike.
Here is the route I took through the mountains. It's a pretty cool road if you have a 4x4 or dual sport motorcycle other than a BMW then you should go check it out sometime.

Props to setting up the camera for the external angles, man... even AFTER you had to walk the bike! That, mi amigo, is why I love your videos.

The set up shots are my forte, and they aren't new they are what I have always done. They are something I do that most motorcycle youtubers don't because it's difficult and takes a lot more time. It's my opinion that people watch motorcycle videos because they want to see motorcycles, not because they want to see what I'm seeing on a motorcycle.
The only reason I make the rambling ride a long vids is because they are quick and easy to film and edit. And people seem to like them.

Yes! Finally another genuine halfthrottle video production! It seems like it's been too long. And here you are. You're back into it. Congratulations and thank you.
No! Those effing big GSs are nothing but trouble on any surface less than the I-15. As you know, every dude that has owned one has crashed it, bashed it, and cashed-out while off the beaten path. And now you know all too well. I hope the repair goes well, as well as the sale of it on craigslist. I see another KLR in your future.

Wow, I couldn't disagree more. While I was watching this video I was telling my wife how amazing it is that you take the time to make all the set up shots. I KNOW how much time they take - stop bike, set up camera, back track, ride by, ride back, take down camera. Very energy and time consuming - they are what make your vids so special - well that and your great commentary. Keep up the great work.

This episode of halfthrottle brought to you by Partyland! For all your party needs be sure to choose Partyland!
Tough break on the motor, hope you can get it fixed soon. I have been debating with myself as to whether I should get a KLR or XR next year, or even possibly a DRZ400. Currently riding an SV650 but my friend is on an XR650 and everytime we go for a ride we pass something that looks like it would be a lot of fun if I wasn't riding a stupid streetbike.

Sorry to add another post, but it occurred to me that a short video on the nature of the crack and the reason the skid plate failed would be helpful to everyone in our moto community. That's a pretty high rated plate, but is it possible that the mounting hardware caused the damage? Accidental broadcast's experience with the plate on his Yamaha was interesting. A mounting bolt was shoved up on a rock and punched a hole in the pan. Once again, good luck and best wishes.

    Hello HT.
Also went from a KLR to a BMW. Also had an oil issue. Here is my rebuild:
Not for the faint hearted, and my recommendation would be to find a very good mechanic that knows these bike specifically. Nobody else.
And I would steer clear of BMW for help. My issues noted in my thread.
I am winning, but probably looking at abot $1800 for engineering and and parts. This excludes my labour.
    Good luck

Bad luck man! Hope you get back on the road soon.. Just remember, all things can be viewed in a positive or negative light.. Both ridiculously easy to work on, and fun on the trails! :)

Sometimes, some people might be willing to assume that probably, but not necessarily an individual may prefer a KLR650 over a 1200GS Abrams. But it's not something I would want to state when the dual sport community is watching so I wouldn't assume that obviously.

Ouch! That's always been a fear of mine, that's why I got a skid/bash plate that mounts to the frame and engine mounts on the Tenere. Regarding the engine on your bike, try some liquid cement, or take it to a shop and see if they can weld it.

I'm in the same court, if I could have two, would have a sport bike and a small off-road bike. But I can only have one, so I chose the KLR. I've owned 4 BMW's and they are fine machines, while on the road, but frankly suck off road. I'm surprised that this gravel road caused so much damage, but anything can happen. Take the phone.

The issue about the 800 GS and touratech bash guard. Here is a example in April on a week in Baja one of the riders hit a rock that pushed the Touratech bash guard into his Oil pain, cracking it. Very expensive fix. The 800 also weighs almost as much as the 1200 and the weight is higher up.

If I'm remembering correctly BMW has been trying to retire the boxer style engine for years. However due to it's popularity they choose to use it in order to sell more motorcycles. I think the engineers know it's faults as an engine designed prior to WWII but it's hard to buck tradition.

i destroyed my engine cases three times in just one year. Truth is, they actually failed while engineering the system mounts (with silent-blocks). Anything aimed to protect the cases HAVE TO BE mounted averywhere but there! If U like, i will show you pics with the engine cases split exactly where the skid plate mounts are. U can't Mount any skid plate DIRECTLY to the engine! Like every damn offroad bike the skid plate has to be mounted to a solid point, like the frame or so
